Proposal: Ruleset Amendments

Passes 11-0.—75th Trombone

Adminned at 04 Mar 2006 19:34:49 UTC

Being a new player, I’m looking at the Ruleset quite a lot (taking into account that most of it went on in the last Dynasty and won’t be applicable), and I’ve found myself glancing at the Glossary quite a bit. Some of the terms were defined elsewhere, though, and not in the Glossary, where they probably should be. Therefore I propose the following:

  1. That the first paragraph of section 1.5, which currently reads:
Quorum is equal to half the number of Swashbucklers, rounded down, plus one.
is moved to the Glossary, section 3.
  2. That new glossary items are proposed for the terms Dynasties, Hiatus and Metadynasty. As a new player, I am having a lot of trouble working out what the difference between a Hiatus and a Metadynasty is, and when a Dynasty actually starts and ends. This is excaberated by what appear to be inconsistencies in the ruleset, and the posts themselves - for example, these two quotes, both in section 1.9, appear on first glance to overlap:
Hiatus may not end if either of the following stipulations are false and ends once they are both true:   * There is no active DoV.   * There are no pending CFJs.
    and:
The Hiatus then continues until the new Captain posts an Ascension Address to the BlogNomic weblog…
while a recent CfJ says that if it passes, action should be taken to:
    * End the Hiatus, and the game will enter into a Metadynastic Period.
  3. That if I am deemed to be lawyering too much about the rules, I shall bonk myself on the head.

Effectively, this only moves the definition of quorum around.

In that some of our terms are vague, you are correct—last Dynasty showed that we have a number of concepts which need to be better defined.

A Dynasty is normally a unit of time, being the time between two successful declarations of victory.  Each dynasty has a single Emperor or equivalent.

A Hiatus is a pause in normal play after a Declaration of Victory while everything sorts itsself out.

A Metadynasty is an abnormal period of play in which the previous Emperor has been removed but a new one has not yet been installed.

I mean, quorum.

I’m thinking more like this.

A Dynasty starts at the Ascension Address and ends after a Declaration of Victory has passed.

A Metadynasty is a Dynasty without a Ché-Háme-Háme. It starts when either the Ché-Háme-Háme leaves the game or the Metadynasty is started through CfJ or proposal.

A Hiatus is the period of time starting when a DoV is posted, and ending when either all DoV’s are failed, or when one DoV is passed, at which point any existing DoV’s are failed.
