Proposal: Jealous Gods

Add a new rule to the ruleset, entitled “Worshipers:”

In the city of Rome there are one hundred Citizens.  Each Citizen belongs to one of the following castes:
Senator (ten citizens)
Merchant (fifteen citizens)
Laborer (twenty-five citizens)
Farmer (fifty citizens)

A Citizen who worships exactly zero Divinities is called an Atheist.  A Citizen who worships exactly one Divitiny is called a Monotheist.  A Citizen who worships at least two Divinities is called a Polytheist.  Each Citizen may worship at least zero Divinities and at most all Divinities.

All Citizens begin as Atheists.

As a weekly Action, individual Citizens may offer up Prayers.  If the rule “Influence” exists, a die roll shall determine which Citizens offer Prayers, and whether each Citizen offers a Prayer in the Ephemeral, Material or Domestic sphere.  Divinities may Answer Prayers.  Each Divinity may anwer up to six Prayers per week.

If a Farmer offers a Prayer, and exactly zero Divinities answer the Prayer, then all Divinities shall lose one Prominence.
If a Farmer offers a Prayer, and exactly one Divinity answers the Prayer, then that Divinity shall gain one Prominence, and the Farmer offering the Prayer shall become a Worshiper of the Divinity who answered the Prayer.
If a Farmer offers a Prayer, and at least two Divinities answer the Prayer, then the Divinity with greatest Influence in the sphere in which the Prayer was offered shall gain one Prominence, and the Farmer offering the Prayer shall become a Worshiper of this Divinity.
If a Farmer offers a Prayer, and at least two Divinities answer the Prayer, and at least two of these Divinities have equal Influence in the sphere in which the Prayer was offered, then the Divinity with greater Prominence shall gain one Prominence, and the Farmer offering the Prayer shall become a Worshiper of this Divinity.

If a Laborer offers a Prayer, the Rules shall be the same as for Farmers, except the Prayer shall be worth two Prominence.
If a Merchant offers a Prayer, the Rules shall be the same as for Farmers, except the Prayer shall be worth three Prominence.
If a Senator offers a Prayer, the Rules shall be the same as for Farmers, except the Prayer shall be worth Five Prominence.

I don’t expect this to pass, and I suspect I can see only a few of its many flaws.  I’m proposing it mostly to get a sense of what it’s like to propose a rule, and in hopes that feedback in the comments will help me get a better sense of what needs to be considered when proposing a rule.  I have some ideas of where I think this idea could go, but am not sure how to articulate them—or how much to propose at a time.  Ways to steal Worshipers from other Divinities, ways to get a Worshiper to go Monotheist and maybe even convert other Citizens by the sword, etc…

Proposal: Don’t sphere the future

If the proposal titled “Through the Ages” does not pass, this proposal does nothing

Add a new dynastic rule called “Spheres”. Give it the following text

There exist five elemental Spheres, Earth, Fire, Wind, Water and Heart. These spheres are each given a section in an wikipage titled “Elemental Spheres”. Each section contains the following information:

1) The current master of the sphere. If there is no master of the sphere this is set to the current Optimus Divinity.
2) The amount of power, a non-negative integer represented as a roman numeral, each divinity has in the sphere. If a divinity has no power in the sphere he does not have to be listed.
3) A historical list of the previous grand masters of the sphere.

The total power a given divinity has in all five spheres is known as their Expended Prominence. If a divinity’s Expended Prominence is greater than their Prominence, any divinity may decrease
their power in any sphere by one, provided it remains non-negative. (This may be done repeatedly until the divinity’s Expended Prominence is less than or equal to their Prominence). If
a divinity’s Expended Prominence is less than their Prominence, that divinity may increase their power in any sphere by one.  (This may also be done repeatedly until the divinity’s
Expended Prominence is equal to their Prominence).

If a divinity’s power in a sphere is greater than all other divinity’s power within that sphere, they become the master of that sphere and the wikipage is to be updated accordingly.

In the rule “Ages” replace

Whenever the Imperatrix advances the Age, all values tracked in the GNDT are reset to the values defined by the rules for new starters. The Divinity who had the highest value for Prominence at the end of an Age is considered to be the Optimus Divinity for the next Age.

with

Whenever the Imperatrix advances the Age, all values tracked in the GNDT are reset to the values defined by the rules for new starters. The name of the current master of each sphere is added as well as the name of the age that just ended (in the form AGE NAME: DEITY NAME) is added to the end of the section of historical list of the previous grand masters of the sphere for that sphere, and the power levels of divinity’s in each sphere are all set back to zero. (The current master remains the same).
The Divinity who had the highest value for Prominence at the end of an Age is considered to be the Optimus Divinity for the next Age.

Proposal: Deus Domesticus

Adminned at 30 Nov 2010 22:12:43 UTC

Create a new Rule, “Influence”:

The Old Gods divide their Influence over the world into the spheres of the Ephemeral, Material and Domestic; these levels of Influence are tracked by three columns in the GNDT, each with possible values of Positive (++), Neutral (N), or Negative (—).  A Divinity defaults to having Neutral Influence in each sphere.  At any time, if a Divinity has Neutral influence in all three spheres, they may simultaneously set one Influence to Positive and another to Negative.

If the Rule “Ages” exists, append the following to it:

Whenever the Age changes, within 24 hours of the change, each Divinity may set all their Influences to Neutral exactly once.

If the Rule “The Old Gods” exists, change “Each Divinity may or may not have an Old Name, tracked in the GNDT.” to:-

Each Divinity may or may not have an Old Name, tracked in the GNDT (and defaulting to not having an Old Name).

If the Rule “Piety” exists, replace “A new Divinity’s Prominence starts at I.” with:-

Each Divinity’s Prominence starts at I.

If the Rule “Ages” exists, add to its second paragraph:-

The current Optimus Divinity may be reflected in the blog sidebar.

And set all Divinities’ Prominences to I.

Fixing a couple of oversights in the previous two proposals.

Proposal: Through the Ages

Passes 19-0. —Brendan

Adminned at 30 Nov 2010 21:58:34 UTC

Add a new rule to the ruleset, entitled Piety:

Each Divinity has a Prominence, which is tracked in the GNDT and must be a Roman numeral no lower than I and no greater than C. A new Divinity’s Prominence starts at I.

Add a new rule to the ruleset, entitled Ages:

As a weekly action, but no more than twice in this dynasty, the Imperatrix may advance the Age by making a story post with a title of “Age of [TITLE]”, where [TITLE] can be any noun of the Imperatrix’s choosing. The current Age may be reflected in the blog sidebar.

Whenever the Imperatrix advances the Age, all values tracked in the GNDT are reset to the values defined by the rules for new starters. The Divinity who had the highest value for Prominence at the end of an Age is considered to be the Optimus Divinity for the next Age.

The current Age is the Age of Unreason and the current Optimus Divinity is Alecto.

A very loose structure. Ideally the Emperor wouldn’t advance ages at all, it’d be linked to player actions.

Proposal: Change of Name reenacted

Passes 16-0. I don’t seem to have administrative rights to change your blog screen name, though; might be easier just to start a new account, and I’ll swap that one in. Fixed your name in the GNDT.—Brendan

Proposal: The Age of Fama

Adminned at 30 Nov 2010 21:49:49 UTC

Enact a new rule, “The Old Gods”:-

The Minor Gods of the Roman Pantheon walk abroad in the present day, assuming fresh faces and identities. Each Divinity may or may not have an Old Name, tracked in the GNDT. If a Divinity has no Old Name, they may choose a name from the “Deity” column at http://www.unrv.com/culture/minor-roman-god-list.php, and - if no other Divinity has that Old Name - set their Old Name to that value.

Alecto’s Old Name is always “Alecto”.

Passes 18-0. —Brendan

Ascension Address: Alecto Electa - Dynasty of Dark Divinities

Millenia ago, Juppiter and Juno ruled the minds of men, and held sway over a Pantheon of major and minor gods.  But who now remembers the Celestial Tyrants?  No more do men live in fear of Dis Pater, no more is the turning of seasons recognised as Ceres’ sorrow for Proserpina.

But look at these people!  They labour yet under the burden of minor divinities.  My sisters and I play a part in their suffering - Unceasing Anger, Grudging, Avenged Murder.  The Muses bring them happiness still, when it is not snatched away from them by Egestes or raving Discordia.

And we awake again…

Repeal all Dynastic Rules, and replace “Headmaster” with “Imperatrix” and “Student” with “Divinity” throughout the Ruleset.

Don’t know if the repealing phrase is needed, but it sounds nice :P

Redo!

Domus Romanus ludus erit. Incesso.
(Grammatica meus corrige, amabo.)

Quorum duodecim est.

I’m a Roman in my Heart

Hello hello! If it’s possible, I would like to join the next dynasty.

Bonjour bonjour! Si c’est possible, j’aimerais me joindre à la prochaine dynastie.

I hope I don’t get billed for Romeing…

But I’ll un-idle.

Revising History

I am wondering why the Seventh and Eight Dynasties of Kevan were merged on the Wiki. As far as the rules are concerned, they were two different dynasties. I think that simply stating that they are two versions of the same dynasty isn’t quite accurate: in that case, which Dynasty did I win? Were there two winners to the Seventh? I feel it downplays my win as a minor event when it was as legit as any other. Sure, it was based on a small omission, which is why I passed the mantle back to Kevan - not doing so wouldn’t have felt good to me. Still, a Dynasty was one and another begun - with a by-the-book DoV and Ascension Address -, which is why I am wondering why they aren’t considered as separate.

EDIT: Re-reading this, I realize that this sounds like whining - and it probably is, too. Sorry. =P

The Next Dynasty

...will be somewhat Roman Mythos in theme.  Since I haven’t played a lot of Nomic, I’m planning to let it be pretty open ended - I’ll just give it a push.
Anyone with Antiquarian leanings want to design a site theme?  I don’t really know how…

The Ascension Address will probably be in about 24 hours, unless it takes me longer to get something I’m happy with.

Proposal: Name Change

Not a legal proposal as we are still in haitus. Please feel free to repropose once Alecto has posted his Ascension Address.

Explosive Latin Lesson: Intermediate Great Heavens, What Was That with The Headmaster

Everyone please stop cowering under your desks and pay attention!  I know you’re used to Mme Bariconder and of course this is her speciality, but while she’s doing her part as chaperone for our Tournament representative you’ll just have to put up with me.  I used to have quite a firm grip on the old tongue, you know, it’s coming back to me quite quickly, and—oh!  Oh dear, don’t worry, I’ll deflect the rubble with another explosion—

MegaMage UltraWizard Tournament 2011

You’ll be pleased to know that Bucky has been selected to represent the School at the MegaMage UltraWizard Tournament next year. He left this morning to travel to his quarters in the Athlete’s Village. As I’m sure you’re aware, the MegaMage UltraWizard Tournament has a 100% mortality rate, so I’m sure you’ll all join me in wishing Bucky the best of luck!

In the first sentence of rule 2.5, Lessons, replace the text

As a daily action, the Headmaster may call a Lesson by posting a blog entry

with

As a daily action, the Headmaster may call up to three Lessons by posting a blog entry for each lesson

Reword rule 2.7, ‘Library’ as follows:

The School Library has a vast collection of books, but zombies have been known to hide among its shelves. As a weekly action, a Student who is not a Zombie may Study in the Library by incrementing their Grade in any one Subject. As a weekly action, a Student who is a Zombie may convert to Zombie status any one Alive Student who Studied in the Library in the previous 24 hours.

Since posting a lesson is a daily action, the status of Ghost is primarily one of convenience, because you don’t have to wait for your last class to end. It does not (and I think the state of the GNDT (at least before Josh’s DIV disruption :P) reflects this) mean you can study more often than other students, as there is currently no way - barring deliberate action on the Headmaster’s part with regards to closing times - for one lesson to entirely preclude another.

If anything, Alive students can study the most often, as Ghosts cannot currently study in the Library.

Change the Effect of “Marvolo’s Challenge” to the following:

If the school is in a time of Light Ascendancy, the caster may choose to do either or both of the following:

* Change one Alive Student to Zombie
* Change one Alive Student to Ghost

If the school is in a time of Dark Ascendancy, the caster must roll a DICE10 for each Alive Student as if they were targeted by the Bullies, and apply the resulting effect as per “During Dark Ascendancy”. This action counts as an Incitement action, but it ignores the seven-day limit, and does not count for the weekly action of Inciting the Bullies.

If this Spell would be cast as a result of its own Effect, instead cast it as if the school were in a time of Light Ascendancy.

In “During Dark Ascendancy”, change

On a roll of 3 or 4, the Bullied Student fights the bullies off with magic; their LAT is incremented.

to

On a roll of 3 or 4, the Bullied Student is corrupted by the Bullies; their UNE is incremented.

Add a new subrule to “Spells”, “Headmaster’s Protection”:

Difficulty level: ALC 10, BST 8, RNY 6, LAT 4, DIV 2
Effect: If the school is in a time of Dark Ascendancy, the caster may choose to do either or both of the following:

* Change one Zombie Student to Alive
* Change one Zombie Student to Ghost

If the school is in a time of Light Ascendancy, all Alive Students gain a “Toothfish” Enchantment, and the caster gains an additional “Toothfish” Enchantment.

Ramps up Marvolo’s rather underwhelming challenge, and adds a counterpart for the good guys. Also gives Alive Students a chance of improving their UNE when the bullies are incited.

Recreational Necromancy Lesson: Intermediate Cleaning Up the Headmaster’s Office with The Headmaster

What on Earth or elsewhere happened in here, anyway?  Some kind of second-form mischief, no doubt.  All right, living students, line up behind the music stand, please.  Your zombie classmates will do the heavy lifting, but you’ll need to take turns on the Gravedigger’s Flute to keep them in line.

Change the last sentence of “2.6.3 Lord Marvolo” from:

Students who are Alive may not Study in such Lessons, and Students who are Zombies may not Disrupt them.

to:

Students who are Alive may Study in such Lessons, but they understand very little of the Zombie/Ghost language, and are only able to increment their current Grade in [UNE] by a maximum of one, for that Lesson. Students who are Zombies may Disrupt these Lessons.

In the rule 2.5.2 Disasters, change the disaster consequence in UNE from:

If a Disaster occurs in an Unbridled Evil Lesson, the pupils cheer. Any Alive Student who has taken a Class Action in the Lesson becomes a Zombie

to:

If a Disaster occurs in an Unbridled Evil Lesson, the pupils cheer. Any Alive Student who has taken a Class Action in the Lesson becomes a Zombie. Any Zombie or Ghost student who as taken a Class Action in the Lesson does not benefit the Grade increment from the Lesson.

.

I noticed that the original rules seemed to contradict each other, were Alive students weren’t allowed to study in this UNE, but the disaster rule turns the alive students that have studied in the lesson into zombies.. I’m not certain as to how “gamebreaking” this might be, but I thought I’d give a go at actually playing this game. :)

Difficulty level: ALC (-3)
Effect: If the Targeted Student is not the Caster and doesn’t join, this spell does nothing.
If the Targeted Student was in a class that has not ended when the spell is cast, that class counts as having ended for that student. The student cannot be the target of Disruptions for that class and is not affected by the Disasters triggered in that class.
If the caster has an ALC of D, E, F or Ungraded when the spell resolves (but before decrementing ALC as part of the cost for casting the spell), the caster must roll a DICE2 in the GNDT before the effect is applied. On a 1, the Targeted Student’s Condition becomes Ghost. Other effects work as normal.

New attempt with the concept of dangerous potions.

On prefects

Just a heads up in case anyone wants to CfJ: As I interpret the rules, there are currently no prefects. ‘Nobody’s Prefect’ abolished the Prefect status, and introduced the Prefect title, which are two different conditions. Brendan could reassign them at any time, of course, but at the moment no Student has the Prefect title.

You will notice that we have reclaimed a pile of animal livers from No-Face’s class and some unicorn offal from Master Heikregg. These will form a part of our artistic expression. The other, greater part will be the Headmaster’s private quarters. Come, follow me; there is much to be done.

Self-Killed. -Purplebeard

Adminned at 24 Nov 2010 05:33:48 UTC

In rule “Sweets”, add to the paragraph after the bulleted list:

It is well documented that consuming too many Jelly Deans has serious detrimental effects on the brain, in particular on memory formation and retention. Whenever a Student eats a Loved Dean or a Loathed Dean, they must also decrement their Grade in any Subject for which they have an E or higher. If they cannot, they may not eat the sweet.

Change the last sentence of “Ascendancy” to:

While the number of Loathed Deans held by all Students is greater than the number of Loved Deans held by all Students, and the total number of all Deans is greater than 25, the school is considered to be in a time of Dark Ascendancy.

And add as the next paragraph:-

If a Student is assigned to a Dormitory which has more Students in it than any other Dormitory, and a Dormitory exists which has fewer Students than any other Dormitory, then the Student may change their assignation to the latter Dormitory.

We currently have seven students in Bandersnatch and only two in Penanggalan, which seems a bit wrong. Penanggalan might like to bribe or threaten potential defectors.

In rule 2.13 (“Sweets”), at the end of “A Student may eat a Sweet they own, at any time, by removing it from their Tuck.”, add:

If that Student has no Cavity enchantment, he gains a Cavity enchantment with a Force of 1. Otherwise, he increments by one the Force of his Cavity enchantment.
If this would increase the Force of the enchantment to 6 or higher, it instead sets all the grades of that student to ‘F’ and that student’s condition is turned into a Zombie, dying of overwhelming magical cavities.

Create a new rule, named “Brushing teeth”, with the text:

Brushing your teeth is a weekly action and removes your Cavity enchantment if you had one.

Create a new subrule to rule 2.8 (“Spells”) named “Brosseae Àe Dentae”, with the text:

Difficulty Level: ALC(-3)
Effect: Removes the Target’s Cavity enchantment if it had one. If the Target is not the caster, the Target must join the spell, or there is no effect.
If the Caster’s grade in ALC is D, E, F or Ungraded, and if the Target is Alive, the caster must roll a DICE2 in the GNDT. On a 1, the target’s condition is set to Zombie.

Eating too much magical candy gives magical cavities. Brushing teeth is about as weekly as going to the washroom. Drinking a potion made by someone who fails his Alchemy class is not a good idea.

  • Student Corpus President
  • School Mascot
  • Salutorian
  • Lieutenant of the Pep Squad
  • University Mrrrgrannahh

Enact a subrule to Rule 2.10, called “Prefects”:-

At any time, the Headmaster may remove the Prefect title from any or all Students belonging to a given Dormitory, then assign the Prefect title to up to two Students in that Dormitory who are not in Detention, do not have a Title, and who have or are tied for the highest or second-highest combined total Spell Power in all subjects.

Enact a subrule to Rule 2.10, called “School Mascot”:-

The School Mascot wears the traditional Mascot’s Hat, a jingling jester’s cap impregnated with a powerful anti-magic aura. As a result, the Mascot can neither cast Spells, nor be the target of Spells (that is, a Spell cannot select the School Mascot as a “targeted Student”).

If a Student (the “Chump”) has no Title, and for each Subject there is no Student with a lower Grade in that Subject than the Chump, then the Chump is a potential Mascot. If only one Student (other than the Headmaster) is a potential Mascot, any Student may remove the School Mascot Title from any Student who has it, and then set the potential Mascot’s Title to “School Mascot”.

Message to Josh and Richard

I decremented your grades in DIV because your comments were not valid class actions.

Check rule 2.5.3, and feel free to post a valid action in this class. ^^

Proposal: The brain rules!

Passes at 12-1. -Purplebeard

Adminned at 24 Nov 2010 05:13:56 UTC

Create a rule titled “The brain rules” with the following text:

A student who has a grade of A+ in each subject achieves victory.

Straight forward. This should bring some action, as disrupting and distracting are required to stop people from improving their grades in lessons. Also some tactics are required involving prefect status and the heads of houses.

Proposal: Tooth Decay

Times out and passes at 5-4 with 2 unresolved deferentials. -Purplebeard

Adminned at 24 Nov 2010 05:12:18 UTC

Change the last paragraph of “Sweets” to the following:

If a Student has a Jelly Dean, they may roll DICE4 to unwrap it. If the result is N or less, the Jelly Dean becomes a Loved Dean. Otherwise, it becomes a Loathed Dean. N is 1 if the Student is a Zombie, 2 if they are a Ghost and 3 if they are Alive.

Proposal: These Classrooms All Look The Same

At 1-10, cannot be enacted without a CoV, and fails. —Brendan

Add the following as a subrule to “Spells”, named “Prankster Hobgoblin”:

Difficulty Level: BST 4, UNE 0, LAT 3
Effect: Once, immediately after completing this Spell, the Caster may switch the names of two Subjects in the rule “Disasters”.

In “Disasters”, change “The Alive Student with the lowest Grade in Explosive Latin” to “The Alive Student with the lowest Grade in this Subject”.

As it is now, some subjects are fairly safe to study whilst others could have game-changing effects if their disasters are triggered. This will even the odds a bit, and make the decision to Study less of a no-brainer. The RNY/UNE disasters could lead to a huge swing towards Good/Evil if they’re triggered in a crowded classroom. I’m not sure if that is a good thing or not.

Sir, I don’t understand!

Was there a reason the last part of my last proposal (adding a sub-rule to 2.5 defining Class Actions) wasn’t enacted? If so, how should I phrase future sub-rule defining proposals to ensure they are added to the ruleset?

Divination Lesson: Basic Hematoscopy with No-Face

Don’t be so white-faced, class, if it’s in the first-form textbook then I’m sure it’s perfectly safe.  Once you’ve each finished drawing a pint of your blood we can begin examining the…  hmm…  animal livers?  That can’t be right.

Oh, hepatoscopy.  Silly me!  Well, no point in all this blood going to waste.  Somebody slap Hepworth until he comes around.

Proposal: Faculty Reform

Passes at 11-0. The Headmaster now has to assign a Teacher to Ichneumon. -Purplebeard

In the rule entitled “Resident Scholar” replace the following: “Each dormitory is overseen by one of the full time faculty.”

with:

Each dormitory is overseen by one of the full time faculty. No Teacher my be assigned to more than one Dormitory.

In the rule entitled “Resident Scholar” replace the following: “After a 48 hour period, if the number of “for” votes exceeds the number of “against” votes, then the designated Teacher will be assigned to the designated Dormitory. If the number of “against” votes exceeds or ties the number of “for” votes, then no change will occur.”

with:

After a 48 hour period, if the number of “for” votes exceeds the number of “against” votes, then the designated Teacher will be unassigned from their current Dormitory and assigned to the designated Dormitory. At this time the Headmaster shall assign a new Teacher to any Dormitory that currently has no assigned Teacher. If the number of “against” votes exceeds or ties the number of “for” votes, then no change will occur.

Assign the Teacher No-Face to Bandersnatch and only Bandersnatch. The Headmaster shall choose a currently unassigned Teacher to assign to Ichneumon.

Changing the faculty supervisor rules to my understanding of how they were intended to work (one teacher per dorm). Get a new teacher for Ichneumon since Bandersnatch took No-Face.

Proposal: Bathroom Remodeling Remodeling

Passes 10-0. DK

Adminned at 21 Nov 2010 16:10:21 UTC

If the proposal “Bathroom Remodeling” passed, reword the first bullet point in the rule “Lavatory Studies” as follows:

On a 1-4, the Student may increment their Grade in that Subject by one; or, if their Grade in that Subject is currently Ungraded, set it to C.

Proposal: Bathroom Remodeling

Passes 10-0. DK

Adminned at 21 Nov 2010 16:07:52 UTC

Rename the rule “Keep yourself organized down there. Single file I said!” to “Lavatory Studies” and reword it as follows:

As a weekly action, if a Student is Free, they may lock themselves in a lavatory stall and experiment with advanced magic.  This is done by posting a comment in the GNDT in the form “Lavatory for [SUBJECT]: DICE6”, where [SUBJECT] is any of the legal academic Subjects.  Depending on the result of that die roll, the effects are as follows:

  • On a 1-4, the Student may increment their grade in that Subject by one.
  • On a 5, nothing happens.
  • On a 6, the Student has made a hideous mistake. If they are Alive or Zombie, they must set their Condition to Ghost; if they are a Ghost, they must set their grade in the attempted Subject to F.

If the proposal “A bunch of long-needed fixes” passed and renamed Rule 2.17, apply all of the above to the rule called “Restrooms” instead.

I considered adding a provision for Students to turn each other in to the Prefects upon getting caught within a certain time limit, but I think a 1-in-6 chance of disaster is a decent balance for the moment.

Proposal: Class Action Fairness Act

Times out and passes, 10-0. —Brendan

An Alive or Zombie Student is Free if they have not posted a comment on any currently Open Lesson, and are not on Detention.

An Alive or Zombie Student is Free if they have not posted a valid Class Action on any currently Open Lesson, and are not on Detention.

with the text

If a Student is Free, they may take one of the following Class Actions in that Lesson:

Replace the section of Rule 2.5, “Lessons”, that reads

When a Lesson ends, the Headmaster shall give the Teacher of the Lesson a Grudge against any Students who Disrupted the Lesson, and if any Students Brown Nosed during the Lesson, the Headmaster shall select the Student among them with the lowest number of Grudges held against them collectively by the faculty (resolving ties randomly) to become that Teacher’s Pet.

with the text

When a Lesson ends:

  • The Headmaster shall give the Teacher of the Lesson a Grudge against any Students who Disrupted the Lesson.
  • If any students posted comments that were not Class Actions, the Headmaster may, at their discretion, give the Teacher of the Lesson a Grudge against any or all of those Students as if they had Disrupted the Lesson.
  • If any Students Brown Nosed during the Lesson, the Headmaster shall select the Student among them with the lowest number of Grudges held against them collectively by the faculty (resolving ties randomly) to become that Teacher’s Pet.

Add a new sub-rule to Rule 2.5, entitled ‘Class Actions’, containing the following:

A Student may take a Class Action in an Open Lesson by posting a comment to that Lesson’s entry, describing their behaviour. A Class Action must begin with one of the following phrases:

  • ‘Studying’.
  • ‘Brown Nosing’.
  • ‘Distracting’.
  • ‘Disrupting’.

The first comment posted by a Student on an Open Lesson’s entry that matches this criteria shall count as that Student’s Class Action for the Lesson.

Also replace “Roll DICEy, where y is the number of spells in the ruleset; the spell described in rule 2.6.y in the ruleset is cast. The effect of the spell (regardless of who the spell would normally target) is applied to the targeted Student.” with:-

Let Z be the result of DICEY, where Y is the number of subrules to Rule 2.8; the Spell described in Rule 2.8.Z is cast. The caster of the spell and (if required) the targeted Student are both the Bullied Student. The inciter may make any other decisions required by the spell.

Add a new rule to the ruleset, entitled BATs:

The 26th of any month is Finals Day, on which the Students will sit their BAT (Baccalaureate of Advanced Thaumaturgy) exams.

The BATs start at midday on Finals Day. As soon as possible after midday, an exam post shall be made for each Subject by any Student, with a title in the following format: [SUBJECT] Exam with [TEACHER]. Each Exam post is open for 48 hours; if it has been open for more than 48 hours it becomes closed. A Student must successfully perform an exam action and make a comment to the open exam post detailing that action in order to pass each subject.

Valid exam actions are as follows:

* If a Student has an A+ or an A in a subject then their mere presence in an exam is sufficient to pass it, and that Student may pass the subject simply by making a comment to the exam post saying “Ace the exam.”
* If a Student has a B or a C in a subject then they must make a practical or theoretical demonstration of their competence in a subject. If such a Student casts a spell that requires that Student to meet a difficulty level in that Subject while the exam post is open then that constitutes a successful exam action. Alternatively, if that Student proposes a new Spell which requires the caster to meet a difficulty level in that Subject, and the proposal is enacted, then that also constitutes a successful exam action. Note that, while the Student in the second instance can perform the action and make a comment to the exam post detailing it while it is still open, it will not be clear whether the student has passed or failed the exam until well after the exam post closes.
* If a Student has a D or an E in a subject then they must become the Pet of the Teacher responsible for that subject, and then perform one of the actions detailed for students who have attained a B or C in that subject, in order to perform a successful exam action.
* If a Student has an F or Ungraded in a subject then they cannot pass the exam.

When a Student passes an exam, they may add BAT-[SUBJECT] to their list of Titles, where [SUBJECT] is the three-letter acronym denoting the subject in which they have passed their BAT. They must then reduce their Grade in that subject to Ungraded. When an exam post closes, any Students who have not passed (and who do not have pending proposals that would enable them to pass) have failed. A Student who fails an exam in a subject gets a Grudge with the Teacher responsible for that subject and must decrement their Grade in that subject, to a minimum of F.

A Student who has passed their BAT in all Subjects has achieved victory.

Add a new sub-rule to this rule, entitled Student Assistants:

A Student who has passed their BAT in a Subject and who does not have a current open Study Group may, as a weekly action, start a Study Group by making a new post entitled “Study Group: [SUBJECT]”. Provided that no more than five other Students have already done so, any Student who is Free can join the Study Group. A Student who joins a Study Group may once increment their grade in the relevant subject, to a maximum of C. If 6 Students have joined a Study Group then the Study Group closes. Joining a Study Group does not cause a Student to stop being Free.

Add a new sub-rule to rule 2.8, entitled Explosive Cramming:

Difficulty level: LAT 3, [x]0 (If [x] is LAT then the difficulty level for this spell is LAT 4)
Effect: The caster may increment their grade in [x]. The caster does not have to decrement their grade in any subject as a result of casting this spell.

Add the following to the end of the spell entitled “Revive”:

Upon casting this spell the caster must decrement their grade in all subjects.

Thanks, and sorry to be any trouble, I’m sure these things are quite simple. I just want to be sure.

If the Proposal titled “Need… the.. washroom…” passed, revert its effects.

If the Proposal titled “Hurry up, hurry up, there will be queues soon.” failed, this Proposal does nothing.

Rename the rule named “Keep yourself organized down there. Single file I said!” to “Restrooms”.

Add a new sub-rule, “Graffitis”, to that rule, as follows:

When a Student goes to the restroom, that student must announce a Subject and roll a DICE3, all in the same GNDT comment. One could not, for example, roll the dice and then announce the Subject.
* On a 1, a graffiti inspired him and increased his grade in that subject.
* On a 2, a graffiti gave him a wrong idea and decreased his grade in that subject.
* On a 3, nothing happens.

A Student may consume a sweet at any moment, using it’s raw power to put it’s corresponding Enchantement on a Target Student. If there is no associated Enchantement, or if the Target Student already is under the effect of the associated Enchantement, the sweet is lost but nothing else happens. A Student can choose to Enchant himself. The Enchantement are as follows:
Sweet: Sugar Lungorthin
Enchantement: OMGSUGARRUSH
Effect: The next time the Student goes to the bathroom and his grade would be incremented or decremented, repeat the increment or the decrement.

Sweet: Jenglot Baby
Enchantement: Jenglot Protection
Effect: The next time the Student goes to the bathroom and his grade would be decremented, nothing happens instead.

After any one of these Enchantement is triggered, it is removed from the Student’s Enchantements.

Students are encouraged to make a comment in the form of the following comments when rolling the dice in the GNDT: “Toilet! DIV DICE3” or “Toilet! BST DICE3 with Sugar Lungortin and Jenglot Baby”.

Greytyphoon had the original idea of Graffitis. As we work at the same place, he protoed it to me during the day. I told him the things I liked and didn’t liked, we worked on it, improving his idea until our point of views diverged. =P
He wanted to use spells, I didn’t want to involve magic. I wanted the Students to choose the Subject to affect while rolling the dice (symbolizing that they thinking about that class while “doing their business”), he wanted it to be mandatory, but changeable under certain conditions. As we couldn’t agree, he posted his version and now I’m posting mine. =)
Oh, and about the “revert it’s effect” part: I found it easier to do that than to change the parts that were different.

If the Proposal titled “Hurry up, hurry up, there will be queues soon.” failed, this Proposal does nothing.

Rename the rule named “Keep yourself organized down there. Single file I said!” to “Restrooms”.

Add this text at the end of that rule:

Students often write graffities in the restrooms, and how could people not look at them? As their main activity is their studies, the graffities are often about the main subjects they have seen, and one could grasp a difficult concept by looking at them… or not.

The current graffitied subject is Recreational Necromancy.

When a Student goes to the restroom, that student rolls a DICE3.
* On a 1, a graffiti inspired you and increased your grade in the current graffitied subject.
* On a 2, a graffiti gave you a wrong idea and decreased your grade in the current graffitied subject.
* On a 3, nothing happens.

Before rolling the dice, a Student may choose to eat a Sugar Lungorthin and / or a Jenglot Baby. Eating any sweet removes it from that Student’s Tuck. The sweets eaten in this way will only have an effect on the next trip to the restroom of the Student who ate them.
* If the student ate a Jenglot Baby and his grade would be decremented, nothing happens instead.
* If the student ate a Sugar Lungorthin and his grade would be incremented or decremented, repeat the increment or the decrement.

Students are encouraged to make a comment in the form of the following comments when rolling the dice in the GNDT: “Toilet! DIV DICE3” or “Toilet! BST DICE3 with Sugar Lungortin and Jenglot Baby”.

Add a new subrule to rule 2.8, Spells, entitled Graffitiae Maleficae:

Difficulty level: LAT(0)
Effect: Change the current graffitied subject to any other valid subject.
This spell does not decrement your grade in LAT.

In Rule 2.5, remove the “Disrupt” Class Action, and add the following:-

  • If a Student Disrupts an Intermediate or Advanced Lesson for which they have a Grade of E or higher, they may set their Grade in that Lesson’s Subject to ‘F’ and trigger that Lesson’s Disaster, as listed in the “Disasters” rule.
  • If a Student Distracts in an Intermediate or Advanced Lesson, they may decrement (to a minimum of “E”) the Grade in that Subject of up to 3 Students who have Studied most recently in the lesson. (This action counts as a Disruption.)

Enact a subrule of Rule 2.5, called “Disasters”:-

  • If a Disaster occurs in a Beginner’s Alchemy Lesson, noxious fumes fill the classroom. No further Class Actions may be taken in this Lesson.
  • If a Disaster occurs in a Wild Beasts Lesson, the subject matter runs amok. Any Alive Student who has taken a Class Action other than “Studying” in the Lesson becomes a Zombie.
  • If a Disaster occurs in a Recreational Necromancy Lesson, a greenish-white glow fills the room. Any Zombie or Ghost who has taken a Class Action in the Lesson becomes Alive.
  • If a Disaster occurs in a Divination Lesson, the Students get a harrowing glimpse of their future. Each Student who has taken a Class Action in the Lesson has their Grade reduced by one level in every Subject.
  • If a Disaster occurs in an Explosive Latin Lesson, a magical fight breaks out. The Alive Student with the lowest Grade in Explosive Latin who has taken a Class Action in the Lesson (if only one such Student exists) becomes a Zombie.
  • If a Disaster occurs in an Unbridled Evil Lesson, the pupils cheer. Any Alive Student who has taken a Class Action in the Lesson becomes a Zombie.

If a Disaster is triggered by a Disruption by a Student, that Student is immune to the effects of the Disaster.

In Rule 2.8.5, replace “decremented as a result of a Disruption Class Action” with:-

decremented as a result of a Disruption Class Action

We’re not seeing much disruption of classes. This makes basic Disruption cheaper (you don’t get an F, you just get a Grudge and lose the chance to have Studied in that Lesson), and adds lesson-specific Disasters (with the requirement that you need at least an E in the subject, to know what you’re doing). Dentention also becomes more of a threat, to stop a single player from causing too much damage.

Thus, create a rule called: “Keep yourself organized down there. Single file I said!” with the following text:

Using the restrooms is a weekly action and may only performed if the student is free.

In “Grades”, change

A Grade may be (in descending order) A+, A, B, C, D, E, F or Ungraded (”-”) and each Student’s Grade for each Subject starts as Ungraded.

to

A Grade may be (in descending order) A+, A, B, C, D, E or F. New Students start with an F in all grades.

Remove the last sentence of that rule and set all Ungraded grades to ‘F’ for each Student.

Why should never attending class make you better at casting spells than doing poorly in class?

Good morning everyone.

Wild Beasts Lesson: Intermediate Huntmastery with Master Heikregg

Everyone got a tight grip on their spectral leashes?  Remember, the hounds are intangible except for their teeth and they heed no mortal voice, so no point in shrieking at them to slow down.  Understood?  Excellent.  My watch says young Dalton’s head start is almost up.

She turned me into a newt!

And I’m not likely to get better, in the near term.  Idle me.

Transfer students

Thane Q and Tuzgai, who were with us from Malmo School of Druiding for a semester, have gone back home. I’m sure that all the staff and students wish them well.

Quorum is 10.

Prefect Reevaluation

In the wake of Undef’s early departure for the semester, let’s all congratulate Roujo on a new appointment to Prefect of Gothmog Hall.

Proposal: The Stuff of Life

Self-killed. —Brendan

Adminned at 18 Nov 2010 08:42:53 UTC

Add the following to the rule “Sweets:”

When a Student joins the game or de-idles, their Tuck is set to “1xJelly Dean.”

Should a Student’s Tuck ever be empty, that Student becomes a Ghost.  That Student’s Inventory is then set to “1xJelly Dean.”

Reword the rule “Last Body Standing” as follows:

Should there ever be exactly one Student whose condition is not Ghost, that Student achieves victory.

Should there ever be exactly one Student whose condition is Alive, while the school is in a time of Dark Ascendancy, that Student achieves victory.

Should there ever be exactly one Student whose condition is Zombie, while the school is in a time of Light Ascendancy, that Student achieves victory.

Upon enacting this proposal, set one random Alive Student to Zombie.

GNDT bug

Afraid I don’t have time to look into this now, as I’m about to head out, but for some reason entering a comment without changing any fields has started blanking out a user’s stats. Has anyone been modifying the GNDT code on the server recently, or is this a side effect of one of the variable names or values? I’ll take a look tomorrow - for now, if you’re rolling dice or making other GNDT comments, be sure to edit a variable (even if it’s to keep it as the same value) at the same time.

Dean Update

After the passage of “Om Nom Nom,” there are now 15 Loved Deans and 11 Loathed Deans, for a total of 26.  Should Students manage to accumulate 19 Loathed Deans without any more Loved Deans, the school will enter a time of Dark Ascendancy.  The Headmaster, as always, puts his trust in the law of averages.

Idle request

BlogNomic is awesome. It’s also very intense, and demands more brain bandwidth than I can spare at the moment. So, instead of doing a half-assed job of playing, I’d rather go idle. Have fun everyone!

Divination Lesson: Intermediate Psychography with No-Face

That’s it, embodied students:  feel your muscles relax, let your mind drift as the quill in your hand takes over.  Your incorporeal classmates will make their way to you and dictate the assignment as soon as they can.  They’re moving along quite quickly, so be patient and we should have plenty of time to administer the antidote before the bell is rung.

Proposal: Take Me To Your Leader

Reaches quorum 14 votes to 0. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 18 Nov 2010 06:44:30 UTC

Add a new subrule to Rule 2.1 “Student Handbook”

2.1.2 Student Leadership

Their exist ample opportunities for Students attending Professor Abalone’s School of Witchcraft and Miscellany to distinguish themselves and guide their peers. These positions include:

• Student Corpus President
• School Mascot
• Salutorian
• Leftenant of the Pep Squad
• University Mrrrgrannahh

A new Field, called Title, shall be created in the GNDT to track these positions. This field will contain the values (-, Student Corpus President, School Mascot, Salutorian, Leftenant of the Pep Squad, and University Mrrrgrannahh). By default, all Students will have their value in the Title field set to “-“.

I’d like to continue to nurture the idea of inter-school political squabbling as a means of achieving victory and advantage. More titles of prestige, I feel is a good way to do that. At present, this proposal is only creating positions, but isn’t covering how to earn them or the advantage to having them. As I figure that out, well, the rule can be amended. Hopefully though, this will turn some gears in the community head and we can get all collaborative on this business.

Proposal: The Thing With Forty Eyes

Add a new subrule to Rule 2.8 “Spells”

Invocatio Tractus: Thriller Night
Difficulty Level RNY: 75 DIV: 10 LAT: 15
Effect: If this spell is successfully cast, the casting Student wins the game as he or she leads the bulk of the student body in a massively choreographed ritual dance that will usurp the Headmaster’s powers. Thriller may only be cast by a Student whose condition is “Alive” and may only be supported by any Student whose condition is “Zombie” although any such Student may offer support regardless of the Dormitory that Student lives in.

Dancemancy, or Invocatio Tractus, is some of the post powerful ritual magic there is, and this particular spell is one of the most potent and difficult to execute. It requires precision timing, an incredible grasp of spatial relations, fantastic costumes, and a core of talented zombie dancers.

(I really couldn’t help myself here, even if this spell gets shot down, it needed to be proposed.)

Proposal: Hard lads

Adminned at 17 Nov 2010 15:27:05 UTC

Add a new rule to the ruleset, entitled The Bullies:

Blodger, Scraggs and Venter are, collectively, the school Bullies. The effect that they have on the game depends on the current Ascendancy.

Add the following as sub-rules to the newly created rule, with the first entitled During Light Ascendancy and the second entitled During Dark Ascendancy:

During Light Ascendancy, the bullies’ fear of punishment and the Headmaster limits their capacity for mischief. Once, within 24 hours of a Student (“the Nerd”) carrying out Chores or becoming a Teacher’s Pet, any other Student may make a Bullying roll by posting “Bullying: DICE2” in the GNDT. If the result is a 1, then the Bullies attack the Nerd, stealing all of their sweets - their Tuck is set to -.

During Dark Ascendancy, the vicious natures of the Bullies become more apparent. As a weekly action, and only if no Student has done so within the preceding seven days, whichever Student has most recently Channelled Lord Marvolo may incite the bullies.

To do so, they must make an Incitement roll to the GNDT by posting “Incitement: DICEx DICE10”, where x is the number of Students whose condition is Alive. The result of the DICEx roll determines which Student is targeted by the Incitement and corresponds to the order in which Student names are listed in the GNDT. The result of the DICE10 determines the outcome of the incitement.

On a roll of 1, the targeted Student is wedgied to death and becomes a Zombie.
On a roll of 2, the targeted Student is conventionally bullied and their Tuck is set to -.
On a roll of 3 or 4, the targeted Student fights the bullies off with magic; their LAT is incremented.
If the result anything from 5 to 9, the Student successfully hides from the bullies. There is no effect.
On a roll of 10, the Bullies’ manage enough articulation to actually cast a spell. Roll DICEy, where y is the number of spells in the ruleset; the spell described in rule 2.6.y in the ruleset is cast. The effect of the spell (regardless of who the spell would normally target) is applied to the targeted Student.

If Proposal: Incentive/Disincentive failed, then remove the last effect on the above list and change the text “5 to 9” to “5 to 10”.

Add the following to the end of the spell description for Guardian Toothfish:

If a Student with a Toothfish Enchantment would be the target of a Bullying or Incitement action, then nothing happens and they instead lose one Toothfish Enchantment.

Unbridled Evil Lesson: Basic Puppy Eating with Lord Malvolo

BARHAH!

...

Right, class, well. Now that I have gained control of this eager puppet, I suggest that we get started. You will each find in front of you a small adorable puppy. First, I suggest that you give it a name and ascribe to it some anthropomorphic characteristics; that will make it all the more delicious when you consume it utterly. For reference, mine is called “Headmaster”. Oh… oh dear, Thane Q, please do try to eat with your mouth closed. We may be evil, but there’s no need to be uncouth.

Explosive Latin Lesson: Intermediate Thaumadirgy with Madame Bariconder

That’s it, sopranos to my right, baritones to the left.  Please take one scroll of lyrics and pass the rest along.  Remember, this will be a solemn occasion in the chapel, so dress shoes and slacks under your choir robes.  We have a responsibility to show our respect for the late Josh and William.  That means you, William.  You as well, Josh.

Add the following to the list of actions that a Dormitory may choose after winning a round of Nomich, in the rule “Nomich:”

  • Pick any Subject, and increment the grade in that Subject by one for all Students in the winning Domitory
Reword the effects of the rule “Marvolo’s Challenge” to the following:
If the school is in a time of Dark Ascendancy, the caster may choose to do any or all of the following:
  • Change one Alive Student to Zombie
  • Change one Zombie Student to Alive
  • Change one Alive or Zombie Student to Ghost

If the school is in a time of Light Ascendancy, there is an epic clash between Lord Marvolo and the Headmaster; A randomly chosen Zombie student becomes Alive, a random Alive student becomes a Zombie, a random non-Ghost Student becomes a Ghost, and the Student who cast this spell has his UNE grade set to F.

No Nomich at all this week?  Also, a win condition for evil students but not good ones?

After completing a Spell, the Caster must decrement his or her Grade in any Subjects except Explosive Latin (LAT) for which that Spell had a Difficulty Level.

Upon enactment of this proposal the Headmaster must open an explosive latin lesson, as soon as it is convenient.
To all spells existing at the time when the proposal is enacted which have no difficulty in LAT, add a difficulty level of -3 in LAT.

Add the following as a subrule to rule 2.1, Student Handbook, entitled Incorporeality:

A Student whose Condition is Ghost may not achieve or declare victory. Where contradictory, this rule supersedes all other rules.

At the moment, ghosts have it made - their ability to attend multiple classes will see them gallop ahead in spell power. The conflict seems to be between alive and zombie students, however, meaning that not only do ghosts have the advantage in lessons but they also don’t have the distracting internecine conflict, enjoying instead a kind of kingmaker status. While a ghost-specific VC is plausible, it wouldn’t erode their advantages, and if we’re going to limit victory to the agitant classes then we should do so early and openly. Thus, we formalise the arrangement. We have revival mechanisms, though, so it’s not like being a ghost is a dead end.

Explosive Latin is the language of spellcasting. Whenever a Student casts a Spell, they must roll DICE10 in the GNDT and add the Spell Power that student has in LAT to the result. If the result is a 1, 2 or 3 then an accident occurs.

If an accident occurs, the spell fails but the Student does not have to decrement their Grade. Instead they may increment their grade in LAT and, if they are Alive, set their Condition to either Zombie or Ghost (their choice).

Explosive Latin should be a bit more explosive.

Effect: Double the amount of Loathed Deans possessed by the targeted Student.

Add a subrule to the rule “Spells” with the title “Hungry Homunculus”

Add a new rule, entitled Ascendancy:

Professor Abalone’s School of Witchcraft and Miscellany goes through cycles of Light Ascendancy, when the Headmaster and Alive Students have the upper hand, and Dark Ascendancy, where Lord Marvolo and the Zombie Students are more powerful.  The school is normally considered to be in a time of Light Ascendancy.  While the number of Loathed Deans held by all Students is at least twice the number of Loved Deans held by all Students, and the total number of all Deans is greater than 25, the school is considered to be in a time of Dark Ascendancy.

Add a new teacher to the Teachers list, called Lord Marvolo. His field is set to Unbridled Evil, his condition is Zombie, his Pet is set to “All Zombie students” and his Grudge is set to “All Alive students”.

Add a new teacher to the Teachers list, called The Headmaster.  His condition is Ghost, his Field is “All Subjects,” and his Pet is set to “All Alive students.”

Add a new sub-rule to the rule “Teachers,” entitled Lord Marvolo:

Lord Marvolo is a Teacher. Lord Marvolo’s Grudges and Pets are not affected by any rule except this one. Lord Marvolo always has a Grudge against all Students whose condition is Alive. All Students who are Zombies are always Lord Marvolo’s Pet.  However, when considering whether a Student is the subject of a Grudge by every Teacher for the purposes of Detention, Lord Marvolo is not counted unless the school is in a time of Dark Ascendancy.

As a weekly action, and only if no other Student has done so within the preceding five days, a Zombie Student may Channel Lord Marvolo by callling a Lesson under the same rules as regular Lessons.  However, the Teacher of the Lesson must be Lord Marvolo, and the Subject must be Unbridled Evil.  Students who are Alive may not Study in such Lessons, and Students who are Zombies may not Disrupt them.

Replace the first sentence of the rule “Grades” with the following:

Each Student has a Grade in each of the main Subjects: Beginner’s Alchemy (ALC), Wild Beasts (BST), Recreational Necromancy (RNY), Divination (DIV), Explosive Latin (LAT), and Unbridled Evil (UNE).

I liked where this was going, except for the part where I lost my job.

I disagree. The proposal explicitly removed lingering effects, but didn’t award any replacement Enchantments. Giving out a couple of free Enchantments might have been fair to these two players (if unfair to anyone who read the rule closely and chose not to cast a Toothfish), but it simply wasn’t legal under the ruleset we’re playing by.

If a Student is in Detention for three weeks without interruption then they become a Ghost.

So to get in, you get snitched on or get a grudge from every teacher; to get out, you have to do chores for your dorm’s teacher, and if you got in because of grudges you have to wait at least a week first.

Why, Binns!  How convenient.

Proposal: Snitchmich Fixmix

Passes 11-0. —Brendan

Adminned at 13 Nov 2010 09:39:55 UTC

If the proposal “The Golden Snitch” passed, replace the second paragraph of the rule “Snitching” with the following:

If two or more Students correctly Snitch on the same Student for the same Lesson, then the one who Snitched first gets to be Teacher’s Pet, but the one who Snitched last becomes the subject of a Grudge from the Lesson’s Teacher when the Lesson is Ended.

If the proposal “The Golden Snitch” passed, add the following subrule to the rule “Lessons,” with the title “Chores”:

If a Student is on Detention, they may choose to carry out Chores by posting a comment to this effect in an Open Lesson by the Teacher assigned to their Dormitory.  If they do so, when that Lesson ends, if the Student is not the subject of a Grudge by every Teacher, that Student is no longer on Detention.

Delete the first two words from the sentence in the rule “Nomich” that reads as follows: “If a Once a legal play has been made by both Dormitories, all cards in those plays are removed from the hands of the Dormitories involved.”

In the rule “Nomich,” replace the sentence “A Dormitory who wins a game of Nomich may perform one of the two following actions:” and the bulleted list immediately following it with the text:

A Dormitory who wins a game of Nomich may perform one of the following actions:

  • Add a new rule to the Nomich ruleset by PMing it to the Headmaster
  • Change the Condition of one Student of the opposing Dormitory to Ghost or Zombie
  • Choose a Teacher and a Student and, if that Teacher has a Grudge against that Student, remove that Grudge

The Headmaster shall interpret the first private message specifying one of these actions from a Prefect of the winning Dormitory to be that Dormitory’s choice.

Replace the last paragraph of the rule “Nomich” with the following:

The Headmaster shall appraise any proposed addition to the Nomich Ruleset and may choose to accept or reject it. Any rule thus rejected is lost and the Dormitory who proposed it may not undertake another winning action.

I know the first Nomich fix is close to the “admin-correctable typo” line, but eh.

To Rule 2.1 (Student Handbook), add:-

Each Student may have a number of Enchantments affecting them, listed in a GNDT field “Enchantments” and separated by commas. If an Enchantment includes a number, that number is its Force. Students begin with no Enchantments.

Reword the effect of Rule 2.8.3 (Cartomancy) to:-

The caster gains a “Cartomancy X” Enchantment, where X is the total Spell Power in Divination of all participating Students (including the caster). When a Student makes a Nomich play, they may remove a Cartomancy Enchantment from their Enchantments to add a single card of any suit to that play, with a face value up to the Enchantment’s Force. This card must be denoted by [square brackets] and may not have a face value greater than K (13).

Reword the effect of Rule 2.8.5 (Guardian Toothfish) to:-

The caster gains a “Toothfish” Enchantment. If a Student with a Toothfish Enchantment would have their Grade in a Subject decremented as a result of a Disruption Class Action, that Grade is not decremented and they instead lose one Toothfish Enchantment.

Destroy any lingering “the next time the caster” effects created by the previous version of these rules.

Replacing the floaty “next time something happens, something else happens, make sure to remember this” spell effects with solid gamestate, so that we can see what’s going on (and understand what happens when a spell is reworded after being cast).

Proposal: Nomich rules kickstart

Passes 12-1. New rules are in effect.—Brendan

Adminned at 13 Nov 2010 08:05:54 UTC

As soon as is practical, the Headmaster shall add one rule of each of the the following formats to the Nomich ruleset:

A card with a value of Y or Z is a Bonus Card.  A play receives 3 points for each Bonus Card in it.

, where Y and Z are numbers in the 2-10 range.

Any play containing the Big Bonus Card X receives 4 points

, where X is replaced by a single Nomich card that is not a Bonus Card under the previous rule.

Recreational Necromancy Lesson:  Advanced Autoautopsy with Mr. Cruik

Please try to keep your hand steady while performing the Y-incision, Binns, you’re setting the example for the rest of the class here.  I know it’s a bit stomach-turning, so if necessary you can just remove your stomach for the moment and set it aside.  Can anyone tell me how I know Binns has had his jabs?

Request for play

I, Ironwrench of Cascadia,  hereby petition the dynasty for entry as a player.

Resident Scholars

As you know, students, I’ve been concerned of late with your overall academic progress this term.  In the interest of maintaining proper study habits and in accordance with a newly unearthed section of the student handbook, I’ve assigned faculty advisors to the various Dormitories, as follows:  Madame Bariconder to Gothmog, No-Face to Ichneumon, Master Heikregg to Penanggalan, and Mr. Cruik to Bandersnatch.  This was all done randomly, so stop looking so pale and sweaty, Hepworth.  We’ll also be increasing the pace of Lessons in the near future.

Proposal: Behind the Broomstick Shed

Passes 12-1.—Brendan

Adminned at 13 Nov 2010 08:02:10 UTC

To Rule 2.8 (Spells), add:-

Unsupervised spellcasting is a stressful and often dangerous experience. After completing a Spell, the Caster must decrement his or her Grade in any Subjects for which that Spell had a Difficulty Level.

I think we’re going to need a small drawback to spellcasting, as more spells become available - it shouldn’t just be about picking the best, free spell for your weekly limit. (I imagine we’ll see a lot of might-as-well-cast-this Toothfish manifesting every Sunday evening.)

Proposal: Because I don’t think I can legally just do this

Passes 14-0. —Brendan

Adminned at 13 Nov 2010 08:00:52 UTC

Edit the Teachers wiki page to set Madame Bariconder’s Field to Explosive Latin, Master Heikregg’s Field to Wild Beasts, No-Face’s Field to Divination, and M. Hrrrggh’s Field to Alchemy.

Protosal: Nomich, once again

Ok, I’m a little tired of little wordings that fail my Nomich proposals.

I’ll let everyone comment and edit it accordingly until a few days pass, then I’ll propose it officially. Nomich needs the improvement, as so many of you said.

The current version is:

Nomich is a sport played by Students. Students who belong to the same Dormitory are always on the same team.

Nomich is played with an ordinary deck of 52 cards. At all times when not playing a game of Nomich, each Dormitory should be holding seven cards. The cards held by each Dormitory should be kept a secret to all other Dormitories and should be tracked by the Headmaster. If, any any time, a Dormitory is holding less than seven cards and is not playing a Nomich, the Headmaster should randomly assign them enough cards that they have a hand of seven, and should then send a private message to all members of that Dormitory telling them the composition of their new hand. The Headmaster must ensure that the same card is not being held by more than one Dormitory at any given time.

Any member of a Dormitory may challenge another Dormitory to a match of Nomich by making a post to that effect. This Student is known as the “Challenger”. His dormitory is known as the “Challenging team”.
A challenge can only be levelled:
- On a Saturday;
- By a Student whose condition is “Alive”
- By a Student who is not in Detention;
- By a member of a Dormitory that has not already played a match of Nomich that day and that is not already playing a match of Nomich;
- Against a Dormitory that contains at least one Student that could legally answer at the time of the challenge, and;
- Against a Dormitory that has not already played a match of Nomich that day and that is not already playing a match of Nomich.

The challenge shall be immediately followed by a comment in the same thread, made by the Challenger, containing his play. A play is a sequence of cards, of any size or composition, from his Dormitory’s hand.

A Dormitory is obliged to accept the first such challenge levelled against it on a Saturday. This dormitory is known as the “Defending team”. One of the members of the Defending team should post a play as a comment in the Challenge thread. This Student is known as the “Defender”. The first valid play posted by the Defending team in a challenge thread is the one that is scored for that match.
A challenge can only be accepted:
- Less than 24 hours after the challenge is posted
- By a Student whose condition is “Alive”.
- By a Student who is not in Detention.
After 24 hours, if the Defending team did not post a valid play on a Challenge, the Challenger must choose the Defender among the students that could have posted a play at the time of the challenge, and this Student counts has having posted an empty play (a play that contains no cards) for the Defending Team.

Once a legal play has been made by both Dormitories, all cards in those plays are removed from the hands of the Dormitories involved. The Headmaster will them refill both hands randomly, as described in the beginning of this rule.

The Dormitory whose play scores highest wins the match. It becomes the “Winning team”, and the other dormitory becomes the “Losing team”. The Student who posted the scoring play for the Winning Team is the Winner, and the Student who posted the scoring play for the Losing team is the Loser. If both Dormitories in a match have the same score, the Headmaster shall randomly choose one of them as the winner of the match.

The score value of any play is adjudged according to the Nomich Ruleset. The Nomich Ruleset is secret and should be known in its entirety only to the Headmaster. The only public rules are listed as subrules to this one.

At the end of each Sunday, or as soon as possible thereafter, the Headmaster should indicate in the Challenge thread which Dormitory won and what each play scored.
A Dormitory who wins a game of Nomich may perform one of the following actions:
- Add a new rule to the Nomich ruleset by PMing it to the Headmaster; or
- Change the Condition of one Student of the Losing Team to Ghost or Zombie; or
- Choose a Teacher and a Student and, if that Teacher has a Grudge against that Student, remove that Grudge; or
- Choose two Teachers and if any or both these teachers have a Grudge against the Winner, remove that/those Grudge(s).

If the first action is undertaken, the Headmaster must appraise the new rule, and may reject it if it contradicts another rule or if it offers an unfair and destabilising advantage to any Dormitory at the expense of any other Dormitory. The Headmaster’s judgement on this matter is final. Any rule thus rejected is lost and the Dormitory who proposed it may not undertake another winners’ action.

List of issues noted in the comments that still require attention:
—-

Yes, I will repropose it until the rules change. I know it only failed the last two times because of small issues, that’s why I’m making a protosal. We’ll work around them without spamming Proposals. ^^

Proposal: The Golden Snitch

Times out and passes, 9-1.—Brendan

Adminned at 13 Nov 2010 07:47:35 UTC

Add a new sub-rule to rule 2.6, entitled Snitching:

As a weekly action, a Student may Snitch by PMing the Headmaster with the name of a lesson that has not ended and the name of a student who they suspect will attempt to disrupt that lesson. If the named student subsequently does disrupt that lesson, then the Snitching student becomes the Teacher’s Pet of the teacher of the affected lesson, and the disruptive student gets Detention.

If two or more Students Snitch on the same student for the same class, then the one who Snitched first gets to be Teacher’s Pet.

If the majority of EVCs on this proposal contain the phrase “Build a better mousetrap”, the remainder of this proposal does nothing. Otherwise, add a new rule to the ruleset entitled Detention:

A student is considered to be in Detention for exactly one week from the moment of the action that caused them to be put in Detention in the first place. If a Student performs an action that would put them in Detention while they are already in Detention then one week is added to the total time that they must spend in Detention. If a Student is in Detention for three weeks without interruption then they become a Ghost.

To do: a disincentive to snitching, which at the moment is a bit of a “well, duh” choice. Don’t want Brendan to get bombarded.

Proposal: Studying is dangerous, but playing around with the equipment is even more!

Add the following sub-rule, entitled “Accidents”, to rule 2.5 “Lessons”.

When a Lesson ends the Headmaster must determine if there was an Accident during the Lesson and if so what the effects are. If at least 8 students Studied in the Lesson there is a 50% chance of an Accident occurring. If less than 8 but more than 4 Students Studied there is a 30% chance of an Accident occurring. If less than 4 Students Studied there is no chance of an accident occurring.

When an Accident occurs the Headmaster must role a DICE3 to determine how many Students were affected and then randomly select the determined amount of Students from a list of all Students who interupted in the Lesson in where the Accident occurs. If more Students were affected than interrupted the lesson the Headmaster randomly selects the remaining Students from the Students studying in that lesson.
For each student the Headmaster shall role a DICE2. If the result of this final roll is a 1 then the Student in question has only minor injuries and they are not significantly effected by the accident. If the result of the final roll is a 2 then the Student’s condition is set to Zombie if that student was alive and is set to ghost if that student was a Zombie. Affected Students will not increases their marks for that lesson, but will also not be allowed to decrement the marks of other Students.

Whenever an Accident occurs the Headmaster shall create a Post in which the effects of the accident are detailed, and then update the GDNT to reflect any changes to the condition of effected Students.

Borrowing Fuzzylogic nice proposal. Liked it - perhaps this will pass. Interrupting lessons causes accidents, so the interrupters will be affected most. This will also generate some fluctuation and makes a gost revival mechanism worthful.

Add the following as a subrule to the rule “Spells,” with the title “Autodecapitatum”:

Difficulty Level: RNY 0
Effect:  Set the caster’s Alive status to “Zombie” or “Ghost.

Add a new subrule to the rule “Spells”.  Call it “Transmute Card” and give it the following text:

Difficulty Level: DIV 1, ALC 1
Effect:If the target Nomich card is held by a Dormitory, the Headmaster shall replace it with a random other legal card.  If the target Nomich card is also in a play, the Headmaster post the result in a comment to the challenge containing that play, and the play is amended to use the new card in place of the targetted one.

In the rule “Lessons”, change the text

up to 3 Students who have Studied most recently in the lesson

to

up to 3 Students who have Studied or Brown-Nosed in the lesson, including the one who did so most recently (if any).

*Can now attack Brown-Nosing students
*Can now chose who to disrupt (but only 2 unless you time the disruption right)

With Fraying Sashes

Congratulations to Bucky, Undef, Darknight, Kevan, Purplebeard, William, FuzzyLogic and MacGeorge, newly appointed Prefects.  These were tough decisions, not least because most Students outside Gothmog have abysmal Spell Power.  Shape up, other houses.

Back to school, hooray!

Wild Beasts Lesson:  Basic Moonbeast Habitat with Master Heikregg

Step lively, please, and keep an eye to the ground for fresh spoor.  The Moonbeast is a longtime resident of our campus, and is of course a well-known hazard to our more appetizing students, but he is believed to be nocturnal, as no one has ever spotted him during classtime hours.  Of course, we can’t prove that, as we’ve never successfully tracked him to his lair—unless one of you sharp-eyed young people manages that today!  Like you, young Hepworth.  Bright-eyed and bushy-tailed!  Sleep deeply last night?  Tell me, do you usually leave your window open?

Actually a valid lesson this time.

Proposal: Student, remove yourself from the class.

In rule 2.5 Lessons, replace this text:

and decrement the Grade in that Subject of every other Student who has already commented on the blog post (to a minimum of “E”).

With the following:

and decrement (to a minimum of “E”) the Grade in that Subject of up to 3 Students who have Studied most recently in the lesson. A student’s Grade will be decremented no more than once in each Class.

Why study early in a lesson, when surely you will be disrupted?

If rule 2.6 “Teachers” has a subrule 2.6.2 “Resident Scholar” replace it with the following:

2.6.2 Resident Scholar. Each dormitory is overseen by one of the full time faculty. If a dormitory currently has no Teacher assigned to it, then the Headmaster shall randomly assign a Teacher to that dormitory. If a Teacher is assigned to a dormitory, then that information will be noted in the Teacher’s profile on the wiki.

Students within a dormitory may attempt to request a change in the Teacher assigned to their dormitory. As a weekly action, a student may publish a post entitled “Request for Change of Faculty Supervisor” and within which they will nominate a new Teacher, designate a Dormitory (Which must be the Dormitory the posting student resides in) and offer a reason as to why they would like a change to occur.

Resolution of the Request for Change of Faculty Supervisor is handled in the following fashion:
• Students who reside within the Dormitory may vote ‘for’ or ‘against’ the change by commenting on the post.
• If the designated Faculty Member is currently overseeing another Dormitory, residents of that Dormitory may vote ‘for’ or ‘against’ the change by commenting on the post.
• The Headmaster may vote ‘for’ or ‘against’ the change by commenting on the post and his vote shall be counted twice.
• For each Grudge the Teacher holds against a Student in the requesting Student’s dormitory, add a vote of ‘against’ towards the Request for Change of Faculty Supervisor. These votes will be tallied by the posting Student and posted as a comment. Failure to do so within 48 hours of the original post will result in the Request failing.
• If the designated Teacher is currently overseeing another Dormitory, for each Grudge he or she holds against a student in the Dormitory he or she is currently overseeing, add a vote of “for” towards the Request for Change of Faculty Supervisor. These votes will be tallied by the posting Student and posted as a comment. Failure to do so within 48 hours of the original post will result in the Request failing.
•After a 48 hour period, if the number of “for” votes exceeds the number of “against” votes, then the designated Teacher will be assigned to the designated Dormitory. If the number of “against” votes exceeds or ties the number of “for” votes, then no change will occur.

Maybe second time is the charm.

Proposal: Remain Seated

Reached quorum 13 votes to 0. Enacted by Kevan.

Rename Rule 2.2 to “Free Time”, and reword it to:-

An Alive or Zombie Student is Free if they have not posted a comment on any currently Open Lesson, and are not on Detention.

A Ghost Student is Free if they are not on Detention.

In Rule 2.5 (Lessons), replace “If a Student has not yet commented on the post and is not on Detention, they may take one of the following Class Actions by posting a comment on this entry describing their behaviour:-” with:-

If a Student is Free and has not yet posted a comment in a particular Open Lesson, they may take one of the following Class Actions in that Lesson, by posting a comment on the Lesson’s entry, describing their behaviour:-

Before “If a Lesson post is more than 24 hours old”, add:-

Lessons can either be Open or Ended, and begin as Open.

And remove “Once a Lesson is over, Students may not take the actions listed in this rule within that Lesson.”

Encouraging multiple lessons to run at the same time, but with the restriction that Students can only attend one class at a time. Unless they’re a ghost.

(I’ll overwrite Rule 2.2 while I’m here, since it’s interactingly confusingly with the Lesson rules.)

Proposal: Facial vandalism

Add to Rule 2.8 “Spells”

2.8.2 Facial vandalism
Difficulty level: RNY: 2; ALC: 0
Effect:  Target a Student or a Teacher. Such individual will be refered to as Y. Such Y will have written on their face “[X]”. X is a text, up to 30 characters, of the casters choice. When a Y has something written on their face, on every comment or proposal they make, the last line of text in that proposal or comment must be “[X] is written on Z’s face” were Z is the name of the individual with the X written on their face.

It’s to “tag” people and have some fun.

Professor Abalone’s School of Witchcraft and Miscellany goes through cycles of Light Ascendancy, when the Headmaster and Alive Students have the upper hand, and Dark Ascendancy, where Lord Marvolo and the Zombie Students are more powerful. The School is currently in a time of Light Ascendancy; if there is a rule entitled Dark Ascendancy, it and all of its sub-rules have no effect.

Add a new teacher to the Teachers list, called Lord Marvolo. His field is set to Unbridled Evil, his condition is Zombie, his Pet is set to “All Zombie students” and his Grudge is set to “All Alive students”.

Add a new sub-rule to rule 2.6, entitled Lord Marvolo:

Lord Marvolo is a Teacher. Lord Marvolo’s Grudges and Pets are not affected by any rule except this one. Lord Marvolo always has a Grudge against all Students whose condition is Alive. All Students who are Zombies are always Lord Marvolo’s Pet.

As a weekly action, and only if no other Student has done so within the preceding five days, a Zombie Student may Channel Lord Marvolo by making a post entitled “Channelling Lord Marvolo”. That Student is then considered to be Lord Marvolo until they either cease to be a Zombie or another Student performs the same action.

Add the following to the end of rule 2.4:

Unbridled Evil is also a subject, but Students may never possess a grade in it.

Add the following as a sub-rule to rule 2.5, entitled Lessons in Evil:

As a weekly action, Lord Marvolo may call an Evil Lesson, by posting a blog entry with the subject “Evil Lesson: Unbridled Evil with Lord Malvolo”. If a Student has not yet commented on the post and is not on Detention, that Student may choose to Study or Disrupt the lesson; however, students who are Alive may not study the lesson, and Students who are Zombies may not disrupt the lesson.

If the number of Students who Study an Evil Lesson is strictly greater than the number of Students who Disrupt it then any Student may change the last sentence of the rule entitled “Ascendancy” to read:

The School is currently in a time of Dark Ascendancy.

Add a new rule, entitled Dark Ascendancy:

Any Student may, at any time, chance all instances of the phrase “the Headmaster” in the ruleset to “Lord Malvolo” with an asterisk after it, except in this rule or subrules to this rule.

Add a subrule to this rule, entitled Return of the Light:

If ever a Student successfully returns the School to a state of Light Ascendancy, that Student must replace all instances of the phrase “Lord Malvolo” that have an asterisk after it with “the Headmaster”. They must then change the last sentence of the rule entitled “Ascendancy” to read:

The School is currently in a time of Light Ascendancy; if there is a rule entitled Dark Ascendancy, it and all of its sub-rules have no effect.

Proposal: Guess my clock broke

Reaches quorum, 14-0. Josh

Adminned at 10 Nov 2010 11:05:14 UTC

If the Proposal titled “No late night gaming” failed, this Proposal does nothing.

In the rule “Nomich” remove the following line:

No Student may issue a Nomich Challenge between 20:00:00 UTC and 00:00:00 UTC.

Since the timing issue was fixed earlier lol.

Proposal: No late night gaming

Reaches quorum, 13-0. Josh

Adminned at 10 Nov 2010 11:03:47 UTC

In the Rule “Nomich”, to the end of the following,

Any member of a Dormitory may challenge another Dormitory to a match of Nomich by making a post to that effect. A Dormitory is obliged to accept the first such challenge levelled against it on a Saturday. Each Dormitory may play no more than one match of Nomich per day, and a Dormitory may not make a challenge if it is playing a match of Nomich or has already played a match of Nomich that day; nor can a challenge be levelled against a Dormitory that is playing or has played a match of Nomich that day.

add,

No Student may issue a Nomich Challenge between 20:00:00 UTC and 00:00:00 UTC. A Student in Detention can not issue or respond to a Nomich Challenge.

If the Proposal titled “Nomich Jr, the second: not quite so new and improved” passed, instead add it to the end of the following,

Any member of a Dormitory, whose condition must be “Alive”, may challenge another Dormitory to a match of Nomich by making a post to that effect. This Student is known as the “Challenger”. His dormitory is known as the “Challenging team”.

Patching up any chance of somone deciding to issue a challange late Saturday night. School’s like this need curfews after all. And trouble makers shouldn’t be allowed to play during their detentions.

FYI: My keypad has been acting up lately so there might be some spelling mistakes.

Proposal: Everything We Taught You Last Year Was Wrong

Reaches quorum, 15-1. Josh

Adminned at 10 Nov 2010 10:34:29 UTC

Replace the first paragraph of Rule 2.5 (Lessons) with:-

As a daily action, the Headmaster may call a Lesson by posting a blog entry with the subject “[SUBJECT] Lesson: [LEVEL] [SPECIALISATION] with [TEACHER]”, where [SUBJECT] is a Subject, [LEVEL] is an optional adjective of either “Basic”, “Intermediary” or “Advanced” (if omitted, the Lesson is counted as Intermediate), [SPECIALISATION] is any word or phrase and [TEACHER] is the Teacher who will give the Lesson. An Advanced Lesson may only be given by a Teacher who has that Subject as their Field.

If a Student has not yet commented on the post and is not on Detention, they may take one of the following Class Actions by posting a comment on this entry describing their behaviour:-

Remove the first Class Action from the bulleted list in Rule 2.5, and add two new items in its place:-

  • If a Student Studies in a Basic or Intermediate Lesson, they may either set their Grade in that Lesson’s Subject to ‘C’, or increment their current Grade in that Lesson’s Subject.
  • If a Student Studies in an Advanced Lesson, they may either set their Grade in that Lesson’s Subject to ‘E’, or (if their Grade is D or higher) raise their current Grade in that Lesson’s Subject by two levels.

And replace “If a Student Disrupts a Lesson” with “If a Student Disrupts an Intermediate or Advanced Lesson”.

To the first paragraph of Rule 2.4 (Grades), add:-

If a Grade would be incremented above A+, it remains A+; if it would be decremented below F, it remains F.

Defining three levels of Lesson - Intermediate act as normal, Basic ones are too simple to be Disrupted, and Advanced classes are harder to get started in but double the rate of progress.

Also allowing Students to Brown-Nose without having an A+ - the fact you have to give up an entire Lesson’s Study bonus seems price enough, and you could easily be wasting your time if a better Student decided to out-Nose you in response.

Proposal: No more multi-purpose teachers

Antiquorums, 2-12. Josh

Adminned at 10 Nov 2010 10:33:34 UTC

If the Proposal titled “Stop Slouching, Boy” failed, this Proposal does nothing.

Set Madame Bariconder’s Field to “Explosive Latin”.
Set Master Heikregg’s Field to “Beginners Alchemy”.
Set No-Face’s Field to “Divination”.
Set M. Hrrrggh’s Field to “Wild Beasts”.

In rule 2.5 (“Lessons”), after the text:

As a daily Action, the Headmaster may call a Lesson by posting a blog entry with the subject “[SUBJECT] Lesson: [SPECIALISATION] with [TEACHER]”, where [SUBJECT] is a Subject, [SPECIALISATION] is any word or phrase and [TEACHER] is the Teacher who will give the Lesson.

Add:

The Subject of the Lesson must match the Teacher’s Field.

If more than half of the EVCs on this proposal contain the word “Awesome”, set Greytyphoon’s grade in Recreational Necromancy to A+.

Proposal: Prefective

Passes 11-4.—Brendan

Adminned at 10 Nov 2010 10:26:30 UTC

Create a new rule, “Prefects,” with the following text:

At most two Students in each Dormitory are Prefects.  This status is tracked in the GNDT and, by default, Students are not Prefects.

At any time, the Headmaster may remove Prefect status from any or all Students belonging to a given Dormitory, then assign Prefect status to up to two Students in that Dormitory who are not in Detention and who have or are tied for the highest or second-highest combined total Spell Power in all subjects.

In the rule “Nomich,” replace the sentence “If, any any time, a Dormitory is holding less than seven cards and is not playing a Nomich, the Headmaster should assign them enough cards that they have a hand of seven, and should then send a private message to all members of that Dormitory telling them the composition of their new hand.” with

If, at any time, a Dormitory is holding less than seven cards and is not playing a Nomich, the Headmaster should assign them enough cards that they have a hand of seven, and should then send a private message to all prefects of that Dormitory telling them the composition of their new hand.  These Prefects must truthfully relay the hand’s composition to the other members of their Dormitory at the earliest opportunity.

Add a new column, “Prefect,” to the GNDT, with the options “-” or “Yes”.  Set the Prefect status of all Students to “-”.

I’d like to see some intradorm squabbling, but this is mostly a way to get around the PMs-per-24-hours limit on Nomich hand notifications.

Proposal: Nomich Jr, the second: not quite so new and improved

Fails, at length, 5-10.—Brendan

Adminned at 10 Nov 2010 09:51:45 UTC

Replace rule 2.3 (“Nomich”) by:

Any member of a Dormitory, whose condition must be “Alive”, may challenge another Dormitory to a match of Nomich by making a post to that effect. This Student is known as the “Challenger”. His dormitory is known as the “Challenging team”.

The challenge shall be immediately followed by a comment in the same thread, made by the Challenger, containing his play. A play is a sequence of cards, of any size or composition, from the Dormitory’s hand.

A Dormitory is obliged to accept the first such challenge levelled against it on a Saturday. This dormitory is known as the “Defending team”. One of the members of the Defending team, whose condition must be “Alive”, should post a play in the 24 hours after the challenge is posted, as a comment in the Challenge thread. This Student is known as the “Defender”. The first play posted by the Defending team in a challenge thread is the one that is scored for that match. If the Defending team does not post a play on a Challenge, they are assumed to have played a sequence containing no cards, and the Defender will be the Headmaster.

Once a legal play has been made by both Dormitories, all cards in those plays are removed from the hands of the Dormitories involved. The Headmaster will them refill both hands randomly, as described in the beginning of this rule.

Each Dormitory may play no more than one match of Nomich per day, and a Dormitory may not make a challenge if it is playing a match of Nomich or has already played a match of Nomich that day; nor can a challenge be levelled against a Dormitory that is playing or has played a match of Nomich that day.

The Dormitory whose play scores highest wins the match. It becomes the “Winning team”, and the other dormitory becomes the “Loosing team”. The student who posted the scoring play for the Winning Team is the Winner, and the Student who posted the scoring play for the Loosing team is the Looser.

A Dormitory who wins a game of Nomich may perform one of the two following actions:
-Add a new rule to the Nomich ruleset by PMing it to the Headmaster; or
-Change the Condition of one Student of the opposing Dormitory to Ghost or Zombie; or
-Remove a grudge that one teacher has against one Student; or
-Remove two grudges that two teachers have against the Winner.

Add a subrule to rule 2.3(“Nomich”):

The play with the largest cumulative face value scores 5 points. For the prupose of this rule, an Ace is considered have a face value of 1, a Jack to have a face value of 11, a Queen to have a face value of 12, and a King to have a face value of 13.

If more than half of the EVCs on this proposal contain the word “Cheese”, add another subrule to rule 2.3(“Nomich”):

Any play that contains a Heart, a Spades, a Club and a Diamond card scores 6 points.

Basically, I defined “Challenging team”, “Challenger”, “Defending team”, “Defender”, “Winning team”, “Winner”, “Loosing team”, and “Looser”. I also explicitely declared that the Headmaster had to randomize the cards given to Dormitories, and the defining the Winner out of a Tie had to be random too.

I also added a few actions for the winners (including an example of how the definition of the Winner could be used) because turning someone to a Zombie or a Ghost is quite useless now.

Explosive Latin Lesson: Detanaclension with Madame Bariconder

Please stop looking so stunned, class, Mr. Cullikin here has just provided a very useful demonstration of what happens when one takes the classics lightly.  Someone please look around for the rest of his fingers, yes, thank you, we’ll stitch those back on as soon as possible.  Now, if the rest of you will open your books carefully to page five and insert your earplugs, we can get to work.

Proposal: Stop Slouching, Boy

Passes 16-0. —Brendan

Adminned at 08 Nov 2010 19:42:11 UTC

In Rule 2.1 (Student Handbook), replace “As a weekly action, any Student whose Condition is Ghost or Zombie may Visit Mr. Cruik, and set their Condition to Alive.” with:-

As a weekly action, any Student whose Condition is Ghost or Zombie may Visit Mr Cruik. Upon doing so, if Mr Cruik does not have a Grudge against that Student, that Student may decrement each of their own Grades (excluding those which are “F” or Ungraded) and set their Condition to Alive.

In Rule 2.6 (Teachers), replace “Each Teacher has a Name, a Condition” with “Each Teacher has a Name, a Field (any Subject), a Condition”, and replace “have a Name and Condition of the Headmaster’s choosing” with “have a Name, Field and Condition of the Headmaster’s choosing”.

Add Mr Cruik as a Teacher with a Condition of “Ghost” and a Field of “Recreational Necromancy”.

While we’re here, add to Rule 2.6 (Teachers):-

If a Student is the subject of a Grudge by every Teacher, then that student is put on Detention.

Making dezombification less of a… no-brainer, and adding Mr Cruik as a member of Staff. Also reintroducing a couple of lost mechanics; Teachers specialising in a Subject, and too many Grudges leading to Detention.

Call for Judgment: Referee!

Passes 13-3.  Rule-addition repealed, and the Nomich record stands at 0-0 for all dorms.—Brendan

Adminned at 09 Nov 2010 22:56:05 UTC

Fellow students, I’m hereby challenging the Headmaster’s decision to award the first Nomich match of the season to Gothmog. Ichneumon made a play of 45 points at 19:40GMT on Saturday; Gothmog made a play of 59 points at 02:15GMT on Sunday. “Once a Dormitory has challenged another Dormitory to a match of Nomich, each Dormitory has until the end of that day to post a play in the comments to the challenge post.” - even with the Headmaster’s notes on the meaning of the word “Saturday”, it seems entirely unambiguous that once a challenge has been made, a Dormitory only has “until the end of that day to post a play”, and it is not possible to submit a play after that time.

The Headmaster correctly pointed out that the rules do not specify the points value of a non-existent play, but I don’t understand why the “fair play” interpretation of this unclarity was “Gothmog’s explicitly illegal play becomes legal” rather than “a non-existent play is worth zero points, rather than an undefined number”. Yes, any good sportsman would agree with the Head’s opinion that it would be “too easy to challenge another Dorm at 23:59”, and I see some pupils have applied to the relevant regulating body to change that, but this potential and unused unfairness is no reason to ignore the current Nomich rules!

Although I think this should probably have been a win for my brothers in Ichneumon House, in the spirit of good sportsmanship and for the good of the school, I suggest that the match simply be declared void - if Gothmog chose to add a new rule to the Nomich ruleset, that rule shall be removed; if Gothmog chose to turn an Ichneumon student into a Ghost or Zombie, that Student shall be made Alive.

Possibly controversial Adminnings.

Hi all. There were a lot of backed up proposals, so I went ahead and adminned them.

Two of the Enacted ones were tricky, since they referenced rules that didn’t exist. I just wanted to draw peoples attention to the Admin text of http://blognomic.com/archive/swots_and_troublemakers/ and http://blognomic.com/archive/it_tolls_not_for_you/.

Thanks. Hopefully I’ll have time during this dynasty to re-activate and join in.

Proposal: Smoother Nomich

Passes 12-1. —Brendan

Adminned at 08 Nov 2010 09:59:41 UTC

In the Rule “Nomich”, after the text

Any member of a Dormitory whose Condition is Alive may post a play on behalf of their Dormitory, and the first play posted by a Dormitory in a challenge thread is the one that is scored for that match.

Add the text:

If a Dormitory does not post a play on a Challenge, they are assumed to have declined (i.e. not accepted) the challenge if it is be legal to do so, or played a sequence containing no cards otherwise.  When a Challenge is declined in this manner it ceases to be a Challenge.  If a Once a legal play has been made by both Dormitories, all cards in those plays are removed from the hands of the Dormitories involved.

Two things:
*Making it possible to decline a challenge on a non-Saturday (by not posting a play)
*Keeping dominant hands from remaining dominant by causing played cards to be discarded.

Proposal: Nomich Timing

Passes 14-0. —Brendan

Adminned at 08 Nov 2010 09:14:27 UTC

In the Rule entitled “Nomich”, change the text

each Dormitory has until the end of that day

to

each Dormitory has 24 hours

and

At the end of each Saturday

to

At the end of each Sunday

New Player

Hey everyone, this is my first game of Nomic. I’ve played games with my roomates like 1000 Blank Cards and Mao and I’d like to try a more complicated game. Can I jump right in to this “dynasty” or will I have to wait until a new one starts?

Proposal: Cooperation is key

At 48 hours, fails 5-10. —Brendan

Adminned at 08 Nov 2010 09:13:36 UTC

If the Proposal titled “Is this your card?” failed, this Proposal does nothing.

In the rule “Spells”, in the second paragraph, remove “who share a dormitory with the caster” from the fourth sentence.

In the rule “Spells”, add the following after second paragraph.

Students may attempt to Distract a single student who is assisting in casting the spell by adding an AGAINST to comment of the post, and indicating which student they wish to distract. The caster’s grade is lowered by by 1 level for every 3 students attempting to distract that student for the purpose of casting the spell only.

Allowing for multi-dorm spells, and disrupting of spells by others.

Proposal: Is this your card?

Reached quorum 12 votes to 1. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 08 Nov 2010 05:51:07 UTC

If the Proposal titled “Apprentice wand” passed, revert its effects.

If the Proposal titled “Reanimated Brooms” passed, remove its addition to “Student Handbook”.

Add to “Grades”:

Each Grade corresponds to a Spell Power, which may be negative. A Student with a Grade of A+ in a Subject has a Spell Power of 5 in that Subject. Similarly, A gives 3 Spell Power, B gives 2, C gives 1, D gives -1, E gives -3 and F gives -5. Ungraded Grades give no Spell Power.

Create a new rule, “Spells”:

All Students have access to a number of Spells, listed in subrules to this rule. All spells have a Difficulty Level in one or more subjects, which may be negative, and an Effect.

A student (the caster) may attempt to cast a spell as a weekly action. To do so, they must make a post with the title “Casting {Spell}, where {Spell} is the name of the spell they intend to cast. If the Effect of that spell requires a target, one must be specified in the body of the post. Students who share a dormitory with the caster may join in the casting by adding a FOR icon in a comment to the post. The caster may complete the spell once within 48 hours of making the post and, if for each subject in which the Spell has a Difficulty level the sum of Spell Power of all participating Students (including the caster) in that subject meets or exceeds the Difficulty Level, execute the Effect of the spell.

Add the following as a subrule to this rule, called “Revive”:

:Difficulty level: RNY: 3; ALC: 0
:Effect: Set the condition of the targeted Student to Alive.

An alternative to undef’s idea. The selection of spells would be limited to elaborate rituals with flashy effects that may take several skilled Students to pull off.

Proposal: It Tolls Not For You

Quorum at 12-0 and is Enacted.
Sentence quoted in second paragraph does not exist in rule 2.7 “Library”. Not repealing Rule 2.2 (Classes) since it does not exist (You were thinking (Class), I believe.) See my comment at http://blognomic.com/archive/swots_and_troublemakers/ for why this is relevant. Once again, CFJ if this is not the proper ruleing. (I adminned these proposals in order, didn’t expect that to come up again so soon…) - lilomar

Adminned at 07 Nov 2010 16:17:57 UTC

To Rule 2.5 (Lessons), add:-

If a Lesson post is more than 24 hours old, the Headmaster may leave a comment on that post announcing that the Lesson has ended. Once a Lesson is over, Students may not take the actions listed in this rule within that Lesson.

Remove “If a Student Disrupts a Lesson being given by a Teacher, the Headmaster may give that Teacher a Grudge against the Student, within 24 hours of the Disruption being caused.” from Rule 2.7, and remove the brackets from the next sentence.

Replace the “If a student Brown Noses” bullet point with:-

If a Student Brown Noses, they stand a chance of becoming Teacher’s Pet at the end of the lesson.

Repeal Rule 2.2 (Classes).

Giving an ending time to Lessons, moving the Grudge and Brown Nose mechanics so that they’re processed at the exact end of the lesson, and cutting Josh’s now-redundant “They are considered to be taking that class for the entire day.” rule.

Proposal: Second Notice

Reaches quorum 12-0 and is Enacted. - lilomar

Adminned at 07 Nov 2010 16:05:22 UTC

In the rule “Student Handbook,” change “Each Student is assigned to a Dormitory” to “Each Student other than the Headmaster is assigned to a Dormitory”.

Brendan used the wrong title in his earlier proposal.

Proposal: Swots and Troublemakers

Reaches Quorum at 12-0 and is Enacted.
The second part has no effect, since, at the time of enactment, there was no rule 2.7 with the title “Teachers”. There is a rule 2.7 Entitled “Library”, but I made the Administerial decision that parenthetical expressions within the description of a rule are nessesary conditions. Feel free to CFJ if you think that the text should have been added to Rule 2.7, (Library) instead of omitted entirely.
Also, I renamed the rule “Teacher’s Pet” to “Teacher’s Pet”, for whatever it’s worth. - lilomar

Adminned at 07 Nov 2010 16:03:08 UTC

Rename Rule 2.7 (Teacher’s Pet) to “Teacher’s Pet”, make it a subrule of Rule 2.6, and reword it to:-

As a weekly action, a Student may Wheedle a Teacher, so long as they are that Teacher’s Pet. Upon doing so, they may give that Teacher a Grudge against any Student, and/or remove a single Grudge that that Teacher has.

To Rule 2.7 (Teachers), add:-

If a Student Disrupts a Lesson being given by a Teacher, the Headmaster may give that Teacher a Grudge against the Student, within 24 hours of the Disruption being caused. (If a Teacher would gain a Grudge against a Student while already having a Grudge against that Student, no Grudge is gained.)

If a Student is the subject of a Grudge by every Teacher, then that student is put on Detention.

In Rule 2.5 (Lessons), replace “If a Student has not yet commented on the post and is not Dead” with:-

If a Student has not yet commented on the post and is not on Detention

Simplifying the Teacher’s Pet bonus effect, and introducing Detention for persistent troublemakers. (Also reintroducing the Grudge-gaining mechanic, which was accidentally overwritten by a proposal.)

Proposal: Apprentice wand

Fails per s/k. - lilomar

Adminned at 07 Nov 2010 15:52:47 UTC

Add a new rule, “Casting spells”:

As a weekly action, each Student may Request to Cast a Spell. A Student’s Grade in the spell’s Subject defines a cost. The costs are 2 for A+, 3 for A, 4 for B, 5 for C. Having a grade of D, E, F or “-” precludes spellcasting. The student will send a private message to the Headmaster with the subject “Spell: [STUDENT] casts [SPELL] on [TARGET]”.

As soon as possible the Headmaster will reply with a Result, determined by counting Success points: roll a DICE6 and subtract the cost. If the Result is greater than zero, the spell succeeds and the Headmaster performs the spell’s Outcome, then informs the student via private message. If the spell fails (Result is zero or less), or the student is not allowed to cast his spell, the Headmaster will reply with that information.

As a weekly action, the Headmaster will post a “Revelation” blog message, listing the Spell Requests since the previous Revelation, or all spell requests if no such posting has previously been made. Spell results are not posted.

Add a new rule, “Spell book”:

Each Spell has a corresponding Subject, Outcome, and any number of Conditions:

  • Imaginatur (DIV) - For each Success point, show the Spellcaster one card of the target Dormitory’s hand. May only be cast by Alive students.
  • Vocatus (BST) - For each Success point, a Nomich Beast is summoned, and decrements the target Dormitory’s Score. May only be cast by Zombies.
  • Maledictus (LAT) - For each Success point, a Zombie from target Dormitory (if any) is hit by explosive curses and becomes a Ghost.

If the proposal titled “We want Crystal Balls, not war” failed, remove the spell “Imaginatum” from the “Spell book” rule above.

Students are eager to try out their newfound knowledge, with or without faculty supervision.

Proposal: Conventional Divination and Warfare

Failed per s/k. - lilomar

Adminned at 07 Nov 2010 15:50:54 UTC

If the Proposal titled “Reanimated Brooms” failed, this Proposal does nothing.
If the Proposal titled “We want Crystal Balls, not war” failed, then if the column DIV exists in the GNDT, then change its name to CWW.

I think this makes sense, even if it’s just a small change.

Proposal: Reanimated Brooms

Reaches Quorum at 12-3. Enacting. - lilomar

Adminned at 07 Nov 2010 15:47:22 UTC

Append the following to the rule “Student Handbook:”

As a weekly action, any Student whose Condition is Ghost or Zombie may Visit Mr. Cruik, and set their Condition to Alive.

Replace all instances of “Battle Magic” in the Ruleset with “Recreational Necromancy.”  Replace all instances of “BTL” in the Ruleset with “RNY.”  Change the name of the column BTL in the GNDT to RNY.

If the column CWW exists in the GNDT, change its name to DIV.

If the phrase “a Grudge against one or more Students” exists in the rule “Teachers,” replace it with the following:

a Grudge against any number of Students

In the rule “Nomich,” replace the sentence “Nomich is played with an ordinary deck of cards.” with the following:

Nomich is played with an ordinary deck of 52 cards.

Append the following to the end of the fourth paragraph in the rule “Nomich:”

If both Dormitories in a match have the same score, the Headmaster shall choose one of them as the winner of the match.

In the rule “Nomich,” after the sentence “The play with the largest cumulative face value scores 5 points,” add the following pararaph (unindented):

In Nomich, an Ace is considered have a face value of 1, a Jack to have a face value of 11, a Queen to have a face value of 12, and a King to have a face value of 13.

Story Post: Nomich Challenge

Ichneumon challenges Gothmog to a game of Nomich.

I’m going to sticky the challenge till it ends so it doesn’t get lost if another big batch of proposals comes up

Overnomich

In attempting to notify all Students of their Nomich hand contents, I have evidently “surpassed the Private Message sending limit for a 24 hour period.”  Gothmog, Ichneumon and Penanggalan should all have theirs, but if members of Bandersnatch would like to email me at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address), I’ll respond with your hand as soon as possible.  (If I somehow surpassed the limit earlier than I thought and members of other teams don’t see messages in their PM inboxes, feel free to email as well.)

Once a week Students with the condition “Ghost” may replace a “Study” action during a Lesson with a “Possession” action. This action targets a Student with the “Alive” condition. Instead of increasing their grade by an increment of one, the Possessing student increases their grade by an increment of two, so long as their new grade does not equal or exceed the grade (at the time the Possession action is taken) of the target of Possession. As per the “Lessons” rule, Students must post a comment to the appropriate Lesson’s entry describing their behavior and which must include a designation of the target of the “Possession” action.

Add a new rule: Headshot!

Once a week Students with the condition Alive may replace a “Disrupt” action during a Lesson with a “Disorient” action. This action has all of the effects of a “Disrupt” action with the added effect of decrementing a targeted Student, whose condition is either “Ghost” or “Zombie” by two steps instead of one. As per the “Lessons” rule, Students must post a comment to the appropriate Lesson’s entry describing their behavior and which must include a designation of the target of the “Disorient” action.

Add a new rule; Mmmrrrrghhhh…

During a Lesson, no Student with the “Zombie” condition, hereafter “Zombie Student,” may have their grade in that subject lowered below the lowest grade held by a Zombie Student attending the the same Lesson. At least three Zombie Students must be attending a Lesson for this protection to take effect. If a Zombie Student has his or her grade reduced by a “Disorient” action then that reduction may take him or her no lower than one step below the the lowest grade held by a Zombie Student attending the same lesson.

There’s an advantage to pretty much everything as long as you can find it. Those students of the less than corporeal persuasion can bring the concept of “Study Partners” to a whole new plain of awkwardness. The livelier kids have learned ways to exploit their vitally challenged peers in ways that will gross out everyone else in class. As for the studying dead, well, who needs brains? A horde, after all, is only as smart as its dumbest member.

Proposal: He’s Been Here Forever

Passes at 13-0. However, since there is no rule calles “Essentials”, the first part does nothing.  -Purplebeard

In the rule “Essentials,” replace the text “Each Student is assigned to a Dormitory” with

Each Student other than the Headmaster is assigned to a Dormitory

Set the Condition of the Headmaster to Ghost.  Add “-” to the list of Dormitories in the GNDT configuration, and set the Headmaster’s Dormitory to it.

Proposal: We want Crystal Balls, not war

If the proposal “Pay attention at the back” is enacted, change the rule “Class” by replacing “Conventional Warfare & Weaponry” by “Divination”.

If the proposal “You mean there’s no necromancy class?” is enacted, change the rule “Grades” (if it exists) by replacing “Conventional Warfare & Weaponry (CWW)” by “Divination (DIV)”.

If the proposal “No Necromancy Part 2” is enacted, change the rule “Teachers” (if it exists) by replacing “Conventional Warfare & Weaponry” by “Divination”.

Proposal: School Library

Passes at 11-0. -Purplebeard

Adminned at 06 Nov 2010 07:42:12 UTC

If the Proposal titled “Spelling Lessons” failed, this Proposal does nothing.

Add a new rule, “Library”:-

The School Library has a vast collection of books, but zombies have been known to hide among its shelves. As a weekly action, a Student who is Alive may Study in the Library by incrementing their Grade in any one main Subject. As a weekly action, a student who is a Zombie may convert to Zombie status any other student who Studied in the Library in the previous 24 hours and is still Alive.

Apprentice wizards (aka new players) inevitably make mistakes and get in the way, but hopefully they learn :)

Proposal: Quiet study

If the Proposal titled “Spelling Lessons” failed, this Proposal does nothing.

Add a new rule, “Library”:-

As a weekly action, a Student may choose to study any of the main Subjects in the Library by posting a blog entry with the subject “Library: [STUDENT] studies [SUBJECT]” and then incrementing their Grade in that Subject.

Dedicated students will learn much from books, but some contain dangerous knowledge, and shadowy creatures lurk in the Library’s corners…

Proposal: Ooh! Ooh! Pick me! Pick me!

Reaches quorum 13 votes to 0. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 06 Nov 2010 07:27:26 UTC

If the Proposal: Spelling Lessons fails then this has no effect.

If the rule “Lessons” exists, replace the sentence “If a Student has not yet commented on the post and is not Dead, that Student may choose to Study or Disrupt in this Lesson by posting a comment on this entry describing their behaviour:-“ With:

If a Student has not yet commented on the post and is not Dead, that Student may choose to Study, Disrupt, or, if already possessing a grade of A+, Brown Nose, by posting a comment on this entry describing their behaviour:-

If the rule “Lessons” exists, append the following descriptor:

• If a student Brown Noses then the Headmaster will either remove a grudge held by the Teacher offering the lesson against the Brown Nosing student or, if no grudges exist, change the Teacher’s Pet status to [STUDENT’S NAME]. In the event of multiple Brown Nosing students, the student with the lowest number of grudges held against them collectively by the faculty will be awarded the status of Teacher’s Pet. If there are multiple Brown Nosing students that meet this criteria the status of Teacher’s Pet will be awarded to the most deserving student at the Headmaster’s discretion.

If the rule “Teachers” exists change it to read:

Professor Abalone’s School of Witchcraft and Miscellany has a number of Teachers, listed in the BlogNomic wiki page “Teachers”. Each Teacher has a Name, a Condition (Alive, Ghost, or Zombie), a Pet (None, or STUDENT’S NAME)  and a Grudge against one or more Students. The Headmaster may hire new Teachers at any time by adding them to the wiki page; new Teachers have a Name and Condition of the Headmaster’s choosing, a Pet status of None, and no Grudges.

Add a new rule, “Teacher’s Pet”

A student who has the quality Teacher’s Pet gains access to unique weekly actions. A Teacher’s Pet may, once a week, either, cause the Teacher for that claims the student as a Pet to develop a grudge against another student OR resist the decrementing effect of a Disrupt action taken during a Lesson being taught by the Teacher that claims the student as a Pet. The quality of Teacher’s Pet persists for a week after it is awarded after which time the Teacher’s Pet status is changed to “None,” and the quality is removed from the student and must be re-earned.

Like all top level, upstanding academic institutions, Professor Abalone’s School of Witchcraft and Miscellany has a fine tradition of brown nosery, derriere kissery, and general smarmy ingratiation.

Proposal: A Wizard’s Staff

Passes 13-0.—Brendan

Enact a new Rule, “Teachers”:-

Professor Abalone’s School of Witchcraft and Miscellany has a number of Teachers, listed in the BlogNomic wiki page “Teachers”. Each Teacher has a Name, a Condition (Alive, Ghost, or Zombie) and a Grudge against one or more Students. The Headmaster may hire new Teachers at any time by adding them to the wiki page; new Teachers have a Name and Condition of the Headmaster’s choosing, and no Grudges.

If “Spelling Lessons” passed, replace “a Name, a Condition” with “a Name, a Specialty (Conjuration, Divination, Necromancy, Herbcraft, Sport or None), a Condition” in the rule just created, replace “Name and Condition of the Headmaster’s Choice” with “Name, Specialty and Condition of the Headmaster’s Choice”, and add the following paragraph to the rule just created:-

If a Student Disrupts a Lesson being given by a Teacher, the Headmaster may give that Teacher a Grudge against the Student (if they do not already have one), within 24 hours of the Disruption being caused.

If the Rule “Lessons” exists, replace its first sentence with:-

As a daily Action, the Headmaster may call a Lesson by posting a blog entry with the subject “[SUBJECT] Lesson: [SPECIALISATION] with [TEACHER]”, where [SUBJECT] is a Subject, [SPECIALISATION] is any word or phrase and [TEACHER] is the Teacher who will give the Lesson.

Add a new rule, “Grades”:-

Each Student has a Grade in each of the five main Subjects: Conjuration (CON), Divination (DIV), Necromancy (NEC), Herbcraft (HRB) and Sport (SPT). These are tracked in the GNDT. A Grade may be (in descending order) A+, A, B, C, D, E, F or Ungraded (”-”) and each Student’s Grade for each Subject starts as Ungraded.

Add a new rule, “Lessons”:-

As a daily Action, the Headmaster may call a Lesson by posting a blog entry with the subject “[SUBJECT] Lesson: [SPECIALISATION]”, where [SUBJECT] is a Subject, and [SPECIALISATION] is any word or phrase. If a Student has not yet commented on the post and is not Dead, that Student may choose to Study or Disrupt in this Lesson by posting a comment on this entry describing their behaviour:-

  • If a Student Studies in a Lesson, they may either set their Grade in that Lesson’s Subject to ‘C’, or increment their current Grade in that Lesson’s Subject.
  • If a Student Disrupts a Lesson, they may set their Grade in that Lesson’s Subject to ‘F’, and decrement the Grade in that Subject of every other Student who has already commented on the blog post (to a minimum of “E”).

Proposal: Pay attention at the back

Passes 11-5-2 with 7 “Scoring” EVCs. Whew.—Brendan

Adminned at 05 Nov 2010 20:58:28 UTC

Add a new rule to the ruleset, entitled Class:

Students take one class per day. They are considered to be taking that class for the entire day.

* Monday - Beginners Alchemy
* Tuesday - Wild Beasts
* Wednesday - Battle Magic
* Thursday - Conventional Warfare & Weaponry
* Friday - Explosive Latin
* Saturday - Nomich
* Sunday - no class

Add a new rule, entitled Nomich:

Nomich is a sport played by Students. It may only be played on a Saturday. Students who belong to the same Dormitory are always on the same team.

Nomich is played with an ordinary deck of cards. At all times when not playing a game of Nomich, each Dormitory should be holding seven cards. The cards held by each Dormitory should be kept a secret to all other Dormitories and should be tracked by the Headmaster. If, any any time, a Dormitory is holding less than seven cards and is not playing a Nomich, the Headmaster should assign them enough cards that they have a hand of seven, and should then send a private message to all members of that Dormitory telling them the composition of their new hand. The Headmaster must ensure that the same card is not being held by more than one Dormitory at any given time.

Any member of a Dormitory may challenge another Dormitory to a match of Nomich by making a post to that effect.

Once a Dormitory has challenged another Dormitory to a match of Nomich, each Dormitory has until the end of that day to post a play in the comments to the challenge post. A play is a sequence of cards, of any size or composition, from the Dormitory’s hand that the Dormitory intends to score against. The Dormitory whose play scores highest wins the match. Any member of a Dormitory whose Condition is Alive may post a play on behalf of their Dormitory, and the first play posted by a Dormitory in a challenge thread is the one that is scored for that match.

The score value of any play is adjudged according to the Nomich Ruleset. The Nomich Ruleset is secret and should be known in its entirety only to the Headmaster. The first rule in the Nomich ruleset is as follows:

The play with the largest cumulative face value scores 5 points.

At the end of each Saturday, or as soon as possible thereafter, the Headmaster should indicate in each challenge thread which Dormitory won and what each play scored.

A Dormitory who wins a game of Nomich may perform one of the two following actions:

*Add a new rule to the Nomich ruleset by PMing it to the Headmaster; or
*Change the Condition of one Student of the opposing Dormitory to Dead.

If more than half of the EVCs on this proposal contain the word “Scoring”, then add the following rule to the ruleset, entitled Inter-House Competiton:

Each Dormitory has a score, which may be any integer between -200 and 200. These values are officially tracked by the Headmaster but may be noted in the BlogNomic sidebar.

Whenever a Dormitory wins a game of Nomich, they gain 5 points.

If Proposal: Rotters and Floaters passed, change the word “Dead” in the rule entitled “Nomich” to “Ghost or Zombie”.

Quorumed, 13-0 -Darth

Adminned at 05 Nov 2010 09:38:04 UTC

Create a new rule, “Student Handbook,” as follows:

Each Student is assigned to a Dormitory, which is tracked in the GNDT, and is one of the following:

  1. Gothmog Hall
  2. Ichneumon Hall
  3. Penanggalan Hall
  4. Bandersnatch Hall

When an Admin adds a Student without a Dormitory to the GNDT, that Admin shall roll DICE4 and assign the Student to the Dormitory with the corresponding number.

All Students have a Condition, which is either Alive or Dead.  This is tracked in the GNDT.

Set the Condition of every Student to Alive.  As soon as possible after this Proposal is enacted, the Headmaster shall assign each Student a random Dormitory.

Greetings! I would like to be a participant in this dynasty (please).

Unidle me please

I figure I’ll be having another go at this.

A puff of brimstone-scented smoke

and I appear.  Unidle me.

It’s been a long time…

Alright, let me get back into this.  Perfect timing, what with the new dynasty and all.

Can someone please unidle me?  Thanks!

Ascension Address: Start of Term

Yes, thank you, quiet please.  QUIET PLEASE.  I know the ride has been lengthy and that two of your new classmates were lost to the Moonbeast en route, but I assure you they will be largely recovered, and I would appreciate your full attention at this time.

Welcome, students, to Professor Abalone’s School of Witchcraft and Miscellany.  Some of you are new to the campus; others arrive with years of thaumaturgical practice behind them.  In either case, you have been admitted to a grand educational institution, and I ask that you demonstrate your regard and respect for its history.  That means full attention in classes, no spellcasting without strict faculty supervision, and avoidance of the East Wing, which is only partially confined to this plane of existence.

At this time, please report to your new dormitories, as assigned by the color-coded creature tattooed on your right forearm.  Dinner is served at six o’clock sharp in the Floating Rathskeller.  I anticipate an exciting year for all of us, students, and please remember to report to Mr. Cruik if at any point you are dead.

-

Repeal all Dynastic Rules.  Replace “Agent” with “Student” and “Director of Operations” with “Headmaster” throughout the Ruleset.

I know we’ve had plenty of “scam infinite spells to win” Dynasties; I’m aiming here for more a “boarding school that is insanely dangerous for magical reasons” flavor.

Count me in.

I’m sad I didn’t know about this sooner than now. I would very much like to participate in the next Dynasty.

Returning too

I request to be unidled.

I’ll be playing the second dynasty of Brendan with you guys. =)

End-of-dynasty discussion

This has been a great dynasty, but due to the nature of its theme much of the gameplay was hidden or obscured from most players and onlookers. Now that the dynasty is over, I’m curious to hear what everyone has been up to. Who were the station raiders, apart from Brendan? Have Agents been cooperating to complete the victory condition? Was the transmission mechanic ever successfully used to transmit useful information? Share your secret machinations and suspicions here.

Returning

I would like my idle to be ended now, and that I rejoin as an active Agent/whatever is next. :)

Declaration of Victory: Thanks, New Guys

This has been open for at least 12 hours, has a quorum of FOR votes at 9-1, and D-Ops has voted FOR. Congratulations to Brendan as we enter his second dynasty. -Purplebeard

Adminned at 04 Nov 2010 01:39:47 UTC

I hereby declare victory, thanks to HEADSMAN, NONILLION, JUMBUCK and of course my dear friend and Interceptor VIRGATE.

Final Report received

Agent Brendan has submitted a Final Report which correctly identifies the Codenames of at least four Agents he does not share an Allegiance with, and he has hereby achieved victory. (This is all I am required to say at this stage, but I’ll confirm the details in the DoV.)

Update: I’ve very hurriedly dumped the Codename dossier here, now that Brendan’s DoV has passed - if anyone wants to clean up the data, feel free.

Breaking News

In spite of a minor arson attack on the press offices last night, the Hamburger Morgenpost has run a story this morning identifying the Codenames of the Agents and Impostors currently active in Berlin: AIGRETTE, BUTCHERBIRD, GROGRAM, HARUSPEX, JUMBUCK, KALEYARD, NONILLION, OLEASTER, TIPCAT, VAPORETTO, VIRGATE, WHITLOW and YELLOWTAIL.

Create a new rule, “Tracking”, with the following text:

Every agent shall have a list of other agents that they are currently tracking (their ‘Tracking List’) which shall be maintained privately by D-Ops and which shall begin empty. As a daily action any agent with a Codename (the ‘Tracker’) may attempt to Mark another agent by telephoning D-Ops with the subject line “TRACKER marks SUBJECT”, where “TRACKER” is the codename of the Tracker and “SUBJECT” is the codename of the agent the Tracker wishes to track (the ‘Subject’). The body of the email must contain the Subject’s name, Codename, and current Location. If all of the required information is listed in the body of the email and is correct at the time of sending then D-Ops shall add the Subject to the Tracker’s Tracking List. If any of the required information from the body of the email is missing or incorrect then D-Ops shall inform the Tracker that they have failed, and also inform the Subject of the Codename and current Location of the Tracker.

As a daily action any agent with a Codename(the ‘Tracker’) who has not attempted to Mark an agent during the same day may telephone D-Ops with the subject line “Track”. D-Ops shall reply with the current location of each agent on the Tracker’s Tracking List.

D-Ops may select a single Agent and assign them a new Codename, then check his email sent box for any emails that included the previous Codename of the Agent (excluding the most recent one), and inform the recipients of those emails of this change of codename. He must also inform the Agent of this change.

Oh dear, this had to happen eventually - I took someone’s illegal email action at face value without checking it, and gave out a codename that shouldn’t have been revealed. Not a perfect fix, but probably the best I can do.
