Proposal: I don’t dig your style

Summarily Vetoed -Bucky

Adminned at 01 Feb 2012 19:52:20 UTC

Create a new dynastic rule named “Boos”, and give it the text:

Every Musician has an amount of Boos, a nonnegative integer tracked in the GNDT that defaults to 0.

Each Musician has a list of names tracked in a GNDT column named “Targets.”

A Musician may Boo another Musician if they have not cast a vote in the last 72 hours. When a Musician Boos another Musician, they add that Musician’s name to their Targets, and increase the targeted Musician’s Boos by 1.

Remove all irrelevant information from the GNDT, and create a new column named “Boos”.

Create a new dynastic rule named “Awkwardness”, and give it the text:

Awkwardness is a nonnegative integer, tracked in the GNDT in the Frontman’s Boos field. Whenever a Musician joins Blognomic, or unidles for the first time in the dynasty, the Awkwardness is increased by 1.

When a Musician has a number of Boos greater than or equal to the Awkwardness, the Frontman may Kick them out of the Band and reveal their Style. Everytime a Musician is Kicked out of the Band, the Awkwardness drops by 1.

A Musician who has been Kicked out of the Band does not count as a Musician for the purpose of any other Dynastic Rule, except for the rule “Lollapalooza”

Set the Awkwardness to 12.

Create a new Dynastic Rule, named “Lollapalooza”, and give it the text:

When all Musicians still in the Band are of the same style, that style becomes the Band’s Style. Every Muscian of the Band’s Style then loses one Coolness for each name in their Targets of a Musician of the Band’s Style, and gains one Coolness for each name in their Targets of a Musician of the opposing style. The Musician with the most Coolness then wins the game.

My system for allowing Musicians to attack the people they think are of the opposing style.

Proposal: Look Dad No Tunes

Reached quorum 8 votes to 2. Enacted by Kevan. Clucky, Spitemaster and Darknight become Band Members; so does Cpt_Koen, but since it’s illegal for him to be a Band Member, nothing happens.

Adminned at 01 Feb 2012 03:33:27 UTC

Enact a new rule, “In the Band”:-

Musicians may be Band Members or Hangers On. This is tracked as a “Band” field in the GNDT, noted as “Yes” if the Musician is a Band Member and “No” or “-” if they are a Hanger On. All Musicians start as Hangers On.

Enact a new rule, “Respect and Grievance”:-

Each Musician may Respect one Musician (or Idle Musician) and have a Grievance against one Musician (or Idle Musician). These are tracked as the name of a Musician, or the name of an Idle Musician, in the “Respect” and “Grievance” fields of the GNDT respectively. A Musician may not Respect themselves, nor have a Grievance against themselves.

If all Band Members Respect the same Hanger On and no Band Members have a Grievance against that Hanger On, then that Hanger On becomes a Band Member.

If all but one of the Band Members have a Grievance against the same Band Member, and no Band Members Respect that Band Member, then that Band Member becomes a Hanger On.

Upon enactment of this proposal, four different Musicians shall be selected at random from those who commented on the proposal, using GNDT die rolls. Each of those four Musicians shall become Band Members; all other Musicians shall be Hangers On.

Given that Ltn_Koen has used both slots, here’s a mechanical retake on the idea of voting people in and out of the band.

One, Two

Looks like the ruleset still requires me to make an “idling post” and to ask myself to unidle myself, if I want to unidle myself. I would like to be unidled. Hello.

Proposal: You know my style is naughty

Self-killed. Failed by Kevan.

Adminned at 01 Feb 2012 02:32:22 UTC

Create a new dynastic rule named “Debate”, and give it the text:

Every Musician has an amount of Votes against them, a nonnegative integer tracked in the GNDT that defaults to 0. Use of the word “vote” in any dynastic rule is a reference to this rule and not to rule 1.5 “Votable Matters”.

A Musician may cast a vote against another Musician, effectively increasing by 1 the number of Votes against that other Musician, by making a post announcing the vote and updating the relevant GNDT stat, if they have not cast a vote in the last 96 hours.

Remove all irrelevant information from the GNDT, and create a new column named “Votes”.
Create a new dynastic rule named “An unpleasant feeling”, and give it the text:

There is a number, called Awkwardness, a nonnegative integer tracked in the GNDT in the Frontman’s Votes field. At the start of the dynasty the Awkwardness is 12. Whenever a Musician joins Blognomic, or unidles for the first time in the dynasty, the Awkwardness is increased by 1.

When a Musician has a number of Votes greater than or equal to the Awkwardness, the Frontman may Kick them out of the Band and reveal their music style.
Everytime a Musician is Kicked out of the Band, the Awkwardness drops by 1.
A Musician who has been Kicked out of the Band does not count as a Musician for the purpose of any other Dynastic Rule.

Please remember, the goal is to force your style on the band, not to be the last Musician.

Thanks to southpointingchariot for reviews on this.
And for the flavour.
And for the mechanics.

Proposal: But I’m back with a brand new style

Reached quorum 7 votes to 0. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 01 Feb 2012 02:32:09 UTC

Create a new dynastic rule named “A note of discord”, and give it the text:

At the creation of this rule, every active Musician, and after that, each Musician that joins or unidles for the first time in this dynasty, will be randomly assigned a style, either Rock or Techno, which will be secretly recorded by the Frontman. Each Musician will then be notified of their style via private message by the Frontman, along with the name of another Musician who has the same style as them.

In a totally unrelated matter, change the name of the author of this proposal from “Ltn_Koen” to “Cpt_Koen”. He earned his promotion when he achieved victory, after all.
While you’re at it, change rule 2.1 name from “Central Office” to “Koen’s Band”.

I’m not dispatching taxicabs.

Ascension Address: I’ve been gone for a while

Snow’s melt,
Trees grow green,

Spring has come

It is more than time to rehearse for Lollapalooza 2012, which will take place at the start of August!
As your band leader and song writer, I am about to compose pieces for you to rehearse.
Just tell me if you want me to write Rock or Techno. I can do both.

Throughout the Ruleset, replace the word “Criminal” with “Musician” and “Don” with “Frontman”.
Rule 2.1 “Central Office” is to be kept; repeal all other dynastic rules.

Use of the word “fairy” is no longer prohibited. Enjoy.

Declaration of Victory: Has there been any accidental win in the past?

Open for 12 hours, Quorum of FOR votes. Dom has voted FOR it and no AGAINST votes so this passes.—Clucky

Adminned at 29 Jan 2012 13:41:20 UTC

Clucky pointed out I couldn’t transfer Wealth to southpointingchariot since he was no longer a former partner of mine.
Damn, going to jail sucks. That mustache I had was so much better!
As Clucky said, I could’ve transfered the Wealth to him or omd and southpointingchariot would still have won; but I didn’t do that.
I believe the transfer was illegal, but the aggravating was legal anyway, and instantly had me win, though not on purpose.

So here’s your hiatus.

North is opposite of Victory

Hello fellow mobsters,
Hello worshiped Don,

Quite a lot have happened to me recently!
I robbed more banks than you guys could ever dreamed of;
I own the world’s biggest collection of stolen art;
I smuggled armaments under everyone’s nose, making me Public Enemy Number 1!

The police did caught me, though. I suspect I might have been snitched by those two guys…
But that’s OK, I broke out of prison! Used all firepower to blow an entire wall and steal a police car.

So here am I, the most wanted criminal - my heat almost hit 2 digits!
So I decided to show the police who was the boss.
You know that big event our Don was talking about?
It costed me no less than 40,000 Respect, 40,000 Firepower and 40,000 Wealth, but I did it! The police will not forget my name, I guarantee you.
(OK, it did cost a little less. 39,999 to be precise. But who counts?)

The police was so upset! Now they are more sharp and watchful than ever.
In fact, their Vigilance Number is up to 200 now, which is about as high as it could go.

However, before everyone bows before me, there is one last thing I need to say.
I am NOT the new Don in town.
Considering that I only got where I got with the help of about all those who didn’t care about winning;
Considering that I owed Southpointingchariot A LOT of ressources, according to our agreements when he watched out for me in the past, during those dark days where the police was chasing me from bank to bank;
Considering that Southpointingchariot is the only one who actually tried to play ais523’s dynasty, bargaining before any assisted action, making good-for-the-dynasty proposals and all that…

Well, let’s just say I think we are even now ;-)
You can check the GNDT and wait for his Declaration of Victory, for our New Don in Town is, with a Leadership of 1725…

Call for Judgment: Where are the Story Posts?

Timed out 5 votes to 3. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 01 Feb 2012 02:46:52 UTC

The definition of Official Post:

Posts following the format specified by a rule are considered official posts.

and of Story Post:

A Story Post is an Official Post that is not a member of any specific category of Official Posts mentioned or defined in a Core Rule (excluding Official Post).

Thus a Story Post is a post in a category of Official Post defined by a dynastic rule.  I don’t know why it’s defined as it is, but I don’t think the definition makes any sense - at least, it doesn’t correspond to the “Story Post” category at all.  Also, since there aren’t currently any such categories, it’s impossible to create a Story Post as required by Unamed Rule (which is typoed, btw), which requires urgent attention ‘nd all that.

Therefore, update the Ruleset by replacing the definition of Story Post with:

A Story Post is an entry in the “Story Post” category.

Proposal: Plea Bargain

Timed out and passed, 4-0. Josh

Adminned at 28 Jan 2012 00:49:07 UTC

Create a new rule, entitled “Plea Bargain”, reading:

As an assisted action, a Criminal with at least 3 Criminals in their former partner’s list may Plea Bargain. When a player Plea Bargains, first, they lose (X - 1)/X of their Wealth, Respect, and Firepower, where X is number of names in their former partner’s list, and then their Former Partner’s list becomes the null set.

Proposal: Contacts

Timed out and passed, 6-1. Josh

Adminned at 28 Jan 2012 00:48:13 UTC

Append to the rule “Working Together” the text:

At any time, a Criminal may pay 100 wealth, and then transfer any positive amount of their Wealth or Firepower to a Criminal in their Former Partners list.

Allows for players to transfer wealth and firepower.

Proposal: Hot bribes

Timed out and enacted without the EVC rider, 5-1. Josh

Adminned at 28 Jan 2012 00:46:15 UTC

Amend rule 2.4 “Heat” by adding the following text as a second paragraph:

Whenever a Criminal performs an Assisted Action defined in rule 2.3 “Swag”, they must pay M times 100 Wealth, where M is the maximum of the Culprit and the Lookout’s Heats.

If half the number of Effective Vote Comments on this Proposal, rounded down, plus one include the text “KOEN MUST PAY AS WELL”, in all caps, then decrease Ltn Koen’s Wealth by 1,600.

If rule 2.8 “The New Don in Town” contains the text “A Criminal’s Leadership is equal to whichever value is highest out of their Wealth, Firepower, and Respect”, replace it with:

A Criminal’s Leadership is equal to whichever value is lowest out of their Wealth, Firepower, and Respect

Heat was supposed to be a bad thing, yet so far it hasn’t really mattered at all.
In case you think that’s dishonest of me to have other people pay when I did all of that for free, I think I should have paid 100+300+300+400+500 or something, hence the quorum of evc stuff.

The New Don in Town’s amendment have people need to raise all three of their ressources in order to win.

Proposal: The Police

Timed out and failed, 4-1.Josh

Adminned at 28 Jan 2012 00:45:20 UTC

Create a Rule titled “The Police”:

Some Criminals are Agents secretly working for the police.  The Don shall privately track, and keep all Agents informed of, which Criminals are Agents.  Any Criminal who has never been an Agent can become one by privately informing the Don.

An Agent cannot be the Culprit of an Assisted Action if the Lookout is another Agent.

As an Assisted Action, a non-Agent Criminal can spend 2000 Respect to Accuse a specified Criminal.  When this happens, the Don shall publicly disclose whether the Accused Criminal was an Agent.  Then, if so, all of that Agent’s Respect, Firepower, Wealth, and Goods is transferred to the Culprit, the Agent’s Heat is set to zero, the Agent becomes not In Jail, the Police Vigilance Number is increased by the Agent’s former Heat, and the Agent ceases to be an Agent.

The Police Budget is a non-negative integer tracked in the Don’s Respect field in the GNDT, defaulting to zero.  When the Police Vigilance Number is increased, the Police Budget is increased by the same amount.

The Police Inefficiency is PVN/10 + 5, where PVN is the Police Vigilance Number, rounded down.

A Police Action is a type of action that any Agent may request the Don perform on behalf of the Police, specifying any required parameters for the action.  As soon as possible after receiving such a request, the Don shall attempt to reduce the Police Budget by the Police Inefficiency.  If the Police Budget is less than the Police Inefficiency, nothing happens.  Otherwise, the Don shall record in the GNDT which action was requested, but not the parameters; then, as soon as possible after the specified delay, the Don shall carry out the action.

As a Police Action with a delay of 48 hours, the Police may Raid a Criminal for a specified Good.  If that Criminal possesses that Good, it is removed from their possession and their Respect is decreased by the Good’s Reputation.

As a Police Action with a delay of 24 hours, the Police may Perform a Sting for a specified Assisted Action listed in the rule “Swag”.  All Criminals who performed that action in the last 24 hours go to Jail, and lose half of any Wealth, Respect, or Firepower they gained as a result of that action during that time, to a minimum of 0 each.

Amend the rule “Goods” by inserting this paragraph before “The following goods can be Stolen”:

A Criminal may give a Good they possess to another Criminal, lowering their own Respect by half the Good’s Reputation and increasing the recipient’s Respect by the same amount.

No comments on the proto, so here’s a real proposal.  (I’ve fixed some of the wording and flipped the restriction on Agents performing Assisted Actions.)

“The theme reminded me of Mafia, so here’s a bit of Mafia in reverse.  The advantage to becoming an Agent: you get to direct the Police, which won’t benefit you directly, but can harm your competition.  The disadvantage: your ability to commit crime is limited, and if someone deduces what’s going on from either that limitation or the Police’s actions, you’re screwed for a while.”

Proposal: Should do this anyway

Timed out and passed, 5-1 with 1 unresolved DEF. Josh

Adminned at 28 Jan 2012 00:44:21 UTC

Amend the third bullet in the rule “Numbers and Variables” to read:

Unless otherwise specified, to “spend” or “lose” an amount X of a numeric value “V” means to subtract X from V; to “gain” X of a numeric value “V” means to add X to V; and to “transfer” X of a numeric value “V” from A to B means to subtract X from A’s V and add X to B’s V.  Unless otherwise specified, only positive amounts can be spent, lost, gained, or transferred, and a rule that allows Criminals to transfer a numeric value only allows them to transfer that value from themselves to another Criminal (of their choice unless otherwise stated).

This adds a definition for “lose” alongside “spend” and “gain”, and the positivity restriction.  Modified the wording a bit from my CfJ to add “unless otherwise specified” to the latter, as requested by Clucky.

Proposal: Poking the Bear

Timed out and enacted, 4-1 with 1 resolved DEF. Josh

Adminned at 27 Jan 2012 12:12:14 UTC

Add the following to the end of the dynastic rule “Heat”

As an Assisted Action, if the current Police Vigilance number is Z, a Criminal can spend Y^2 - Z^2 Firepower, Y^2 - Z^2 Wealth, and Y^2 - Z^2 Respect to increase the Police Vigilance Number to Y (Y must be greater than Z). This action may be refered to as “Aggravating the Police”

Essentially, this lets you pay 2Z - 1 of each attribute to increase the PVN, but lets you do it multiple times per assisted action.

Turns the dynasty into a game of chicken - you spend your resources to get the PVN up closer to 200 but if you spend everything you won’t have the max somewhere.

Probably enough people working together will be able to end the dynasty pretty quickly after this, but its better than the time bomb hitting.

Create a new dynastic rule:

There is a time bomb with a timer, an integer that shall be tracked in a Story Post.  When a day ends during which the game was never in Hiatus, if at least one proposal has been created that day, the timer is increased by 2; otherwise, it is decreased by 1.  When the timer is less than or equal to zero, all dynastic rules are repealed and a new metadynasty starts.

Set the timer of the time bomb to 4.

Call for Judgment: Try 3

Timed out. Fails 1-3—Clucky

Adminned at 24 Jan 2012 00:43:40 UTC

Amend the third bullet in the rule “Numbers and Variables” to read:

Unless otherwise specified, to “spend” or “lose” an amount X of a numeric value “V” means to subtract X from V (i.e. replace V with V-X); to “gain” X of a numeric value “V” means to add X to V; and to “transfer” X of a numeric value “V” from A to B means to subtract X from A’s V and add the amount A’s V was reduced by to B’s V. Only positive amounts can be spent, lost, gained, or transferred. Unless otherwise specified, a rule that allows Criminals to transfer a numeric value only allows them to transfer that value from themselves to another Criminal (of their choice unless otherwise stated).

Correct the GNDT, and change the gamestate if necessary, to correspond to this interpretation.  In particular, Clucky’s recent attempts to lose -1 Wealth are considered to have failed, so at the time this CfJ was raised, they had 7000 Firepower and 0 Wealth (because they attempted to convert all their Wealth to Firepower).

Call for Judgment: Because apparently everyone else is either too lazy or doesn’t understand concept “lose”

Timed out. Passes 4-2. Enacted by Clucky

Adminned at 23 Jan 2012 18:56:04 UTC

Add the following to the list of clarifications in “Numbers and Variables”

Invalid values for game variables can never be used, even if the values stored in the GNDT remain valid. (for example, if X appears in a formula referring to a value that is a non-negative integer, X must be used as a non-negative integer)

Set Clucky’s Wealth to 500, his Firepower to 10500, and his goods to “-”. Remove omd from his list of former partners and remove clucky from omd’s list of former partners. Do this even if Clucky is idle. If Clucky performs any actions which modify his stats in the GNDT between the time this CfJ was posted and when it was enacted, Clucky must be set to idle and may not unidle until a new dynasty starts.

In order for Clucky to have lost -1 Wealth, the concept of “-1 Wealth” had to exist. Because wealth is a non-negative integer, it has been raised that the concept of “-1 Wealth” cannot exist.

The clarification is added because this needed clarifying and to make sure future cases are resolved the same way.

The reset is done out of standard Etiquette. I’m willing to not fight the “-1 Wealth” thing but would’nt have stolen the license if it didn’t work. The other two clauses prevent me from idling to avoid the reset, or from doing anything with my gigantic values while waiting for this to pass.

Proposal: You can’t lose what you don’t have

Self-killed. Josh

Adminned at 23 Jan 2012 23:29:01 UTC

Clucky seems to be under the mistaken impression that he can lose something he doesn’t have - or somehow lose the inverse of that object with respect to posession, thereby gaining it. (despite the rules not saying he has such a object in the first place).

The disputed passage in question is “At any time, the Criminal that possesses the License may at their discretion lose X Wealth and gain F Firepower, where F = X / 2.”

For reference, here is the appropriate definition of “Lose”: “(v) to cease to have or possess”
and Wealth and Firepower are “non-negative integers”.

Under my interpretation of the rule, and the reasonable and intended interpretations, it is simply impossible to lose a negative amount of Wealth based on the definition of ‘lose’.  Any action that loses a negative amount of Wealth thus CANNOT be performed.  The fact that ‘lose’ is defined in a dictionary rather than a rule does not make it mean whatever the actor wants it to (e.g. interpret “change” to mean “cause to achieve victory” with respect to partners.)

Therefore, Clucky’s GNDT stats need to be corrected for the fact that he failed at gaining massive amounts of Wealth and as a result also failed to purchase most of his Firepower.

Proto: The Police

Create a Rule titled “The Police”:

Some Criminals are Agents secretly working for the police.  The Don shall privately track, and keep all Agents informed of, which Criminals are Agents.  Any Criminal who has never been an Agent can become one by informing the Don.

An Agent cannot be the Culprit of an Assisted Action unless the Lookout is another Agent.

The Police Inefficiency is PVN/10 + 5, where PVN is the Police Vigilance Number.

All Criminals who performed that action in the last 24 hours go to Jail, and lose half of any Wealth, Respect, or Firepower they gained as a result of that action, to a minimum of 0.

Amend the rule “Goods” by inserting this paragraph before “The following goods can be Stolen”:

A Criminal may give a Good they possess to another Criminal, lowering their own Respect by half the Good’s Reputation and increasing the recipient’s Respect by the same amount.

Let’s make this deeper.

The theme reminded me of Mafia., so here’s a bit of Mafia in reverse.  The advantage to becoming an Agent: you get to direct the Police, which won’t benefit you directly, but can harm your competition.  The disadvantage: your ability to commit crime is limited, and if someone deduces what’s going on from either that limitation or the Police’s actions, you’re screwed for a while.

You could say I’m… well rounded

“If a rule implies that the result of any calculation should be an integer (for instance, by attempting to store that result in, or add it to, a gamestate variable that can only hold integers), the result of the calculation is instead the result rounded towards 0.”

“The License, listed as “license” - 3750 Security, 0 Reputation. At any time, the Criminal that possesses the License may at their discretion lose X Wealth and gain F Firepower, where F = X / 2.”

I chose to lose -1 wealth and gain F firepower, where F = -1 /2. This rounds to zero, so that is 0 firepower gained.

I then build up millions of wealth, and converted it all to firepower using the license again.

I can effectively have as much firepower and wealth as I want. So can you if you steal the thing from me.

Obviously this should probably be fixed. Unless I’m missing a way to use firepower and wealth to achieve victory (as opposed to reputation, which can be done if you get like four people willing to keep throwing the same guy in jail over and over (which is legal, btw. might want to fix that too)). Of course, if you guys want to grant me victory because this mechanic isn’t working I wouldn’t complain =P But I’ll let someone else make the CfJ that fixes this either way =)

Create a new dynastic rule, “The New Don In Town”:

A Criminal’s Leadership is equal to whichever value is highest out of their Wealth, Firepower, and Respect. When the Police Vigilance Number becomes 200 or more for the first time, whichever Criminal has the most Leadership achieves victory.

I don’t expect this to be achieved, as written, any time remotely soon. But it’s worth having something to work towards, right?

Create a new dynastic rule, “Popular Criminals”:

As an Assisted Action, a Criminal with exactly 5 Criminals and idle Criminals in their Former Partners list before they perform the action may Throw a Party. This increases their Respect by 3000. If the Lookout for that action also had exactly 5 Criminals and idle Criminals in their Former Partners list, their Respect is also increased by 3000.

Proposal: Goods

Timed out and enacted, 6-2. Josh

Adminned at 19 Jan 2012 06:51:23 UTC

Create a new rule “Goods” reading:

Criminals can possess Goods, items listed in an eponymous GNDT column with each Good listed by a name designated by its description. By default, a criminal’s Goods are the null set.

Available Goods are listed in this rule along with a Security and Reputation, both of which are integers. As an assisted action, a Criminal can spend a Good’s Security in Firepower in order to Steal it.

When a Criminal Steals a Good, first, the Criminal lowers the Respect of any other Criminal that possesses the Good by its Reputation and removes the Good from that Criminal’s Loot. The Criminal then increases their own Respect by the Good’s Reputation and then lists the item in their Goods, at which point they possess the Good.

The following goods can be Stolen:

The Hope Diamond, listed as “hope” - 5000 Security, 10,000 Reputation. When the Criminal that Possesses the Hope Diamond gains Respect, they gain 5% more than they would have gained otherwise.’

The Fake Mustache, listed as “mustache” - 50 Security, 2000 Reputation. The Criminal that possesses the Fake Mustache may partner with any Criminal whose name does not appear twice in the possessor’s Former Partners list. Any Criminal may partner with the possessor as long as the possessor’s name doesn’t appear twice in that Criminal’s Former Partners list.

The Badge, listed as “badge” - 1500 Security 5000 Reputation. As an Assisted Action, the Criminal that possesses the Badge may Block an Assisted Action by following the Badge’s listing in the GNDT with its name contained in parentheses. While an Action is Blocked, no Criminal may perform that Assisted Action.
When the Badge is Stolen, all actions cease to be Blocked. Stealing may not be Blocked.
As an Assisted Action, any player may Unblock a Blocked Action, removing its name from after the Badge. That Action may then be performed as prescribed in its description. Unblocking may not be Blocked.

The License, listed as “license” - 3750 Security, 0 Reputation. At any time, the Criminal that possesses the License may at their discretion lose X Wealth and gain F Firepower, where F = X / 2.

Allows for players to own useful items they can steal amongst themselves.

Proposal: Most Wanted

Timed out and failed, 2-5 with 3 unresolved DEFs. Josh

Adminned at 17 Jan 2012 14:16:20 UTC

For each Criminal, add 100 times H to that Criminal’s Respect, where H is the Heat of that Criminal.

Amend rule 2.4 “Heat” by adding the following text as the second paragraph:

With fame and heat comes respect: whenever a Criminal gains N Heat, that Criminal earns 100 times N Respect. Whenever a Criminal loses N Heat, that Criminal loses 100 times N Respect.

Or how about giving the respect bonus according to the place of the Criminal in the heat-sorted list of all Criminals?
Our Don said it would be a pain to track. Ideally the GNDT would do the work for us and be sorted automatically :-)

The Black Market

Given that communication is quite important this dynasty, I thought I’d make this thread for people to coordinate possible Assisted Actions, if they feel like publicly doing it on the blog. Enjoy!

Friday, January 13, 2012

We’re the city’s most wanted criminals, that gotta count for somethin’

For each Criminal, add 16 times H to that Criminal’s Respect, where H is the Heat of that Criminal.

Amend rule 2.4 “Heat” by adding the following text as the second paragraph:

With fame and heat comes respect: whenever the ruleset specifies that a Criminal’s Heat be increased by a positive amount N, that Criminal earns 16 times N Respect. Whenever the ruleset specifies that a Criminal’s heat be decreased by a positive amount N, that Criminal loses 16 times N Respect.

I’ll propose it when I get a slot back. Any reviews are welcome.
I’m not sure about the wording: if a Criminal with 4 Heat goes to prison, the ruleset specifies that his heat “decreases to 0”, not “decreases by 4”, but I still want him to lose 64 Respect.

Friday, January 13, 2012

I’m an idiot

My attempt to put everyone in Jail was mostly illegal because most of the Criminals I Reported had a Heat equal to, not greater than, the Police Vigilance Number.  Please whack me with a stick.

southpointingchariot, Chronos, Spitemaster, and Ltn_Koen are still in jail.  (Ltn_Koen’s Heat was listed as 1, but should have been 2.)

...Just idle me.  I don’t usually fail at reading comprehension this badly.

GNDT

I’ve created the field for tracking the Jail in the GNDT.

The admin who enacted Jail should have done that, not me. I don’t know who it was, and I will not look to see who it was.

We have never had to explicitly create columns in the GNDT, like Koen is doing in his proposal for Families. If the ruleset says something is tracked in the GNDT, obviously we need a column in the GNDT to track that. So, the freaking admin who enacts the darn thing should as well go there and create the effing column.

People, we are not Agora. That invasion failed. We can stop being jerks and resume BN play as usual. Seriously.

Sorry people, I was aggravated with something else and vented it on you. Please forget this post.

Jail

FYI, I have put everyone other than myself in Jail.  This means that no one can perform any Assisted Actions, including Prison Breaks, until a new Criminal joins or unidles, or a proposal such as Chronos’ passes

I was a bit too hasty: even I don’t have a partner to perform any actions with!

Proposal: Chronos got no mob but it’s okay I got a taxi

Timed out and failed, 2-3, with two unresolved DEFs. Josh

Adminned at 15 Jan 2012 02:46:37 UTC

Create a new GNDT column with title “Family”.
Create a new rule, titled “Families” and reading:

Each Criminal may belong to up to one Family; this is tracked in the GNDT. A Criminal who belongs to no Family may set their Family at any time, to any valid English phrase.
At any time, a Criminal may transfer any positive amount of Wealth or Firepower from themselves to any other Criminal that belong to the same Family as they do, unless that would result in either of those two Criminals having negative Wealth or Firepower.

I was gonna propose a fix to Chronos’s proposal, then I saw it was self-killed again… Sorry I did not quote the Appendix fast enough the first time. I tried ten different wordings with “sequence of characters” in place of “valid English phrase” then gave up because I ended up with long boring mathematical sentences.
Btw, Clucky’s “I dislike how there isn’t any control over who is in your family.” got me thinking… Families could be more than just a way to transfer goods. How about families could have some kind of “mini-ruleset” by which its members abide?
This would allow “safe places” for negociations, though not too powerful since you cannot get out of a family easily.

Proposal: Doing the time

Add as the second paragraph of rule Jail:

If the number of complete days since the last time a Criminal went to Jail is greater than their heat and they are still in Jail, then that Criminal may set their own Heat to 1 and set themself to not be in Jail.

If rule 2.3 “Swag” contains the text “Whenever a criminal does an Assisted Action defined in this rule, their Heat is increased by 1”, replace it with “Whenever a criminal does an Assisted Action defined in this rule, their Heat is increased by 1.”.

Append the following text to rule 2.3 “Swag”:

When a Criminal does an Assisted Action defined in this rule, they must make a GNDT comment containing the time, in UTC format, at which they performed it.

If you add someone as your partner, then wait a couple of hours before actually performing the action, only the time of partnering up will be visible in the GNDT. Next Criminal to perform that action would have to infer the time by taking the square root of the wealth/firepower/respect earned, then comparing with the previous time that action was made…

Proposal: There’s no I in TEAM

Reached quorum, final vote 9-2-2 -Klisz

Adminned at 13 Jan 2012 22:02:04 UTC

In “Working Together”, change “a Criminal or Idle Criminal” to “a Criminal or Idle Criminal other than himself”.

Fixes self-partnering across the board (omd’s proposal only fixes it for Assisted Actions).

Proposal: This is not working as intended.

Times out 7-2-2 -Klisz

Adminned at 13 Jan 2012 22:01:21 UTC

In “Working Together”, change

A Criminal (the Culprit) can only perform an Assisted Action if they have a Partner (the Lookout), and the Lookout’s Partner is the Culprit.

to:

A Criminal (the Culprit) can only perform an Assisted Action if another Criminal (the Lookout) is their Partner, and the Lookout’s Partner is the Culprit.

At this rate either the heists will be exhausted so quickly that the three that have already been pulled off for >1000 each will seem like massive grabs, or it will take at least a week before everyone even has themself in their Former Partners list; either way, it would be a bit more interesting to require a modicum of organization.  Partnering with yourself also defeats the purpose of assymmetry: there is no risk of lack of repayment.

Unidle Me :D

Requesting to be unidled.

Proof of concept: raise the PVN to around 350

Anyone want to join me on this? I need 8 other players to make it work, but messing with the dynasty by making the PVN unreasonably high would be loads of fun. Teach ais a lesson for trying to avoid daily actions =) Someone could probably figure out how to make it work with less, but this one is nice and symmetric. (We easily could get away with six by clearing your own list, but it would reduce the amount we can raise the PVN per round by to 9 maxing it out at 45. Fewer than six, if even possible, probably would’nt leave much room for PVN increasing)

Here is how it works:

Nine players, named A1, A2, A3, B1, B2, B3, C1, C2 and C3.

A1 and A2 work to clear A1’s list, A2 and A3 work to clear A3’s list, A3 and A1 work to clear A3’s list. Same for Bs and Cs.

Now each *1 works with himself, and the 4 other 2s and 3s to hack the computers, raising the PVN. Each *2 works with the 1s and 3s, and each *3 works with the 1s and 2s.

This will result in 18 pairs and 9 singles, for a total of 27 added to the PVN. As long as a square is hit, everyones heat goes back to 1. Then A1, B1 and C1 can clear each others lists (effectively becoming the new A1, A2 and A3) and the same for A2, B2 and C2 and A3, B3 and C3. We are back to where we started, so can increase the PVN by 27 again. We can continue to do this as long as all nine people can stay munging with the GNDT.

Growing the PVN by 27 each time, the first time we’d miss a square is getting it to 351 which doesn’t reach 19 squared. But at that point, jailbreaks cost 7000 firework and reporting costs 3500 respect.

So yeah, I’ll be on IRC tonight if enough of you want to help me out. =D

Proposal: Negativity

Adminned at 12 Jan 2012 23:16:57 UTC

Change, in the rule “Swag”, the text:

“Criminals have Wealth, Respect, and Firepower, non-negative integral statistics tracked in the GNDT, each defaulting to 500.”

to

“Criminals have Wealth and Firepower as non-negative integers tracked in the GNDT, each defaulting to 500.

Criminals have Respect as integers tracked in the GNDT which can be positive or negative and defaults to 500. Any Assisted Action that requires a Criminal to pay, spend, or lose their own respect cannot be performed if it would result in that player’s Respect valuing below 0.”

After some discussion with other players and our Don, to avoide potential looping scams, make respect be able to go negative.

Proposal: Get out of Jail, but not for free, II

Timed out and passed, 6-1. Josh

If the Police Vigilance Number is 0, set it to 1.

Create a rule “Jail”, reading:

Criminals may be in Jail. This is tracked in the GNDT. When a Criminal joins the game or unidles they are not in Jail. Criminals in Jail may not be the Culprit or the Lookout of an Assisted Action. When a Criminal goes to Jail their Former Partner list is emptied.

As an Assisted Action, a Criminal can spend R Respect, where R equals 10 times the Police Vigilance Number, in order to Report any Criminal whose Heat is greater than the Police Vigilance Number. This reduces the Culprit’s heat by 5, or to 0 if it was less than 5 before that action, and sends the reported Criminal to Jail.

Add to rule “Swag”:

As an Assisted Action, a Criminal can spend F Firepower, where F equals 20 times the Police Vigilance Number, in order to organize a Prison Break. This allows the Culprit to immediately set any number of other Criminals that are in Jail to not be in Jail anymore. For each Criminal that leaves Jail in that action, the Culprit’s Heat is increased by 2.

I know unidling amounts to an almost Get of the Jail free card, but you still would have to “pay” 4 days off game for that to work, since that’s the cooldown for idling/unidling.

Jailing is an alternative mechanic to emptying one’s former partners list, while still requiring some external cooperation. Note you can report yourself, so reducing the number of people needing to cooperate by 1 (you’d still need someone else to break you free). And together with Families, this also doesn’t completely hose one in Jail.

Proposal: It’s not the mob if you have no families.

If a Criminal has had annother Criminal in their former partners list for the entire span of the last seven days, the first Criminal may remove the second Criminal from their former partners list.

This prevents everything from completely locking up, lets people at least play the dynsaty with only a few friends even if they probably won’t power game, and remains within the dynasty theme (after a while the popo lose track of who you’ve worked with).

Proposal: Free-form disapproval, now with 30 times more disrespect!

Illegal - third pending proposal - coppro

Adminned at 10 Jan 2012 07:40:41 UTC

Create a new dynastic rule titled “Disrespect”:

Each Criminal has a “Disrespects” field in the GNDT, initially blank, which they can blank, or set to the name of a Criminal in their Former Partners list with at least 150 Respect, at any time.  When the value of a Criminal’s Disrespects field is set to the name of a Criminal, that Criminal’s Respect is decreased by 150; when it is changed from the name of a Criminal, that Criminal’s Respect is increased by 150.

To address Bucky’s points:

- The main purpose of this proposal is to address it being too hard to punish someone for not playing fair with asymmetric assisted actions.  While I strongly support asymmetry (it’s more interesting, even if the resulting factions are likely to put me at a disadvantage yet again), and the most interesting way to punish someone is with factions and lack of reciprocation, this is also pretty hard to set up, since the square law makes the cost to a faction of ejecting a member very high—an additional, more direct stick (or a few) would be useful.  Anyway, it makes a lot of thematic sense.

- The penalty was initially too low because I didn’t read the rules properly.  150 would be way too high without “Crime is hot”, since people would probably end up Stealing Masterpieces every hour for a pretty awful almost zero-sum game, but considering that organizing players to Steal Police Files will quickly become very annoying (e.g. if it’s been completed 15 times, completing it again would require 31 partner pairings, or 62 actions by different combinations of people editing the GNDT), and that there are 3 actions, as I see it, it won’t be long before Stealing Masterpieces awards hundreds of Respect a pop, and the penalty becomes relatively minor.  (But a higher value would be more likely to mess up the early game.)

- The proposal is buggy in the sense that idling will permanently lose you disrespect, but this is rather hard to work around under the current ruleset (the obvious way would be to treat Respect as 150 lower than its actual value rather than actually decreasing it, but that would be annoying to track) and not really the end of the world.

Idle Fix

Rewrite the rule 1.2.1 “Idle Crimminals” to state:

Some Crimminals are Idle, and shall be marked as such in the sidebar. For the purposes of the Ruleset, excluding Rules “Ruleset and Gamestate”, “Crimminals” , “Dynasties”, “Fair Play”and any of those Rules’ subrules, Idle Crimminals are not counted as Crimminals .

If a Proposal contains a provision that targets a specifically named Idle Crimminals, then that Idle Crimminals is considered to be Unidle solely for the purposes of enacting that specific provision

When an Crimminals is unidled, if they went Idle in the same dynasty, their personal gamestate retains the last legally endowed values it had, if they are still valid. Otherwise (including if a value is invalid, does not exist, or the Crimminals Idled in a different dynasty), the Crimminals is given the default value for new Crimminals, if such a value exists.

A non-Idle Crimminal may request to go idle by either making a post to the blog detailing this request, or by adding a comment to a post where another driver requested to go idle, another driver requested to unidle, or an admin announced a driver idling or unidling, which was made within the last seven days.

An Idle Crimminal may request to go idle, provided he did not request to go idle within the last four days, by making a post to the blog detailing this request, or by adding a comment to a post where another driver requested to go idle, another driver requested to unidle, or an admin announced a driver idling or unidling, which was made within the last seven days.

If a Crimminal has posted a request to go idle within the last seven days and has not posted a request to unidle since then, or if they have not posted an entry or comment in the last seven days any admin may render that Crimminal idle. The admin must announce the change in a new blog post. Likewise, if a Crimminal has requested to unidle within the last seven days and has not requested to idle since then any admin may unidle that Crimminal. The admin must also announce the change in a new blog post.

Admins may combine multiple posts regarding idling in one. (i.e. announcing their intent to unidle, unindling themself, and resolving the request of another crimminal to idle).

Leaving it as a draft for now as I probably missed stuff.

Unidlings and indlings can be requested by comments, but I think its best if they are announced via blog posts. Also want to explicitly let you say “Bob, Bobby and Bobbet Unidle” instead of “Bob Unidles” in one post and “bobby unidles” in another.

Currently “Any Admin may accordingly render a Driver Idle or remove their Idle status (“unidling”), if that Driver has made a valid Idling Post or Idling Comment in the last seven days. ” is incredibly broken. Both requests to idle and requests to unidle are “valid Indling Comments”. Thus I could theoretically idle Ltn_Koen and a bunch of other people if I felt like being a dick. So we should fix that, and while we’re at it clean up how it all works.

Does anyone remember why we added all the formallity in the first place? Was it just because we didn’t have a timer on idle requests, so someone realized I could take Bucky’s request to go idle from two years ago and use that to idle him?

Pavitra idles out

I hope I can still idle him like this. Quorum drops to 8.

Create a new dynastic rule, “Swag”:

Criminals have Wealth, Respect, and Firepower, non-negative integral statistics tracked in the GNDT, each defaulting to 500.

As an Assisted Action, a Criminal can Rob a Bank. This increases their Heat by 1, and their Wealth by the square of the number of complete hours since any Criminal last Robbed a Bank (or since this rule was enacted, if no Criminal has ever Robbed a Bank).

As an Assisted Action, a Criminal can Pull Off a Daring Heist. This increases their Respect by the square of the number of complete hours since any Criminal last Pulled Off a Daring Heist (or since this rule was enacted, if no Criminal has ever Pulled Off a Daring Heist).

As an Assisted Action, a Criminal can Smuggle Armaments. This increases their Firepower by the square of the number of complete hours since any Criminal last Smuggled Armaments (or since this rule was enacted, if no Criminal has ever Smuggled Armaments).

Create a new dynastic rule, “Heat”:

Criminals can end up being wanted by the police, or other similar law enforcement organisations. This is tracked in the GNDT as a non-negative integer, Heat, that defaults to 1.
There is a number, the Police Cybervigilance Number, initially 0, tracked in the Don’s Heat field in the GNDT.

As an Assisted Action, a Criminal can Hack the Police Computers. This increases the Police Cybervigilance Number by 1, and if it sets it to a square number, also decreases the Heat of every Criminal with positive Heat by 1.

As an Assisted Action, a Criminal with no Heat can Perform Community Service. This increases their Heat to 1, and empties their Former Partner list.

A bunch of statistics to start us off. Apart from the “wanted” statistic that has a use in this proposal, I have no strong plans about what to use the others for, but I’m sure you’ll have plenty of ideas of your own.

By the way, this rule shows off a couple of mechanics I want to try out (the ramped-timing rule that means that delaying an action longer gives you more reward, and is likely to be mostly immune to timing scams for that reason; and the diminishing returns on hacking the police computers).

Performing community service is a little weird; the concept’s that since you’re no longer wanted, your partners are no longer being tracked. I can’t think of a good flavour reason for the Heat returning to 1, but it’s obviously necessary for gameplay reasons.

Proposal: You know, if you want to get anywhere in life, you have to work together

Reaches quorum and passes, 10-0. Josh

Create a dynastic rule, “Working Together”:

Each Criminal has a Partner (the name of a Criminal or Idle Criminal, or possibly empty), and a list of Former Partners (a possibly empty list of Criminals and Idle Criminals), both tracked in the GNDT. When a Criminal joins the game, or unidles for the first time in the dynasty, their Partner and list of Former Partners are set empty.

A Criminal can change their Partner to empty, or to any (non-idle) Criminal who is not on their Former Partners list, at any time.

Some game actions may be defined as Assisted Actions. A Criminal (the Culprit) can only perform an Assisted Action if they have a Partner (the Lookout), and the Lookout’s Partner is the Culprit. Performing an Assisted Action causes both the Culprit’s and the Lookout’s Partner to be set to empty, and the Culprit and Lookout added to each other’s Former Partners lists.

Set each Criminal’s Partner and list of Former Partners to be empty.

Allowing idles in the list seems to be the simplest way to prevent weird gamestate breakage upon players idling. The general concept: you need someone else’s help to do anything, but can’t work with the same criminal twice (to avoid unwarranted attention from the police).

Tracking the list of former partners doesn’t seem to have any obvious location; the GNDT seems the best of a few bad options.

Incidentally, I expect there to be a mechanic to reset former partner lists (in fact, I’m proposing one in the next proposal), so don’t worry too much about the irreversability that would otherwise happen.

Ascension Address: Let’s get this started

An anonymous note turns up just inside your secret hideout…

Too long have you all worked as a disorganised rabble, stealing for your own benefit and competing over scraps of unimportant drug deals. I am sending this note to each one of you, to let you know: I know about you, and I am upset with your performance.

From now on, you work for me. And you work with each other. Not too often, mind; no point in getting caught.

Further instructions will be provided when you have proved yourself trustworthy. For the time being, gather money and armaments to help with a future great operation, and vie for the respect of your peers; not all of you are cut out to be future leaders.

I will not ask you twice. Do not fail me.

—The Don

Replace Driver with Criminal. Replace Dispatcher with Don. Keep the rule “Central Office”, repealing all other dynastic rules.

Ground rules (as in, things that will be vetoed this dynasty): daily actions; weekly actions; randomness; attempts to make me an admin; proposals containing the word “fairy”. You think I’m joking about that last one, right? Do I look like the sort of person who ever jokes?

No, I don’t know what the future great operation is yet, or even if it’ll occur.

I request to be unidled

I request to be unidled.

I did not post this as a comment to Darknight’s post, because they said they would like to be unidled, but didn’t request to be.
You may argue that “unidle please” is a request, but rule 1.2.1 states that “An Idling Post is a post within which a Driver requests to be idled or unidled.”, and I’m not sure whether the title may be considered “within” the blog post.

Per rule 1.2.1, and because it is still valid, once I am unidled, my personal gamestate will retain its last values: Cash is 0, Routes are HiAi*Do*Go*Ro*Ai*Re$*Du*Ai!Ja*Ja*Hi!Ai*Ai*Ja*Hi!Ta!. Not that it matters.

However I would like to point out that, though per rule 1.7, ais523’s Ascension Address “may optionally specify that the terms Driver and Dispatcher will be replaced with theme-specific terms throughout the entire ruleset”, I don’t believe it may make me a theme-specific Player, and thus I believe I will stay the Driver I became when Josh “added [me] to the roster in the sidebar and the GNDT”, as per rule 1.2.

One last thing: we’re currently in Hiatus, per rule 1.7: “During this time, the only game actions that may be taken are those covered by Rules “Drivers”, “Votable Matters”, “Calls for Judgment”, “Gamestate Tracking” and “Victory and Ascension”.
Unidling is covered only by rule “Idle Drivers”. You may argue that a subrule is part of the rule it is a subrule to, but if that is the case I suggest this be added to the Appendix.
Rule 1.2.1 contains the text “For the purposes of the Ruleset, excluding Rules “Ruleset and Gamestate”, “Drivers” , “Dynasties”, “Fair Play”and any of those Rules’ subrules, Idle Drivers are not counted as Drivers.”, which makes me think subrules are not part of the rule they are a subrule of.

unidle please

I would like to be unidled. I’d do it myself but i’m not posting this by way of a computer.

We apologise for the delay, and any inconvenience caused

I’d just like to say that I’m sorry for not starting the next dynasty yet. I’m a little exhausted, having a few problems with my RL sleep patterns, and I’ve tried a couple of times to write the start of the dynasty and not really managed it. I may be able to start it in the next couple of days, but maybe not.

If people think this is unreasonable, and it may well be, I’d be happy to pass the mantle to some Emperor who has more time than me to run a dynasty, and hold the theme back for another time.

Let’s try this again

I request to be unidled.

Unidlings ahoy!

I request to be unidled.

I’ve unidled the backlog of unidle requests, along with myself. Quorum is now 8.

What could possibly go wrong?

I request to unidle.

Since everyone else is making posts rather than comments…

I request to unidle.

Meta-humor really isn’t very funny or deep

I am requesting to be unidled.

Unidle me, please

That was a good holiday

I go away for 3 weeks and this happens. Please unidle me.

Declaration of Victory: The Golden Avenue

Enacted, 4 votes to 0. ais523 may post his ascension at his leisure. Josh

Adminned at 04 Jan 2012 02:02:40 UTC

I just drove an Active Golden Route, with four other Golden Routes in my pool at the time. Thus, I achieve victory.

Thanks to the GNDT randomizer for getting a Golden Route in the first two of my pool, meaning I didn’t have to wait until tomorrow. Also, thanks to it for giving me Golden Routes from Tailgate Routes twice. (I bought two earlier at a cost of 15 each, and bought a surcharged one at 17 today with the help of income from scouting a Dump Route.)

Blockade: Blockade Route

So, Blockade routes are up to 13. Let’s see how long this can go before it becomes inordinately silly.

Proposal: I’d still prefer to win legitimately this dynasty

Enacted, 4-0. Josh

Adminned at 03 Jan 2012 06:06:56 UTC

In the subrule “Idle Drivers”, change

Any idle Driver, provided they did not go idle within the same dynasty in the previous four days, may submit an Idling Post or Idling Comment requesting themselves to be unidled.

to

Any idle Driver, if they did not go idle within the same dynasty in the previous four days, or if their most recent idling was as a result of not posting an entry or comment for a seven-day period, may submit an Idling Post or Idling Comment requesting themselves to be unidled.

Bucky is barred from unidling due to a core rules bug. Whilst this is hilarious, it’s not going to be much fun playing it out from here with no competition, and we could do with fixing the bug for the future, too. This was actually annoyingly hard to word…

I do not want to be idle

Adminned at 01 Jan 2012 15:49:52 UTC

I make myself unidle.  Quorum becomes 5.

EDIT: I cannot make myself unidle due to sloppy wording in 1.2.

Proposal: Streamlined idling

Self-killed. Josh

Adminned at 03 Jan 2012 06:06:15 UTC

In rule 1.2, to the end of the following:

Any idle Driver, provided they did not go idle within the same dynasty in the previous four days, may submit an Idling Post or Idling Comment requesting themselves to be unidled.

Add:

An admin who unlidles themselves may skip this step when doing so.

Stalled

Bucky, Darknight, Murphy, Prince Anduril and Soviet Brendon all idle out after protracted periods of non-posting, and I unidle, leaving quorum at a highly agile 4.
