I’m staying idle, but here’s a question.

Is the #nomic IRC channel still in use?

I’ve popped in from time to time and its been empty. I see it got removed from the sidebar at some point.

It never worked for me, and according to the comments I read, it didn’t seem to work for anyone at all.

As it was mostly a waste of space in the sidebar, I decided to comment it out in the source, so it doesn’t show up anymore. However, it would only be a matter of uncommenting it to bring it up again.

I did that…a while ago.  Deleted it.

The sidebar box stopped updating when the IRC host stopped providing a scrapeable web page that told us how many people were active in the channel. But the link was still good, the Java interface still worked, and the channel is still around.

Maybe we should get one of those 21st-century live chat window things instead?

Digging around randomly, there’s “Chatango”, which would look like this in the sidebar, and has a full-page version.

Any thoughts?

I’m a fan of Chatango, works both for live chat and people can review logs.

Looks fine! Could be a good addition.

I’m for it.

Hmm, I’m actually against Chantago since it functions more as a public message board than it does a live chat.

#nomic was really good for trading information, scheming to win the dynasty, working out proposed rule text, and thinking up ideas for the next dynasty.

Plus, it gave players an easy way to converse about the world outside the (then) current Blognomic dynasty - having that link on the main page decreased the activation energy of entering the chat, especially when you could see there were 7 other people in the chat.

I’m not so sure Chantago’s would be a good alternative - the presence of chat logs eliminates the ability to scheme or talk about anything in secret, so I feel Chantago talk would be limited to “this is cool” and its variants.

that’s true…is there another way we could work around this?  an alternate client?

Actually, it looks like SlashNET were maybe just using a different URL scheme (either that or they took the page down, and put it back up again more recently). I’ll work to get a new IRC link into the sidebar, this afternoon.
