[ Reproposing a fixed version of this. The current “any italicised word is ignored” leaves us open to sneaky “players with negative karma may not

declare victory” type scams (which we’ve apparently had happen in the past). ]

In the glossary, reword 3.1 (Typographic Conventions) to:-

If more than half of the words in a sentence of a rule or proposal are visibly italicised, then that sentence is Flavor Text and is not a legally binding part of the gamestate or ruleset. Flavor Text may be used to clarify proposals or rules with examples, notes or descriptive text.

for, although ‘visibly italicised’ could cause trouble. Messing around with a sentence that became gradually more italicised as time went on is the sort of ridiculous thing that would be needed to break that, though, probably.

AGAINST!  This would allow the admin who enacts it to disable or ammend arbitrary portions of the ruleset by adding italic text immediately before enacting it.  Since italic text in the ruleset is currently not gamestate, it can be added and/or modified without restriction.

But adding it in that way would be changing the Gamestate, wouldn’t it?

My basic arguments on IRC: Italic text on the wiki at the moment isn’t in the ruleset, by definition. If this proposal passes, it still won’t be in the ruleset, because it wasn’t before and nothing caused it to be. (Instead of having a ruleset with ignored italic text inside it, we have, and will have, a ruleset with ignored italic text on the same page that isn’t part of it. The wiki is not the ruleset, it just lists what the ruleset is. Passing this proposal would cause the wiki to become wrong if Bucky tries this scam, by changing conventions; it won’t cause the ruleset to incorporate text that was never part of it.

If something like this is to pass, maybe it should be worded to remove existing italicized text that is less than 50% of the sentence it is in, to prevent scams or people thinking they can get away with a scam that way.
