Proposal: A fair lock for a brighter future

Self-killed and failed. Josh

Adminned at 06 Apr 2011 11:55:42 UTC

Add a new rule to the end of section 2 of the ruleset, entitled The Strong Lock:

Mornington Crescent is considered to be locked for the purposes of the rule entitled Locked Stations, but it can’t be unlocked using the UNLOCK trail.

Mornington Crescent is considered to be unlocked when the following four stations have oddities that contain the name of a species of gemstone: East Putney, Turnpike Lane, Cyprus, and Van Dorn Street.

Remove Mornington Crescent from the list of locked stations in the Locked Stations rule. If Proposal: Mr. Smith Goes to Washington failed, change “Van Dorn Street” in this proposal to “Pinner”. If the rule entitled “Trails” contains the following sentence: “Mornington Crescent cannot be unlocked this way, unless it is the only locked station”, remove it.

I should point out that the wiki already has something kinda sorta like a list of gemstones:

Yay! The usefulness of that page never ceases to amaze me. =P

I’m dubious of the Wikipedia link. Either it’s there to say “here is a list of gemstone species which will give you a good idea of which ones exist, but it isn’t meant to canonically define what is and isn’t a gemstone species” or it’s “any species listed on this Wikipedia article is valid, at any given moment”. Either of these interpretations could harbour a scam.

I’m not sure the actual mechanic is that interesting, either, as the ruleset stands. If Mornington Crescent only unlocks when the final Odd proposal enacts, then the winner of the game will be whoever is awake (and only moderately prepared) at that moment.

Would be in favor if you switched from the wikipedia link, back to the old list of chinese non-metalic resources page. Wikipedia is too easy to edit temporarily. Another valid option would be to specify the date of the wikipedia link (eg: as it exists as of…)

I agree with Kevan.  We could add a game page listing valid gemstones, rather than relying on Wikipedia.

I misread this first time around, thinking that one’s trail would have to include the gemstone stations, rather than them merely having Oddities on them.  The way it reads right now, Odd proposals on these stations are going to be consistently knocked down; there is zero incentive to vote for them.

against This rule is equivalent to “Mornington Crescent can only be unlocked by proposal”, which is effectively equivalent to “Players can only win by proposal”. That’s not an interesting mechanic at all.
