Proposal: Deed Poll

5-2, with one explicit abstention.  Enacted by Excalabur

[ Although Rule 1.2 is now airtight to rule-affecting name changes, it’s still confusing if people can change their names to game terms. I still get occasionally thrown for a moment when reading a post by “Captain”, and I’d rather not have this sort of thing happen every Dynasty. ]

Change the second paragraph of Rule 1.2 (Swashbucklers) from:-

A Swashbuckler may change eir name or eir sidebar link by editing eir blognomic.com profile. A Swashbuckler’s name may only ever act as a signifier identifying a certain player. A name change may never create a meaning in the Ruleset that was not present before it. E may leave the game by posting an entry to the BlogNomic weblog requesting such action.

to:-

A Swashbuckler may leave the game at any time by posting an entry to the BlogNomic weblog requesting such an action. A Swashbuckler may only change their name as a result of a proposal approving the change.

If the Swashbuckler previously known as “Bucky” has a name other than “Bucky”, he can take no game actions except proposing to change his name back to Bucky, and changing his name as a result of such a proposal. This paragraph may be repealed by any Swashbuckler, if a Swashbuckler exists with the name of “Bucky”.

Workable, since nobody would let me change my name to Bucky by proposal.

I don’t mind any of the sentiment except for this line:

A Swashbuckler may only change their name as a result of a proposal approving the change.

I feel that we should be able to change our names without the permission of the other players.

for CoV. On occausion, we have had Dynasties where names matter. This will be good for when such a Dynasty happens.

Legal name changes in the real world are filtered for anything deliberately confusing or scammable; this seems just as important in a game of Nomic - maybe even more important, with the entire game universe revolving around a handful of written laws.

Given that name changes only come up maybe once a year, though, I’d be in favour of using a simpler wording if only to make the core ruleset more readable.

I’m convinced by your arguments, the chat proves good for something. ;)

against as I will probably change my name back soon anyway and the objections to the name change proposals are valid.
