ADMIN REMINDER: Announcing arrival

For everyone trying to count votes: note that an admin cannot register a human as an Artist unless they make a post announcing their arrival.

If their arrival was announced in some other way, such as making a vote, it thus means that it was not their post announcing their arrival (unless it’s as explicit as “I have arrived”, which would announce it again). Thus, it is illegal to add such humans as Artists per 1.2. (This may be a bug in 1.2.)

I’m not sure I agree with that interpretation. A player that is new can announce their arrival multiple times.

But an implicit announcement of arrival, if you assume such things exist (I think they do), is only the first interaction made.

An explicit announcement of arrival is a different matter.

But unless they explicitly announce their arrival again, it doesn’t work; just stating that they want to play doesn’t re-announce their arrival, it just states that they want to play.

In that case no post except those explicitly stating arrival count.

That interpretation is reasonable, although probably gamebreaking.

Well it can’t be both ways. Either post that aren’t the first indicating a desire to play are implicitly announcing their arrival or first posts do not announce arrival.

A post announces arrival if it explicitly says something along the lines of “I have arrived.” I think we both agree with that.

However, it’s also possible to determine that someone has arrived because they start interacting with the blog. (Announcing a desire to play is unconnected with announcing arrival; imagine someone saying “I want to play BlogNomic” to a friend, or to an audience, after reading the Wikipedia article.) In that case, their first interaction with the blog is, in some sense, announcing their arrival, as you can deduce from that that they arrived.

Future interactions aren’t an arrival, as the player was already there.

They certainly need to make a /post/ announcing their arrival. A comment isn’t enough.

However making a post indicating their desire to play is implicitly saying that they came to the game.

Also, if this is the case we would have to go through every single active players initial arrival to see if they are legitimate players.

I tend to agree with Amnistar’s interpretation. One can announce one’s arrival with, say, a trumpet fanfare. One doesn’t need to actually say that oneself has arrived.

ais523:

But say you play the trumpet, then you play the trumpet again. Is the second instance announcing your arrival? No, because you’ve already arrived. It’s just reminding everyone that you’re already here, in an obnoxious and trumpety sort of way.

No but if I walk in the room and socialize for a bit then yell hey guys I want to chat with everyone. That is announcing my arrival. It’s announcing it late, but its announcing it.

I disagree. You can arrive, at say, a party, without being immediately announced, nor would showing up necessarily count as announcement. In fact, you could be announced /before/ you arrive, such at a concert.

@Rodney: Do you favour the interpretation that only joining posts which explicitly announce arrival count, then?

ChronosPhaenon:

Saying “I want to play, add me, please” has been used countless time around Blognomic’s history as the arrival announcement. Please, this is not Agora.

just to note, players don’t need to make a post to de-idle, just to register.

I don’t see why jsut posting isn’t enough. Just because something isn’t obvious doesn’t make it *not* an announcement. (Woo yeah, triple negative.
