Adminned at 02 Dec 2009 18:03:56 UTC

If the Proposal titled “Veto Express, Now With Absolutely No Scam Whatsoever” failed, this Proposal does nothing.

Add the following to Rule 1.5 Enactment:

When the Artisan votes to VETO a Proposal, any Admin may fail that Proposal from that moment on, even if it is not the oldest Pending Proposal.

Remove the bullet point reading:

The Artisan has voted to VETO it

from Rule 1.5 Enactment.

If at least half of all EVCs on this proposal also contain the text “OVERTURN”, replace the text:

The Artisan may vote to VETO any Proposal.

in Rule 1.8 Dynasties with:

The Artisan may vote to VETO any Proposal, unless at least a Quorum of Apprentices have voted FOR it.

I fixed the complaints from the last proposal.

Add the following text to the end of Rule 2.5.1 Basic Spells:

The spell Appetizers has “TAPAS” as its Activation Sequence. This spell has no effect unless at least one Apprentice has more items on their table than the caster. Its Effect is “Chose one table, add DICEX items to that table.” X = the largest value in the Table column of the GNDT at the time this spell is cast.

If a majority of the votes on this proposal have the word MULTI, use the following instead:

The spell Appetizers has “TAPAS” as its Activation Sequence. This spell has no effect unless at least one Apprentice has more items on their table than the caster. Its Effect is “Chose one or more tables, add DICEX total items to those tables, distributed at the caster’s discretion.” X = the largest value in the Table column of the GNDT at the time this spell is cast.

A method for adding lots of food items to a table. Also, a variant to add it to multiple tables.

Part 1:
Add the following to the list of spells in the Ruleset:

The spell “Doppelganger” has “POTATO” as its Activation Seqauence.  Its effect is as follows: Does nothing if the casting Apprentice’s Partner has a Ward that is not Null.  Choose another Apprentice (other than the casting Apprentice’s Partner) (the “Source Apprentice”).  This spell causes the entire Workbench of the casting Apprentice’s Partner to be replaced with a copy of the Source Apprentice’s Workbench (including any “U” runes, notwithstanding any prohibition in the rule entitled “Unstable Runes”).

Part 2:
If there is a rule entitled “Unstable Runes”, then change the phrase in that rule that present reads: “Notwithstanding anything to the contrary in the ruleset” so that it reads “Notwithstanding anything to the contrary in the ruleset (but subject to the Doppelganger spell)”.

How did this happen?

If the Proposal titled “Table the Motion” failed, this Proposal does nothing.

Spellcasting is hungry work, so change the portion of Rule 2.5 Spellcasting that currently reads:

Any Apprentice whose Workbench contains a Rune Chain that has the same Value as a Spell’s Activation Sequence may Cast that Spell. Upon doing so, he must select one such Rune Chain, change the last Rune in that Rune Chain to a Damaged Rune, then perform the Spell’s Effect.

To read instead:

Any Apprentice whose Workbench contains a Rune Chain that has the same Value as a Spell’s Activation Sequence may Cast that Spell, provided he has Eaten some food that day. Upon doing so, he must select one such Rune Chain, change the last Rune in that Rune Chain to a Damaged Rune, then perform the Spell’s Effect.

“Eat” is used in the sense described in Rule 2.9 Table the Motion.

Yes, this means that there may be instances where an Apprentice cannot cast all the spells they wish to because his Partner has eaten too much food that day, or because some other Game Effect has limited the amount of available food on his table.

Timed Action: Workbench Manipulation

As my first timed action (And first action in this game, so I don’t know if this is the right place to do it or not.) I am manipulation my workbench, by adding a O to the start of my workbench and removing an X from the end.

Sadly simple technical question.

I SHOULD probably know this, but is there any reason as to why my computer does not want to display the javascript function which makes the idle and unregistered idle players collapse? It works o most computers, but this one just doesn’t seem to “like” it. Am I missing a program I need installed?

The Dice Man

I’m having a little bit of trouble understanding the mechanics of using the random DICE feature. Is there a FAQ or tutorial somewhere? I want to incorporate a random aspect to a spell. Thanks.

Proposal: Table the Motion

Enacted, 8-0. Josh

Adminned at 29 Nov 2009 02:09:23 UTC

Add a new Rule to the Ruleset.  Call it “Tables and Food” and give it the following text:

As referenced in Rule 2.8 The Buddy System, each set of Partners shares a table. This is represented by the Table column of the GNDT.

The table column records the number of Food Items on a given Apprentice’s table. A table initially has a number of items equal to the length of the longer Workbench of any Apprentices sharing the table.

Food may be Eaten or Served, resulting in the reduction or addition of food items on a table.

As a daily action, but not more than once in 8 hours, an Apprentice may Eat one item of food from their own table, provided that this would not result in an empty table.

As a daily action, but not more than once in 8 hours, an Apprentice may Serve one item of food to any table.

Should any situation result in two Partners having an unequal table, such as from a Partner swap, the value shall default to the larger table status.

Should any situation result in an Apprentice not having a valid table, re-initialize the table.

If any player does not have a Partner, they initially get a table to themselves.

I have some other ideas for Food, but I’ve purposely left this fairly open ended.

Call for Judgment: Buddy issues

Fails, as it has no effect on ruleset or gamestate. See comments for a better way to handle such a situation.—Wakukee

Proposal: Waiter, there’s a self-kill in my SOUP

Times out with 5 for and 3 against.—Wakukee

Adminned at 26 Nov 2009 15:47:06 UTC

Add the following to the end of Rule 2.5.1 “Basic Spells”:

The spell Melting Pot has “SOUP” as its Activation Sequence. Its Effect is “Choose two Apprentices. They Become Partners.”

Fail any pending proposals, other than this one, which would create a Spell with “SOUP” as an Activation Sequence.

Phew… added the clause at the bottom so that if this passes, NOI’s next proposal will autofail.

Proposal: Please don’t hate me, I’m new

Timed out and failed, six to two. Josh

Adminned at 25 Nov 2009 07:26:14 UTC

Amend section 2.5.1 “Basic Spells” to include the following text at the bottom:

The spell Melting Pot has “SOUP” as its Activation Sequence. Its Effect is “Choose two Target Apprentices. Targets shall have the values of their partner columns swapped. Targets’ former partners shall also have the values in THEIR partner columns swapped, so as to reflect the new partner pairs. These value changes have the effect of changing Partners. This spell shall not affect the partner status of the Artisan. This spell shall not make any Apprentice their own partner. This spell may leave one or more Apprentices without a partner.”

OK, let’s try this again. Provides for a method for changing partners. The unstable rune means that this shouldn’t be over-used. Incorporating Darth’s suggestion to allow for changing your own partner.

As an example:

Currently Hix and Darknight are partners, as are Wakukee and OddRon.

If he had the proper runes, Josh could cast Melting Pot with Hix and Wakukee as Targets. The result would be Hix partnered with OddRon and Wakukee partnered with Darknight.

Josh could not select Bucky or NoOneImportant as Targets, as that would change the status of the Artisan.

Amend section 2.5.1 to include the following text at the bottom:

This spell may leave one or more Apprentices without a partner.” This is a Daily Action.

OK, let’s try this again. Provides for a method for changing partners. The unstable rune as well as Daily Action status means that this shouldn’t be over-used. The fact that the Caster cannot affect their own partner status makes this, in my opinion, slightly more strategic.

Josh could not select himself, Qwazukee, Bucky, or NoOneImportant as Targets, as that would either change his OWN partner status or the status of the Artisan.

Amend section 2.5.1 to include the following text at the bottom:

The spell Melting Pot has “SOUP” as its Activation Sequence. Its Effect is “Choose a Target Apprentice who currently has a partner. Change the the Original Value in the Partner column of Target Apprentice to any other valid Replacement Apprentice. Replacement Apprentice shall have their partner column updated accordingly. The Jilted Apprentice shall be the Apprentice who was previously partners with the Target Apprentice. The Jilted Apprentice shall have their Partner column updated to reflect the value that the Replacement Apprentice had immediately prior to the casting of this spell.  This spell shall not effect the partner status of the Caster or the Artisan. This spell shall not make any Apprentice their own partner.” This is a Daily Action.

Now that we’ve got partners, how about a way to mix things up? The unstable rune makes it so that it’s unlikely for this to happen very often. I hope I’ve done the formatting correctly.

Proposal: Learning in Pairs

Timed out and passed. josh

Adminned at 24 Nov 2009 03:44:36 UTC

Add a new Rule to the Ruleset.  Call it “The Buddy System” and give it the following text:

Each Apprentice, with the possible exception of the Artisan, shares a table with one other Apprentice.  This is tracked in the Partner column of the GNDT.

If at any time a non-Artisan Apprentice would not have another Apprentice as their Partner, that Apprentice’s Partner becomes the Artisan (if the Artisan doesn’t have a Partner) or the Artisan’s Partner (if the Artisan does have a Partner).  In the latter case, the Artisan ceases to have a Partner.  Either way, that Apprentice’s new Partner’s Partner becomes that Apprentice.

Whenever a Rule causes two different Apprentices to “Become Partners”, each of those two Apprentice’s Partner statistics is set to the other.  Then those Apprentice’s former Partners’ Partner statistics are set to each other.

For each Apprentice in an even-numbered position in the GNDT, set their Partner to the Apprentice below them in the GNDT if possible.  For each Apprentice in an odd-numbered position in the GNDT, set their Partner to the Apprentice above them in the GNDT if possible.  If any Apprentice doesn’t have a Partner afterwards, set their Partner to the Artisan and the Artisan’s Partner to them.

Proposal: Elder FUÞARK

Times out and fails, 3-5. -Bucky

Adminned at 21 Nov 2009 15:43:43 UTC

Amend Rule 2.2 Runes so that it reads:

There exist objects called Runes, each represented by a single letter that is the Rune’s Value. A sequence of Runes has a Value that is the sequence of letters corresponding to the Values of its component Runes. A Rune or sequence of Rune may be referred to by its Value.

A Rune Chain is a sequence of consecutive Runes.

Runes are subdivided into Consonants, Vowels and non-Vowel non-Consonant Damaged Runes: The legal Values for Consonants are ‘P’, ‘R’, ‘S’, ‘T’, ‘F’, ‘Þ’, and ‘K’. The legal Values for Vowels are ‘A’, ‘O’ and ‘U’. The only legal Value for Damaged Runes is ‘X’.

“No Rune can have a value other than ‘P’, ‘R’, ‘S’, ‘T’, ‘A’, ‘O’, ‘X’, ‘U’, ‘F’, ‘Þ’, or ‘K’.”

Add the following to the end of Rule 2.4 Unstable Runes:

The Consonant ‘F’ is considered Unstable. If any Apprentice has the consecutive subsequence “STAR” in his Workbench, as a daily action (and so long as that Apprentice does not take any other daily action during that Day that involves making changes to his own Workbench), that Apprentice may substitute “FFFF” for the “STAR” consecutive subsequence in his workbench. Notwithstanding anything to the contrary in the ruleset, an Apprentice may only voluntarily obtain instances of the Consonant ‘F’ to his workbench by operation of the previous sentence. This action is known as F-Transmutation and is considered a type of Transmutation for the purposes of the rules.

The Consonant ‘Þ’ is considered Unstable, and my also be represented by ‘Th’. If any Apprentice has the consecutive subsequence “FORK” in his Workbench, as a daily action (and so long as that Apprentice does not take any other daily action during that Day that involves making changes to his own Workbench), that Apprentice may substitute “ÞÞÞÞ” for the “FORK” consecutive subsequence in his workbench. Notwithstanding anything to the contrary in the ruleset, an Apprentice may only voluntarily obtain instances of the Consonant ‘Þ’ to his workbench by operation of the previous sentence. This action is known as Th-Transmutation and is considered a type of Transmutation for the purposes of the rules.

The Consonant ‘K’ is considered Unstable. If any Apprentice has the consecutive subsequence “FAST” in his Workbench, as a daily action (and so long as that Apprentice does not take any other daily action during that Day that involves making changes to his own Workbench), that Apprentice may substitute “KKKK” for the “FAST” consecutive subsequence in his workbench. Notwithstanding anything to the contrary in the ruleset, an Apprentice may only voluntarily obtain instances of the Consonant ‘K’ to his workbench by operation of the previous sentence. This action is known as K-Transmutation and is considered a type of Transmutation for the purposes of the rules.

Add a new subrule to Rule 2.5, called “Victory Spell”:

The Victory Spell has “FUÞARK” as its Activation Sequence. Its effect is “You achieve victory.”

I’ve gotten enough support that I’m willing to actually propose this.

Spell: Animation
Activation sequence: “PUPA”
Effect.  Creates a non-Apprentice entity, called a “Golem” which shall be added to the GNDT order in such ordered position as the Apprentice who casts it (such Apprentice, the “Master”) directs.  The Golem shall be named %(G) (with “%” being substituted with the name, or an abbreviation of the name, of its Master.  A Golem has the Ward that its Master had at the moment of the Golem’s creation, and has an initial Workbench consisting of a single “X” rune.  Any action or effect that would result in changing a Golem’s Workbench instead destroys the Golem.

Golems can serve as additional protection against Spells that affect other Apprentices based on their position in the GNDT.  If the Master does not admin his own creation of a Golem, he should post a story post that describes where the Golem should be placed in the GNDT.

Admins post (simplified) a: Needed changes.

1. We need to change the admin permissions so that admins can delete accounts. Currently we have NOT resolved the issue I found with the Captcha accepting the correct word for any image rather than just the one that appears, so we are under attack by spam accounts. Admins need to be able to delete these accounts. There is currently a way for admins to do this ANYWAY, but it is needlessley complicated and, I believe, due to an error in EE. It is simplest just to give admins the ability to delete accounts,

2. Media wiki update. Did we ever get that done? We should.

3. Admins should be able to edit comments. It is technically illegal, but sometimes needed; for spam and profanity.  There is a way to due it, but it is only possible from certain screens, and most likely due to an error in EE. It is easiest just to allow it officially.

Add a New Dynastic rule to the Ruleset and call it “Circle of Protection” and have it read as follows:

Each Apprentice has a Circle of Protection surrounding their Workbench. This Circle of Protection must be activated by a Spell in reference to Rule 2.5. Each Circle has a corresponding Spell, in which no two Spells can have the same Rune Sequence, each with unique Effects. As a weekly action, each Apprentice may activate a Circle of Protection by casting it’s corresponding Rune Sequence. In addition, each Apprentice may only have one Circle active. Once an Apprentice activates his or her Circle, that Circle lasts until the end of the week. After that week, Each Apprentice has a chance to activate a new Circle of Protection. There exists a column in the GNDT entitled “Circle” which tracks each Apprentice’s Circle.

I haven’t had time to actually think of Spells for activating your Circle. I’ll probably post another proposal with some Spells later today or tomorrow.

Proposal: Self-Defense

Passes 8-1 on a timed out quorum. Darknight (Woot finally get an admin job done)

Adminned at 11 Nov 2009 20:54:52 UTC

Add a new Dynastic Rule to the Ruleset.  Call it “Wards” and give it the following text:

Each Apprentice may have a single enchantment affecting their bench, tracked in the GNDT under the “Ward” column.  The legal values for a Ward are:

Null
Suppressive
Hardened
Trapped

An Apprentice’s Ward defaults to Null.

An Apprentice with a Suppressive Ward cannot Cast or be affected by any Spells.  Whenever their Workbench is Manipulated, their Ward becomes Null.

An Apprentice with a Hardened Ward cannot Cast or be affected by any Spells.  Whenever their Workbench is Manipulated, their Ward becomes Suppressive.

If an Apprentice with a Trapped Ward has their Workbench changed by another Apprentice, their Ward becomes Null and that other Apprentice has the first Rune in their Workbench changed to ‘X’.

Append the following text to the to the Rule entitled “Basic Spells” if it exists:

The Spell “Panic” has “SOS” as its Activation Sequence.  Its Effect is “Your Ward becomes Suppressive unless it is already Hardened.”

The Spell “Booby Trap” has “TRAP” as its Activation Sequence.  Its Effect is “Your ward becomes Trapped.”

Set each Apprentice’s Ward to “None”.  Set the Artisan’s Ward to “Trapped”.

Add the following to rule 1.8, “Dynasties”:

The Artisan may resign, provided he finds another Apprentice to become a new Artisan. The Artisan must then make a post to the blog, stating his resignation, and the name of the new Artisan, who becomes Artisan at the moment the post was created.

Based on a stolen rule from last dynasty.

There is a spell with an activation of POTROAST. If anyone casts this spell, then a Potroast is held.

Proposal: The Grind

Adminned at 11 Nov 2009 06:40:20 UTC

Add a new item to the list of permitted actions in rule 2.3:

* Grind a spell into a powder as per the relevant rule below.

Add the following rule to the ruleset, entitled Powder:

Powders are Rune Chains that have been ground down into a dust. They are tracked in the GNDT under Powders.

Any Apprentice whose Workbench contains a Rune Chain that has the same Value as a Spell’s Activation Sequence may, provided that they have not Cast that Spell within the preceeding 24 hours, grind that spell into a Powder. Doing so changes all of the runes in the Rune Chain into Xs but allows the Apprentice to add a Powder with that Rune Chain to the relevent column in the GNDT.

A Powder can be used at any time to Cast the spell whose Activation Sequence it spells out. Using the Powder in this way destroys the Powder. An Apprentice may have no more than 4 Powders at a time; if they complete and action that would give them more than this number then they must discard Powders until they are within this restriction.

The Rune Chain of a Powder may not be changed or amended under any circumstances.

Add a new column to the GNDT, entitled “Powder”.

Proposal: Rust Treatment

Fails 4-3. yuri_dragon_17

Adminned at 10 Nov 2009 20:15:37 UTC

Part 1:
In the rule “Runes”, amend the sentence that read: “The only legal Value for Damaged Runes is ‘X’.” so that it reads “The only legal Values for Damaged Runes are “X” and “Q”.
Add “Q” to the list of runes in the sentence in that rule that begins “No Rune can have a Value other than…”

Part 2: If there is a subrule to the rule entitled “Spellcasting” that lists Spells, add the following to that subrule:
Contaminate has “RUST” as its activation sequence.  Its Effect is Choose two different Apprentices.  With respect to the Workbench of each of these Apprentices, choose any one of three rightmost Runes in such Workbench and replace it with a ‘Q’.”

Part 3:  Add a new rule entitled “Contamination”, as follows:

The ‘Q’ Damaged Rune is generally regarded as an undesirable contaminant.  An Apprentice who has at least one ‘Q’ in his Workbench is regarded as Contaminated.  If at least two Days have elapsed since any ‘Q’s have been added to a given Apprentice’s Workbench by any means (and that Apprentice is still Contaminated), [and if the Contaminated Apprentice has a Time of at least 2], then any Player may replace any Rune in that Contaminated Apprentice’s Workbench that is adjacent to a ‘Q’ with a ‘Q’.

Part 4: If the proposal “Less Grinding, More Carving” fails, then delete the bracketed text in part 3 and replace the text “If at least two Days” in part 3 with “If at least three Days”.

Add a new subrule to the rule entitled “Spellcasting”.  Call it “Basic Spells” and give it the following text:

The following spells exist, as per this Rule’s superrule.

Rune Swap has “OPT” as its activation sequence.  Its Effect is “Exchange the positions of two Runes in your Workbench”.

Cleanse has “SOAP” as its activation sequence.  Its Effect is “Choose an Apprentice.  Move all Damaged Runes in that Apprentice’s Workbench to the end of their Workbench, leaving the relative order of the other Runes unchanged.

Reverse Manipulation has “POP” and “POPS” as its activation sequences.  Its Effect is “Remove the first Rune from your Workbench, then add any Consonant to the end of your Workbench.”

Here are some nice, safe Rune-transferring spells to cut your teeth on.  Just keep your hands clear of the workbench while the runes are active.

On adminship.

This post is currently here to remind me to fill it out. I had some serious reflections on things we need to do with certain admin permissions and teaching admins more effectively, but about half an hour’s work typing was erased as I was making some finishing touches thanks to pressing backspace and going back a page rather than deleting a character. : |. I’ll fill it back out in a simplified form in a day or two. Don’t have time now.

Add the following sentences to Spellcasting:

Each spell has a difficulty level. Apprentices may not cast spells with Difficulty higher than their Intelligence, a stat which is tracked in the GNDT, and which has a default value of 5.
All spells are to be listed in the following format:

Name:
Difficulty:
Activation Sequence(s):
Effect(s):

Add a subrule to “Spellcasting” and call it “Basic Spells”:

Name: Lesser Sort
Difficulty: 5
Activation Sequence(s): SORT
Effect(s): The Apprentice may change the order of their workbench to either alphabetical or reverse-alphabetical order, leaving X runes in their place.

Name: Sap
Difficulty: 5
Activation Sequence(s): SAP
Effect(s): The Apprentice may change all of their X runes to the value of any single other rune that is in the workbench of another Apprentice. Then they transform all of the other Apprentice’s runes that share that value to X.

Name: Pot Roast
Difficulty: 1
Activation Sequence(s): POTROAST
Effect(s): The Apprentice may create a Pot Roast in their possession.

Set all Apprentices’ Intelligence values to the initial.

Proposal: Less grinding, more carving

Add a new Dynastic Rule to the Ruleset.  Call “Pacing” and give it the following text:

Each Apprentice has a numerical “Time” statistic tracked in the GNDT.  New Apprentices have 0 Time.  As a weekly action, each Apprentice may set their Time to 7.

If a game action is a Timed Action, each Apprentice may spend one Time in order to take that action.  Each Apprentice may perform no more than two Timed Actions in any 24-hour period.

In the Rule entitled “Workbench”, replace the text

As a daily action

with

As a Timed Action

The main idea here is that you can get all your Manipulations in each week even if you don’t log in every day.  The limit of 2 actions per day gives others a reasonable chance to react.

Part 1:
In the rule “Runes”, if there is a sentence that reads: “No Rune can have a value other than ‘P’, ‘R’, ‘S’, ‘T’, ‘A’, ‘O’ or ‘X’.”
amend it so that it reads:
“No Rune can have a value other than ‘P’, ‘R’, ‘S’, ‘T’, ‘A’, ‘O’, ‘X’ or ‘U’.”

Part 2:
At the end of the rule “Workbench”, add a new bullet point reading:

* Engage in Transmutation, to the extent permitted under the rule “Unstable Runes”.

Part 3:
In the rule “Unstable Runes”, change the phrase “If any Apprentice has the sequence” to “If any Apprentice has the consecutive subsequence”; change the phrase “for the “AAOO” or “AOOA” sequence” to “for the “AAOO” or “AOOA” consecutive subsequence”

In the Rule entitled “Runes”, change the text

A Rune may be referred to by its Value.  A sequence of Runes may be referred to by the sequence of letters corresponding to the Values of its component Runes.

to

A sequence of Runes has a Value that is the sequence of letters corresponding to the Values of its component Runes. A Rune or sequence of Rune may be referred to by its Value.

A Rune Chain is a sequence of consecutive Runes.

Add a new Rule to the Ruleset.  Call it “Spellcasting” and give it the following text:

There are a number of Spells, listed in this Rule and its subrules.  Each Spell has one or more Activation Sequences, each of which is a Rune sequence containing one or more Vowels and no Damaged Runes.  Each Spell also has an Effect.

No two Spells may have the same Activation Sequence.  A spell cannot be Cast if its Effect could not be performed.

Proposal: Magical Framework Part I

Adminned at 08 Nov 2009 11:42:02 UTC

In rule “Workbench”, after the sentence “As a daily action, an Apprentice may Manipulate their Workbench.” add the following text:

Each of those actions has a Verb that represents it (listed as the first word in it’s description), and which may be used instead of the full text of the action.

Then replace the list of actions on that rule with the following list:

Etch: Add any Vowel or Consonant to the start of the Workbench, then remove the last Rune of the Workbench
Turn: Swap the first and last Runes of the Workbench
Fuse: Remove any Rune from the Workbench then add a Damaged Rune at the end or start

Proposal: Get to know your neighbour

Self-killed. Josh

Adminned at 07 Nov 2009 13:50:14 UTC

Add the following rule to the ruleset, entitled Meta Magic:

Spells can be cast vertically as well as horizontally. If the GNDT workbench records for several consecutively-listed Apprentices, when read vertically from top to bottom using runes in the same workbench position, forms a configuration that would - if it were found horizontally in a single Apprentice’s workbench - have an effect as defined elsewhere in the ruleset, then it forms a meta-magical structure.

Any Apprentice whose workbench contains a rune that is part of a meta-magical structure may apply the effect (which will be the same as the horizontal equivalent of that rune combination) of that structure on all of the players whose runes form a part of that meta-magical structure, including themselves. This effect may not be invoked for a meta-magical structure any more often than its horizontal equivalent.

“Consecutive” questionnaire

All rune sequences that we deal with this Dynasty are likely to be finite in length, so I think we can agree that it will be unnecessary to ever specify “finite sequence” from here on.  We will, however, be needing to refer to one sequence being “inside” another, and the simplest way of doing this is to borrow the terminology of “subsequence”.  A sequence is just a set (that’s allowed to have repeating runes) that has an order.  So a subsequence just means any subset that has the same relative order.

Original sequence:  PROSTAXUP

Example subsequences:  PUP, ROT, PROSTAXUP, TAX, PP

Not subsequences:  ROAST (the A is out of order), SS (there aren’t 2 copies of S in the original sequence), SORP (it appears backwards in the original, but that doesn’t count)

This notion of subsequence does not inherently carry any assumption that the subsequence appears _consecutively_ in the original sequence, but it’s simple enough to just say “consecutive subsequence” if that’s what you mean.  If that’s too cumbersome, I suggest defining “subword” or similar to mean just that.

I think it’s perfectly fine to have a mixture of consecutive and not-necessarily-consecutive requirements for various things.  Consecutive requirements can lead to more powerful effects, for example, since they’re harder to assemble.  Non-consecutive requirements could also be interesting, since a clever player might be able to have several options available at once, without committing to any of them.

For now, I’m just wondering what people have been assuming when they write proposals (or vote on proposals), so I can make a reasonable proposal with definitions, and which doesn’t mess up anyone’s intent.  In particular:

*Kevan’s amulets proposal specifies a group from “either the start or the end” and “in the same order”, so it’s clear what e intended.
*My SAP and SORT rule looks for not-necessarily-consecutive runes, but the effect of SAP is not very powerful, and SORT is only somewhat powerful and requires 4 out of 5 workbench slots to pull off (which probably makes you an appealing SAP target).  But I don’t mind changing it if there are a bunch of you who assumed I meant consecutive, and would have voted AGAINST had you known.
*Bucky has a spellcasting draft that just says “subsequence”, which I think is good, and leaves the door open for some spells (maybe even a majority) that specifically require consecutive subsequences.
*spikebrennan has told me that he meant only for consecutive “AAOO” or “AOOA” to be able to change into “UUUU” in eir unstable runes proposal.

Proposal: Clarifying “Sequence”

Self-killed. Josh

Adminned at 07 Nov 2009 13:49:02 UTC

Part 1:
Add a rule entitled “Definitions”, as follows:

The term “Sequence” means an expressly-designated series of one or more consecutive Runes from left to right, without intervening Runes.  For example, given a Workbench that consists of the Runes “PRSTAX” (from left to right), the Sequences “S”, “PRS”, “RSTAX” and “TA” exist in that Workbench, but the Sequence “PST” does not (due to the intervening ‘R’), nor does the Sequence “ATSR” (since the Runes are not in the Workbench in that order from left to right).

Part 2: Wherever the term “subsequence” appears in the Ruleset, change it to “Sequence”.

Hmmm…

When’s the last time we had a non-grindy dynasty? I’d like to look at its final ruleset for ideas.

Proposal: The Philosopher’s Stone

If there is a rule entitled “Runes” that contains the sentence “The legal Values for Vowels are ‘A’ and ‘O’.”, then change that sentence so that it reads:

“The legal values for Vowels are ‘A’, ‘O’ and ‘U’”.

Add a Rule entitled “Unstable Runes”, as follows:

The Vowel ‘U’ is a special magical element, not found in nature and only obtainable through the artificial process of transmutation.  If any Apprentice has the sequence “AAOO” or “AOOA” in his Workbench, then as a Daily action (and so long as that Apprentice does not take any other daily action during that Day that involves making changes to his own Workbench), that Apprentice may substitute “UUUU” for the “AAOO” or “AOOA” sequence in his workbench.  Notwithstanding anything to the contrary in the ruleset, an Apprentice may only voluntarily obtain instances of the Vowel ‘U’ to his workbench by operation of the previous sentence.

The vowel ‘U’ has a short half-life.  If an Apprentice (the “U-bearer”) has one or more ‘U’ runes in his Workbench then any Apprentice may change the rightmost ‘U’ in the U-bearer’s Workbench to ‘X’ (this process is called “U-Decay”), so long as the Apprentice making that change makes a comment to the GNDT expressly indicating that he has done so, whereupon a minimum of three (3) Days must elapse before the U-bearer’s Workbench may again be subjected to U-Decay.

If a rule called “Workbench” exists, create a new sub-rule under it called “Mastery”:

Whenever an Apprentice “Steps Forward”, that Apprentice removes a single rune of their choice from their Workbench, then adds two damaged Runes at the end of their Workbench (this causes the number of runes on their Workbench to increase by one). An Apprentice can only Step Forward when explicitly allowed by the Rules, and never more than once a day.

For each three EVCs on this Proposal that contain the words “Show us the Way” add one Damaged Rune at the end of the Artisan’s Workbench.

Proposal draft: Spellcasting

Add a new Rule to the Ruleset.  Call it “Spellcasting” and give it the following text:

There are a number of Spells, listed in this Rule’s subrules.  Each Spell has one or more Activation Sequences, each of which is a Rune sequence containing one or more Vowels and no Damaged Runes.  Each Spell also has an Effect.

Any Apprentice whose Workbench contains a Spell’s Activation Sequence may Cast that Spell.  Upon doing so, he must select a subsequence of his Workbench with a Value that is the Activation Sequence, change the last Rune in the selected subsequence to a Damaged Rune, then perform the Spell’s Effect.

No two Spells may have the same Activation Sequence.  A spell cannot be Cast if its Effect cannot be performed.

Since this is likely the most important proposal of the dynasty, I’d like feedback on it before I propose it.

The Spells will probably all be listed in the same subrule.

Sup?

Can I be unidled please?

Well that was weird.

Apologies for the extreme delay in fixing the problems here; I didn’t see the e-mail about the problem until 5:00 pm Central, and wasn’t home to fix it until 9:30 pm Central.

In its template preferences, ExpressionEngine lets you save its templates as text files on your server if you desire. Back when I was building blognomic.com I certainly did desire, so most of them were set to save as files. But all templates, including ones saved as files, are stored in the database as well.

Apparently the Index file somehow got out of sync with the database; the file was empty, even though the Templates tab in the admin showed perfectly good content. I pasted the database’s template into the file, and it worked.

I’ve disabled the sync-to-file option on all templates, so I hope this problem doesn’t rear its head anymore. I’m very sorry for the extended outage.

Proposal: Spell Chains

Fails 5-5. yuri_dragon_17

Adminned at 06 Nov 2009 15:34:33 UTC

If (and only if) there exist Dynastic Rules called “Runes” and “Workbench”:

Create a Dynastic Rule called “Spell Chains” with no text.

Create a subrule to “Spell Chains” called “SAP” with text

If an Apprentice’s Workbench contains “SAP” as a subsequence, he may choose a single non-Damaged rune (the target rune) appearing in the Workbench of another Apprentice, then simultaneously replace a single occurrence of “SAP” in his own Workbench with 3 occurrences of the target rune, and replace the target rune with the Damaged Rune “X”.

.

Create a subrule to “Spell Chains” called “SORT” with text

If an Apprentice’s Workbench contains “SORT” as a subsequence, he may rearrange the ordering of the Runes in a single Apprentice’s Workbench so that the non-Damaged Runes are in alphabetical order from left to right, while keeping the positions of any Damaged Runes the same (The sequence “XXASXOOXTOX” would become “XXAOXOOXSTX”, for example).  After doing this, if the Apprentice’s Workbench still contains “SORT” as a subsequence, he must immediately choose and replace each of 2 runes in a single occurrence of “SORT” in his own Workbench with the Damaged Rune “X”.

If “Get your runes in a line (take 2)” failed, this proposal has no effect.

Add a new Dynastic rule, called “Amulets”:-

An Amulet is a block of wood carved with between one and three Runes. Each Apprentice may carry a number of Amulets in their inventory, tracked in the GNDT under the column “Amulets” - each Amulet is represented by a string of Runes, and they are separated by spaces.

As a daily action, an Apprentice may Carve an Amulet, by removing a group of up to three Runes from either the start or end of their Workbench. If none of these Runes are “X”, the Apprentice may add one Amulet made from those same Runes, in the same order, to their inventory.

Add a new bullet to the list of “manipulating the workbench” actions:-

Cut a fresh piece of wood; this replaces the Runes of their workbench with “XXXXX”.

Add a new Dynastic Rule to the Ruleset.  Call it “Runes” and give it the following text:

There exist objects called Runes, each represented by a single letter that is the Rune’s Value.  A Rune may be referred to by its Value.  A sequence of Runes may be referred to by the sequence of letters corresponding to the Values of its component Runes.

Runes are subdivided into Consonants, Vowels and non-Vowel non-Consonant Damaged Runes:
The legal Values for Consonants are ‘P’, ‘R’, ‘S’ and ‘T’.
The legal Values for Vowels are ‘A’ and ‘O’.
The only legal Value for Damaged Runes is ‘X’.

No Rune can have a value other than ‘P’, ‘R’, ‘S’, ‘T’, ‘A’, ‘O’ or ‘X’.

Add another new Dynastic Rule to the Ruleset.  Call it “Workbench” and give it the following text:

Each Apprentice has a single sequence of Runes tracked in the GNDT under the column “Workbench”.  An Apprentice’s Workbench is initially “XXXXX”.

As a daily action, an Apprentice may Manipulate their Workbench.  Manipulating a Workbench is defined as taking one action from the following list:
*Add any Vowel or Consonant to the start of the Workbench and then remove the last Rune of the Workbench
*Swap the first and last Runes of the Workbench

Set each Apprentice’s Workbench to its initial value.  Set the Artisan’s Workbench to “PROSTAX”

Enact a new subrule to Rule 2.8 (Teams), called “Team Merger”:-

As a weekly action, a Player may propose a Team Merger by posting a blog entry with a subject “Team Merger: A into B”, where “A” is the Team of the Player, and “B” is a Team which has more members than the Player’s Team. Members of each team may comment on this blog entry using voting icons. As soon as every member of Team A and at least one member of Team B has left a FOR voting icon on the post, all members of Team A are moved to Team B. Each player moved in this way is awarded 10 points.

Once the members have been moved, or if the Team Merger post has existed for more than 48 hours, the Team Merger ends, and further comments may not be added to it.

Story Post: Subgame: Noticings

The winner of this subgame will be the player of the subgame who has the highest “points over the last 7 days” score in the Flickr game Noticings, at 5pm GMT on Friday the 6th of November 2009. A player must link to their Flickr account when they join the subgame. Players who join the subgame after 12pm Wednesday or fail to specify their Flickr account within 24 hours of joining are not eligible to win. If a photo breaks the rules given at noticin.gs/rules, its score shall be deducted from that player’s Noticings score before determining a winner.

To play the game, you’ll need a Flickr account. (Kevan is already playing, but has no points yet this week.)

This Subgame has a stake of five points.

Proposal: Rotten Boroughs

Can’t enact with seven votes against. Failed by Kevan. -2 to Spike.

Adminned at 03 Nov 2009 05:31:01 UTC

Add a new dynastic rule called “Old Sarum”, as follows:

A proposal is subject to Team Voting if any of the following is true with respect to that proposal:
- the text of the proposal unambiguously states that the proposal shall be subject to Team Voting; or
- the proposal would not directly change the ruleset.
(Note that Declarations of Victory and Calls for Judgment are not proposals and, as such, are never subject to Team Voting).
A “Team Vote” of a given team with respect to a proposal that is subject to Team Voting is: (A)  “FOR” if a majority of the members of that team who cast votes on that proposal included “FOR” votes in their EVC for that proposal; and (B) “AGAINST” if a majority of the members of that team who cast votes on that proposal included “AGAINST” votes in their EVC for that proposal; and (C) an abstention, if the number of “FOR” votes and “AGAINST” votes cast by team members in their respective EVCs are evenly divided, or if no members of that team cast votes on that proposal.

If a proposal is subject to Team Voting, then notwithstanding the normal voting rules that relate the enactment or failing of proposals, the proposal shall be enacted if there are more Team Votes “FOR” the proposal than Team Votes “AGAINST” the proposal; and failed otherwise.

The enactment or failure of proposals (as opposed to the operation of the proposal itself in accordance with the proposal’s terms) that are subject to Team Voting shall not, in and of itself, result in points being awarded or taken away, anything to the contrary in the Ruleset notwithstanding.

Idle

Wakukee goes idle.

In the Rule entitled “Elections (red)”, change the text

to

shall achieve victory. This rule shall be updated on ascension to reflect the new Leader.

Proposal: Half-Price Veto [Trivial]

Self-killed, failed by Kevan. -2 to Kevan.

Add “[Sponsored by Kevan]” to the title of Rule 2.10.1 (Bought Veto).

In Rule 2.4.2, replace “Those rules are known as sponsored rules.” with “Rules with such text are known as sponsored rules.”

Get them while they’re hot. (The second sentence is just to clarify that renaming a rule will still make it a valid Sponsored Rule.)

Proposal: Since I did an ais523 on the last one

Can’t pass with 7 votes against. Failed by Kevan. -2 to Yuri.

Create a new rule, “Victory [251 points]”:

As a weekly action, any player may declare victory.

Proposal: Leveling the playing field

Can’t pass with six votes against. Failed by Kevan. -2 to Darth.

Add a new subrule to Rule 2.8 “Teams (Indigo)”, titled “Even Teams [2 Points]”:

If, at any time, a Team (called the Army) contains at least a Quorum of Players, any Player (called the Switcher) may change the team of any Player (called the Immigrant) in the Army to any other Team.

If at least half of the EVCs on this Proposal contain the text “colorless” and/or “colourless”, the new rule does not become a team rule.

There are lots of tiny teams, and one big one. It should be evened out a bit.

How to Win

Create a new rule, “Victory [250 points]”:

As a weekly action, any player may declare victory.
