Proposal: History repeals itself

Passes (quorumed) 6 :for: and 3 :against: .Qwazukee has the most votes, so he achieves victory.—Wakukee

Adminned at 28 Jul 2009 09:29:17 UTC

Along with their valid votes to this Proposal, Tourists should include the name of a single Tourist, other than the Tour Guide. The Tourist who has their name included in this fashion on the most votes, achieves victory in the current dynasty. If there is not a single Tourist that meets this criteria, Wilson achieves victory in the current dynasty.

If I win, I’ll go ahead and create Groundhog Dynasty.

Note that the enacting admin will be able to cast any number of successive votes for himself before closing the proposal; the final tally doesn’t count “valid votes”, just “votes”.

But it says “in this fashion”

Kevan: he/him

26-07-2009 20:32:58 UTC

If you vote for yourself fifty times, you’ll have included a vote “in that fashion” fifty times, even if 49 of them aren’t valid votes by the end of play.

(So, in fact, even saying “valid votes” wouldn’t have made any difference. We should really work out a solid phrasing for this kind of thing, and keep it on a shelf in the wiki somewhere.)

Well, I agree with you that we should specify this in the rules. Perhaps a polling rule on the glossary that defines how a poll works?

against I came here specifically to point out the same bug as Kevan has. @Kevan: most proposals in the past have used the phrasing “counted votes”; i.e. if you vote FOR then FOR again, the first isn’t counted because you revoted.

@Kevan, ais

As per the Ruleset’s definition of Vote, “If a Tourist uses more than one Voting Icon in comments on a Pending Proposal, his Vote is the last voting icon he uses.”

So in the scam attempt described only the last comment would be a vote.  Their other comments would not be votes.

Kevan: he/him

27-07-2009 10:29:47 UTC

But each vote was a legal vote at the time it was made; if you interpret “name included in this fashion on the most votes” as meaning “votes cast historically” rather than “votes that are still legal at the end of voting”, it’s scammable.

It’s a bit of a leap, but this is a proposal from the admin who pulled a crazy-language-interpretation DoV scam after enacting a rule illegally, last week.

Responding to Kevan: how about defining the term “Valid Final Vote” as meaning, with respect to a given proposal, the comment (and only the comment) on that proposal that contains the vote by that commenter that is given effect when the proposal is adminned.

Qwazukee:

27-07-2009 19:14:04 UTC

I consider comments with icons that come before the final voting icon to be invalid when the Proposal is enacted/failed, and thus irrelevant in this case. I think this would hold up under CfJ as the most sensible way (avoiding massive spam, if nothing else).

The phrase “The Tourist who has their name included in this fashion on the most votes” pretty clearly only refers to voting icons that are votes when the proposal passes.
