Proposal: Sound Investing

In “Finance,” replace

At any time a contractor may gain 2 Investment to gain 1 Fund.

with

At any time a contractor may gain 1 Investment to gain 1 Fund.

It makes more sense for Investments and Funds to be increased at a 1:1 ratio.

Proposal: Selling the By-Products

Create A rule named “Sales”:

If a contractor is not the creator of a currently valid Sale, that Contractor may create one by performing the following atomic action:

*Reducing their Resources by any amount
*Posting a Story Post blog entry with a title that includes the words “Sale” and listing the quantities of Resources removed in the previous step (and only those Resources), as well as a minimum price

Any Contractor that is not the creator may respond to a Sale with a comment in the format “Bidding $XB”, where X is a non-negative integer greater than or equal to the minimum price: such a comment is known as a Bid. If the value stated in a Bid is less than or equal to its Bidder’s Funds, and it is not equal in value to an earlier Valid Bid on the same Sale, then it is a Valid Bid.

If a Sale is more than 24 hours old and no Contractor has made a Valid Bid on it in the past 24 hours, then any Contractor or the Great Eccentric may close the Sale by posting a comment to that effect on that Sale: upon doing so, the Contractor with the highest Valid Bid on the Sale pays Funds equal to that Bid’s value to the sale’s creator, and gains the Resources listed in the Sale. If no valid bid has been made, increase the resources of the creator of the sale by those listed in the sale. The Sale then ceases to be a Sale.

This is strongly based on the “Deliveries” Rule, but I could not find a simple way to cleanly merge the two.

The loss of resources during sale ensures that they will be there when the auction is over.

Proposal: the lone contractor

Add the following after the first atomic action listed in Contracts

If it has been 60 hours or more since the last bid on a project with only bids from 1 contractor, the Great Eccentric may “Award” a project by taking the following atomic action:
*Make a blog post stating the name of the project being awarded. This post is known as the project’s contract.
*In the contract state which contractor had the lowest bid. This is known as the project’s winner.
*List double the amount of the lowest bid. This is known as the project’s prize
*Resolve the resource ranges in the project’s estimation, and list this in the contract. This is known as the project’s cost.
*Change the status of the project to “contracted”

it’s probable that a contractor might be the only one to ever bid on a project. perhaps the others don’t want to lose their infrastructure by changing sites and so on.

Proposal: venn diagrams [Core]

After the first sentence of Votable Matters, add the following text:

A Voter is either a Contractor or the Great Eccentric.

change all instances of “any Contractor or the Great Eccentric” to

a good suggestion from derrick. this issue didn’t come up before the Special Case rule “Dynastic Distance” existed semi-permanently in the ruleset. Before that the Emperor would need to vote a version of that rule through and would presumably pay closer attention to the proposals to make sure they were included if necessary.

Add a sub rule to “Resources named “Deals”:

A contractor may propose a “Deal” by making a story post listing a specific amount funds and/or resources they would like to trade for a specific number of funds and/or resources, and a contractor they would like to trade with. If the contractor listed in the post makes a “FOR” comment on the post, the listed amounts of funds and resources are exchanged. If the Great Eccentric feels the deal is non-competative, he may make a comment containing the words “ANTI-TRUST” and reduce the funds of either or both contractors in the deal by an amount not to exceed the total count of funds and resources in the trade

I feel like swapping resources around is very much an in-theme mechanic for this dynasty. I also feel like simply teaming up to make it so one contractor wins is not, so this gives the great eccentric the ability to penalize one-sided trades. I promise to only use this ability to deter noncompetitive trading.

I’m not sure why it’s important to force contracts to close if a contractor would have a net loss. Some real life companies take a loss in return for the less tangible resource of publicity or to make up a mistake. At any rate the option to cancel is still there to the winner.

IMO, we should have more deliveries open so the resources can flow more freely. The winner of a contract may cancel it at any time. If a contractor would loose as much or more money by completing a project they are the winner of than by canceling its project, any contractor or the Great Eccentric may cancel the contract.

Kevan pointed out that bidding on projects you don’t intend to complete is a valid strategy currently. This is my solution to the problem. I suppose its still a valid tactic if you think the delay is worth the loss of $3B, but that’s a much more interesting decision.

Make “Contracts” a subrule of “Projects”, rename it to “Reviews” and reword it to:-

If the Great Eccentric has not Reviewed a Project in the previous 48 hours, the Great Eccentric may Review a random Dreamed Project by taking the following atomic action:

* Make a blog post stating the name of the Project being reviewed.
* Resolve the resource ranges in the Project’s estimation, and list this in the contract. This is known as the Project’s Cost.
* Set the Project’s Prize to the total number of Resources in its Cost.
* Change the status of the Project to Contracted.

A Contractor may construct a Contracted Project by paying the Project’s Cost from their Resources and increasing their Funds by the Contract’s Prize (minus $1B for every full 72 hours that have passed since the project became Contracted).

If a Project was constructed more than 24 hours ago, any Contractor may change that Project’s Status to Finished.

To the bullet list in “Projects”, add:-

* a prize (either a number or “Unknown”)

Set the Prize of all Projects to “Unknown”.

Planning my next move - and assuming auction patches to resolve ties - the obvious one is to bid as low as possible on any projects I don’t intend to complete (and/or which I can see that other players are more likely to complete). Maybe we don’t actually need two auction systems here.

Social Resources are means that a Contractor can use for outreach, and includes Publicity.

At any time, a Contractor may spend 1 Robot to increase any other Material Resource by 1; likewise, they may spend 1 Publicity to increase any other Human Resource by 1.

If either “Reperpousing of Resources” or “A Proper Transformer” enacts, this Proposal shall be considered self-killed for the purpose of its resolution.

Create a rule named “Contracts”:

A contractor may make a bid on a project with a status of “Posted” by sending a private message to the Great Eccentric stating the name of the project and an amount.

If it has been 24 hours or more since the last bid on a project with bids from more than one contractor, the Great Eccentric may “Award” a project by taking the following atomic action:
*Make a blog post stating the name of the project being awarded. This post is known as the project’s contract.
*In the contract state which contractor had the lowest bid. This is known as the project’s winner.
*List the amount of the second lowest bid. This is known as the project’s prize
*Resolve the resource ranges in the project’s estimation, and list this in the contract. This is known as the project’s cost.
*Change the status of the project to “contracted”

A contractor may Complete a contract by paying the project’s cost from their resources, changing the project’s status to finished, and increasing their funds by the contract’s prize minus $1B for every full 72 hours since the project was awarded.

Add a subrule named “Resource Ranges” the rule “Resources”:

A resource range follows the format “X-Y A”, where X and Y are numbers with X lower than Y, and A is the first letter of a resource.

When a resource range is resolved, the result is number of resources, with the resource matching the letter of the resource range and the number being randomly selected from between X and Y inclusive.

Create a rule named “Projects”:

Projects are tracked as a list in a subrule of this rule named “Project List”.

A Project has:
* a name (which is a string)
* a status (which is either dreamed, posted, contracted, or finished, and defaults to dreamed)
* an estimation (a list of resource ranges)

If a rule named “City Sites” exists, add to the list of attributes a project has:

*a location (which is a site)

Proposal: Corrupted by Capitalism

Add a new rule, “City Sites”:-

Each Contractor is working at a Site, which may be either Earth, Mars, Moon, Ocean or Space, and which is tracked in the GNDT (defaulting to Earth, which may be tracked as “-”). Earth and Ocean are Local Sites, all others are Offworld Sites.

A Contractor may spend 1 Transportation to change their Site from a Local Site to another Local Site.

A Contractor with at least 5 Engineering may spend 2 Transportation to change their Site to any Site.

Whenever a Contractor changes their own Site, they must set their Infrastructure to zero.

To the “Resources” rule, add a Resource:-

* Infrastructure represents the physical buildings and facilities constructed at a site. It includes housing, roads and power systems. X units of Infrastructure may be written as XI, where X is the amount of Infrastructure.

In the rule “Deliveries” (if it exists), replace “Robots, Transportation, Colonists, Publicity, Biology and Engineering” with “Robots, Transportation, Colonists, Publicity, Biology, Engineering and Infrastructure”.

Add a new rule, “Deliveries”:-

If no Delivery exists, any Contractor may create one by performing the following atomic action:

* Randomly selecting a type of Resource from Robots, Transportation, Colonists, Publicity, Biology and Engineering
* Repeating the previous step four more times
* Posting a Story Post blog entry with a title that includes the words “New Delivery” and listing the quantities of Resources selected in the previous steps (and only those Resources)

Any Contractor may respond to a Delivery with a comment in the format “Bidding $XB”, where X is a non-negative integer greater than zero: such a comment is known as a Bid. If the value stated in a Bid is less than or equal to its Bidder’s Funds, and it is not equal in value to an earlier Valid Bid on the same Delivery, then it is a Valid Bid.

If a Delivery is more than 24 hours old and no Contractor has made a Valid Bid on it in the past 24 hours, then any Contractor may close the Delivery: upon doing so, the Contractor with the highest Valid Bid on the Delivery loses Funds equal to that Bid’s value, and gains the Resources listed in the Delivery. The Delivery then ceases to be a Delivery.

To “Finance”, after “Each Contractor has Investment and Funds, which are numbers tracked in the GNDT with a ‘$’ before and a ‘B’ after.” add:-

Investment has a starting value of 10, and Funds has a starting value of 10.

Set all Contractors’ Investment and Funds to 10.

A Contractor’s Funds divided by their investment is their Return on Investment, or ROI. The Contractor with the highest Return on Investment when the dynasty has finalized has achieved victory.

The dynasty has not finalized.

Create a rule named “Resources”:

Each Contractor has 0 or more of the following resources.
*Robots represent machines that build things. It includes robotic arms in factories, automated construction equipment, and miners. X units of robots may be written as XR, where X is the number of robots.
*Transportation represents trains, boats, spaceships, and everything else that moves other things. X units of transportation may be written as XT, where X in the amount of transportation.
*Colonists represent unattached workers looking for a better life. Colonists can be sent to live on far-off worlds, but they can also be genetically engineered or paid to live in unusual circumstances. X units of colonists may be written as XC, where X is the number of colonists.
*Publicity represents Advertising, philanthropy, friendly reporters, and other ways to manage public opinion. X units of Publicity may be written as XP, where X is the amount of publicity.
*Biology represent genetic engineers, ecologists, medical staff, and the facilities they need. X units of Biologists may be written as XB, where X is the amount of biology.
*Engineering represents the ability to plan and solve physical engineering problems. It includes materials engineers, physicists, architects, and rocket engineers. X units of Engineering may be written as XE, where X is the amount of Engineering.

Ascension Address: Much Larger than the Pyramids

I gazed up at the pyramids towering above me. They weren’t the largest structures ever built. I’d commissioned larger ones myself, even before reaching my current status and power. Yet there was something special about these 4 millenia old structures. Something inspiring.

“Did you know the egyptians weren’t the first civilization?” My voice startles my assistant, and she looks around nervously to see if I’m offending any locals: it would make the news.

“We actually aren’t sure who is first. We remember egypt because of those. Because of the size and audacity of what they acomplished. Because they built big.”

“People talk about changing the world, but all they ever change is the attitudes of the people on it. I’m going to change it. Not with words and social programs, but with tractors and spaceships. I’ll control the weather. I’ll send colonists to mars. I’ll send them to the stars. I’ll build cities in space. I’ll build them underwater.”

I gaze back up at the pyramids “And no one will ever forget me.”

“Where are you going to find someone who can build a city in space?” My assistant asks.

I smile “Oh, I know some people who could do it, given enough money”

Dynasty Ideas

I like to check for interest in dynasty ideas before picking one. Right now I have three ideas I’m considering:

* A dynasty about contractors making secret bids on projects and building the right team for a job whose requirements aren’t known until the last second. The theme could be criminal mercenaries, space mega structures, or even gilded age construction projects.
* A dynasty about governing a polity. Each player gets a different position with different powers and goals each “round”. Perhaps we have a mechanic where scoring points weakens your faction’s strength and thus ability to determine position. Themes could be a fantasy city with magical powers in each position, a modern democracy with checks and balances, or a hereditary monarchy with factional leaders born into different positions.
* A dynasty about deck building and card duels. We’d probably have a card-building start with occasional duels for bonuses and the test the rules, and then end with a tournament. The duels could be framed as armies clashing, close up personal magical duels, a slow logistical contest, or even robots or spaceships fighting.

I want to know which mechanics and themes interest you the most. You’ll notice that I’m separating the mechanics from the themes: I think they’re both necessary and both important. I’m interested in your preferences on each.

I think we all know that modifier is the only word that really makes sense there.

Possible Constitutional Crisis

I noticed a DoV and looked at how the victory mechanic works in this dynasty, out of curiosity. I noticed the following sentence in “Items” (see the rest of the rule for context):

Rules that do not add an attribute are considered rules text that apply only to that item.

The definition of a Rule is pretty clear from the Appendix:

Each individually numbered section of the ruleset is a rule, including sections that are sub-rules of other rules.

(Currently, the Rules themselves aren’t actually numbered due to how the wiki page is set up, but they are numbered in the Contents block.)

None of our Rules actually adds an attribute (with the possible exception of the “Items” Rule itself). Does this mean that our Core Rules are only considered rule text to “that item”, whatever that is?

Derrick goes next, traveling to the Cave from town, clearing out the cave and, rather heroically, taking down the enormous worm single-handedly. Using some newly acquired netting, they attempt to walk away with some spoils, but the valuable bits turn up unsalvageable. Dejected at their clumsiness, Derrick sulks back to town.

In a rare occurrence, all the adventurers end up in town this night. The group discusses the plague induced by the roaches that have long stalked the wilds. Each individual shares tales of their exploits, except for Pokes, who looks uninterested throughout the conversation. The other adventurers wonder if they ever actually cared about hunting in the first place. They retire to their beds late at night.

Proposal: different types of items

Self-killed. Failed by pokes.

Adminned at 05 Apr 2019 23:34:06 UTC

Add to Items:

Cursed versions of items are denoted by having the text “Cursed ” before the name of that item. A cursed item cannot be deleted or destroyed from inventory, all attributes, such as attack power, are considered negative. For any rules that item has, the following words are replaced: “more” and “less”, “gain” and “lose”.

Add to the Item list:

Mystical Amulet
‘‘The runes on this amulet glow with power’‘
*The first spell you cast since the previous respawn costs 1 less to cast. A spell with a negative cost is cast for 0 instead of gaining you AP.

Sword of Extinction
‘‘This sword has many words carved in its side: mammoth, owlbear, kobold ... the list goes on for a long time and you don’t recognize most of them’‘
*When Hunting a monster your Might and Magic are considered 1 more if that monster is the only of its kind in the Wilds.
*Attack power: 3

Camouflage
‘‘Wearing this ridiculous looking getup makes you feel like a dryad but at least the monsters have a harder time finding you at night’‘
*If you are in the Wilds, as an additional step preceding the camping action, gain one less than DICEX health where X is one more than the number of monsters in your current wild at the time of the last respawn.
*Moving from a Wild to Town costs one additional AP.

Duck Whistle
‘‘This makes a sound that attracts a specific monster. Which one is unknown to you’‘
*From the list of non-Dragon monsters, randomly choose one of them. If that monster is in a different wild than you are, change its wild to your current one.
*Destroy after use.

Random Cursed Item
*When this item is added to your inventory, lose it and from the list of items not including items with the word random in their name or the Dragon’s Head, add one of the cursed versions of those items.

Random Item
*When this item is added to your inventory, delete it and from the list of items not including items with the word random in their name or the Dragon’s Head, add one of those items. Roll a DICE4 and on a 3 or less it becomes the cursed version of that item.

Random Regular Item
*When this item is added to your inventory, delete it and from the list of items not including items with the word random in their name or the Dragon’s Head, add one of those items.

Curse Item
*When this item is added to your inventory, lose it and choose a random item in your inventory. Add the text “Cursed ” in front of it.

Add the following Monster to the List of Monster Types

Name: Pinata
Hit Points: 5
Frequency: 5
Ecology: All
Spoils: Random Cursed Item (5), Random Item (8), Random Regular Item (12)
Description: This animated paper mache looks like a botched experiment by some deranged wizard. Hopefully there’s something useful inside.

Name: Shade
Hit Points: 7
Frequency: 10
Ecology: Dragon’s Lair, Shadow Mountain, Eldritch Ruin
Spoils: Curse Item (0), Curse Item (0), Summoning Pebble (6), Shadowy Tome (7)
Description: These accursed souls still wander after death, attempting to escape the dark deal they made

Add to the list of Trades

Proposal: Ticking of the Hourglass

popular 3 to 0. Enacted by Derrick.

Adminned at 05 Apr 2019 16:27:11 UTC

Change:

If they have not done so in 44 hours, the Dungeon Master should set the Time to Nighttime.

To:

If they have not done so in 44 hours, the Dungeon Master or an Adventurer should set the Time to Nighttime.

Change:

If it is Nighttime and they have not done so in 2 hours

To:

If it is Nighttime and they have not done so in 15 minutes

Nothing about changing the time requires the DM to do it, and 15 minutes should be enough warning to let players finish hunting.
