I’m working on moving the main blog to HTTPS at the moment. Expect rampant brokenness.

EDIT: This went way more smoothly than I anticipated. Let me know on Slack if I missed something obviously broken. I’ll leave this stickied for a day or so, if I forget to come unstick it anyone else can do so at will

Proposal: Rounding Up

Timed out 2 votes to 0. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 01 Jan 2017 23:48:05 UTC

Add a new rule, “The Doctor’s Rounds”:-

As a daily and atomic action which may only be taken on Mondays and Thursdays, the Doctor may make his Rounds by taking the following actions in sequence (with all random decisions and chances being secretly random):-

  • Making any Villager who has not yet been Inspected during this dynasty Inspected: when a Villager becomes Inspected, they have a 10% chance of catching a random Disease.
  • For each Disease a Villager has which they do not already exhibit all the Symptoms of, tossing a coin: on heads, that Villager gains the earliest Symptom of that Disease which they do not already exhibit.
  • For each Villager with a Contagious disease, giving that Disease to every Villager who is Near to that Villager.
  • For each Symptom exhibited by a Villager which does not belong to any Disease that Villager has, removing that Symptom from that Villager.
  • For each Remedy which has never been Tested, Testing it.
  • Making a blog post announcing that the Doctor has made his Rounds.

Delete the final paragraph of “Diseases” and the final paragraph of “Symptoms”.

In “Remedies”, replace “If a Remedy has never been Tested, the Doctor may Test it and announce in a blog post that he has done so: upon doing this,” with:-

When a Remedy is Tested

Putting all of the Doctor’s duties into a single atomic action.

Proposal: Bark for Mandrake

Add a new Location to the “Locations” rule:-

  • The Market: A Villager at the Market may swap two units of the same Remedy in their inventory (other than Well Water) for a single unit of any Remedy, at any time.

Add a new Remedy to the “Remedies” rule:-

  • Salt

The Doctor’s Rounds

The Doctor has no new visible symptoms to report among the villagers of Zahndorf.

Walking the Village

Seasonal Downtime ends

BlogNomic is out of Hiatus and now merely Dormant, awaiting a fifth player before gameplay can resume.

Saturday, December 24, 2016

Seasonal Downtime begins

Per Rule 1.9, BlogNomic is now on Hiatus for three days. We’ll return to being simply Dormant on Tuesday, or back to actual active gameplay if a fifth player joins or unidles before then.

Happy Seasonal Downtime, everyone.

Thursday, December 22, 2016

BlogNomic is Dormant

With the enactment of Ghost Town on the 22nd of December, BlogNomic has switched into its Dormant state, as it currently has fewer than five players. This is a new mechanic which means that most gameplay is temporarily suspended until we have five players again:

If there are fewer than five Villagers, then BlogNomic is Dormant. While BlogNomic is Dormant, actions defined by dynastic rules may not be taken, and proposals may not be submitted.

If you’re a lurker who’s been considering joining or unidling, or a regular player who knows someone who might want to play, now would be a good time.

Proposal: Never Did Me Any Harm

Timed out 2 votes to 0. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 27 Dec 2016 10:15:34 UTC

Add a subrule to “Remedies”, called “Stories”:-

Every family in Zahndorf has its own encouraging or cautionary tale about folk medicine. If they have not yet done so during the current dynasty, a Villager may privately contact the Doctor asking to recall such a story. In response, the Doctor should select a secretly random Remedy, and then select either its “Cure” or “Cause” quality in a secretly random manner (even if it cures or causes nothing): the Doctor then privately informs the Villager of that quality.

In “Numbers and Variables”, after “This value must be determined by an appropriate DICE roll in the GNDT, unless otherwise specified.” add:-

If a selection is explicitly specified as being “secretly” random, the Villager making this determination may do so using a private method of their choosing, instead of the GNDT.

The Doctor’s Rounds

The Doctor stalks cautiously through Zahndorf, cutting through the bracken of the dark forest as he returns to his surgery. He notes no visible symptoms among the villagers.

Proposal: Ghost Town

Adminned at 22 Dec 2016 20:11:16 UTC

Enact a new rule, “Dormancy”:-

If there are fewer than five Villagers, then BlogNomic is Dormant. While BlogNomic is Dormant, actions defined by dynastic rules may not be taken, and proposals may not be submitted.

Player numbers are dwindling again, and there’s always the perverse incentive for every player to react to this by simply encouraging it further: if everyone else stops paying attention and no new players join, you win. Maybe it’s worth seeing what happens if we raise a flag and pause the game instead, when this happens.

Trying this as a dynastic rule, could make it a core if it seems to work.

Got the Morbs

Phildor idles out after a week with no comments or posts. The Doctor paints a heavy black cross on their front door. Quorum remains 3.

Proposal: Amongst Our Weaponry

Quorums 3-0. — Quirck

Adminned at 22 Dec 2016 11:26:01 UTC

In “Remedies”, replace “counts as carrying three remedies” with:-

counts as carrying four remedies

Upon this changing, if Matt has three Well Waters then he loses one. Then, if any Villager has more than three Remedies, they lose Remedies at random until they have only three.

Proposal: Take That

Reached quorum 3 votes to 0. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 21 Dec 2016 22:25:17 UTC

Remove any paragraph beginning “A Villager may use a Remedy they are carrying”.

Replace any paragraph beginning “A Villager may take a Remedy” with:-

A Villager may remove a Remedy they are carrying from their inventory to use it on a Villager (either themselves or a Villager who is Near to them), by making a blog post announcing this. The Villager it is used on is known during this process as “the Taker”. The Doctor may respond to such a post by confirming that the Remedy has taken effect: upon doing so, if that Remedy cures a Disease the Taker has then the Taker loses that Disease; then, if it causes a Disease that the Taker does not have, the Taker catches that Disease. If the Taker is not the same Villager as the Villager who took the action, the Doctor may not respond to such a post within 24 hours or after 48 hours of it being made, and may only respond to it if the Taker is Near to the Villager who took the action.

Changing the forced medicine to work the same way as taking it yourself: you make a blog post, and the Doctor responds at his leisure.

Proposal: Well, Well, Well

Reached quorum 3 votes to 0. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 21 Dec 2016 22:24:50 UTC

In the Rule Locations, change:

As a daily action, a Villager in the Town Square may add any amount of Well Water to their inventory.

to

As a daily action, a Villager in the Town Square may add multiple units of Well Water to their inventory.

In the rule Remedies after:

Each Villager may carry up to three Remedies, listed in the GNDT, and may carry more than one of the same Remedy.

append:

Carrying more than one of the same remedy counts as multiple remedies, e.g., Carrying Well water, Well water, Well water, Silver bark counts as carrying three remedies.

Also, change the Gamestate to reduce any multiples of the same remedies held by a Villager to fit this interpretation of “multiple”.

There exists an ambiguity in “Each Villager may carry up to three Remedies” whether “three” means three total or three distinct. This fixes the issue and an issue with Well Water that could cause fractions or other strange quantities. It also fixes the Gamestate of Villagers (e.g., Matt) to reduce the count of remedies held to align with this absolute interpretation of multiple of the same -> multiple overall.

In the bulleted list in “Locations”, update the “Town Square”, “The Forest” and “The Surgery” to read as follows:-

  • Town Square: As a daily action, a Villager in the Town Square may add any amount of Well Water to their inventory.
  • The Forest: As a daily action, a Villager in the Forest may add a random plant (Mandrake, Nightshade, Red Cap, Silver Bark or Wolfsbane) to their inventory.
  • The Surgery: If a Villager is alone in the Surgery, they may add a random Remedy to their inventory at any time.

The Doctor’s Rounds

Proposal: Snake Oil

Reached quorum 3 votes to 0. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 15 Dec 2016 18:58:31 UTC

Enact a new rule, “Remedies”:-

For generations, the people of Zahndorf have used a variety of traditional, locally-sourced Remedies to treat their illnesses, namely:-

  • Leeches
  • Mandrake
  • Nightshade
  • Red cap
  • Silver bark
  • Well water
  • Wolfsbane

Each Remedy may Cure one Disease and/or Cause one Disease, tracked secretly by the Doctor, and each defaults to doing neither. If a Remedy has never been Tested, the Doctor may Test it and announce in a blog post that he has done so: upon doing this, there is a 50% chance that the Remedy now Cures a random Disease, and an additional and separate 50% chance that it now Causes a random Disease. (These random selections are made privately using a method of the Doctor’s choosing.)

Each Villager may carry up to three Remedies, listed in the GNDT, and may carry more than one of the same Remedy. A Villager may give a Remedy they are carrying to another Villager who is Near to them, at any time.

A Villager may take a Remedy they are carrying by removing it from their inventory and making a blog post announcing this. The Doctor may respond to such a post by confirming that the Remedy has taken effect: upon doing so, if that Remedy cures a Disease the Villager has then the Villager loses that Disease; then, if it causes a Disease that the Villager does not have, the Villager catches that Disease.

Give the Doctor three Remedies, each chosen at random, and each other Villager a single random Remedy.

Proposal: The Long Run

Timed out 2 votes to 1. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 15 Dec 2016 17:58:21 UTC

Enact a new rule, “Endgames”:-

If all but one Villager is exhibiting Death, then the Villager who is not exhibiting Death is Remembered.

Whenever a Villager catches the Black Death, all Villagers Near to them who already had the Black Death gain one Memento Mori. (Memento Mori are tracked privately by the Doctor.) If all Villagers are exhibiting Death, the Villager with the most Memento Mori is Remembered. (Any ties for this are broken according to fewest Symptoms.)

If the date is on or after the 28th of December 2016 and a single Villager is Remembered, then that Villager has achieved victory.

A reproposal of Phildor’s victory condition, making the all-dead tiebreaker less subjective (although another level wouldn’t hurt once we’ve got more stats) and delaying any potential victory until after the Christmas Hiatus.

Proposal: Contagion Restrictus

Reached quorum 4 votes to 0. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 14 Dec 2016 22:17:38 UTC

In the rule “Locations” change:

A Villager may change their own Location at any time.

to

A Villager may change their own Location once per day.

Proposal: Out and About

Reached quorum 4 votes to 0. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 14 Dec 2016 08:13:58 UTC

Enact a new rule, “Locations”:-

Each Villager has a Location, tracked in the GNDT and defaulting to Home. (A value of “Home” may be tracked as “-”.) Valid Locations are:-

  • Town Square
  • The Church
  • The Forest
  • The Surgery
  • Home

A Villager may change their own Location at any time.

Two Villagers are considered to be Near to one another if they share a Location, and if that Location is not “Home”.

To the end of “Symptoms”, add:-

Then, any Villager who is Near to a Villager with a Contagious Disease catches that Disease (if they do not already have it).

Replace “the Doctor may Examine the Villagers” with:-

the Doctor may Examine the Villagers by making a blog post to this effect

Add “This disease is Contagious.” to both Ague and The Black Death.

Proposal: Last Man Standing

Fewer than a quorum of players not voting AGAINST. Failed by Kevan.

Adminned at 13 Dec 2016 17:43:01 UTC

Enact a new rule “Victory Condition: Survivor”:

If there is exactly one villager that does not exhibit the Death symptom for a period of 48 hours, regardless of current or previous other symptoms, that villager will be proclaimed Last Man Standing.

However, if all villagers exhibit the Death symptom, the villager with the lowest number of symptoms will be declared Least Sick Villager. In case of a tie, a medical examination by the Doctor will determine the Least Sick Villager, based on the Doctor’s medical expertise (length of time sick, number of symptoms, nature of disease, at Doctor’s discretion).

Finally, the Last Man Standing, or failing that, the Least Sick Villager is then allowed to make a declaration of victory.

Might be an idea to codify the tiebreaker variables. Possible to amend paragraph 2 if a way around death is possible.

Walking the Village

The Doctor returns from visiting Phildor.

Greetings From Phildor

Greetings fellow villagers of this fine village of Zahndorf.

  • Death. Visible. A Villager exhibiting Death may not take actions defined by dynastic rules.

Add “Death” as a fourth Symptom of the Black Death.

Walking the Village

Masked back up and smelling strongly of camphor, the Doctor walks through the quiet streets of Zahndorf, knocking on doors and performing a preliminary Inspection of the villagers (including himself) for any signs of illness.

(The ruleset does not currently require the Doctor to announce whether or not he has Examined anyone today.)

Proposal: Rash Conclusions

Passes 3-0. — Quirck

Adminned at 12 Dec 2016 14:41:16 UTC

Enact a subrule to “Diseases” called “Symptoms”:-

Each Villager may exhibit one or more Symptoms, and some of those Symptoms may be Visible. A Villager’s Visible Symptoms are tracked in the GNDT, and their non-Visible Symptoms are tracked privately by the Doctor. Symptoms and their effects are:-

  • Cough. Visible. A Villager exhibiting a Cough should include the string “*cough*” in every blog comment they make.
  • Headache.
  • Mouth Pain.
  • Sore Throat.

When a Villager starts to exhibit a non-Visible Symptom, the Doctor must privately inform them of this fact.

As a daily action which may only be taken on Mondays and Thursdays, the Doctor may Examine the Villagers. Upon doing so, for each Disease a Villager has which they do not already exhibit all the Symptoms of, that Villager has a 50% chance of exhibiting the earliest Symptom of that Disease which they do not already exhibit. (The Doctor may resolve this using a random method of his choice.)

In “Diseases”, replace “When a Villager catches a Disease, the Doctor must privately inform them of this fact.” with:-

Each Disease has a number of Symptoms, listed in order from earliest to latest.

List the symptoms of Ague as “Headache”, the symptoms of The Black Death as “Headache, Sore Throat, Cough”, the symptoms of the Pox as “Mouth Pain, Sore Throat, Cough” and the symptoms of Toothache as “Mouth Pain”.

Might be more interesting if the villagers themselves aren’t entirely sure what they’ve got.

Proposal: Say “Ah”

Reached quorum 3 votes to 0. Enacted by Kevan. I’ll hold off on Walking the Village to see if Rash Conclusions passes.

Adminned at 11 Dec 2016 13:54:01 UTC

Enact a new rule, “Diseases”:-

Each Villager has zero or more Diseases, tracked privately by the Doctor. When a Villager catches a Disease, the Doctor must privately inform them of this fact.

The Diseases a Villager may have are:-

  • Ague
  • The Black Death
  • The Pox
  • Toothache

At any time, the Doctor may Walk the Village by posting a blog entry to this effect: upon doing so, any Villager who has not yet been Inspected during this dynasty becomes Inspected, and has a 10% chance of catching a random Disease. (These random determinations are made privately by the Doctor using a method of his choosing.)

Ascension Address: Plague Comes To Zahndorf

After nine quiet years, a masked and curiously-attired stranger walks the mountain path into the isolated village of Zahndorf. The night watchman, still on patrol as the sun rises, calls out and raises a brightly glinting crossbow. The stranger nervously unbuckles his cumbersome leather mask, drops a heavy bundle of posters and brass instruments at his feet, and remaining at some distance, clears his throat.

“How many deaths since the summer?” he shouts.

Change “Player” to “Villager” and “Emperor” to “Doctor” throughout the ruleset. Keep the “Atomic Actions” dynastic rule.

Declaration of Victory: Crystal Clear

Day Five currently has 16 Settings: 2 Lost Hours and 14 Lost Hours. I am Guardian of 7 of that Day’s Hours, and southpointingchariot is the Guardian of 1. I currently have 19 Quartzes in my possession.

“If a Player has a number of Quartzes equal to or greater than the number of Settings in a Day, and if that Player is the Guardian of more Hours in that Day than any other Player, then that Player has achieved victory. This is known as a Crystal Victory.”

I am not the Timekeeper. (Or I am the Timekeeper and am lying, and this is not a legal DoV.)

I believe I have achieved a Crystal Victory.

I’d hold back if I thought a CfJ over Clucky’s tweet would overturn this, but even without those bonus Quartzes - +1 for Clucky’s public message, +1 for having been able to restore an Hour adjacent to Clucky’s Restored one - I’d still have enough to match the Settings here.

If any Players joined the game or unidled while this proposal was pending, set each of those Players’ Quartzes to the arithmetic mean of the Quartzes (rounding up) of the Players who did not join or unidle while this proposal was pending.

  • If the Hour so rolled is Broken, the Emperor’s Ticks decrease by one.
  • If the Hour so rolled is Lost, the Emperor’s Ticks are decreased by twelve, and each other Player gains one Quartz.
