Proposal: To See What He Could See, See, See

Reached quorum 8 votes to 1. Enacted by Kevan.

Add a new rule, “Exploring”:-

A Hunter may Explore their current Location by posting a blog entry to this effect. The Pirate may react to such an exploration by Describing the Island, if they have not done so already for that exploration action: upon doing so, they reduce the Hunter’s Pieces by 1 (this reduction may cause that number to become negative) and privately message the Hunter a list of all the Landmarks on the explored Island.

against

I think there are some good ideas here. But a blog post for each exploration will spam the blog, and the Pirate is going to wind up having to Describe the Island several times which will get repetitive. I also don’t like how the Pirate can choose to ignore a hunter’s exploration attempts (but still accept other Hunters)

Not sure about spam. With a cost of 1 Piece to Exploring, I’d expect information to be traded more than generated, and would be surprised to see more than one Exploration per player per week.

BUT, we have yet to give the hunters a starting position!

Ah, true, it was careless of me not to throw in an “if proposal X passed” clause, but http://blognomic.com/archive/a_three_hour_tour is further back in the queue, and is almost at quorum.

You know, I’m really not sure about this one. I don’t think the spam issue is major, and I, at least, trust me not to ever turn down an Exploration post,

But I’m not sure if Exploring should cost a Piece? And I’m not sure if this should be the first real thing to do.

Possibly there should be multiple exploration methods? There are ways to differentiate; public vs. private, reveals one Landmark or all Landmarks, is a Piece expenditure or has a chance to find Pieces, et cetera.

Abstaining for now, but I will vote if there’s still a large number of DEFs, when I have my mind more made up.

trading information is unverifiable. Its also hard to say how players will spend their gold

The Piece cost was to stop it from being a no-brainer action there was never any reason not to take, which would spam the blog. Other ways to uncover the same data would be good.

Traded information is verifiable in the sense that anyone can sail to an Island to check whether the Hunter who passed on its description was lying, and react accordingly.
