Proposal: Night Watchman Fix

Passed, finally, 8-2.  Brendan

Adminned at 19 Oct 2007 09:58:15 UTC

If the proposal “Quis Custodiet Lycanthropus?” fails, this proposal does nothing.

Replace the text of the subrule “The Night Watchman” with:

Whenever a Villager is killed by Werewolves as a result of Rule 2.2, the Mayor will email the Night Watchman (if there is one, and if they are still alive) with an alphabetised list of Villagers who the Watchman has seen on the streets that night. This list shall consist of a random living werewolf, plus a N other randomly selected villagers where N is half(rounded up) of all living Villagers, excluding the previously selected werewolf.

A Villager may only become the Night Watchman as a result of a Town Meeting.

The night watchman in its current form is too powerful, not because it is easy for him to find a werewolf, but because if he does that automatically clears everyone else on the list. It would be better to put a werewolf in there, and then randomly select the rest.

i was wondering the same thing, but then realized the conflict of interest i have myself—if i vote yes, it’s out of fairness to the nomic, but if i were voting as a villager, i’d want to vote no, because it makes things better for villagers (assuming the night watchman lasts a night and isn’t a werewolf). on the other hand, a werewolf would want to vote yes, unless doing so would cast suspicion on himself.

oh, so confusing…

imperial cov—i have to let the mayor help with this little quagmire. for the record, my preference is yes, but the night watchman is currently an uncoveted position anyway that will ensure a short lifespan for its holder, so not sure this really changes anything with the current ruleset.

Actually, this is a classic example where a werewolf would vote against to try and make it look like they are good so that later they can see “Why would I, a werewolf, have voted against this proposal”. Meanwhile, someone with nothing to hide is going to realize that this proposal really is fair and regardless of the fact that it helps the werewolves, it should be passed and thus they will vote FOR it.
