Laws

Ruleset and Gamestate

This is the Ruleset for BlogNomic; all Deities must obey it. Section One consists of the “laws” of blognomic, covering basic Deity and proposal mechanics; Section Two contains the “rules” of the current round, and Section Three contains the glossary, which exists soley to clarify the remainder of the ruleset. Laws and rules may be referred to by their type and number.

The Ruleset and Gamestate can only be changed when the Ruleset specifically permits their being changed.

Spivak pronouns, as defined in the Glossary, shall be used whenever a Deity is referred to.

Admin Staff may correct obvious spelling and typographical mistakes in the Ruleset at any time.

Deities

Anybody may apply to join BlogNomic (if e is not already playing) by registering at http://blognomic.com via the Register link in the sidebar, and then making a post announcing eir arrival. An Admin will add em to the roster in the sidebar, at which moment e becomes a Deity.

A Deity may change eir name or eir sidebar link by editing eir blognomic.com profile. E may leave the game by posting an entry to the BlogNomic weblog requesting such action.

Some Deities are Admin Staff, responsible for updating the site and the Ruleset, and are signified as such in the sidebar. Deities who wish to become Admin should sign up with a username for the Ruleset Wiki, and submit a Proposal to make themselves Admins. Existing Admins may be removed from their post by Proposal, CfJ or voluntary resignation.

Some Deities are Idle, and should be marked as such in the sidebar. For the purposes of rules other than 1 and 2, idle Deities are not counted as Deities. Admin may render a Deity idle if that Deity has failed to vote for more than a week, or if it has asked to become idle. Admins may un-idle an Deity at eir request - the Deity's personal gamestate retains the values it had immediately prior to eir idling.

A single person may not control more than one Deity within BlogNomic. If anybody is suspected of controlling more than one Deity, then a Proposal may be made to remove any number of such Deities from the game, and to bar the perpetrator from rejoining.

Proposals

Any Deity may propose a change to the Ruleset or gamestate by posting an entry in the "Proposal" category that describes the changes e wishes to be made.

Proposals can either be Pending, Enacted, or Failed. When a Proposal is first put forward, it is considered Pending.

No ostensible Proposal shall be legal if its posting leads to its poster having more than 2 Proposals pending. Furthermore, no Deity may post more than 3 Proposals in the same day.

Voting

Any Deity may cast eir Vote on a Pending Proposal by declaring it in the comments of the entry. Valid votes are FOR, AGAINST, and DEFERENTIAL, which must be represented by appropriate icons. If there exists more than one Vote from a single Deity on a single Proposal, only the most recent of those Votes is counted. If a Deity leaves the game or goes idle, eir Vote no longer counts.

A vote of DEFERENTIAL is a vote of no opinion, or of faith in the decision of the Archon. The vote will count as the same as the Archon's vote. The Archon cannot cast a vote of DEFERENTIAL. If there is no Archon, a vote of DEFERENTIAL counts as an explicit vote of abstention.

If the Deity who made a Proposal has not cast an explicit Vote on it, eir Vote is counted as FOR.

Enactment

Quorum is equal to half the number of Deities, rounded down, plus one.

If the oldest pending |Proposal's FOR votes exceed or equal Quorum and that Proposal has been open for voting for at least 12 hours, or if it is more than 48 hours old and more than half of its votes are FOR, then any Admin Staff may mark that Proposal as Enacted, then update the Ruleset and/or Gamestate to include the specified effects of that Proposal.

If the oldest pending Proposal has enough AGAINST votes that it could not be Enacted without one of those votes being changed, or if all Deities have voted on it and it still cannot be Enacted, or if the Deity who proposed it has voted AGAINST it, or if it is more than 48 hours old and at least half of its votes are AGAINST, then any Admin Staff may mark that Proposal as Failed. When the proposer votes against eir own proposal, that vote may not be changed.

whenever an admin marks a proposal as enacted or failed e must report the following information on the proposal:
1) the final tally of for to against votes, or whether the proposal was self-killed or vetoed
2) the time of enactment or failure
3) the identity of the enacting or failing admin

Calls for Judgment

If two or more Deities actively disagree as to the interpretation of the Ruleset, or if a Deity feels that an aspect of the game needs urgent attention, then any Deity may raise a Call for Judgment by posting an entry in the "Call for Judgment" category . If the Deity wishes, e may post anonymously by choosing "Call for Judgment" from the Author drop-down menu on the OPTIONS tab. The post should go on to describe the issue, and measures that should be taken to resolve it.

All Deities may add votes of agreement or disagreement in comments to this entry, using appropriate voting icons (a Deity's later votes overriding eir earlier ones). CfJs continue until they reach a quorum of FOR votes, or until four days have passed. After this time, if more than half of the cast votes are in favour, the Gamestate and Ruleset should be amended as was specified. Otherwise, the CfJ fails and may have no further effect.

Gamestate Tracking

Proposals, Calls for Judgment, and other official posts, as well as specific gamestate information, shall be tracked by the BlogNomic blog at http://blognomic.com. Any Deity may post to the blog at any time, but may only make official posts to the blog when the Ruleset allows it. Posts following the format specified by a rule are considered official posts.

If nobody else has commented on it, an official post may be altered or removed; otherwise this can only be done as allowed by the Ruleset. The Admin processing an official post is allowed to append to the post to reflect its new status. Anything appended to a post in this way must be placed in the Admin field of the post, and the post's Status must changed to reflect its status.

A non-official post may not through editing of the blog be changed into an official post.

Voting and comments are accessible through the link at the bottom of every post.

Specific parts of the Gamestate data shall be tracked by the Generic Nomic Data Tracker at http://blognomic.com/gndt/generic.cgi?nomic=blog. Any Deity may update any Deity's data via the GNDT, whenever the Ruleset permits it.

All updates to the GNDT are logged - if a Deity feels that an alteration goes against the Rules (as they were at the time of the alteration), e may simply undo the effects of that alteration. If such an undoing is disputed, a Call for Judgment should be raised.

Deities shall be assigned a password for the GNDT when they join the Nomic.

Dynasties

BlogNomic is divided into a number of Rounds, referred to as Dynasties.

Each Dynasty has a single Archon and is named according to the number of times which that Deity has been the Archon (or Archon equivalent) (eg. "The First Dynasty of Myke").

The Archon has the following powers:

  • E may veto any Proposal; that Proposal immediately fails. (This veto may be contested with a CfJ if it is thought excessively unreasonable.)
  • E may change the BlogNomic header, the colour scheme and the VETO icon, whenever e likes.

If there is no Archon, any Deity may propose a new header, color scheme, and/or VETO icon. If such a proposal passes, the changes will be made by any Admin.

A page of Dynasty Records is kept on a separate weblog, recording events that took place during past Dynasties, noting their themes, their Archon or equivalent, interesting rules, large arguments, the winning move, etc. A Dynasty record must accurately reflect the Dynasty it refers to. Deities may submit Dynasty Records to the Archon.

Victory and Ascension

If a Deity believes that e has achieved victory as specified in the current Ruleset, e may Make a Post to the Blognomic frontpage entitled "Declaration of Victory", and a Hiatus begins. So long as the Hiatus is in effect, the only game actions that may be taken are those covered by laws 2, 6, and 9.

Every Deity may respond to the Declaration of Victory saying whether e regards it as legal or illegal (using the FOR, AGAINST and DEFERENTIAL icons). If more than half of the Deities consider the win legal, then the poster of the Declaration is considered to have officially won the Dynasty - the Dynasty ends. If more than half consider it illegal, and if no CfJs remain pending, however, then the Hiatus ends and the current Dynasty continues. If no clear decision is reached after 24 hours, the Archon may optionally step in and decide the win's legality.

At the winner's discretion, e may choose another active Deity to be the Archon for the next dynasty. This is known as Passing the Mantle. If the selected Deity agrees, then all rights and responsibilities of the Archon transfer to the selected Deity. If the winner makes no mention of Passing the Mantle, it is assumed that the winner has decided to become the next Archon.

When a Dynasty has been won, all Deities' GNDT stats are reset to zero or blank. Any Deity who were idle throughout that Dynasty may be removed from the game, at the Archon's discretion.

The Hiatus then continues until the new Archon posts an Ascension Address to the BlogNomic weblog - this should specify the Archon's chosen theme for the new round, and may optionally include a proclamation that any number of Rules will be repealed, and/or that the words "Deity" and "Archon" will be replaced with new theme-appropriate terms. If the new Archon chooses not to repeal a rule, e may also replace any keyword in those rules with a new theme-appropriate term. The remaining rules, after the new Archon's proclamation, shall be renumbered to keep a sequential progression. The new Archon may also proclaim at the Ascension Address the veto of any Pending Proposals.

Upon posting this Address, and having made the Ruleset changes, the Hiatus period ends and the new Dynasty commences.

The Archon may not declare victory in eir own dynasty.

Rules

The Other

There is an Deity who is called the Other. The Other has the same powers as the Archon, except that the Ohter uses a distinct Veto icon, which is called the Other's Seal (the icon may be added here by the Other). Each seal icon may only be changed by its wielder.

The Archon and the Other may overturn a veto imposed by the other. This may only be done if all Proposals subsequent to the one vetoed are still pending. The vetoed Proposal then reverts to pending status. Once a veto has been overturned on a Proposal, that Proposal may not be vetoed again.

The Dynasty is still considered to belong to the Archon alone, but if the Other is able to achieve victory in that Dynasty, then its title is changed in the Dynastic records to bear the name of the Other instead.

Excalabur is the Other.

A Diety may, in addition to a Deferential vote, add the Other’s seal to eir vote. This causes the Deferntial vote to be counted identically to the Other’s vote, instead of the Archon’s. It otherwise behaves identially to a standard Deferential vote.

Quintessence

Each Deity may often increase eir own Quintessence by one point for every 10 Temples with Auras that eir Incarnation has (A Temple with an aura has an "!" after the Incarnation name in the City Wiki).

New Deities start with 5 Quintessence.

Domain

A Deity can use an Incarnation to draw quintessence from patterns of the cosmos.

Every Incarnation has a Domain listed in the Deity Wiki. This Domain is a description of a element (be it an event, object, or abstract concept) within an Epic for which the Deity gains Quintessence. Occasionally, a Deity may change the Domain of eir current Incarnation. The Archon or Other may overturn such a change if done within 24 hours.

Epics

Often a Deity may make a post with the title “Epic: ((Epic Title))”. This post should contain a narrative detailing the exploits of a hero or other significant events within the mortal world.

In response to an Epic post all Deities may Exercise Domain on it, by posting any number of comments claiming elements of the Epic which fall within the Domain of eir current Incarnation. After 24 hours the Epic becomes closed and those Deities who Exercised Domain have 24 hours in which ey may gain Quintessence. By default a Deity gains 3 Quintessence per Epic, but this amount is adjusted if any of the same elements of that Epic were claimed by another Deity: if claims were made by an Incarnation with a more general Domain add 1 Quintessence; if claims were made by an Incarnation with a more specific Domain subtract 2 Quintessence; if the relationship of the Domains is unclear, then subtract 1 Quintessence. The final amount of Quintessence awarded may be zero, but not negative. The Other and Archon are the arbiters of whether the Exercise of a Domain was legal, and may not gainsay one another’s decision.

For Example: Gilgamesh gets really drunk and, mistaking a passing crocodile for a drowning maiden, plunges into the river to save her. Deities A, B, and C exercise the domains of ‘animals’, ‘reptiles’, and ‘crocodiles’ on the crocodile. C gains 5 Quintessence, B gains 2 Quintessence and A does not gain any Quintessence. Deities D and E exercise the domains ‘bravery’ and ‘compassion’ on drunken Gilgamesh. Both Deities gain 2 Quintessence.

The Archon or Other may nullify an entire Epic by indicating this using eir veto icon. The Epic then has no effect and all comments to it have no effect, and the poster loses the ability to make another Epic for 24 hours.

Incarnation

Each Deity may often change the “Incarnation” and “Pantheon” entry simultaneously by setting eir Quintessence to zero. The first time e does so, i.e. just after e joins game, a Deity may change eir Incarnation and Pantheon without setting eir Quintessence to zero. When a Deity elects to make such a change, e shall set the "Incarnation" field to the name of any historical, fictional, or imaginary deity and shall set the "Pantheon" field to the name of the pantheon to which that deity belongs.

This action shall be referred to as "changing roles".

The Archon may change roles without setting eir Quintessence to zero.

If a Deity changes roles to an Incarnation which is not listed in the Deity Wiki, then the name and pantheon of that Incarnation shall be added to the Deity Wiki.

No Deity may change roles to become an Incarnation which is currently listed in the “Incarnation” field in the GNDT for some other active Deity.

No Deity may switch eir Incarnation more than often.

Godhead

Since the Archon is asborbed with the metaphysical necessities of being and chaos, e is seldom present in the realm of the gods to rule over the planes of existence. The Archon’s seat as the divine principal is empty--any Deity may occupy it.

Only one Deity may be the Godhead at any time. To become the Godhead, a Deity must {make a Post} to the main page, stating why e is allowed to do so. Once a Deity has done so, no other such post may be made within the same day, even if the conditions allowing Godhead-hood change.

Glory

At any time, the Deity with the most Temples is allowed to become the Godhead.

Cities

Each City of the world has a Name, Founder, Dominant Pantheon and optional Description, tracked in the Cities Wiki.

Conversion

At any time, if there is at least one Temple belonging to a Deitiy in that Pantheon in a given City, that Pantheon has a number of Worshippers in that City, added together from the following types::

  • 50 Settler Worshippers if the Founder Deity is of that Pantheon.
  • 100 Resident Worshippers for every Temple of that Pantheon in that City.

If a Pantheon has more Worshippers in a City than any other Pantheon, any Deity may change the Dominant Pantheon of that City to become that Pantheon by posting a notice to the front page to that effect.

Temples

Each City may house any number of Temples to the Gods; these are tracked in the City Wiki. If a Deity changes its Incarnation, Temples dedicated to its previous Incarnation remain.

If the number of Resident Worshippers yielded by a Temple is permanently reduced to 0 or less, that Temple is destroyed.

Eternal Rules

A rule may transcend the ability of even the gods to change. Such a rule must labelled an Eternal rule in the ruleset.

An Eternal rule may not be repealed or amended by proposal during this dynasty. If an Eternal rule is altered by other means, as part of that alteration every variable in the gamestate over which that Eternal rule has some control is reset to its default starting value, or cleared if it has no starting value defined.

If a Proposal affects a part of the gamestate or ruleset which is also governed by an Eternal rule that Proposal fails unless it gets unanimous FOR votes.

Powers

Each Incarnation may have any number of Powers, each Power being a combination of a number of power-drawing Worship components and universe-changing Might components. (Worship and Might are divided into two types, reflecting their scope - "Global" and "City".)

An Incarnation's Powers should be listed in the Deity Wiki, and should list the components they were made from.

Incarnations start with no Powers, but at certain times Deities may create or remove a Power of eir current Incarnation. If an Incarnation has fewer than 6 Powers, its controlling Deity may create a Power for it by spending 1 Quintessence. Powers with at least 1 “Might” component that mentions an Avatar are not counted against this limit. Immediately after switching Incarnations, a Deity may add and/or remove a Power of the Incarnation ey have switched to for free, but this may only be done once per switch. The new Power is named by its creator and must be made from a combination of the components listed below.

Each component has a Worship or a Might cost - a Power being constructed or modified must have at least as much Worship as Might. If a Power uses any Global Might, it must also have at least as much Global Worship.

If a Power has a Component which gives a variable amount of Worship or Might, the balance condition between those amounts (Worship >= Might and Global Worship >= Global Might) must be true when the power is being used, instead of when it is being constructed.

A Power may only contain one instance of each component.

Components may list one or more descriptive Keywords. A Keyword describes specific characteristics of a Component. A Power may not have components that share Keywords to each other.

Deities may use the Powers of eir Incarnation at any time - however, a single Power may never be used on a particular Deity or Incarnation more than often. This includes creating, destroying or modifying Temples to that Incarnation, or Avatars of that Incarnation, or Cities founded by that Incarnation. In addition, the same Power may not be used to affect targets in the same City more than often.

No Power may be created or modified that would result in a Deity having 2 or more Powers with exactly the same components. No Power may be created or modified that would result in 2 or more Powers, held by any Deities, having exactly the same components if one of them is the Universal component.

No Power may be created or modified that would result in an Incarnation having the same component in more than 5 of eir Powers.

No Power may be created or modified that would result in an Incarnation having more than 12 Powers.

Prophecy

Existence passes through great cycles of being. Deities may usher in these cycles by declaring a Prophecy, which is tracked in the GNDT. A Deity may change eir Prophecy occasionally to a word or short phrase of eir choosing, or to nothing at all.

Ages

The current Age is determined by the Prophecy held by the most Deities, and is named after it (such as "Age of Cataclysm", "Dark Ages" or omitting the 'Age' entirely, such as "The Beginning") and is tracked in the Deity Wiki. Minor differences in spelling, plural/singular, articles and conjuctions are ignored for the purposes of considering Prophecies to be the same. In the case of a tie for most popular Prophecy, the current Age continues. In the case where the most popular Prophecy is a null entry, the Age is simply called "Ageless". When the Age changes, the Deity who brought it about must Make a Post alerting the divine community of the new Age.

When the current Age is switched to an Age on this list, the corresponding global rule changes are applied, either as a one-time or continuous effect. These rule changes supersede all other rules and laws.

Age List

  • Prosperity - While in this Age, Cities may be created at no cost of Quintessence by any Deity.
  • Apocalypse - When switching to this Age, all Cities and Temples are destroyed.
  • Persecution - During this Age, Incarnations which are the only representative of a single Pantheon in the Deity wiki are destroyed. All Temples to those Incarnations are also destroyed.
  • Oblivion - When switching to this Age, all Incarnations without any Temples are destroyed.
  • Stability - When switching to this Age, the Prophecy of all Deities is set to “Stability”, as if that Deity had chosen to make the change emselves (and allowing such a switch which would otherwise be illegal because of being changed more than occasionally).
  • Shadow - During this Age the Archon loses any privileges and distinctions and is treated as any other Deity.
  • Illumination - During this Age the Other loses any privileges and distinctions and is treated as any other Deity.
  • Innocence - During this Age, Deities may post one additional proposal over the normal limit of pending proposals.
  • Decline - Deities may not gain Quintessence. A Power which causes Quintessence gain can be used, but that effect does not happen.
  • Peace - During this Age, Temples may not be destroyed. A Power which would destroy a Temple can be used, but that effect does not happen.
  • Reason - During this Age, Powers may not be used.
  • ((Incarnation Name)) - During this Age, the Deity using the named Incarnation is the Godhead.
  • Legends: During this Age, deities may post twice as many Epics as normal.
  • Greyness: During this Age, deities may not post Epics.
  • End of Days - During this Age, a Prophecy set to ‘End of Days’ may not be changed. During this Age, if a Deity meets any two of the following conditions, and e was not the most recent Deity to have changed eir Prophecy, e may declare victory:
    • E has an Avatar with the most Life Points of all Avatars.
    • E is Godhead.
    • E has the highest Quintessence of all Deities.
    • Eir Pantheon is the Dominant Pantheon of the most Cities.
    • E set eir Prophecy to ‘End of Days’ in the previous Age.

Prophecies listed in double brackets may match a range of values of the type indicated, but if this would conflict with a specifically defined Age, the specific value is used instead. (for example, an Incarnation named "Oblivion" would not get the Godhead from the "Age of Oblivion").

Avatars

Incarnations may have Avatars. An Avatar is the physical presence of an Incarnation in the world. An Avatar has an integer number of Life Points that must be always positive. If the number of Life Points of an Avatar would be reduced to Zero or less, that Avatar shall be destroyed instead.

At any moment, an Incarnation must have only one Avatar. If any game action or effect would result in any Incarnation having more than one Avatar, that action or effect shall be void and null.

An Avatar may only be present in Cities where its Incarnation has Temples at. At Any moment, if an Avatar is in a City where its Incarnation has no Temples at, that Avatar shall be destroyed.

A City where an Avatar is in may never be destroyed.

The Presence of an Avatar shall be represented in the Cities Wiki, besides the Temples listing for that City, by the notation "Avatar: ((Incarnation Name/LP))", where LP is the number of Life Points remaining in that Avatar.

If a rule allows an Avatar to take an action, that action may be taken by the Deity controlling that Avatar’s Incarnation.

If an Incarnation’s Avatar is destroyed, the following effects immediately ensue:

  • Destroy all Temples, if any, to that Avatar’s Incarnation that are in the same City where the Avatar was in just before being destroyed.
  • Set the Quintessence of the Deity controlling that Avatar’s Incarnation to Zero.
  • The Deity controlling that Avatar’s Incarnation may not take any action allowed by a Rule for the next 24 hours. They can still take any action allowed by a Law.

Glossary

This is always at the end of the Ruleset. Its only effect can be to clarify ambiguity.

  • It is noted that where a Proposal would amend the effects of Proposal Enactment, this does not apply to its own enactment unless explicitly stated (eg. a proposal proposing that enacted proposals earn their writer a banana when enacted would not earn a banana for its own writer, when enacted).
  • Rules which trigger on Enactment or Failure of a Proposal are the responsibility of the acting Admin, who is responsible to check if Quorum is met at the moment of the Enactment.
  • Appropriate Icons: For use in voting, a check box http://blognomic.com/images/vote/for.gif shall represent a vote FOR, an X http://blognomic.com/images/vote/against.gif shall represent a vote AGAINST, an I http://blognomic.com/images/vote/imperial.gif shall represent a vote of DEFERENTIAL, and an Imperial Seal (currently http://blognomic.com/images/vote/seal.gif) shall represent the Imperial Veto.
  • The "subject" of a blog entry is the first and only sentence in the Title of an entry. Any entry that does not have exactly one subject is not valid.
  • "Posts" and "comments" refer only to those made to the BlogNomic weblog at blognomic.com
  • A keyword defined by a rule supersedes the normal English usage of the word. A keyword defined in this glossary supersedes that defined by a rule. (eg. A rule specifying "Bananas are Blue" cannot be overruled by posting a dictionary definition or a photo of a banana, and a rule specifying "every day is Sunday" will be overruled by the glossary entry below.)
  • Unless otherwise specified, game variables defined to hold numeric values can hold only non-negative integers, and any action that would set those values below zero instead sets them to zero. Any situation which would require a roll of DiceX when X is zero or lower always yields a value of 0 unless stated otherwise.
  • Superficial differences between the spelling of geographic versions of English, e.g, British English, American English, Australian English shall be construed as irrelevant for the purposes of play.
  • Gamestate is defined as any information which the Ruleset regulates the alteration of, such as Countries' names and the blog colour scheme.

Typographic Conventions

  • Italicized text is not considered part of the ruleset and may be used to clarify rules with examples, notes and flavor text.

Timespans

  • References to "a day" (as an entity rather than a duration, eg. "Sunday") refer to that day in the timezone of the BlogNomic blog, which is considered to be GMT for all purposes.
  • References to a "week" refer to the period of time between the start of a Monday and the end of the following Sunday.
  • All references to time must be either specific or defined within the ruleset to be considered achievable in the gamestate. Abstract concepts of time (e.g. "dinnertime", "twilight") cannot be achieved until they fulfil one of these criteria.
  • An action which may be taken 'often' may be taken once per day, but not more than once every six hours.
  • An action which may be taken 'occasionally' may be taken once per week, but not more than once per twenty-four hours.
