Proposal: ‘a sorrow’s crown of sorrow is remembering happier things’

Enact a new rule entitled “Memories”:

The heavy cryoprotectants and tight extraterrestrial quarters of the journey have a clinically proven effect on the higher mental processes of exposed Crewmembers. The amnesia and paranoia of long-term suspension gradually clear up as Crewmembers become reacquainted with the spacefaring routine. Androids may also experience simulated memory glitches due to intrusion of residual cryovapor into their personality circuits.

When a Crewmember Recalls a Memory, the Ship’s Computer sends them a private message containing a new Memory, consisting of randomly-chosen Coord, Thing, and Mood components. (The Computer should not use GNDT dice for this purpose if doing so could allow other Crewmembers to reconstruct others’ Memories.)

Valid Coord components are: Childhood, Academy, Training, and Flight.

Valid Thing components are: Belief, Decision, Desire, Discovery, Effort, Journey, Loss, and Togetherness.

The combination of a Coord and a Thing is called an Event.

Valid Mood components are the same as valid Emotions.

If the new Memory’s Event matches that of a Memory of another Crewmember, the new Memory also includes the name of that Crewmember.

Append to the first two steps of the mission processing protocol in the rule “Missions”:

Each Crewmember of the Responder Team Recalls a Memory.

I like the flavour of it, I’m just a bit concerned that this might be too much effort for the Computer, compared to the effect it has.

I realize that this would make more thematic and pragmatic sense if it only applied to Humans, but then the practical guarantee would overshadow the romance of it. It might be improved by giving Androids something like a 1/4 chance of recollection.

And yes, Sphinx does raise a valid possibility.
