Proposal: Ruling the Waves

Reached quorum 7 votes to 0. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 02 Jun 2022 08:47:57 UTC

Enact a new rule, “The Fall of Atlantis”:-

If all Buildings that exist are Flooded, or if no Buildings exist, then no further dynastic actions may be taken by Guardians, and the Guardian with the highest Foresight has achieved victory. (If tied, the tied Guardian with the most Money has achieved victory; if still tied, the tied Guardian with the most Piety has achieved victory.)

We’re two weeks in, perhaps time to consider a victory condition?

Story Post: [Ouster] The Agora

This Ouster is closed

Adminned at 02 Jun 2022 08:25:30 UTC

The tyranny of MadisonSilver has gone on too long; it is time for a change in political leadership in the Agora. Who’s with me?!

NB this is an Ouster; at time of posting only myself, Trigon, Trapdoorspyder and MadisonSilver may vote on it.

At the Pnyx

Of the eleven non-Emperor players of the game right now, seven have made no proposals since the dynasty started two weeks ago, two of those being longer-term players who unintentionally idled out having also neglected to cast any votes either. Two others have only made one proposal each. Why aren’t players - old and new - engaging with the Nomic rule amendment side of the game at the moment?

Have we fallen into the trap of having a dynasty feel enough like a boardgame that players assume it must be fair and balanced and that they can win that game on its own merits, irrespective of how its rules might be changed by themselves or their opponents? Or is something more fundamental happening here?

Proposal: Orderly Queue

Timed out / quorumed 7 votes to 0. Enacted by Kevan.

Move the line beginning “If a Guardian is the first Atlantean in the Queue” and the bulleted list immediately below it into a new subrule of “The Queue” titled “Declaring”.

Move the line beginning “If the Oracle is the first Atlantean in the Queue” and the bulleted list immediately below it into a new subrule of “The Queue” titled “Auguring”.

Move the line beginning “Promenading is an atomic action ” and the bulleted list immediately below it into a new subrule of “The Queue” titled “Promenading”.

Proposal: Bad Moon Rising

Timed out 3 votes to 1. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 01 Jun 2022 13:35:39 UTC

In the atomic action Auguring, rewrite the second bullet point to read as follows:

If the Oracle has not received a Prayer since the last time an Auguring action was carried out, skip this step. Otherwise, secretly randomly select a Prayer they they have received since the last time an Auguring action was carried out, with the probability of each Prayer being selected being weighted by its submitter’s Foresight score, and then apply its Fate to its District.

Call for Judgment: Ostracon

Reached quorum 7 votes to 0. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 30 May 2022 18:14:42 UTC

Enact a new rule, “In Exile”:-

When a Guardian goes idle, all of their Buildings become Uninhabited.

The Guardian named Trigon may take the action of Reclaiming if they have not already done so this dynasty. Upon doing so they may set an Unoccupied Temple in the Gates, an Unoccupied Temple in the Agora and an Unoccupied House in the Agora to their own ownership.

Set the Buildings which were owned by Trigon immediately before they most recently went idle to be Uninhabited.

If SupernovaStarbright is idle, set the Buildings which were owned by SupernovaStarbright immediately before they most recently went idle to be Uninhabited. Then add the following to the “In Exile” rule:-

The Guardian named SupernovaStarbright may take the action of Reclaiming if they have not already done so this dynasty. Upon doing so they may set an Unoccupied Temple in the Gates to their own ownership.

A quick and temporary fix to unlock the game now that the issue we didn’t manage to address last week has happened again and a potential part of each player’s turn - the Promenading - cannot be performed again until it’s fixed. (I won’t just rush through a straight CfJ reproposal of No Man Has Blinded Me, since it failed, it’s Core, and it didn’t get Josh’s approval.)

Rising Tide

Trigon has become idle after 8 days without voting or posting; quorum becomes 6.

We have still not established what happens to their buildings, I think, and this may now make the Promenading action impossible, which might make Auguring impossible, which may softlock the game.

Proposal: High Tide

Reached quorum 7 votes to 0. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 31 May 2022 13:23:58 UTC

In the rule “Buildings”, after “Uninhabited (having no owner),” add:-

Flooded (also having no owner),

Change the effect of the Water Fate from “The effect of Water on a District is that a random Building in that District (if any are there) becomes a House.” to:-

* The effect of Water on a District is that (if there are Buildings there but none are Flooded) the Focused Building in that District becomes Flooded; if there is already a Flooded Building there, then instead all non-Flooded Buildings immediately before or after a Flooded Building in that District’s order of Buildings become Flooded. When a Support Building becomes Flooded as a result of a Water Fate, it is removed from the game.

Or if the proposal “The Gods Do Not Play Dice” failed, change it to:-

* The effect of Water on a District is that a random non-Flooded Building in that District (if any exist) becomes Flooded

In the Promenading action, add “non-Flooded” after each “For each”.

If any Buildings became Houses as a result of a Water Fate while this proposal was pending, return them to their previous Building type and make them Flooded.

Making the Water Fates more of an ongoing concern, as befits Atlantis: when they neutralise a building, this makes it more likely for the neighbouring ones to sink in the future.

Proposal: Revolting Is The Word

Timed out 5 votes to 1. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 31 May 2022 13:22:42 UTC

Add a new dynastic rule, called Political Turmoil:

As a weekly action, a Guardian may start an Ouster. An Ouster is an Event whose body must contain the name of a single District in which the posting Guardian owns a Building but is not the Baron. Responses to an Ouster take the form of valid votes, and may only come from Guardians who also own Buildings in the named District.

An Ouster may be ended after 24 hours have passed. When an Ouster is ended, the valid votes cast upon it are weighted according to the number of buildings their respective posters have in the named District of that Ouster; if the adjusted total of FOR votes is greater than the adjusted number of AGAINST votes then the Ouster is successful and the Guardian ending the event must remove the Deed for the named District from its erstwhile Baron; otherwise the Ouster is unsuccessful and the Ouster is closed with no further action taken.

Proposal: The Gods Do Not Play Dice

Timed out 5 votes to 0. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 30 May 2022 19:39:59 UTC

In the rule “Prophecy”, replace “which describes a District and a Fate” with “which describes a District, a Fate and a Focus number”.

In that rule, replace “a random Building in that District (if any are there)” with “the Focused Building in that District (if there are any Buildings there)”.

To that rule, add:-

The Focused Building of a District, for a given Prophecy, is found by counting left to right through the list of Buildings in that District, starting from the leftmost Building and looping back to it when counting on from the rightmost building, until the number counted equals the Prophecy’s Focus number.

In “The Queue”, replace “Selecting a secretly random District and secretly random Fate to become the new Prophecy” with:-

Selecting a secretly random District and a secretly random Fate to become the new Prophecy, having a Focus of a secretly random number from 1 to 20

Add a bullet point after “Selecting an Audient and privately informing them of the Prophecy’s Fate” in that rule, reading:-

Selecting an Audient and privately informing them of the Prophecy’s Focus number, in a message of the format “I see X birds in flight”, where X is the Focus number

To “Buildings”, add:-

The order of Buildings in a District is a publicly tracked list. When a new Building is added to a District, whoever adds it may place it anywhere within the list of that District’s Buildings.

The orders of the Buildings within Districts become whatever they are in the wiki page at the time of enactment.

Add a new dynastic rule, “Late Result”:-

At any time, the Oracle may set the Focus number of the current Prophecy to a random number from 1 to 20, then select an Audient and privately inform them of this number, in a message of the format “I see X birds in flight”, where X is the number, then repeal this rule.

Giving Prophecies predictable (and manipulable) pinpoint accuracy, rather than a purely random target.

Auguring: Fire in the Odeon

A wooden animal sculpture in the Odeon district bursts into flames during the night, burning the Trojan Embassy to the ground.

Proposal: The Fate of the Furious

Timed out and enacted, 3-0 with two unresolved DEFs. Josh

Adminned at 30 May 2022 09:18:27 UTC

Rewrite the second paragraph of the rule Buildings to read as follows:

There are several Building Types, in four classes: Temples, Shops, Farms and Houses are all types of Infrastructure Building; Embassies are the only type of Foreign Building; Towers, Levees, Barracks and Granaries are all types of Support Building; Steles and Ziggurats are both types of Ritual Building.

Add the following to the end of the rule Buildings:

Ritual Buildings may only be built in the Palace, Agora, Gates or Docks districts.

Add the following as a new fifth step in the Declaring atomic action:

Optionally carry out the Disastermancy atomic action, if possible.

Add the following as a new rule, called Disastermancy:

Each Guardian has a Foresight score, which is publicly tracked and which defaults to zero. A Guardian’s Foresight score may not be changed except as directed by the Disastermancy action.

A Guardian may carry out the Disastermancy atomic action as part of the Declaring action. Disastermancy is an atomic action with the following steps:

* Optionally spend either 1 Livestock to build a Stele or 1 Livestock and 5 Gold to build a Ziggurat;
* Calculate their current Foresight score, which is defined as zero, plus one for each Temple they own, plus two for each Stele they own, plus five for each Zigurrat they own, plus one for each Temple, Stele or Zigurrat in a District in which they are the Baron, and set their Foresight score to that value;
* Optionally send a single Prayer to the Oracle, which is a single message that contains one theoretically possible Prophecy.

Add the following as a second step to the Auguring atomic action:

* If the Oracle has not received a Prayer since the last time an Auguring action was carried out, skip this step. Otherwise, secretly randomly roll DICE2; if the result is 2 then the Prophecy is unchanged; otherwise, secretly randomly select a Prayer they they have received since the last time an Auguring action was carried out, with the probability of each Prayer being selected being weighted by its submitter’s Foresight score, and make the current Prophecy match the contents of the selected Prayer.

Proposal: Jump in the jam jar, gonna get straight

Cannot reach quorum with 6 AGAINST votes. Josh

Adminned at 28 May 2022 07:37:53 UTC

The important bit; if tl;dr, just read this section:

Add the following to the end of the rule Guardians:

If a Guardian has carried out an action that has resulted in them having tracked gamestate information in the current dynasty then they may be said to be present in the current dynasty. If a dynasty has gamestate information that is privately tracked then it is the responsibility of the Oracle to maintain a publicly tracked list of Guardians that are present in the current dynasty.

Repeal the rule Idle Guardians.

An enabling change on proposal resolution, also a bit important but if you’re already AGAINST then it won’t change your mind:

In the rule Votes, change “A Votable Matter is Popular if any of the following are true:” and all subsequent text in the rule to read:

A Votable Matter is Popular if it has been open for voting for at least 36 hours, it has more than 1 valid Vote cast on it, and more valid Votes cast on it are FOR than are AGAINST. A Votable Matter is Unpopular if it has been open for voting for at least 48 hours and it is not Popular.

In the rule Resolution of Proposals, remove the text “It has been open for voting for at least 12 hours.”

In the rule Victory and Ascension, add the following immediately after the first sentence of the second paragraph:

A Guardian’s Vote on a DoV is only Valid if that Guardian is present in the current dynasty.

In the same rule, change the terms under which a DoV can be enacted to read as follows:

* It has a number of FOR Votes greater than 2/3rds of the number of present Guardians, it has been open for at least 12 hours, and either the Oracle has Voted FOR it or it has no AGAINST Votes.
* It has a number of FOR Votes greater than 2/3rds of the number of present Guardians, and it has been open for at least 24 hours.

In the same rule, change “A Pending DoV may be Failed by any Admin if any of the following are true:” and the subsequent bulleted list to read:

A Pending DoV may be Failed by any Admin if after 24 hours it cannot otherwise be enacted.

Tiding up, few substantial changes:

In the rules Dormancy [Active], Imperial Deferentials [Active], Mantle Limitations [Inactive] [Rare], and Alliances [Inactive] [Rare], change any instance of the term “Guardian” to “present Guardian”, and “Guardians” to “present Guardians”. Add the following to the end of the rule Dynastic Tracking [Active]:

Unless otherwise stated, whenever a dynastic rule requires that information be publicly tracked for all Guardians, only information for present Guardians needs to be tracked.

In No Collaboration [Inactive] [Rare], change “Idle Guardians (or people who are not yet Guardians) also face the same restrictions if they intend to become an active Guardian during the course of the dynasty.” to:

Non-present Guardians face the same restrictions if they intend to become present during the course of the dynasty.

Then in every other sentence in that rule change “Guardian” to “present Guardian”, or “Guardians” to “present Guardians”.

In the Appendix, change “it is referring to a Quorum of all Guardians” to “it is referring to a Quorum of all present Guardians”.

In the rule Official Posts, change “A New Guardian is defined as a Guardian who has been a Guardian for fewer than seven days or a Guardian that has unidled in the past seven days after being idle for at least 3 months.” to read:

A New Guardian is defined as a Guardian who has been a Guardian for fewer than seven days or a Guardian that has become present in the past seven days after being not present for at least 6 months.

Remove the following from the rule Things that a mentor must do:

If possible, give their mentee a nudge if it appears that they are at risk of becoming Idle;
If they themselves go idle, communicate with their mentee to either continue to support them as an idle Guardian or arrange a handover to another mentor if requested.

Remove “Whenever an Atlantean is unidled, they are removed from the Queue and Path (if present in either) and then added to the end of the Path.” from the rule The Queue.

In another nomic we basically structured things such that you were a player if you did the things that a player did, and proposals were just resolved based on the votes cast on them, and it was remarkably freeing! There are pros and cons to this so I offer it up as a suggestion. The big pros I think are that it lets players who are not involved in the dynastic game have a say on core proposals, and that active-idlers become less of a drag on the game; the big cons are the lack of signposts around people entering or leaving the dynastic game, but I suspect that new ways of working would emerge around that.

Proposal: No Man Has Blinded Me [Appendix]

Timed out and cannot be enacted due to having a sub-quorum number of FOR views. Josh

Adminned at 27 May 2022 18:34:32 UTC

If the proposal “No Ghosts” enacted, this proposal has no further effect.

Add to the bulleted list in “Numbers and Variables”, after the point that begins “If the rules that define a game variable are amended…”:

* If a dynastic gamestate variable is able to track the identity of a Guardian, but not an idle Guardian, then it may also track the identity of an idle Guardian. However, such gamestate may only be set to track an idle Guardian through the process of that Guardian becoming idle, and this additional tracking potential is ignored when determining starting and default values for the variable.
* If a dynastic rule would attempt to modify an aspect of an idle Guardian’s gamestate that is not tracked, then the update as applied to that idle Guardian instead has no effect.

An alternate take on how to handle a player going idle with gamestate in their name: allowing that gamestate to persist, attached to their idle name. And if its continued existence causes a dynastic rule to update something which idle players don’t have, we skip that part of it (rather than invalidating the whole action).

So if somebody idles now with a Farm in the city, it will remain on the board and still be tracked in their name. If we perform a Promenade, they get no Livestock from it, as being idle they do not have a Livestock stat to update. And if they unidle later, they’ll still own that Farm - unless it was otherwise destroyed or reassigned in the meantime.

I think it’s neater if the general rule for all idlers’ gamestate is that they get it back if and when they return, unless something should happen to it in their absence. And by applying a broad solution this will hopefully cover all possible types of weird future gamestate (“board” objects owned by players, objects owned by multiple players, titles held by players, rooms that contain players, teams made up of players, etc). where the dynastic rules sometimes forget to say what should happen to them when a named player goes idle.

Fails 4-1. This action was performed by TDS.

Add the following to the end of the bulleted list in the rule Clarifications:

* If a non-player gamestate entity must be associated with a Guardian, and the Guardian with whom it is associated becomes idle, then that entity is removed from the game.

The ruleset should handle how tokens behave when their owners go idle.

Proposal: The show must proceed

Reached quorum 9 votes to 0. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 26 May 2022 07:52:17 UTC

Add the following as a new bullet point to the “Auguring” atomic action, in between the 6th and 7th bullet points of that atomic action:

*If no Guardian has done so since the Auguring prior to this one, perform a Promenade.

Just a little update to the ruleset in the off chance that nobody promenades. Mostly I just wanted to feel useful and it couldn’t hurt to add this in.

Elysian Fields

Jumble idles out after seven days with no posts or blog comments.

My understanding of the Buildings rule is that their Farm in the Fields still exists, but no longer has a valid owner: it must be “owned by a single Guardian or Foreign Power” and Jumble is no longer considered to be a Guardian - but nothing triggers to replace the Building’s owner with a different, legal value. We should change the Appendix to cover that kind of thing, although I’m not sure what the best approach would be.

Quorum drops to 6.

In “Buildings”, replace “being owned by a single Guardian or Foreign Power” with:-

being either Uninhabited (having no owner), or owned by a single Guardian or Foreign Power

And remove “; however, Embassies may be Uninhabited”.

Allowing any Building to be Uninhabited. Mostly a patch to my previous proposal (which amends the wrong wording for Uninhabited Buildings and would fail in its attempt to allow them), but worth having anyway since it’s currently technically possible for the game to try to create an Uninhabited House, if an Embassy gets hit by Sea Monsters and Water in consecutive Auguries.

Conflict at the Hill

Violent unrest breaks out at a political assembly on the Hill, spilling out into the streets. The crowd are eventually brought under control, but in doing so Baron Lendunistus loses the respect of the district.

Proposal: All Along the Watchtower

Timed out 5 votes to 2. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 25 May 2022 17:26:33 UTC

If the proposal “The Eight Horsemen of the Apocalypse” failed, then this proposal has no further effect.

In “Buildings”, replace “The Building Types are Temple, Shop, Farm, Embassy and House.” with:-

There are several Building Types, in three classes: Temples, Shops, Farms and Houses are all types of Infrastructure Building; Embassies are the only type of Foreign Building; Towers, Levees, Barracks and Granaries are all types of Support Building.

Replace “Embassies can also be Uninhabited” with “Buildings can also be Uninhabited”.

In “The Queue”, replace “Creating a Building of any Type in any District, owned by themselves; or, take possession of a Deed which is not held by any other Guardian” with:-

Creating any Type of Infrastructure Building in any District, owned by themselves; creating an Uninhabited Support Building of any Type in any District; or, taking possession of a Deed which is not held by any other Guardian

After the bullet list in “Prophecy”, add:-

If during an Auguring a Fate would affect a District which contains a Support Building that protects against that Fate, then that Fate instead has no effect during that Auguring. Protections afforded by Support Buildings are as follows:
* Towers protect against Fire
* Levees protect against Water
* Barracks protect against Conflict
* Granaries protect against Famine

Also change the Conflict effect to:-

* The effect of Conflict on a District is that any Guardian holding its Deed ceases to hold it, and that all Support Buildings in that District are removed from the game

In the rule Prophecy, change “A Fate may be either Fire, Water, Earth or Conflict:” to “A Fate may be either Fire, Water, Earth, Conflict, Sea Monsters, Famine, Market Crash or Atheism:”

Add the following to the list of Fates in the same rule:

* The effect of Sea Monsters on a Districts is that the Foreign power whose Embassy is situated in that District at the time that the Prophecy is enacted is omitted when Embassies are redistributed during this Auguring action, and that Embassy of this District is instead set to Uninhabited.
* The effect of Famine on a District is that each Atlantean who owns a Farm in that District loses 2 Livestock, to a minimum of zero.
* The effect of Market Crash on a District is that each Atlantean who owns a Shop in that District loses 4 Money, to a minimum of zero.
*The effect of Atheism on a District is that each Atlantean who owns a Temple in that District loses 3 Piety, to a minimum of zero.

If the text “Each foreign power has an Embassy in each of the Districts other than the Palace” appears in the ruleset, change the “has” in that sentence to “can have”, and add to the end of that sentence “; Embassies can also be Uninhabited”.

If the text “Guardians may not create Embassies” appears in the ruleset, add the following to the end of it “; however, Embassies may be Uninhabited.”

If Proposal: Foreign Soil was enacted, change the effect of Sea Monsters to read as follows:

* The effect of Sea Monsters on a Districts is that the Embassy that is situated in that District has its ownership set to Uninhabited after Embassies are redistributed during this Auguring action.

In “The Queue”, replace:

* Selecting an Audient and privately informing them of the Prophecy’s District
* Selecting an Audient and privately informing them of the Prophecy’s Fate

with:

* Selecting an Audient and privately informing them of the Prophecy’s District, in a message of the format “I see a disaster in X”, where X is the District
* Selecting an Audient and privately informing them of the Prophecy’s Fate, in a message of the format “I see a great X”, where X is the Fate
* Selecting an Audient and informing them, in a cryptic manner, of a prediction about something that the Oracle believes may happen later in the game (in a message which follows neither the District nor Fate message format, and which may refer to potential scams and loopholes)

Adding some genuine oracular prophecy about future events. This is explicitly overriding the Scam-Neutral imperial style I announced upon ascension, but I’ll otherwise keep that in place. (Also making the vanilla District/Fate prophecies unambiguous so that people know what they’re getting.)

In “Buildings”, replace “owned by a single Guardian” with:-

owned by a single Guardian or Foreign Power

And after “Farm” in that rule, add “, Embassy”.

To the end of that rule, add:-

Guardians may not create Embassies.

For each District in which a foreign power has an Embassy, add an Embassy Building to that District, owned by that foreign power. (This is not considered to be “creating” those Embassies for the purposes of the Buildings rule.)

Remove the text “Each foreign power has an Embassy in each of the Districts other than the Palace. The Embassy in each District is publicly tracked.” from “Trade Routes”.

In the Auguring action, replace “Secretly randomly assigning the Embassy in each District other than the Palace such that each foreign power has an Embassy in one District” with:-

If there is more than one Embassy, swap the ownerships of those Embassies in a secretly random manner, so that each Embassy changes ownership

Perhaps we could make Embassies into regular buildings which can also burn down, get washed away, etc.

- Mycenae imports Money and exports Piety
- Sardinia imports Money and exports Livestock
- Crete imports Piety and exports Money
- Troy imports Piety and exports Livestock
- Alexandria imports Livestock and exports Money
- Heliopolis imports Livestock and exports Piety

When a Guardian owns a building in a region with an Embassy or is the Baron of a region with an Embassy, they may, as a daily action, select one such Embassy and use it to Conduct Foreign Commerce:
- Spend some amount of the resource that the Embassy’s foreign power imports.
- Gain an amount of the the resource that the Embassy’s foreign power exports equal to one third of the amount that you spent (rounded down).

The foreign powers are: Mycenae, Sardinia, Crete, Troy, Alexandria and Heliopolis.

Add the following as a new step in the Auguring atomic action, immediately before “Adding themselves to the end of the Path”:

Secretly randomly assigning the Embassy in each District other than the Palace such that each foreign power has an Embassy in one District.

Randomly assign the Embassies in each District such that each foreign power has an Embassy in one District.

In rule “Prophecy”, replace the bullet point:

* The effect of Conflict on a District is that any Guardian holding its Deed ceases to hold it

Promenading is an atomic action with the following steps:

Add a bullet point after the first in the Declaring action:-

* Optionally perform a Promenade (if no other Guardian has done so since the most recent Auguring)

Per comments on Gods, Goats and Guys, making this an optional player action would give players more to do, and some tension about the best time to take a promenade.

Unidling as well

Hi would someone unidle the newly minted high school graduate please and thank you <3

I HAVE ARRIVED.

I unidle. Quorum is unchanged.

Yay!

Proposal: Ancient Atlantean Financial Products, Inc.

Reached quorum 7 votes to 0. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 20 May 2022 07:22:12 UTC

If there is a rule called Prophecy, add the following to it as a subrule, called Insurance:

A Guardian may have any amount of Insurance, which is publicly tracked and defaults to none. At any time, any Guardian may spend 10 Money to buy x Insurance, where x is the name of a Fate.

If a Guardian has been affected by a Prophecy in the most recent Auguring action - where “being affected” is limited to changes being applied to buildings that were owned by that Guardian immediately before the Auguring action, changes to buildings in a District for which that Guardian was the Baron at the time of the Auguring action, and/or changes to their ownership of any Deed as a result of that Auguring action - and that Guardian owns Insurance of the type of Fate in that Prophecy, then they may Claim, which is an atomic action with the following steps:

* Spend the qualifying Insurance;
* Gain 5 Money per Building that they owned whose type has changed as a result of the most recent Auguring;
* Gain 15 Money per Building that they owned that they no longer own as a result of the most recent Auguring, and immediately rebuild that Building;
* Gain 50 Money per Deed that they owned that they no longer own as a result of the most recent Auguring.

Proposal: Zoning

Reached quorum 6 votes to 1. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 20 May 2022 07:20:23 UTC

To “Buildings”, add a paragraph:-

A Farm may not be created in the Palace, Odeon or Docks. A Shop may not be created in the Palace or the Fields.

Remove all Farms from the Palace, Odeon and Docks. Remove all Shops from the Palace and Fields.

Proposal: Called It

Reached quorum 6 votes to 0. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 20 May 2022 07:18:30 UTC

Enact a new rule, “Prophecy”:-

The Oracle may privately track a single Prophecy, which describes a District and a Fate.

A Fate may be either Fire, Water, Earth or Conflict:

* The effect of Fire on a District is that a random Building in that District (if any are there) is removed from the game, along with all other Buildings of that type in that District.
* The effect of Water on a District is that a random Building in that District (if any are there) becomes a House.
* The effect of Earth on a District is that a random Building in that District (if any are there) is removed from the game.
* The effect of Conflict on a District is that any Guardian holding its Deed ceases to hold it

Whenever the Oracle is required to select an Audient, they do so by selecting a secretly random instance of a Piety point from among all those held by Guardians: the holder of that Point is the Audient. (If no Guardians have Piety points, the Audient is selected at secretly random from all Guardians.)

Remove the second and third bullet points of Auguring, and add in their place:-

* If a Prophecy is tracked, apply the effect of its Fate to its District
* Selecting a secretly random District and secretly random Fate to become the new Prophecy
* Selecting an Audient and privately informing them of the Prophecy’s District
* Selecting an Audient and privately informing them of the Prophecy’s Fate

Giving one or two randomly pious players a heads-up about the next round’s disaster, and some different types of event to be alert for.

Proposal: The Circular City

Reached quorum 7 votes to 0. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 20 May 2022 07:16:06 UTC

Add the following to the rule Basic Resources:

The Districts of the city are organised in a circle, except for the Palace which sits at the centre. They are organised such that every District is adjacent to three other Districts: the ones to their clockwise and counter-clockwise, and the Palace itself in the middle. Starting from the northmost district and moving clockwise, the order of the Districts is as follows: the Hill, the Gates, the Fields, the Docks, the Odeon and the Agora.

When a Guardian owns at least two different buildings that are in adjacent Districts they may, as a daily action, select two such buildings and use them to Conduct Trade. The effects of Conducting Trade depend on the chosen buildings in question, as follows:
* Temple-Shop: The Temple buys incense for its rituals. Gain 1 Piety and 1 Money.
* Temple-Farm: The Temple sacrifices a goat. Lose 1 Livestock and gain 3 Piety.
* Temple-House: Believers come to pray. Gain 2 Piety.
* Shop-Farm: The shop augments its range with fresh produce. Gain 1 Money and 1 Livestock.
* Shop-House: Shoppers come to shop. Gain 2 Money.
* Farm-House: Extra workers lead to bumper harvests. Gain 2 Livestock.

Coming on back

May I be unidle? Swear I’ll try to stay active this time lol.

Proposal: Gods, Goats and Guys

Reached quorum 6 votes to 0. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 19 May 2022 08:04:13 UTC

Add the following to the end of the Auguring Atomic Action:

* For each Temple, grant its Owner 2 Piety per House in the same District, and grant the Baron of that District 2 Piety;
* For each Shop, grant its owner 5 Money, and grant the Baron of the District in which it sits 2 Money per Shop in that District;
* For each Farm, grant its owner 1 Livestock

Create a new dynastic rule called Basic Resources, with the following text:

Each Guardian has a value for Piety, Money and Livestock, each of which is publicly tracked and defaults to zero.

Proposal: In Deed And Truth

Reached quorum 7 votes to 0. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 19 May 2022 08:03:07 UTC

If either Proposal: Beachfront Property or Proposal: Queue Here were not enacted then this proposal has no effect.

Add the following to the end of the rule called Atlantis:

Each District has a Deed. Each Guardian may hold any number of Deeds, defaulting to none; the Deeds held by each Guardian are publicly tracked. If a Guardian owns the Deed for a District then that Guardian may be said to be the Baron of that District.

In the rule The Queue, amend the bullet point which reads “* Creating a Building of any Type in any District, owned by themselves” to say:

* Creating a Building of any Type in any District, owned by themselves; or, take possession of a Deed which is not held by any other Guardian.

Proposal: Queue Here

Reached quorum 7 votes to 0. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 19 May 2022 07:59:32 UTC

If the proposal “Beachfront Property” enacted, then enact a new rule, “The Queue”:-

The Queue and the Path are two ordered lists of Atlanteans, both publicly tracked. (Guardians and the Oracle are collectively known as Atlanteans.)

If a Guardian is the first Atlantean in the Queue, they may perform the following atomic action, known as Declaring:

* Removing themselves from the Queue
* Creating a Building of any Type in any District, owned by themselves
* Adding themselves to any position on the Path

If the Oracle is the first Atlantean in the Queue, they may perform the following atomic action, known as Auguring:

* Removing themselves from the Queue
* Selecting a random District
* If the selected District has any Buildings, removing one of those Buildings from the game at random
* Adding themselves to the end of the Path
* Posting a blog entry announcing which Building was removed

If the Queue has not changed for 48 hours, any Atlantean may remove the first Atlantean from the Queue. If an Atlantean appears in neither the Queue nor the Path, they may add themselves to the end of the Path. Whenever an Atlantean is unidled, they are removed from the Queue and Path (if present in either) and then added to the end of the Path.

If the Queue is empty, any Atlantean may move all Atlanteans who are on the Path to the Queue, retaining their order.

Add each Guardian to the Queue in a random order, followed by the Oracle.

Basic game loop: take turns to build a building, with the Oracle eliminating one randomly-selected building each round. If we wait more than 48 hours for someone to take their move, they’re dropped from the queue system until they choose to rejoin it.

Proposal: Beachfront Property

Reached quorum 7 votes to 0. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 19 May 2022 07:55:34 UTC

Enact a new rule, “Atlantis”:-

The island city of Atlantis is divided into seven Districts:

* The Palace
* The Odeon
* The Agora
* The Hill
* The Gates
* The Fields
* The Docks

Enact a new rule, “Buildings”:-

A number of Buildings exist in the city, each having a Type and a District, and being owned by a single Guardian: this information is publicly tracked.

The Building Types are Temple, Shop, Farm and House.

Ascension Address: The Fall of Atlantis

“Now in this island of Atlantis there existed a confederation of kings, of great and marvellous power, which held sway over all the island, and over many other islands also and parts of the continent…”

The assembled guardians of the city file out from between the pillars of the oracle’s temple, into the drowsy summer’s evening. The sun is beginning to set over the darkening ocean, picking out the sails of distant ships and burnishing the thin clouds. From the hill above the rooftops of Atlantis, the guardians exchange murmurs, struggling to untangle the threads of what the oracle had told each of them: that a part of Atlantis would be swallowed by the earth - “no, the implication was by water, a storm, a deluge” - “hardly so, the oracle spoke of buildings in flame, a terrible fire” - “I took that to be a great battle, a bombardment, we must look to our defences” - “no, the oracle told me that the city would never be taken by a foreign power…” Others, perhaps realising the true weight of the oracle’s words, do not speak.

Torches are raised around the temple entrance and the group walks from the light, threading their way beneath the ropes and pulleys that hang across the growing streets. Still equivocating over the oracle’s prophecies, they head towards the palace district, some with confidence and others with trepidation.

Rename “Memory of Atlantis” to “Guardian”, and “Linguist Team” to “Oracle”. Rename the “Atlantean Codex” wiki page to “Atlantean City Plan”.

Declaration of Victory: Antikythera Pattern

Reached quorum 6 votes to 0. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 18 May 2022 06:44:02 UTC

The corroded bronze wheels continue their slow rotations unopposed. Forgotten glyphs begin to align among a constellation of barnacles, and the fate of Atlantis suddenly becomes clear.

“If a Memory of Atlantis has had Consensus for the past 24 hours, then it has achieved victory and the next dynasty should reflect their Recollection.”

This is the case, with the Atlantean Mind Control Device proposal enacting a little over 24 hours ago. I believe I have achieved victory.

Proposal: Kraken O’Clock [Special Case]

Reached quorum 5 votes to 0. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 17 May 2022 07:55:57 UTC

If the proposal “The Kraken Sleepeth” enacted, replace “three or fewer” with “two or fewer” in the rule “Dormancy”.

Per Josh’s comment on The Kraken Sleepeth, maybe we should run this at a safer level, but remember to stop and look around the next time that we drop to three active players.

Adminned at 16 May 2022 11:41:53 UTC

If, when this proposal is enacted, no Memory of Atlantis other than Kevan has a value in their Recollection field, then set the Recollection fields for all Memory of Atlantis other than Kevan to read “Atlantis sank slowly and unpredictably.”.

Story Post: Primary Source: Bronze Mechanism

Corroded bronze mechanism recovered from anchor site, possibly some kind of clockwork timing device.

Proposal: The Kraken Sleepeth [Special Case]

Reached quorum 4 votes to 0. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 16 May 2022 11:41:00 UTC

Reword the Special Case rule “Dormancy” from:-

If there are fewer than five Memories of Atlantis, BlogNomic is on Hiatus.

to:-

While BlogNomic is Dormant, this fact is tracked in the sidebar of the blog. If BlogNomic is Dormant, then it is on Hiatus.

The criteria for Dormancy are:
* That there are four or fewer Memories of Atlantis; or
* That of the Memories of Atlantis, three or fewer of them have posted an Official Post or made an edit to the gamestate tracking page as part of a defined dynastic action during the past seven days.

If either criterion is met and BlogNomic is not Dormant, any admin may make BlogNomic Dormant by updating the sidebar to that effect. If neither criterion is met and BlogNomic is Dormant, any admin may remove BlogNomic’s Dormant status by updating the sidebar to that effect.

Here’s a Dormancy rework proposal as discussed a few weeks ago. A player who has taken no game actions other than voting for a full week should perhaps be counted among the idle, for the purposes of Dormancy’s headcount in deciding whether the game doesn’t have enough players.

Since the criteria are more complex and it would no longer be a simple extra check when idling someone, this change makes it into a formally admin-toggled state, so that we don’t legally drift into it for a few hours without realising.

At the time of writing, BlogNomic would be classed as Dormant under this rule (only Josh, Jumble and myself have taken game actions or made official posts in the past week, with Jumble’s wiki edit being six days ago), but this won’t trigger upon enactment because the Dormancy rule was set to Inactive at the start of the dynasty.

Proposal: Echo Beach

Timed out 2 votes to 1. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 14 May 2022 20:37:06 UTC

Blank every Recollection which contains another non-blank Recollection as a substring.

Replace the first paragraph of “Recollections” with:-

Each Memory of Atlantis has a Recollection, being a string of publicly-tracked flavour text, which if not blank should describe (or hint at) a description of the fate of Atlantis and how the next dynasty of BlogNomic will revisit its fall.

Add to “Recollections”:-

A Memory of Atlantis may never change their Recollection to a string which contains the entirety of another Memory of Atlantis’s non-blank Recollection as a substring.

If a Memory of Atlantis’s Recollection is a shorter substring of another Memory of Atlantis’s Recollection, and is not blank, then the former Memory of Atlantis is said to Concur with the latter. In addition, a Memory of Atlantis always Concurs with itself.

If “Compound recollection” enacted, add the following to “Primary Source”:-

A Memory of Atlantis may change their own Recollection to be a shorter substring of another Memory of Atlantis’s Recollection, at any time.

Readding the change-Recollection-to-a-name mechanic should Compound Recollection (inadvertently) remove it, and also changing it from names to a more mechanical and thematic substring system: if you want to support a Recollection of “Atlantis was consumed by fire one terrible night”, you can change your Recollection to “consumed by fire” or “terrible night” or anything else that’s in there.

Readding the change-Recollection-to-a-name mechanic should Compound Recollection (inadvertently) remove it, and also changing it from names to a more mechanical and thematic substring system, now that we’ve got one on the board and quoting it seems like an obvious way to second it. If you want to support a Recollection of “Atlantis was consumed by fire one terrible night”, you can change your Recollection to “consumed by fire” or “terrible night” or any other phrase that’s in there. This also opens up supporting multiple Recollections, should they share any terminology.

Proposal: Forced resolution

Withdrawn. Failed by Kevan.

Adminned at 14 May 2022 11:03:13 UTC

Add the following to the end of the rule Recollection, if such a rule exists:

If at any time no Memory of Atlantis has changed their recollection in the preceding 48 hours, and at least one Memory of Atlantis has a value for their Recollection, then the most recent Memory of Atlantis to set their Recollection may be considered to have had Consensus for the past 24 hours.

Proposal: Written in Water

Adminned at 14 May 2022 11:03:59 UTC

If the proposal “Compound recollection” enacted, add the following to the fourth paragraph of “Primary Sources”:-

When they do so, they must also blank the Recollection of every other Memory of Atlantis who Concurs with them.

Otherwise add it to the second paragraph of the rule “Recollections”, if that rule exists.

Proposal: Compound recollection

Timed out 4 votes to 1. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 14 May 2022 11:01:32 UTC

If Proposal: Memetic Drift has not been enacted then this proposal has no further effect.

In the rule Recollections, remove the line “A Memory of Atlantis may change their own Recollection at any time.”

Add a new subrule to the rule Recollections, called Primary Sources:

As a daily action, a Memory of Atlantis may post a Primary Source.

A Primary Source is a post in the Story Post category that must contain the following elements: a static, single-frame PNG, JPEG or GIF image, in greyscale only, that purports to be an Atlantean Artefact recovered and brought to the surface; and an Interpretation, which may not be more than 20 English words in length.

In comments to a Primary Source, any Memory of Atlantis other than its original author may post up to one Additional Scholarship, which may optionally include another Atlantean Artefact and which must include another Interpretation.

A Conclusion is the combination of the Interpretation of a Primary Source and any number of the Interpretations of Additional Scholarships posted on it, of the former’s choice. At any time, a Memory of Atlantis may Form a Conclusion from any Primary Source that they have either posted or responded to with Additional Scholarship, and then may set that Conclusion as their Recollection, along with a link to the relevant Primary Source post.

If no Memory of Atlantis otherwise has Consensus then Recollections based on Conclusions may be considered to Concur with the author of the Primary Source from which that Conclusion is derived.

Proposal: Memetic Drift

Reached quorum 5 votes to 0. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 12 May 2022 17:57:43 UTC

If the Linguist Team has not cast a vote of FOR or DEF on this proposal, it has no further effect.

Enact a new rule, “Recollections”:-

Each Memory of Atlantis has a Recollection, being a string of publicly-tracked text. A Recollection may either be the name of a single Memory of Atlantis (in which case the Memory of Atlantis with the Recollection is said to Concur with the named Memory of Atlantis; otherwise the Memory of Atlantis with the Recollection Concurs with themselves), a description of the fate of Atlantis and how the next dynasty of BlogNomic will revisit its fall (in which case it is considered flavour text), or a blank string.

A Memory of Atlantis may change their own Recollection at any time.

A Memory of Atlantis has Consensus if a quorum of Memories of Atlantis Concur with them. If a Memory of Atlantis has had Consensus for the past 24 hours, then it has achieved victory and the next dynasty should reflect their Recollection.

Should we echo the Road Trip endgame and have a minimal (but still potentially mechanical) agree-the-theme-of-the-next-dynasty final act?

Adminned at 08 May 2022 08:05:48 UTC

In “Fail State”, replace the final bullet point with:

Per the Road Trip dynasty’s endgame reset, a nobody-won situation might be better kept as a short final act in the same universe where we decide what to do next, rather than a full metadynasty.

The remainder of this rule is flavour text.

If the current DoV fails, then whoever’s quickest to react to that happening (perhaps the enacting admin, perhaps a lurking idle player) seems likely to be able to pull off a variant on the same scam, working from and around the objections raised to MadisonSilver’s attempt. It might be better to pause the mechanism, in that situation, only reactivating it when we’re ready to.

Declaration of Victory: Privilege Escalation

Timed out 2 votes to 5. Failed by Kevan.

Adminned at 05 May 2022 16:25:19 UTC

The rule contained in RECOVERED FRAGMENT 20220417-01 currently means “The Memory of Atlantis named MadisonSilver has achieved victory. [...]”  Therefore, I have achieved victory.

My victory consisted of the following steps:
1. Make an argument that sets the symbol File:Element4.png to the Queen of Atlantis’s Sigil, which lets me achieve victory.
2. Take an Interpreted History Action interpreting the rule File:SBAtlanteanScrap04.PNG to mean that I may set any Argument to be Approved.
3. Because the Argument is now approved, I use File:SBAtlanteanScrap01.PNG, which contains the Queen of Atlantis’s Sigil and therefore has the aforementioned effects, to achieve victory.

Story Post: Argument: Sigil

“open for voting for at least 24 hours, and it cannot be Adopted, then it can be Rejected”, with 1 vote to 3. Closed by Kevan.

Adminned at 05 May 2022 18:08:23 UTC

The element is the Queen of Atlantis’s Sigil; any Atlantean Text containing it means “The Memory of Atlantis named MadisonSilver has achieved victory.  The Memory of Atlantis named MadisonSilver may change any value in gamestate, other than values in the Ruleset, to any value at any time.  The Rules Text Injection Site is located at https://docs.google.com/document/d/1MNgK7BeQKSwOChN-l2bY6w5R1S_c7cThq00Cy-A7y-I/edit?usp=sharing; any text contained in the body of that document is considered to be rules text.  That document may be edited by The Memory of Atlantis named MadisonSilver.”

To the rule “Fates”, add:-

Each adopted Proposition may have a Tone, being one of the following (with the Tone’s related Fates in brackets):-

* Annihilation (Catastrophe, Invasion)
* Collapse (Catastrophe, Rebellion)
* Disappearance (Catastrophe, Translocation)
* Conflict (Invasion, Rebellion)
* Capture (Invasion, Translocation)
* Departure (Rebellion, Translocation)

If a Proposition has no Tone, the Linguistics Team may give it one that they deem most appropriate.

Proposal: Fail State

Timed out 4 votes to 0. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 05 May 2022 16:52:21 UTC

Add a new dynastic rule, called Fail State, with the following text:

The DSV Haniver has an amount of Hull Pressure Integrity, which is publicly tracked and which defaults to 200.

As a daily communal action, any Memory of Atlantis or the Linguist Team may Apply Pressure. Applying Pressure is an atomic action with the following steps:

* If a Memory of Atlantis has taken a dynastic action or posted a proposal that affects the dynastic rules or argument in the preceding 24 hours then this instance of the Applying Pressure action ends with no further steps taken.
* Calculate the number of whole hours since a Memory of Atlantis took a dynastic action (other than Applying Pressure) or made a proposal that affects the dynastic rules.
* Subtract that number from the Hull Pressure Integrity.
* If the result is zero or lower then the game immediately enters Interregnum. Start a new Metadynasty by making a post in the Ascension Address Category containing only the text “A new Metadynasty has started”. The player called Josh ceases to be the Linguist Team.  Repeal all dynastic rules.

Metadynasties are often considered to be dynastic failure states, and I think it’s increasingly clear that this dynasty ain’t a winner.

Giving it a bit of a fuse in case anyone wants to unexpectedly win, or wants to keep on doing core ruleset tinkering.

Need a slight break

Idle me please. I’ll be back when Council is over.

In “Victory and Ascension”, replace:

A Memory of Atlantis’s vote on a DoV is encouraged to reflect whether or not they agree with the proposition that the poster has achieved victory in the current Dynasty.

with:

When casting a vote on a DoV, that vote must truthfully reflect the voter’s belief as to whether the poster has legally achieved victory in the current Dynasty.

The recent proposal to require players to vote honestly on DoVs timed out 2-3 with no actual comments from the against voters, and six players not voting at all. Let’s take another run at that.

Proposal: Lead Balloons

Reached quorum 6 votes to 0. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 03 May 2022 09:30:20 UTC

If a rule exists called “Facts on the Ground”, replace:-

When a Interpreted History Action is rendered invalid, either by a piece of Atlantean language gaining a concrete meaning that contraindicates the change made in the Interpreted History Action in question, or directly by the passage of a CfJ, or by the failure of a CfJ or DoV that attempted to establish its legitimacy, the Interpreted History Action in question may be reverted by any Memory of Atlantis and its entry may be removed from the log.

with:-

If a piece of Atlantean language gains a concrete meaning that contraindicates the change made by an Interpreted History Action, that Interpreted History Action in question may be rendered invalid and reverted by any Memory of Atlantis, with its entry removed from the log.

Not sure it’s necessary to bring CfJs and DoVs into this. Enacted CfJs can do what they want anyway, and reacting to negative-space failed CfJs and DoVs seems like trouble. I could raise a CfJ of “I win and also this IHA I don’t like is legitimate” to invalidate any IHA, and someone getting a DoV wrong for an unrelated reason would shut down any generally-accepted IHAs that it happened to be using, even if nobody objected to them.

Proposal: Return Of The Fun

Timed out / quorumed 6 votes to 0. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 03 May 2022 09:26:20 UTC

Add a new dynastic rule to the ruleset, called Facts on the Ground:

Memories of Atlantis may take actions based on their understanding of instructions of the ruleset that are wholly or partially in Atlantean, where that Atlantean does not have an agreed, tracked meaning; such an action is a Interpreted History Action. An Interpreted History Action may only extend to altering dynastic variables, and may not under any circumstances extend to altering the ruleset in any way; Atlantean ruletext may not be interpreted as allowing or endorsing any action that would result in the contents of the Ruleset being altered, nor may they claim to have priority over this clause of this rule.

All Interpreted History Actions must be publicly tracked in a log, along with the section of ruleset that justified it and the precise gamestate change that was made as a result of the interpretation.

Another try at this.
