As discussed in IRC, should we move?

We have been having problems with EE lately, a few of which are game-breaking.  (unclosed tags destroying everything, glitch admins)

Should we move?

Not to mention Rogue Admin! I think that we should.

At the very least we should update to the latest version of EE.

I don’t want to leave the site, and, should we decide to switch to something else, I volunteer to take over the duties 75th is currently doing.  My job in tech support gives me a lot of time to work on stuff behind the scenes, as well as knowledge about the web-side stuff.

If neccessarry I’d also be willing to spend some money on hosting/replacing EE.

From what Wakukee has said, and cutting through the secrecy and mystical Jedi speak, his “glitch admin powers” appear to be the same basic abilities that any EE user has; there are a few weak quirks of the engine and a few minor problems in trying to impose our game structure on an engine that was designed for freely communal blogging. But none of it is “game breaking”, and leaving an italic tag open until someone closes it is hardly “destroying everything”.

The only “game-breaking” ability Wakukee has claimed is that he can edit other people’s posts without being an admin, but he admits that this only happens at “random” and hasn’t yet replicated it. (If he can add a message to this post, I’ll take it seriously.)

It’d be great if 75th Trombone could find the time to upgrade EE to the latest version, which may fix some of these issues, but we’ve got a pretty good custom blogging engine set up here, I don’t see any pressing reason to change it, and I can’t imagine any other service would be any better, out of the box.

I’m up for that, but we should get one (or maybe two) new super admins.  We should also look at the current hosting method and see what would need to be changed to improve hosting, as the site just went down.

Remember Wakky’s GNDT bolding?

Not happening again.

But not usually there.

What’s with the screenshot?

It shows the “edit” options. Although you guys knew perfectly well that Wak was doing stuff like that.

But presumably Wakukee can’t actually click any of those “edit” links and edit a post, or he would have done so?

A non-admin being able to see the word “edit” is hardly game-breaking.

I’m not sure what Rodlen means by asking “Remember Wakky’s GNDT bolding?” - the GNDT isn’t part of EE, and the fact that it didn’t strip invalid HTML is just a minor bug that’s now been fixed.

against I don’t like EE but the alternatives are mostly worse and this works

Well, it’s not like we would just decide to move and then randomly move.  If we decided we wanted to move we would look into options, and make choices after we explore the alternatives.
