Waking up

My catnap is over, although I can’t guarantee how long I will stay awake. Please unidle me.

Post-Dynastic washup

After a long dynasty, a chance to reflect. (It’s a joke because vampires are famously not reflective.)

Before we get stuck in, I’ll gently remind all those present that the objective is to reminisce and give constructive feedback - not to continue the grudges of the dynasty, nor to create new ones.

Thank you all for playing - I think it was a C+ kind of a dynasty but I hope that you had fun and found something to enjoy in it.

I have returned…

Greetings! After my rather busy summer, I am now ready to unidle and rejoin blognomic. Looking forward to participating in a dynasty from start to finish.

Call for Judgment: [Appendix] Cleaning up atomic fallout

Timed out and failed, 3-7. Josh

Adminned at 02 Aug 2021 10:19:44 UTC

Uphold Josh’s random selection of Jumble as the winner of this dynasty, even if Josh couldn’t legally have made the roll to decide a winner.

In “Atomic Actions”, change

When a Vampire Lord performs an Atomic Action, they must complete all its steps; they must complete them in order; and they may not take any other dynastic action, or achieve victory, until all the steps are complete.

to

When a Vampire Lord performs an Atomic Action, they must complete all its steps; they must complete them in order; and they may not take any other dynastic action, or achieve victory, until either all the steps are complete, or three hours have passed since the start of the action.

With the rules as currently written, if you mess up an atomic action, you can’t perform dynastic actions again ever until the original atomic action is either reverted (causing it to never have happened) or correctly fixed. (There’s a three-hour safety clause in the “you can’t do two dynastic actions at once” rule but not in this one.)

It seems very likely that Josh messed up at least one atomic action this dynasty in a way that wasn’t corrected – technically that means that Josh can’t perform dynastic actions, a status that lasts into future dynasties. This CFJ is primarily designed to unlock that and allow Josh to act again.

(And although this means that Jumble’s win is technically illegal, as Josh couldn’t have made the die roll, I think we should uphold it as having happened anyway, as it obeyed the spirit of the rules and it was a fair way to determine a winner.)

Declaration of Victory: Good Morning

As per “Sunrise”, I have achieved victory.

I actually won Blognomic!!!!  Thought I’d have more to say here lol

(beautiful day!)
(it’s a beautiful day!)

Story Post: Sunrise

Now knowing that Dracula is alive, Richardo, Koda and Drol join forces and invade the Crypt as a trio. The battle is long and bloody; recognising that their power rests in unity, the Vampire Lords all materialise to combat the invaders, but are driven back one by one. Chiiika is dusted by Koda’s magic; lemonfanta is destroyed by Richardo’s holy whip; Kevan, Clucky, and Brendan are caught in a collapsing Sepulchre. Finally, the trio face off against Dracula himself, but are unable to overcome his might. But when all hope appears to be lost, the ceiling above gives way - the Cathedral has crumbled, bringing down the Crypt ceiling with it, flooding the unsanctified chamber with fresh sunlight. Caught beneath the full glare of the day, Dracula is paralysed, giving Richardo the opportunity to gather the last of his strength and plunge a silver-tipped stake into the heart of the demon, dusting him and ridding Zahndorf or his presence… for good.

The Crypt settles.

As the years go by, Zahndorf returns to normal, but there are always rumours of a Vampire Lord who escaped the carnage with his power intact. Perhaps one day he will rise, and seek to claim the mantle of Dracula. But for now, he is only known by one name, whispered to children to get them to behave: the Vampire Lord Jumble.

As per the rule Sunrise, Jumble has achieved victory. Congrats!

While ais523 does not have a EVC on this CfJ, it cannot be considered popular unless it is more than 24 hours old and any attempts to resolve it immediately end with it not being resolved and with the rest of the CfJ doing nothing for that resolution attempt

If ais523’s EVC on this CfJ contains the words “I don’t want it”, or if they have 4 or fewer Puissance, this CfJ does nothing.

Uphold this action performed by ais523 as having been legally performed: https://wiki.blognomic.com/index.php?title=Zahndorf_Crypt&oldid=16197 (which is to say, place a sepulcher belonging to ais523 in the Library of Souls, then reduce his puissance by 4)

Call for Judgment: Clucky, stop illegally marking CFJs as illegal too

Cannot be enacted with 1 vote FOR to 5 AGAINST. Josh

Adminned at 01 Aug 2021 09:23:51 UTC

Revert Clucky’s marking of “Clucky, stop illegally idling me” as illegal, and enact it.

Remove Clucky’s status as an Admin.

What am I supposed to do in a situation where a player edit-wars to illegally mark me as idle, and then illegally marks the CFJ that’s meant to end the edit war as idle, too? This is completely unreasonable conduct from an admin (especially as Josh and Kevan had both previously agreed that the unidling worked, in the thread about it). Even if Clucky did think the CFJ was illegal, the correct reaction was to vote against, or at least leave it to another admin to place the illegal mark, so that we could have a vote about the issue (rather than use admin powers to try to enforce Clucky’s point of view).

As far as I can tell, there’s no recourse available against this sort of abuse of admin powers – we can’t have a CFJ to check whether something was legal or not if it keeps getting illegally marked as illegal. Therefore, the only fix to this issue is to remove the admin powers of admins who are abusing the admin functions to prevent scrutiny of their actions.

Uphold that the following vampire lords were unidle at the time it was posted and all other vampire lords were idle: ais523, Brendan, Chiiika, Clucky, Josh, Jumble, Kevan, lemonfanta, Raven1207.

Unidle any Vampire Lord who has made a post or comment requesting to be unidled after this CfJ was created. Idle any vampire lord who has made a post or comment requesting to be Idled after this CfJ was created.

In “Idle Vampire Lords” replace “the past four days” with “the past 96 hours (4 Days)” wherever it appears, replace “last seven days” with “past 168 Hours (7 days)” and “previous four days” with “past 96 hours (4 days)”

So the idle rule is currently busted. A day is defined to be “unless otherwise stated, refer to a day beginning at and including 00:00:00 UTC, ending when the next day begins”

This makes time periods like “within the previous four days” a bit clunky. It meant that ais’s request to unidle remained invalid until it became the 31st and thus the “previous 4 days” were suddenly the 30th, 29th, 28th and 27th whereas when he made the request it was the 29th, 28th, 27th, and 26th (which includes the day he tried to request to be idled)

It also arguably means that requests to unidle don’t instantly go through, but that is less clear if “past 4 days” means the 31st, 30th, 29th and 28th or 30th, 29th, 28th and 27th.

Regardless seems good to just rubber stamp the list, fix it to be worded in a way that everyone actually interpreted the rule, and move on.

Call for Judgment: Clucky, stop illegally idling me

Adminned at 31 Jul 2021 00:18:47 UTC

Uphold the unidling of ais523 at around 30-07-2021 21:31 UTC.

I was unidled legally – “An Admin may Unidle a Vampire Lord if that Vampire Lord is Idle and has asked to become Unidle in an entry or comment from the past four days, and Idle Admins may Unidle themselves at any time, unless the Vampire Lord who would be Unidled asked to become (or rendered themselves) Idle within the previous four days, and within the current Dynasty.”, and I had not asked to become idle within the previous four days (my most recent request to become idle was at 26-07-2021 21:06:57 UTC, more than four days earlier).

Clucky has, so far, twice attempted to illegally revert this idling, apparently without reading the rule he’s trying to enforce. This really shouldn’t need a CFJ, but as the illegal gamestate-tracking-entity reversions have been repeated, apparently it does?

Proposal: Merit Me (Appendix)

Timed out and failed, 1-1. Josh

Adminned at 01 Aug 2021 20:27:37 UTC

Add a new rule to “Gamestate Tracking” called “Meta Gamestate”

Some Gamestate Information is tracked across multiple dynasties. This includes all gamestate information defined in this rule, which is known as Meta Gamestate (information tracked across multiple dynasties not defined in this rule is not Meta Gamestate). All Meta Gamestate is tracked on the “Meta Gamestate” wiki page. Meta Gamestate for idle Vampire Lords is not tracked, but when a Vampire Lord is unidled, their personal Meta Gamestate retains the last legally endowed values it had, if they are still valid even if they did not go Idle in the same Dynasty.

Each Vampire Lord has a non-negative integer number of Merits which are a piece of Meta Gamestate. Merits are designed to track dynasties in which a Vampire Lord came close but did not achieve victory. A Vampire Lord to be Meritorious if and only if the dynastic rules declare them as such. When a DoV is enacted each Meritorious Vampire Lord earns a Merit (this happens after the Vampire Lord who posted the DoV becomes Richardo von Nestor)

Each Vampire Lord has a non-negative integer number of Assists which are a piece of Meta Gamestate. Assists are designed to track dynasties in which a Vampire Lord assisted another Vampire Lord in achieving victory. When a Vampire Lord posts an ascension address, they may reward one assist to any Vampire Lord (other than themselves) whom, during the most recent dynasty, they believe played an important role in them becoming the new Richardo Von Nestor.

If is still the 15th dynasty of Josh, add the following to the rule “Victory”

A Vampire Lord is Meritorious if there exists no Vampire Lords who have more Blood Mana Crystals than they do.

I donno if this needs to ever needs to be more than just stat tracking but I think it might be fun to start tracking “played a good game/got second place” and “helped with the win”

Proposal: The Order of Vampires

Vetoed. Josh

Adminned at 01 Aug 2021 20:26:54 UTC

Enact a new dynastic rule, “The Scoreboard”:-

The Scoreboard is a list of all Vampire Lords in descending order of how many Blood Mana Crystals they hold, with ties broken in favour of whichever tied Lord has the higher Influence (and ties of that broken in favour of higher Puissance, with ties beyond that not being broken). When the dynasty ends, the Scoreboard should be recorded somewhere.

Idle Vampire Lords are considered to be Vampire Lords for the purpose of this rule, if they were active at any time during the dynasty.

Per today’s earlier discussion on Slack, suggesting trying out a rule for ranking players at the end of this dynasty, with an eye to maybe doing the same for future ones. We could just calculate this informally - there was some talk of it being obvious that Influence was the natural choice of tiebreaker - but to be fair it should really go through the proposal mill.

Proposal: Final Fight

Self-killed. Josh

Adminned at 31 Jul 2021 08:45:35 UTC

If any of Proposal: The Everlasting Night Soon Ends, Proposal: The Crystal Dome or Proposal: One Last Ride were enacted, revert their effects.

Rewrite the rule Victory as follows:

No Vampire Lord may have the name Dracula, nor the name Richardo.

A Showdown is a single Denizen Encounter between Dracula and Richardo. By default, Dracula is considered to have 8 Brutality, and Richardo is considered to have 16 Energy in any Showdown; Richardo’s energy has no upper cap in this situation. The roll deciding a Showdown Encounter must be public.

At any time, a Vampire Lord may privately communicate with Richardo von Nestor their intent to Assist Richardo or Assist Dracula. The next time a Showdown takes place, Richardo must process each such message in order, from oldest to newest, reducing the Blood Mana Crystals of the sender at a rate of 1 Blood Mana Crystal per message, and disregarding the message for the purposes of subsequent steps if the sender doesn’t have any Blood Mana Crystals; he then increases Richardo’s Energy by the triangular number of the number of Assist Richardo messages he received, and he increases Dracula’s Brutality by 5 for each Assist Dracula messages he received.

If Richardo’s roll in a Showdown is higher than Dracula’s Brutality then Dracula is dust: the Vampire Lord with the most Blood Mana Crystals (selected randomly from any candidates tied for the highest number) has achieved Victory.

If Richardo’s roll in a Showdown is lower than Dracula’s Brutality then Dracula is ascendant; Richardo von Nestor must select a random Vampire Lord, with their chance weighted by the number of Blood Mana Crystals they have, and that Vampire Lord has achieved Victory.

If Richardo’s roll is equal to Dracula’s Brutality then roll again.

If it is August, then a Showdown is brewing in Zahndorf and Vampire Lords can take no dynastic actions other than Distilling, Assisting Richardo or Assisting Dracula. During August, Richardo von Nestor may take a Distilling action on behalf of any Vampire Lord, to spend that Vampire Lord’s Puissance and Influence and increase that Vampire Lord’s Blood Mana Crystals accordingly.

When the Crypt Awakens in August, run a Showdown, make a post to the blog summarising its events, and then immediately skip the rest of the Enter the Crypt Atomic Action.

A more flavourful conclusion.

Proposal: One Last Ride

Quorum against, 2 votes to 5. Josh

Adminned at 31 Jul 2021 08:45:05 UTC

Add the following to Richardo’s Journey, after the “For each Vampire Lord without a Sepulchre, and with an Influence above zero, set their Influence to zero.” step

* Bring about the Arrival of Penolpa by performing the following steps
** Sanctify any rooms which have the effect “Cursed”
** For any Vampire Lord who has influence which is at least 3 plus the number of Blood Mana Crystals they have and whose Puissance is at least 2, perform the distilling action on that Vampire Lord’s behalf. Repeat until no such Vampire Lord’s remain
** Square the number of Blood Mana Crystals each Vampire Lord has
** Select a random Blood Mana Crystal from among those held by all Vampire Lords. The Vampire Lord who holds that crystal achieves victory and must be named in the post to the blog summarising this Enter the Crypt action
** Set the Crypt to be Cleansed

Add a rule called “Sunrise”

If the Crypt is Cleansed (by default it isn’t), no Dynastic actions may be taken by Vampire Lords or Richardo von Nestor (other completing an Enter the Crypt action which began while the Crypt was not Cleansed)

Story Post: Drol’s First Expedition

As the moon rose over Zahndorf, a hooded figure rode its horse at a flat gallop towards the Cathedral. Father Bartlemas had been awakened and was stationed at the door; his hand shook as he grasped the silver crucifix tightly in his hand. The stranger dismounted and strode purposefully up the steps, but Bartlemas tried to stand in its way; “Why are you here”, he cried, but the hooded figure barely broke its stride on the marble, only tilted up its head to reveal a slight smile made of razor-sharp incisors. “Demon, this is a place of God,” stammered the cleric, taking a fearful half-step back, but as he did so he felt a hand at his back - for suddenly, the stranger wasn’t on the steps any more, it was behind him, its cool hand on the back of his head, peeling back the hair on his scalp to reveal the tattoo that the demon has placed upon his skin. “Ah,” said the stranger in a neutral, emotionless voice, “Well, since you asked… I’m here to kill Dracula.”

Moments later, the body of the priest was cooling on the marble of his own defiled Cathedral, and the traveller was moving intently towards the cellar, the other clerics all now keen to make themselves scarce. At the entrance to the cellar it found a chest with a family crest emblazoned on it in red and blue - “The von Nestors”, said the stranger, before muttering an incantation and carefully opening it. Inside it found a Depleted Ring of Warding, which it pocketed, before heading down.

The Crypt Entrance was a dazzling display of purloined religious icons, many of which had been defiled. The stranger threw back its hood, to reveal an ageless, androgynous face framed by straight black hair, and the distinctive long teeth of a vampire: Drol Eripmav. Drol surveyed the scene and found evidence of footprints: at least two sets, human, and others besides, heading in all four directions. But the south and west exits had been barricaded, and the footprints had been east recently, so it headed north.

To the north it found itsself in a weirdly featureless room whose floor was streaked with blood. It immediately spotted a Vampire Lord’s sigil; it pressed the ring against it, dispelling its magic, just before a swarm of small hockey-puck like creatures with razor-sharp mandibles sprung out of the walls, gathering around it and slicing deep into its flesh, causing a Grievous Injury and damaging its now-empty item pouch. Swearing, it leapt away with superhuman speed, to a ledge containing an average chest; it opened it to fid a Roc’s Feather and then made a hasty retreat north. A glyph owned by the Vampire Lords lemonfanta, Jumble and Clucky responded to the violence.

Here it found itself in the midst of a recent rockfall. Large chunks of masonry were still falling, but Drol was more agile than that; it easily sidestepped the worst of the wreckage, but still tripped over some light scree, taking a Light Wound.

He passed through the Blinding Cave, a chamber of burnished light, and then down into the Nullith, in which it found and slaughtered a Statue of a Distorted Idol. It headed west from there, looking with a blank lack of surprised at a blood-splattered chicken coop, before an enchantment in the room activated and forced it back into the Nullith. From there it headed South.

He crossed over a rickety bridge, slipping and incurring a Light Wound as it did so. “Death by a thousand cuts,” it muttered, failing to notice an average chest on an outcropping as it made its exit.

The bridge took it south, to the Cliff Edge, where it paused and admired the vista of the Zahn as is weaved through the rock beneath it. Then another small rock separated from the overhang above and struck it on the shoulder. “It’s almost like you don’t want me here,” it said dryly as it tended to its Light Wound. It spotted a door leading back into the crypt to the east, and took it.

The Entrance Vestibule was diminished by the presence within it of a huge-hulking beast, whose elephantine tusks were pocked with shards of masonry. A stair muncher! Drol knew that it was not strong enough to face this adversary head on - but wait. There was an average chest tucked into the recess where a statue of a young woman had once stood; silently, Drol slipped into the shadow and kicked it open, finding a Holy Tincture. It grimaced, but swilled it down; the blessed drink burned on the way down, but it still filled it with vitality. “Now,” it said, holding out a hand and issuing a psychic command to its weapon, a razor-thin ivory blade that, of its own volition, sprung from its scabbard and whistled into the air, curving and flowing before - with a sickening jolt - slamming itself right into the eye of the Stair Muncher, killing it instantly. Drol took a moment to acknowledge the gigantic beast before continuing to the east.

The next room was a well made of a shattered spiral staircase, in the centre of which was a deep pool of blood. In the middle of that pool, Drol could see a figure, bathing - a humanoid figure, with long blonde hair and a flowing moustache. The figure heard Drol enter and turned to face it, and suddenly Drol found itself - the first person in centuries - looking into the face of Dracula. No words were exchanged before combat was met, but the young wanderer was no match for the feared conqueror of the steppes; after a few moments in which it took three Light Wounds from its own weapon, Drol hissed and leapt for the east exit. Dracula did not pursue it, but if found itself immediately in a dead end - so had no choice but to go back and incur three more Light Wounds. It limped away into the Entrance Vestibule and then made good its escape.

Remembering the crest of von Nestor that it had seen, it decided to seek out the local chapter of that storied family and seek assistance.

Proposal: The Crystal Dome

Quorum reached. Passes 5-1—Clucky

Adminned at 31 Jul 2021 00:46:29 UTC

If the proposal “The Everlasting Night Soon Ends” enacted, undo its changes to the ruleset.

Enact a new rule, “Sunrise”:-
.........

If it is August, then the sun has risen over Zahndorf and Vampire Lords can take no dynastic actions other than Distilling. During August, Richardo von Nestor may take a Distilling action on behalf of any Vampire Lord, to spend that Vampire Lord’s Puissance and Influence and increase that Vampire Lord’s Blood Mana Crystals accordingly.

A Vampire Lord is Drained if their Influence is less than 3 plus the number of Blood Mana Crystals they have, or their Puissance is less than 2. If all Vampire Lords are Drained, Richardo von Nestor may select a random Blood Mana Crystal from among those held by all Vampire Lords: that Vampire Lord achieves victory.

The Organ is never considered to be playing during August, nor in July after 4:25pm UTC on the 29th; this takes precedence over the Richardo’s Journey rule.

A more straightforward take on The Everlasting Night Soon Ends.

Proposal: Less crunchy

Self-killed. Failed by Brendan.

Adminned at 30 Jul 2021 22:19:38 UTC

If Proposal: The Mysterious Clock has not been enacted, this proposal does nothing.

In the rule Power Actions, change

All Power Actions cost 1 Puissance more per two Vampire Lords (other than the Vampire Lord performing the Power Action) with 3 or fewer Puissance at the time at which the Power Action is undertaken.

to

All Power Actions become more expensive when delayed, through a mechanism called the Rumination Surcharge, which is a Puissance cost that is added to the cost of all Power Actions. The Rumination Surcharge is worked out as follows:

* If more than half of all Vampire Lords have more than 3 Puissance, the Rumination Surcharge is zero.
* If at least half of all Vampire Lords have 3 Puissance or fewer, the Rumination Surcharge is one.
* If only one Vampire Lord has more than 3 Puissance then the Rumination Surcharge is an additional two.

Proposal: Betterment of the Ruleset, one Proposal at a Time #Replacement_Edition [Appendix]

4 votes against means quorum can not be reached without a change of vote.—Clucky

Adminned at 30 Jul 2021 15:58:00 UTC

Adds a new Subrule, named “Replacement Effects” under Clarifications, “-“ is considered to be bullet points::

There may be some text in the Ruleset that can watch the game and replace other actions that are happening, often denoted with “instead”, “instead of” or “is replaced with”.
- A Replacement Rule consists of two parts, the Gamestate Events to be watched for and the Replaced Events. (e.g. “Whenever a Vampire Lord gains Mana, they gain that many Crystals instead.” is a Replacement Rule which watches the Gamestate for “when a Vampire Lord gains Mana” and replaces that event with “that Vampire Lord gaining that many Crystals”)
- A Replacement Rule may only invoke itself once whenever a Gamestate event that matches the Gamestate Events to be watched for happens.  (e.g. If “Whenever a Vampire Lord gains Mana, they gain twice that Mana instead” is in the Ruleset, and Haruka, a Vampire Lord gains Mana, they only get twice that Mana but not Infinite Mana.)
- If a Replacement Rule replaces some Event, the Original Event is considered to have never happened, instead the Replaced Events are considered to have happened and in turn, can trigger other parts of the Ruleset. (e.g. If “Whenever a Vampire Lord gains Mana, they gain that many Crystals instead.” and “Whenever a Vampire Lord gains Mana, they become Dusted” exists in the Ruleset, and Haruka gains 5 Mana, Haruka will not be Dusted since the Mana-gaining event was replaced with gaining Crystals and such, the Original Mana-gaining effect is considered to have not happened at all.)
- If one or more Replacement Rule is Triggered and would replace an event, but that event never happens possibly due to Pritorisations, the Replacement Rule simply doesn’t do anything. (e.g. If “If a rule would ever have no name, it is instead given the name of the proposal that created it, or (if this is not possible) the name “Unnamed Rule” exists in the Appendix, and “Whenever there is a rule with no name, Haruka achieves Victory” exists in the Dynastic Rule, and there is a Rule having no name, although “Haruka achieves Victory” would be triggered, “Giving the No-Named Rule a Name” in the Appendix takes precedence and gives the rule with no name a name, thus there will be no instants when there is a rule with no name and so, Haruka can’t achieve Victory using “Whenever there is a rule with no name, Haruka achieves Victory”.)

Some Ruleset prerequisites that Kevan mentioned in the original proposal of Dependency Issue. Open to discussion in the 8 hrs of proposal modification timeslot - although it’s most certainly a protosal, I don’t think it’s good to just put the discussion inside the Slack and possibly get deleted since there’s a 10k message limit.

Proposal: The Everlasting Night Soon Ends

Self-killed. Failed by Kevan.

Adminned at 30 Jul 2021 11:19:51 UTC

If Richardo von Nestor voted AGAINST on this Proposal, this Proposal will have no effect instead.

Then, Enacts a new Rule, “Final Darkness”, “-“ is considered to be bullet points;

As a Atomic Action, Richardo von Nestor may End the Darkness.

For each Vampire Lord, Richardo von Nestor must perform the following on their behalf:
- Distill, ignoring Puissance cost. If at the end of the Distill Resolution such Vampire Lord may take a Distill Power Action again, considering only the Influence Cost; repeat the entirety of this bullet point.
- If such Vampire Lord have a Sepulchre, Richardo von Nestor must Free them from Unlife by Collapsing their Sepulchre.

Then, if there are more or as much FOR Votes with EVC “Day” than “Night”, Adds the following bullet point to the “Enter the Crypt” Atomic Action at the bottom of the list, “-” considered to be a bullet point;

- If the current time is 0600 1 August 2021 or later, Richardo von Nestor must End the Darkness.

Then, if there are more FOR Votes with EVC “Night” then “Day”, Adds the following bullet point to the “Enter the Crypt” Atomic Action at the bottom of the list, “-” considered to be a bullet point:

- If there are 2 or more Expeditions that happened after 0000 29 July 2021, including this one, Richardo von Nestor must End the Darkness.

Then, Adds the following bullet point to the “Enter the Crypt” Atomic Action at the bottom of the list, “-” considered to be a bullet point:

- Make a post to the blog summarising the End of Darkness action if Richardo have done the End the Darkness action. It is recommended that this include
any changes made to the gamestate of any Vampire Lords as a result of this action.

Then, Enacts a new Rule, “Dawn”:

A number of Eternity Crystals exists equal to the sum of the total amount of Blood Mana Crystals every Vampire Lord holds. Each Eternity Crystal is owned by a Vampire Lord, such that the number of Eternity Crystals each Vampire Lord holds is equal to the Blood Mana Crystal such Vampire Lord have.

If no Vampire Lord have done so and if Richardo von Nestor have Ended the Darkness, a Vampire Lord may choose a Eternity Crystal at random. Upon doing so, the owner of the chosen Eternity Crystal achieves victory.

If the Witching Hour is within 12 hours of the time of the enactment of this Proposal, extend Witching Hour by 12 hours. If Witching Hour is in the past when this Proposal is enacted, set the Witching Hour to the current time plus 12 hours.

Patched The Everlasting Night Ends, and adds choice into how much should be the remaining time.

In “Representations of the Gamestate” after

One wiki update may contain one or more alterations, or one alteration may be split over multiple updates, as long as it is clear what is happening and the alterations are otherwise legal.

add

If multiple alterations are performed in the same update, and one of those alterations is found to have been illegal, all alterations performed in that update are considered to have been illegal.

So Chiiika accidentally bought 10 puissance worth of stuff while only having 9 puissance to spend.

This makes an interesting problem, because from a gameplay perspective she performed three actions in a row, two of which were legal and one of which was not legal due to her not having enough Puissance to make the purchase. But from a game tracking perspective, its impossible to know which of the two purchases she intended to make first.

I think the reasonable thing to do in this situation is just to go “they were all illegal”

There are some open questions as to if we need a slightly better resolution mechanic. Under the wording I have here, it would make Chiiika’s purchasing a favor in that update also illegal even though its legality can be clearly inferred. But I didn’t want to overcomplicate things by trying to word this in a way that makes it so that only the purchases but not the favor update are illegal (especially when the favor purchase might’ve only intended to go through if everything else went through as well)

In “Vampire Lords” replace “Each Vampire Lord has a Puissance, which is a publicly tracked non-negative integer that defaults to 10.” with “Each Vampire Lord has a Puissance, which is a publicly tracked non-negative integer that defaults to 0. When a Vampire Lord unidles, if they were never previously unidle during this dynasty their Puissance is set to 0.”

In Ritual Chambers remove “If there is a Denizen named Dracula, or if a Room includes the Effect “Richardo encounters Dracula’s Sepulchre”, then Ancient Actions may not be taken, and the Puissance of Vampire Lords defaults to 0 instead of 10.”

Remove the rule “The Ancients”

There will always be a Denizen named dracula or a room with the effect “Richardo encounters Dracula’s Sepulchre” so lets get rid of the if clause and just make the changes perminate

Proposal: The Mysterious Clock

Passes 5-2. - Jumble

Adminned at 29 Jul 2021 13:55:16 UTC

If Proposal: 3 Witch, 3 Furious was enacted, revert it.

In the rule Richardo’s Journey, change the text

Witching Hour is a publicly tracked date and time. When Richardo von Nestor or a Vampire Lord Winds the Clock, they take the current time, add 24 hours, roll a DICE24 and add the resulting number in hours, and that becomes the new Witching Hour. Whenever the Crypt Settles, Richardo von Nestor Winds the Clock. If the current time is after Witching Hour, the Organ is Playing. Otherwise the Organ is not Playing. While the Organ is Playing, no Power Actions may be performed.

to read as follows:

Whenever a Vampire Lord takes a Power Action, if the Witching Hour is less than 12 hours in the future, they must set the Witching Hour to be 12 hours from the time at which the Power Action was undertaken, unless they are the only Vampire Lord with more than 3 Puissance.

Add the following to the end of the rule Power Actions:

All Power Actions cost 1 Puissance more per two Vampire Lords (other than the Vampire Lord performing the Power Action) with 3 or fewer Puissance at the time at which the Power Action is undertaken.

Resetting back to a maybe slightly more stable clock mechanic, with some added costs for late movers.

Proposal: Dependency Issue [Appendix]

SK’d. - Jumble

Adminned at 28 Jul 2021 23:21:45 UTC

Add a new bullet point at the top level to the beginning of “Prioritisation”, “-“ is considered to be bullet points:

- If two or more parts of the Ruleset contradicts each other, and if one or more part of the Ruleset is Dependent on another part of the Ruleset, where Dependent is defined as if applying the latter-mentioned part of the Ruleset first or last would change the scope, the effects of the before-mentioned part of the Ruleset; then the before-mentioned part of the Ruleset is said to be Dependent on the latter part of the Ruleset. In such case, the latter-part which is the independent part will take effect first and the before-mentioned part which is the dependent part will take effect last, regardless of precedence construed in the next bullet point. (e.g. if the rules “Vampire Lords may gain three Crystals as a Action”, “If any Vampire Lord gains Crystals, they gain 3 more Crystals instead” and “If a Vampire Lord gain 4 or less Crystals in an Action, they gain 0 Crystals instead” exist in the Ruleset, and Haruka; a Vampire Lord activates “Vampire Lords may gain three Crystals” as a Action, they gain 6 crystal instead of 0 since “If a Vampire Lord gain 4 or less Crystals” is dependent on “If any Vampire Lord gains Crystals, they gain 3 more Crystals instead”.)

A dependency system to hopefully logically resolve another chain of problems which happened in this Dynasty for the future Dynasties.

Proposal: The Everlasting Night Ends

Self-killed. Failed by Kevan.

Adminned at 28 Jul 2021 18:01:17 UTC

If Richardo von Nestor voted AGAINST on this Proposal, this Proposal will have no effect instead.

Revert all Distill actions from the posting of this Proposal until the passing of this Proposal.

If Call for Judgment: When Life Gives You Jumble, Make Lemonaid [Pressing] is Pending, Pass and Enact it.

Then, Enacts a new Rule, “Final Darkness”, “-“ is considered to be bullet points;

As a Atomic Action, Richardo von Nestor may End the Darkness.

For each Vampire Lord, Richardo von Nestor must perform the following on their behalf:
- Distill, ignoring Puissance cost. If at the end of the Distill Resolution such Vampire Lord may take a Distill Power Action again, ignoring Puissance Cost; repeat the entirety of this bullet point.
- If such Vampire Lord have a Sepulchre, Richardo von Nestor must Free them from Unlife by Collapsing their Sepulchre.

Richardo von Nestor immediately Ends the Darkness.

Then, Enacts a new Rule, “Dawn”:

Any Vampire Lord who was not a Vampire Lord on 1700 28th July 2021 is not to be considered a Vampire Lord for the remainder of this rule.

If no Vampire Lord have done so, a Vampire Lord may choose a Eternity Crystal at random. Upon doing so, the owner of the chosen Eternity Crystal achieves victory.

This was a fun Dynasty, but all good things must come to a close before they turn for the worst; though how to end it should be Josh’s wish, so this is a proposal.

Rename the Denizen called “Dracula” to “Alucard”

Remove the following text from Ritual Chambers

When the Crypt Settles, if Richardo was Lightly or Grievously Wounded in a Ritual Chamber, or if Richardo collapsed a Dracula’s Sepulchre without Dusting Dracula, then a random Ordinary room gains a Denizen with the name of Dracula, with the following statistics: Brutality 3, Cunning 5, the Bloodsoaked and Evasive traits, and a Sycophancy of None.

When the Crypt Settles, if Richardo encountered and defeated the Denizen Dracula, then a random Ordinary room gains the following effect, which may only be added to a room under this circumstance and may not otherwise be added to any room:

Richardo encounters Dracula’s Sepulchre
A room with the effect “Richardo encounters Dracula’s Sepulchre” should be treated as a Sepulchre for the purposes of collapsing a Sepulchre in the rule Sepulchres. If Richardo moves to a room with the “Richardo encounters Dracula’s Sepulchre” effect while holding a Silver-Tipped Stake then Dracula is Dusted.

Add a new rule called “Dracula”

Dracula is an entity in the game that has a location, which is a room on the map, and a number of wounds, which is a non-negative integer and by default is 0. Both his location and his wounds are publicly tracked. If Dracula ever has 12 or more Wounds, Dracula is Dust.

If Dracula’s Location is ever not a valid Lit Ordinary room or is Purified, any Vampire Lord or Richardo von Nestor may set his location to a random Lit Ordinary room which is not Purified.

When the Crypt Settles, Richardo von Nestor sets Dracula’ Location to a random Lit Ordinary room which is not Purified

When Richardo Von Nestor Encounters Dracula, if he is holding a Silver-Tipped Stake, he uses that item and Dracula earns 6 wounds. Otherwise, if he is holding a Elaborate Crossbow, he uses that item and Dracula gains 3 wounds. Otherwise, if he is holding a Rusty Crossbow he uses that item and Dracula earns 3 wounds. Otherwise, Dracula earns 1 Wound. Then, if Dracula now has fewer than 12 wounds, Richardo Von Nestor is grievously injured.

add the following step above the “Encounter any other Denizens in his current location, in a secretly random order” step in Richardo’s Journey

If Richardo’s Current Room matches Dracula’s Location, Richardo Encounters Dracula

Sets Dracula’s Location to a random Lit Ordinary room which is not Purified

Witching Hour is a publicly tracked date and time. If no Enter the Crypt action has taken place since 10am on 27 July 2021, the second paragraph of this rule is ruletext and the text in italics is flavour text.

Witching Hour is a date and time that is privately tracked by Richardo von Nestor.

There is a variable called the Organ, which may be Playing or Not Playing, and which defaults to Not Playing. While the Organ is Playing, no Power Actions may be performed.

When Richardo von Nestor Winds the Clock, select a random time between 16:00 UTC and 23:00 UTC and a random number of days between 1 and 3; he added the number of days selected to the current date, which, combined with the selected time, becomes the new Witching Hour.

If the current time is after Witching Hour, Richardo von Nestor may set the Organ is Playing. Whenever the Crypt Settles, Richardo von Nestor sets the Organ to Not Playing and Winds the Clock.

As a Power Action with a cost of 0, a Vampire Lord may Observe the Mansion. When a Vampire Lord Observes the Manion they must spend between 1 and 3 Puissance and then privately notify Richardo von Nestor of their Observing the Manion action. When Richardo von Nestor is notified of a Vampire Lord’s Observing the Mansion Action, he must respond based on how much Puissance the Vampire Lord spent carrying that Action out; if 1 Puissance was spent he should provide the time but not the day on which Witching Hour occurs; if 2 Puissance was spent he should provide the day but not the time on which Witching Hour occurs; if 3 Puissance was spent he should give the exact date and time of Witching Hour.

A reproposal of Which Witch, except the range is restricted to the main hours of activity on the blog: 4pm to 11pm UTC.

If Call for Judgment: Dirt is Dirt, Dust is Dust 2.0 [Pressing] has been enacted, this CfJ does nothing. If it is still pending, fail it.

If Call for Judgment: Agree to Disagree [Pressing] has been failed, this does nothing. If it still pending, enact it.

Uphold the stat changes made at the conclusion of the Enter the Crypt action described as Richardo’s Sixteenth Expedition in their entirety.

Remove 25 Influence from Lemonfanta. If Jumble has a Glyph in the Library of Souls, remove it, unless other Vampire Lords are also named on the glyph, in which case remove Jumble’s name from it. In the rule Vampire Lords, after the text “changes which would increase their Influence”, add “(including changes which would accrue to their Enthraller)”.

If the Witching Hour is within 24 hours of the time of the enactment of this CfJ, extend Witching Hour by 24 hours. If Witching Hour is in the past when this CfJ is enacted, wind the clock.

Similar to Agree to Disagree: a CfJ asserting that the rules behaved in an expected way, with no funny business. The competing priorities drawn out in Dirt is Dirt probably can’t be resolved in the pressure cooker of a tactical environment, and certainly not with a bunch of ticking clocks, so it seems wisest to me to fix the proximate error and let play continue on the basis that everything behaved the way that it was expected to.

Call for Judgment: [Appendix] An arbitrary prioritisation tiebreak

Failed unpopular, 0 votes to 5. Josh

Adminned at 27 Jul 2021 07:55:42 UTC

Add a new builet point at the top level to the end of “Prioritisation”:

  • If the above precedence rules fail to resolve an ambiguity that depends on the order in which rules are applied (e.g. because there are multiple internally consistent sequences in which rules could be applied, or because a contradiction is not covered by the cases above), apply the ambiguity by applying the rules in the following order, skipping any parts of rules that cannot be applied due to being contradicted by earlier rules (or parts of rules) in the sequence:
    1. All Appendix rules, in order from first to last;
    2. All Core rules, in order from first to last;
    3. All Special Case rules, in order from first to last;
    4. All Dynastic rules, in order from first to last.

If the order of applying sentences/clauses within a single rule matters, apply them in the order in which they are written in the rule.

Because it seems clear by this point that our current precedence tiebreaks don’t cover all situations (especially the situation in which precedence matters but no contradiction exists), let’s add an arbitrary tiebreak that does cover all situations, even if it’s arbitrary.

For what it’s worth, this arbitrary tiebreak was taken from the original ruleset of the original nomic: “110. In a conflict between a mutable and an immutable rule, the immutable rule takes precedence and the mutable rule shall be entirely void.” “211. If two or more mutable rules conflict with one another, or if two or more immutable rules conflict with one another, then the rule with the lowest ordinal number takes precedence.”

Probably this should be a proposal but I’m out of slots, and I’ve been told that this sort of thing is acceptable as a CFJ nowadays (and it does help to resolve an ambiguity that’s currently causing issues).

Proposal: The Sigil/Glyph Exclusion Principle

Passes 5-0. Enacted by Brendan.

Adminned at 28 Jul 2021 00:20:49 UTC

In “Glyphs and Sigils”, change the sentence starting

If a room contains a Sigil

to

A Vampire Lord cannot create a Glyph in a room, nor be added to a Glyph in that room, if they have a Sigil in that room. A Vampire Lord cannot engrave a Sigil in a room if they own a Glyph in that room.

A hopefully scam-free fix to the Glyph/Sigil rule, allowing us to start creating Glyphs again.

Because this is a change rather than a clarification, I’m writing it as a proposal rather than a CFJ.

A counter-CFJ to Josh’s: just as we did earlier in the dynasty with the room-relighting scam, let’s uphold what the rules say, even if it puts someone at a disadvantage. Earlier in the dynasty, I was placed at a disadvantage when someone exploited the exact words of a room to remove my Influence-generating machine; this is the exact same situation here, just with a different set of people.

Because the current wording of the rule isn’t that fun for gameplay, we can change it – but that should be by proposal, not CFJ, as it’s a change rather than a clarification.

Uphold the award of any Influence gained up until the time at which this CfJ was posted as a result of the presence of those Glyphs, except for the specific quantity (25 Influence) awarded to lemonfanta as a result of her Enthrallment of Jumble in Richardo’s Fifteenth Expedition, which is neither upheld nor removed from the gamestate as a result of this CfJ.

In the rule Glyphs and Sigils, change “If a room contains a Sigil from a Vampire Lord then no Glyph may be created for that Vampire Lord, and vice-versa.” to “If a room contains a Sigil from a Vampire Lord then no Glyph may be carry that Vampire Lord’s name in that room, and vice-versa.”

Extend Witching Hour by 24 hours after the time at which this CfJ was enacted.

I don’t think that ais is wrong, per se, in interpreting the strict text of the rules, but I do think that the ‘uphold’ mechanic exists for exactly that purpose: for settling issues that arise that derail dynastic gameplay too significantly, and allowing us to play on on the basis that the rule meant what we always thought it meant.

To be clear, I think that the impact of this is significant, and particularly apportioned to three players who set up a good machine on the basis of the assumption that the rules were what they were. But other players are affected as well, and I don’t see that a strict application of the bug leads to a more fun game for anyone, so let’s roll it back.

Proposal: Coffin Nails

Reached quorum 5 votes to 0. Enacted by Kevan.

To “Ritual Chambers”, add:-

If there is a Denizen named Dracula, or if a Room includes the Effect “Richardo encounters Dracula’s Sepulchre”, then Ancient Actions may not be taken, and the Puissance of Vampire Lords defaults to 0 instead of 10.

An endgame portcullis on new players, now that we’ve changed the game to (and may yet not escape from) perform-actions-at-23:59 mode, where there’s much less downside to a big, obvious move from a late accomplice.

So, it turns out that most of our Glyphs don’t exist

“If a room contains a Sigil from a Vampire Lord then no Glyph may be created for that Vampire Lord, and vice-versa.”

This seems pretty clear to me: if you have a Sigil, you can’t have a Glyph. Nothing about this rule says it has to be the same room.

As such, I’ve recalculated the Zahndorf Crypt page to show what everyone’s statistics should be, allowing for the fact that the glyphs (apart from Bucky’s, who wasn’t a Vampire Lord and anyway didn’t have a Sigil) were never legally created. Note that as far as I can tell, the Puissance spent on Glyphs is still spent, because you choose the list of features for a room separately from actually adding them (they just fail to be created). Only one action failed because of this: Chiiika’s most recent Distil. (Unlike what I said earlier, Brendan’s Distil+Shatter worked: he had enough influence for them because he gained it from the Stair Muncher, which is a Denizen not a Glyph.)

At 16 Jul 2021 10:56:49 UTC, we upheld all Influence gains from Glyphs via CFJ. Therefore, I haven’t reverted Influence gains from before that time, even if they would have been illegal, due to the CFJ producing the influence even if the Glyphs themselves didn’t exist.

Call for Judgment: Dirt is Dirt, Dust is Dust

Due to having been edited after voting started, this can no longer have any effect on the ruleset, and is being failed on that basis. Josh

Each Vampire Lord has an Influence, which is a publicly tracked non-negative integer defaulting to 0. While a Vampire Lord does not have a Sepulchre, changes which would increase their Influence instead do nothing, will not be considered to have accrued any Influence for purpose of being Enthralled, and any Vampire Lord or Richardo von Nestor may set their Influence to 0.

If there weren’t Influence to be got via rule “While a Vampire Lord does not have a Sepulchre, changes which would increase their Influence instead do nothing.”, you can’t redirect the gains via rule “Any Puissance or Influence that would accrue to an Enthralled Vampire Lord instead accrues to the Vampire Lord who Enthralls them”, since you can’t even accrue them!

Story Post: Richardo’s Sixteenth Expedition

Having heard Koda’s story and seen her certainty that an ancient evil has been unleashed, Richardo decided that he needed to see what was happening in the Crypt for himself. So once again he strapped the shield to his arm and ventured into the night. Father Bartlebas fixed him with a baleful eye as he entered the Cathedral, but said nothing; the von Nestor name still commanded too much respect in this town for the priests to bar him passage from the Crypt.

From the familiar mosaic of the Crypt Entrance, Richardo took stock. Koda had described the recent state of the rooms to the south and west, and someone had erected a rushed but sturdy barricade to the north, so he proceeded to the east.

In the Library of Souls, Richardo was shocked to find the usually placid books in a frenzy. They were channelling power to the souls of the Vampire Lords as usual, but now they were also thrashing and snapping at the ends of their chains, and flying from shelf to shelf as if possessed. Could this be due to the communion that Koda had had with them on a recent expedition? Richardo could speculate, but not for long, as a steel-cornered book whizzed off of a shelf and clattered into the side of his head, causing a Grievous Injury. Knocked off of his feet, he spotted an average chest under a reading desk; staying low he scuttled over to it, and flipped it open, finding a Depleted Ring of Warding. Keeping his head down he surveyed the room; the north exit was blocked, the south led to the familiarity of the Blood Pit, and the west was where he had come from, so he continued east. The Glyph bearing the legends of lemonfanta, Jumble and Clucky slurped eagerly at the blood Richardo had left behind him.

He found himself in a new environment: some demonic alchemist had set up a lab here, and the room was full of alembics and burners and leather-bound phylacteries. He wandered into the room, staring at the equipment in confusion and wonder. He picked one of the finished potions, which were stopped and sealed with wax; it said “LETHAL POISON” so he put it down. He picked up another; it said “GATORADE” so he unstoppered it, took a sniff, and then took a small slug. There was an immediate sensation of burning sweetness on his tongue and a crackling, burning on the roof of his mouth, and then an acid shock as is passed through his oesophagus; with a small scream he started hopping around the room. The potion caused him a Light Injury but while hopping he tripped over a small stool and fell face-first into a tall glass apparatus, shattering it and incurring a Grievous Wound‘s worth of cuts to the face. Only at this point did he notice that the entire floor of this room was another Glyph to lemon, Jumble and Clucky. He scrambled out of the room, to the East.

After the horrors of the Library and the Lab, the relatively straightforward horror of the bunny head room was almost comforting. Richardo paused a moment to take stock, and then headed north.

He had to squeeze through a gap in the vine to get into the Subterranean Hothouse, but he was careful and did so without injury. However, as soon as he was through the magic of the room pushed him straight back the way he came, causing the sharp thorns on the vines to rip and pull at his flesh, causing a Light Wound.

Back in the Bunny Head room, this time spotted a Sepulchre belonging to the Vampire Lord Brendan. “Oh good,” he said, “someone who might be having a worse day than me.” He grabbed a pickaxe from the pile of implements used to torture the giant rabbit and used it to smash in the side of the huge stone coffin; immediately the room started to shake and tear itself apart. “Rest in peace, bunny,” he said, surveying his choices; south or back west, to the Lab. He started south, but then remembered that he had seen a potion in the Lab labelled “Elixier of Healing”, and that sounded promising, so he went back to the lab.

The Elixier of Healing was, of course, poison. Richardo took a Grievous Injury and a Light Wound and then retreated, demoralised.

Stat changes:
Vampire Lord - Puissance - Influence
ais523 - 5 - 0
Brendan - 6 - 3
Chiiika - 6 - 1
Clucky - 7 - 25
Jumble - 7 - 0
Kevan - 6 - 1
lemonfanta - 6 - 50
Raven1207 - 5 - 0

So there’s something in here that may be open to dispute.

Vampire Lords says

While a Vampire Lord does not have a Sepulchre, changes which would increase their Influence instead do nothing, and any Vampire Lord or Richardo von Nestor may set their Influence to 0.

We have commonly inferred that to mean that VLs without Sepulchres don’t gain Influence, but that’s not what it says: it says “changes which would increase their Influence”. But Unlife says:

Any Puissance or Influence that would accrue to an Enthralled Vampire Lord instead accrues to the Vampire Lord who Enthralls them

So Jumble gaining Influence does not increase Jumble’s Influence. That means that he accrues it, even though he doesn’t have a Sepulchre, which means lemon accrues it, which means she gets paid for two crypt entrances, six grievous injuries, six room entrances, four light injuries and two chest openings in one run.

I don’t know if this is intentional or not but it’s a great scam!

Anyway, CfJ if you disagree.

Proposal: Witches Get Stiches

Adminned at 27 Jul 2021 16:33:27 UTC

In the rule “Richardo’s Journey” replace whichever of the following is current in that rule

While the Organ is Playing, no Power Actions may be performed.

or

Witching Hour is a date and time that is privately tracked by Richardo von Nestor.

There is a variable called the Organ, which may be Playing or Not Playing, and which defaults to Not Playing. If the current time is after Witching Hour, Richardo von Nestor may set the Organ is Playing. While the Organ is Playing, no Power Actions may be performed.

When Richardo von Nestor Winds the Clock, they take the current time, add 24 hours, roll a DICE24 and add the resulting number in hours, and that becomes the new Witching Hour. Whenever the Crypt Settles, Richardo von Nestor sets the Organ to Not Playing and Winds the Clock. When Richardo von Nestor is Wound Up (by default he is not Wound Up) then he may perform a Quick Wind, which works the same as a normal Wind the Clock but he skips the “add 24 hours” step and must make a blog post announcing that he has done so. He then ceases to be Wound Up.

As a Power Action with a cost of 0, a Vampire Lord may Observe the Mansion. When a Vampire Lord Observes the Manion they must spend between 1 and 3 Puissance and then privately notify Richardo von Nestor of their Observing the Manion action. When Richardo von Nestor is notified of a Vampire Lord’s Observing the Mansion Action, he must respond based on how much Puissance the Vampire Lord spent carrying that Action out; if 1 Puissance was spent he should provide a 12hour period in which Witching Hour occurs; if 2 Puissance was spent he should provide an 6 hour period in which Witching Hour occurs; if 3 Puissance was spent he should give the exact time of Witching Hour.

There is a variable called the Organ, which may be Playing or Not Playing, and which defaults to Not Playing. While the Organ is Playing, no Power Actions may be performed. If the current time is after Witching Hour, Richardo von Nestor may Start the Music. Doing so is an atomic action with the following steps
* Revert all Power Actions which were taken after the current Witching Hour, starting with the most recently performed Power Action and working backwards. If for whatever reason Richardo cannot revert a Power Action, they may skip reverting that action and continue reverting those which he can revert. He should then make public note of all Power Actions which could not be reverted and is encouraged not to perform the Enter the Crypt action until Vampire Lords have had opportunity to discuss how to handle the actions which could not be reverted.
* Set the Organ to be Playing

When Richardo von Nestor Winds the Clock, they take the current time, add 24 hours, roll a DICE24 and add the resulting number in hours, and that becomes the new Sunset. They then secretly roll another DICE24 and add that resulting number in hours to Sunset, and that becomes the new Witching Hour. Whenever the Crypt Settles, Richardo von Nestor sets the Organ to Not Playing and Winds the Clock.

As a Power Action with a cost of 0, a Vampire Lord may Observe the Mansion. When a Vampire Lord Observes the Mansion they must spend between 1 and 3 Puissance and then privately notify Richardo von Nestor of their Observing the Manion action. When Richardo von Nestor is notified of a Vampire Lord’s Observing the Mansion Action, he must respond based on how much Puissance the Vampire Lord spent carrying that Action out; if 1 Puissance was spent he should provide a 12 hour period in which Witching Hour occurs; if 2 Puissance was spent he should provide an 6 hour period in which Witching Hour occurs; if 3 Puissance was spent he should give the exact time of Witching Hour.

Set Sunset to the current date and time.

In the rule Richardo’s Journey, change

Witching Hour is a publicly tracked date and time. When Richardo von Nestor or a Vampire Lord Winds the Clock, they take the current time, add 24 hours, roll a DICE24 and add the resulting number in hours, and that becomes the new Witching Hour. Whenever the Crypt Settles, Richardo von Nestor Winds the Clock. If the current time is after Witching Hour, the Organ is Playing. Otherwise the Organ is not Playing. While the Organ is Playing, no Power Actions may be performed.

Proposal: Victory fix

Passes 5-0. Enacted by Brendan.

Adminned at 26 Jul 2021 16:12:41 UTC

In “Ritual Chambers”, change

If Richardo collapses a room with the “Richardo encounters Dracula’s Sepulchre” effect while holding a Silver-Tipped Stake then Dracula is Dusted.

to

If Richardo moves to a room with the “Richardo encounters Dracula’s Sepulchre” effect while holding a Silver-Tipped Stake then Dracula is Dusted.

“collapses” effects happen when the Crypt Settles, so the current wording of the rule checks to see if Richardo has a Silver-Tipped Stake at that point in time.

Unfortunately, Richardo has already given up all his items by then.

This changes the rule to work how it notionally should work: Richardo needs to be holding the Stake at the time he enters the room, not when the room finally Collapses.

Proposal: return 4; [Appendix]

Passes 6-0. Enacted by Brendan.

Adminned at 26 Jul 2021 16:11:07 UTC

In “Random Generators” after “This value must be determined by an appropriate roll in the Dice Roller, unless otherwise specified” add ” and which value the roll result corresponds to must be reasonably inferable from the nature of the roll and any comments supplied by the Vampire Lord making the roll before or while making the roll”

Right now there is a bit of a loophole where to say, pick a room to blood frenzy, someone can roll a DICE40 get a 16 and then once they’ve seen the result go “I was going alphabetically, so that is the Crypt Entrance” or “I was going by the order on the wiki, so that is the Cliff Edge”. I think rolling the DICE40 is fine, but we should make it so that its clear prior to the roll how you’re going to interpret the roll. (to be clear, I don’t think you legally can do that under the current rules, its just something that is impossible to enforce. and this helps ensure people are being honest about their rolls)

Crypt map

I’ll been mucking about with it today, with help from Kevan, as you might see.

* A general room border
* Accents in the directions of blockages, and
* Icons for common features, like threats, denizens, chests and bounce effects

The net effect looks very busy to me, so I wanted to court opinions on which if any of these features are useful and worth keeping, and which I should roll back. Thanks!

Rewrite the core rule Enacting and Failing as follows:

Votable matters have a status, which can either be Pending, Enacted, Failed, or Illegal. When a votable matter is first put forward is considered Pending (which is tracked as having no status in the current blog software), and it remains Pending until it is Resolved.

A votable matter is resolved by an admin setting its status through use of the “status” field in the blog post editing form. When an admin resolves a votable matter they should mark their name, and are highly encouraged to report the final tally of Votes (or the fact that it was self-killed or vetoed). Comments cannot be made on resolved Votable Matters.

A votable matter may not be resolved except as directed by the ruleset, and the status of a resolved votable matter, once resolved, is determined by the votes cast upon it, as assessed by the rules that govern the specific kind of votable matter (as well as any other considerations regarding the legality of the votable matter, such as the stipulations put forward in the Appendix rule Official Posts). When a Failed proposal has been Vetoed it may optionally have the Vetoed status upon resolution, which is considered to be the same as Failed for the purposes of all other rules.

This rule cannot be overruled by any other rule in its application to Calls for Judgement or Declarations of Victory.

In the core rule Resolution of Proposals, remove “(by updating the Ruleset and/or Gamestate to include the specified effects of that Proposal, and then setting that Proposal’s status to Enacted)”, and, at the end of that rule, add

When a Proposal is Enacted, its stated effects are immediately applied in full; the Admin Enacting it shall update the Gamestate and Ruleset, and correct any gamestate-tracking entities, as specified in the Proposal.

In the Appendix, in the rule Other, change the keyword definition for Resolve/Resolution to read as follows:

If used in a context of a Votable Matter, the word “Resolve” means to perform the act, as an Admin, of enacting, failing, or marking illegal a Votable Matter. The world “Resolution” means then the act of doing so. If used in any other context, the meaning of both “Resolve” and “Resolution” is the standard English meaning of these words. The resolution of a votable matter is tracked by reference to its status in the blog post edit form. If otherwise legally applied, the application of any status through the blog post editing form is sufficient to consider that votable matter to have been correctly resolved, but a resolved votable matter should have the correct status wherever possible; if any admin believes that a resolved votable matter has an incorrect status then they may correct it.

At the moment, whether a proposal (or CfJ, or DoV) has passed or not is a tracked variable. This isn’t a problem-problem - only dynastic variables can be orphan - but it is a sort-of problem that resolution status isn’t defined anywhere. In the current ruleset: what actually makes a proposal be resolved? What does an admin have to do in order to fail a proposal? Is there an audit trail?

This harmonises everything and also has a blanket uphold for everything that happened prior to this dynasty, just in case.

Proposal: Food for the Soulless

Timed out and failed, 2-3. Josh

Adminned at 26 Jul 2021 07:41:33 UTC

In “Richardo’s Journey”, change

When the Crypt Awakens, each Vampire Lord who is not Bloodthirsty gains 1 Puissance.

to

When the Crypt Awakens, each Vampire Lord who is not Bloodthirsty gains 3 Puissance.

Based on a suggestion by Josh.

The two main Puissance sources that have been giving us all power for most of the dynasty (Library of Souls and Shattered Staircase) have either been broken by Blood Frenzies, or are about to become Purified, meaning that there aren’t many sources of Puissance left other than Industrious Denizens. In order to avoid forcing people to participate in that subgame, it makes sense to increase the basic rations a bit.

Call for Judgment: It isn’t just exits that get blocked

Fewer than a quorum not voting against. Failed 1-5 by Kevan.

Adminned at 24 Jul 2021 16:22:08 UTC

Fail the proposals “🎉BLOOD FRENZY🎉”, “Daywalkers”, “All Charged Up”, and “All In”.

For “Simply Slithering” and each newer proposal, if an admin has attempted to enact or fail it, uphold that enactment/failure if it was illegal purely due to the proposal not being the oldest pending proposal at the time it was enacted/failed (and was otherwise legal).

In the rule “Effects”, add a full stop to the end of the definitions of “The north exit is blocked”, “The east exit is blocked”, “The west exit is blocked”, and “The south exit is blocked” effects.

So, the party-popper blood frenzy proposal was never legally Enacted or Failed, and thus is still Pending. (In order to fail a proposal, you have to mark it as failed, something which Brendan didn’t do while attempting to fail it, so the “fail a proposal” admin action was never properly completed.)

This has a knock-on effect for the rest of the proposal queue, meaning that future proposals can’t be enacted or failed either until we unblock the queue somehow. So here’s a CFJ to unblock it.

(BlogNomic really needs some sort of rule that allows innocent mistakes in queue order to not hold up the game. Something like “admins can enact proposals out of order if no previous proposal has its status in the ExpressionEngine software as Pending, but doing so knowingly is a Fair Play violation”.)

I included a random typo fix just to make sure that this CFJ doesn’t fall afoul of “It specifies neither changes to the Gamestate or Ruleset nor corrections to any gamestate-tracking entities.” – it’s unclear to me whether changes to proposal status are enough to avoid that clause, so the typo fix is an additional side effect to make it clear that the CFJ isn’t intended to be immediately failable.

Proposal: Blood in the Cauldron

At 1-5, fewer than a quorum not voting against. Failed by Brendan.

Add the following to the first paragraph of “Status”

Bloodthirsty Vampire Lords may perform the Distilling Mysterious Action despite the restriction on which Mysterious Actions Bloodthirsty Vampire Lord can perform, provided they have enough Puissance to pay the cost, but if doing so would set their Puissance to a value higher than 1, their Puissance instead set to 1

Story Post: Koda’s Third Expedition

The Witch Koda, confident, snuck past the sleeping form of rector of the Cathedral, Father Bartlebas, noting with her third sight as she did so the satanic glyphs he had smeared upon his own corpulent flesh in whatever ritual he had used to bind himself to the demon below. Making her way into the Cathedral’s basement, she found a chest marked with the crest of the von Nestor family; muttering the incantation that Richardo had taught her, she flipped it open and found a silver-tipped stake. “That’ll come in handy,” she muttered, before heading down to the crypt entrance.

The crypt felt much larger to her, filling her with energy and purpose.

From the Crypt Entrance, she moved west, to the Tenuous Bridge. She watched her footing but failed to notice a batch of moss on one of the slats, which caused her to slip and bash her knee - incurring a Light Injury. Falling did cause her to notice an average chest on a ledge just below the bridge, however; she used a small spell to levitate it up to her and opened it, finding a secret passage map. She immediately used it, revealing a point where - if one was confident - one could dive off the Tenuous Bridge and be caught by the river Zahn, and carried to another part of the crypt.  She shrugged, tied off her robes, and dived.

The cold water carried her underground before depositing her through a sluice into the White Hallways. The water from the sluice ran off into a gutter, the only feature in this otherwise gleaming white walkway, which was lit from the north by a blinding source of white light. She investigated but that north exit was blocked; feeling a strong sense that the west exit had nothing to reveal, she instead headed east.

She found herself once again back in the Phlegm Chamber, and this time she took a moment to really examine the space. She spent a while making tracings of the demonic language carved into the bark, and took a small sample of the fluid leaking from the tree stump. However, when she tried to remove the speak from the stump - pulling against it with all of her might - a thick sliver of the shaft splintered away, slicing painfully into her hand and causing a light injury - and a splatter of blood to spray from her warm body onto the lifeless trunk, where it was immediately absorbed into the wood. Feeling an immense sense of dread, she backed away from the stump, then turned and fled from the room.

Her run took her back through the White Hallways, down a long Straight Hallway, and back into the Cobwebbed Cellar, where in her hurry she failed to notice an average chest. Finally pausing in the Gravity Room , she took a deep breath to steady herself as gravity eddied around her. Grabbing at a fine chest as it phased through she space, she opened it to find a bottle of find brandy - dutch courage that she immediate downed, becoming drunk in the process - and a rusty crossbow. She then, in a state of drunken despair, played in the gravity well for a while before being spat out into the Blood Pit.

She clambered her way up through the pit, barely noticing the viscera pouring from the walls - which seemed to have grown in volume and intensity - making her way through to the Entrance Vestibule, where she found another average chest. Opening it, she found a holy tincture - “Yesh, drink everythin’!” she muttered - downing it to regain a little energy, but no sobriety.

Then she staggered around for a while - to the Cliff Edge, where she tripped on a stalagmite and incurred a light injury, through to the Chicken Coop via the Marble Tunnel and the Intestinal Passage, bouncing on the magic effect, and then back the way she came to the Entrance Vestibule, where she sat on the floor and giggled for a minute - “Weeee! Round in circles!” This time when she opened the chest she found a Secret Passage Map. She looked at it very seriously for a long second, then fell over sideways and had a snooze for fifteen minutes. It didn’t help; when she woke up she was still drunk, but she was able to focus for long enough to find the one statue whose arm could be pulled to reveal a secret pathway.

The passage twists and turns before spitting her out into a wide courtyard, painted in lilac tones and cloudscape scenes, and decorated with a lot of soft furnishings, cushions, throw pillows, hammocks and one gigantic sarcophagus. “I already did you”, she mutters, seeing the familiar legend - “Beneath here lie the immortal sins of the Vampire Lord Jumble” - carved into its heavy lid. She blasted the lid off with her spell again, and the Vampire Lord’s eyes snapped open; for a moment they caught each others’ gaze, before she slammed her silver-tipped stake down and into his chest. She stumbled back (accidentally discharging her crossbow on a stray Nightmare), then turned and vomited as Jumble’s body violently disassembled behind her. Looking ruefully at her own throw-up, she headed for the east exit.

She finds herself… in a strange room? Wait - is she still drunk, or is she left-handed now? She tries to move to the right but instead finds herself moving to the left. This must be some kind of… Moor Derorrim? In the corner there is another familiar sight - the still-wet, moss-covered tomb with “ANCIENT…. BLOOD… ALL… NIGHT… AIS523” carved over the door. “Fussk this,” she hisses, tossing a fireball - awkwardly, missing at first - at the tomb before backing out through the door. A Noitcelfer watched her before being crushed by some flaming masonry.

She hurried through the rapidly-disassembling Slumber Yard and out the other side, to the West.

The dread that had gripped her in the Phlegm Room once again reached out to her as she entered the Blood Chamber. The room was malevolently, oppressively dark, lit only by the menacing red glow of burning runes carved into the stone surface of an obelisk in the centre of the room. Immediately Koda found herself set upon by termites and a wandering Dreamcatcher - she blasted at them with uncoordinated electric flame in a panic and they evaporated, but the room itself twisted and turned around her, and she found herself next to the menhir, drawn towards it, and found herself reaching into her belt and drawing out a knife, and opening the wound on her hand, and squeezing more blood onto its surface - it was so hungry, the blood disappeared immediately into the stone, and the pain of the light injury pulsed in her blood, and then she was out, propelled through the north door…

What had she done?

She wandered through the landscape outside the crypt - through a Bloodsoaked Plain, a Shallow Swamp, and a Marble Plaza - before sobering up enough to realise that she had to get back to the von Nestor manor, and quickly, to discuss their next move.

Proposal: Pressing Pause

Passes 7-0. Enacted by Brendan.

Adminned at 25 Jul 2021 14:20:48 UTC

Remove “and there are no pending calls for judgement which have the tag “[Pressing]”” from the rule “Richardo’s Journey”, if it’s there.

Then replace “If the Organ is Playing, Richardo von Nestor may Enter the Crypt” with:-

If the Organ is Playing and there are no pending calls for judgement which have the tag “[Pressing]”, Richardo von Nestor may Enter the Crypt

Doesn’t seem necessary to resume power actions while an urgent problem is being discussed - as it stands, anyone who wants to turn the Organ off and take some actions can do so by raising a weak Pressing CfJ first.

All that Pressing needs to do is tell Josh not to start the next Crypt run until the CfJ is over.

Proposal: State of Game

Self-killed. Josh

Adminned at 25 Jul 2021 09:37:53 UTC

In the list of keywords in the appendix, in rule 4.1.3, change the text of the entry for Gamestate to read as follows:

Any information which the Ruleset regulates the alteration of. All wiki pages that the Ruleset mentions by name or links to, and any images or Templates contained within those Wiki Pages are assumed to be Gamestate; the contents of such pages may otherwise be a mixture of gamestate and non-gamestate.

There are a few pages that, under the current wording, are surprisingly not gamestate (Favours being the big example, although the never-used Gamestate Modifications page being not gamestate also stands out for ludicrousness). This expansion does have some weird side effects - the Mentorship page becoming gamestate takes some swallowing - but letting these pages carry non-gamestate information fixes a lot of the anxiety, although the question of whether gamestate vs non-gamestate is adequately defined does hover over all this.

Proposal: Medium Rare

In “Dark Favours”, after “All Favours are always ripe in this dynasty.”, add:-

Favours may also have a Ripeness of “Raw”: a Raw Favour is also considered to be a Ripe Favour, and when a Favour is gained during this dynasty it is gained Raw.

Replace “If the game is in Interregnum, any Vampire Lord may remove any duplicated Favours (i.e. repeated Favours with the same holder and lender) past the first from all Vampire Lords. They must then make all remaining Favours unripe.” with:-

If the game is in Interregnum, any Vampire Lord may remove any duplicated Favours (i.e. repeated Favours with the same holder and lender) past the first from all Vampire Lords, removing Raw Favours before non-Raw ones. They must then make all remaining Raw Favours unripe.

Make the following Ripe Favours Raw, if they exist:

  • One held by Lemonfanta and loaned by Jumble
  • One held by Jumble and loaned by Clucky
  • One held by Brendan and loaned by Lemonfanta
  • All those gained while this proposal was pending

The Dark Favours rule says that Favours traded during The Eighth Dynasty of Clucky now persist into the one beyond - but those Favours were agreed on the understanding that they could be only cashed in during this current dynasty. This changes the expiration so that Clucky-era Favours will disappear at the end of Josh’s dynasty, and only Josh-era ones will be carried forward.

Proposal: I’m Richardo

Enacted 5-0. Josh

Adminned at 24 Jul 2021 18:36:06 UTC

In “The Crypt of Dracula”, change

Room names may not contain the word “Dracula”.

to

Room names may not contain the word “Dracula”, nor the word “Richardo”.

In “Victory”, change

No Vampire Lord may have the name Dracula.

to

No Vampire Lord may have the name Dracula, nor the name Richardo.

in “Crypt Denizens”, change

(which cannot be nor contain “Dracula”)

to

(which cannot be nor contain “Dracula” nor “Richardo”)

“Richardo von Nestor” is occasionally abbreviated to just “Richardo” in the rules. If someone created another entity named Richardo, these references would become ambiguous, possibly breaking parts of the ruleset.

I can’t figure out a useful way to scam this, so I’m closing the loophole just in case someone else can.

Note that our emperor Josh is not prohibited from being named as Richardo by this: Dynastic Distance prevents him being in the set of Vampire Lords who are banned from being Richardo.

Proposal: It’s not a good scam if I can’t use it

Add to the rule “Dark Favours” the following:

If Spending a Favour would directly affect any Glyphs or Denizens, then the act of Spending that Favour is also a Power Action with a cost of 0.

This won’t matter as much if we discard the current timer mechanism for PAs. But right now the ability to write oneself onto a Glyph, or swipe a Denizen, doesn’t affect the clock, which is to say the ability to map-snipe is unfairly reserved for players with lots of Favours.

Call for Judgment: SPM Rebound [Pressing]

Set the list of predetermined items that are assigned to the average treasure chest in the room “Library of Souls” to be [Secret Passage Map]. Deduct 2 from the Puissance of the Vampire Lord Chiiika. Consider the most recent Power Action to have been performed at 17:53 UTC on 22 July 2021.

Jumble, spurred by Clucky, reverted Chiiika’s Power Action at https://wiki.blognomic.com/index.php?title=Zahndorf_Crypt&oldid=15996 on the grounds that the change did not exactly follow the letter of “by appending the names of the items to be contained in that chest to its entry in the room’s effects in square brackets”—since the names of the items were appended slightly later in the entry. I think that’s a pretty fussy point which could have just been corrected if Chiiika were online more frequently and the reversion didn’t offer Jumble and Clucky a tactical advantage.

Proposal: Enough Stalling

In “Richardo’s Journey” replace everything before “If the Organ is Playing, Richardo von Nestor may Enter the Crypt, which is an atomic action with the following steps:” with

Witching Hour is a publicly tacked date and time.

As a Daily Action, Richardo von Nestor may Test his Resolve. When Richardo von Nestor Tests his Resolve, he publicly rolls DICE5+x, where x is the number of full 24 hour periods that have elapsed since the last time he Entered the Crypt. If the result is equal to or higher than 5 then the Organ is Playing, and the next time the Crypt Awakens he may add 3 to his Energy.

Add the following to the beginning of the same rule:

The Organ is publicly tracked and may be either Playing or Not Playing. Unless a rule has specifically made the Organ be Playing, it is Not Playing. Whenever the Crypt Settles, set the Organ to Not Playing.

Remove the text “Otherwise the Organ is not playing” from the same rule.

Add a new subrule to the rule Undead Life, called The Nosturi:

At any time, a Vampire Lord with an Allegiance of none may set their Allegiance to Nosturi. A Vampire Lord with an Allegiance of Nosturi may not change their Allegiance to any other value. Vampire Lords whose Allegiance is Nosturi may be referred to as ‘being Nosturi’, or may simply be referred to as being traitors.

No Vampire Lord may have the name Nosturi.

Nosturi may not become Dust; when they have zero Puissance they remain Revenant. Nosturi may not have a Sepulchre; if ever a Nosturi has a Sepulchre then any Vampire Lord may set their Sepulchre to blank. Nosturi may not gain Influence or own Blood Mana Crystals; if ever a Nosturi has a value greater than zero for either then any Vampire Lord may set those values to zero.

Add the following to the end of the rule Denizen Encounters:

As a Power Action with a cost of 1, a Nosturi may have a Denizen whose Sycophancy is themselves encounter another Denizen in the same location as if they were Richardo von Nestor. If they do, their Denizen (the attacker) treats their Cunning as if it were Richardo’s remaining Energy, and if the roll is equal or lower than the target then the attacker is slain.

Add the following to the list of Traits in the rule Denizen Characteristics:

Treacherous: If this Denizen’s Sycophancy is a Nosturi then, as a Power Action with a cost of 3, that Nosturi may collapse any Sepulchre in the same location as this Denizen (+2)

If any exist, a random Crypt Denizen whose Sycophancy is a Vampire Lord with a sigil in this room changes its location to this room; if the selected Denizen is Quick, Richardo encounters it now. (+2)

Add the following Denizen Trait to the list in the rule “Denizen Characteristics”, maintaining alphabetical order:

* Slithering: All Ordinary Rooms count as orthogonally adjacent for the purposes of Slithering Denizens that are Roaming or chosen as a part of the Moving Denizens Power Action. (+1)

Proposal: A cleaner pool

Passes 6-0. Enacted by Brendan.

Adminned at 22 Jul 2021 17:33:28 UTC

If “Dirty Pool” failed, make the same changes to the ruleset that it would have made if it had been enacted.

Then amend the text of “Room Pools” to the following:

A Room Pool is a set of rooms, created via the use of the following steps, in the order listed (when Richardo “makes a Room Pool” he follows these steps to create a Room Pool):

  • Start with an empty pool of no Rooms.
  • If Richardo used a Secret Passage Map in his most recent Move, add all Lit Rooms other than Richardo’s current location to the Room Pool, and skip the remaining steps.
  • If a “Richardo von Nestor’s next Move in this Enter the Crypt action must have his immediate previous location as its destination. ” effect was applied during Richardo’s previous move, and Richardo’s current and previous locations are orthogonally adjacent, add only Richardo’s previous location to the Room Pool and skip the remaining steps.
  • Add all lit rooms orthogonally adjacent to Richardo’s current location to the Room Pool.
  • Now process the following list of steps, except that if applying any of these steps would cause the Room Pool to become empty, that step is skipped rather than applying it:
    • Remove each room from the Room Pool that is orthogonally adjacent to Richardo’s current location in the direction of an exit that is blocked from Richardo’s current location.
    • Remove each room from the Room Pool that is Daunting, unless Richardo is Drunk.
    • Remove Richardo’s immediately previous location from the Room Pool, if it is there.
    • Remove each room from the Room Pool that is Familiar, unless Richardo is Amnesiac.

“Dirty Pool” is a nice rewrite for comprehensibility reasons, but unfortunately it’s broken and too late to edit.

This fixes it to actually work (the most important fix is for the “Start with an empty pool of no Rooms” step to not cause the entire Room Pool creation to fail because it empties the Room Pool, but there are a few other fixes, such as making blocked rooms work and preventing Richardo finding a secret passage to his own current location).

Replace the sentence “A Vampire Lord cannot perform this action on more than one occasion between each Enter the Crypt action, except that performing multiple instances of this action in a single wiki update counts as a single performance of the action for the purpose of this sentence.” in the rule “Crypt Denizens” with:

A Vampire Lord cannot perform this action on more than one occasion between each Enter the Crypt action.

This is supposed to just be a one-fell-swoop trick for players with lots of Puissance, right? If we’re going to limit the action, let’s limit the action.

In the rule Richardo’s Journey, change

*Create a list of Lit rooms orthogonally adjacent to Richardo’s current location (or a list of all Lit Rooms, if Richardo has just used a Secret Passage Map). Remove the following rooms from the list, in this order, except that a removal is skipped if it would cause the list to become empty, and/or if an Effect forces Richardo to move to a room that would be removed:
**Orthogonally adjacent rooms in the direction of an exit from Richardo’s current room that is blocked;
**Rooms with a “This room is Daunting” effect;
**Richardo’s previous location;
**Familiar Rooms.
*Secretly randomly select a room from the created list (unless a Treasure or Effect specifies some other way to select from the list, in which case follow its directions instead). Richardo enters that room: it becomes Richardo’s new current location.

to

Make a Room Pool and randomly chose a destination from that pool; move Richardo to that destination.

Add a new subrule to the rule Richardo’s Journey, called Room Pools:

When Richardo is required to make a Room Pool, he must follow the following steps; if a step would require the Room Pool to become empty then skip it and all subsequent steps:

* Make a new Room Pool that contains no Rooms.
* If Richardo used a secret passage map in his most recent Move, add all lit rooms to the Room Pool and skip all subsequent steps.
* If Richardo’s current Location has the “must have his immediate previous location as its destination” effect, and Richardo’s most recent previous location is orthogonally adjacent to Richardo’s current location, then add Richardo’s immediate previous location to the Room Pool and skip all subsequent previous steps.
* Add all lit rooms orthogonally adjacent to Richardo’s current location to the Room Pool.
* Remove any Rooms in the Room Pool that are blocked.
* If Richardo is holding a compass and the room in the compass’ specified direction is in the Room Pool, remove all other rooms from the Room Pool and skip all subsequent steps.
* Remove any Rooms in the Room Pool that are Daunting, unless Richardo is Drunk.
* Remove the Room in the Room Pool that was Richardo’s most recent Location, prior to his current Location, if it is in the Room Pool.
* Remove any Rooms in the Room Pool that are Familiar, unless Richardo is Amnesiac.

If Proposal: Pole Revision is enacted, remove the line “* If Richardo is holding a compass and the room in the compass’ specified direction is in the Room Pool, remove all other rooms from the Room Pool and skip all subsequent steps.” from the ruleset.

More words, but ironing out some ambiguities and inconsistencies. (For example, at the moment, the map requires me to “randomly select from any Lit room to be his next destination”, but the Move action requires that I start with a list of all rooms and then remove blocked, Daunting, previous location and familiar rooms; these are very different instructions!)

Add the following to the list of Power Actions

Disrupting is a Power Action with a cost of 2 that each Vampire Lord may perform no more than once between each Enter the Crypt action. When a Vampire Lord carries out an Enchantment they may pick a room and spend the Shadow cost of an Effect in Puissance in that room to temporarily disable that effect. (Effects which have a negative Shadow cost may not be disabled in this way.). An effect which is crossed out by a strike through (for example,

Richardo von Nestor is Lightly Wounded

) is a disabled effect. It is still an effect in the room, but it has no effect during Richardo’s next crypt entrance. Disabled effects cease to be disabled whenever the Crypt Settles.

Story Post: Richardo’s Fifteenth Expedition

After a few days discussing strategies with Koda, Richardo decided that it was once again time for him to face the Crypt. He took up the von Nestor whip and shield and ventured through the night towards the Cathedral, from whence the eerie sounds of the organ could be heard drifting over the rooftops.

Disdaining Koda’s sewer ingress, Richardo opted for what he knew: the mosaic hall of the grand Cathedral entrance. Once inside he found that the north exit had been tightly sealed, so, despite feeling like he knew what he would be getting, he moved towards the south and the Entrance Vestibule.

Indeed, the Entrance Vestibule was unchanged. Richardo ignored the average chest and made his way east.

The Blood Pit felt very unfamiliar to Richardo. He could discern the remains of the Infinite Stairway, here, a geometric impossibility that had caused him not a few injuries. He noted that it was now a bubbling cauldron of gore, and yet somehow he still felt that it was an improvement. He noticed a Dimensional Jellyfish phasing in and out of the room; Koda had told him about it so he took no chances and sunk the flanged head of the von Nestor whip into its soft, transluscent dome, killing it instantly. He continued east.

The Prison Cells were another new addition that Koda had told him about but which he hadn’t seen for himself. He paced cautiously through the room, alert for more monsters, but not - alas - alert to the possibility of one of the cell doors slamming itself closed on his arm, eliciting a howl of pain and a Grievous Injury. The massive glyph of the Vampire Lord Kevan pulsed greedily on the wall, mocking von Nestor with its obviousness. The east exit was blocked so Richardo had no choice but to return the way he came,

He passed back through the Blood Pit, this time to the south.

He sighed with exhaustion at the threshold to the Gravity Room; was he up for this? Then an eddy of gravitational malarky whipped at him, pulling him into the chaotic maelstrom. Somehow he pulled himself towards the fine chest; opening it, he found a Secret Passage Map and a Silver-Tipped Stake. Quickly referring to the map, he ducked down into the gravitational pathway and…

...found himself spat out in the Shattered Stairway, right at the feet of the vast, ghastly visage of the Stair Muncher. Both he and Koda had witnessed shadows of this beast flitting about, but up close it was too hideous to behold, its fangs each as wide as a human arm and impacted by all of the stairs it had munched. Richardo raised his shield weakly but the Muncher punched straight through it with one mighty swing, causing nine Light Injuries to accrue to Richardo and nine Influence to accrue to the dark lord of the Stair Muncher, who at this point in time happened to be the Vampire Lord Brendan. Battered and bruised, Richardo clutched at the shield and muttered the incantation that would take him out of the crypt and back towards his home…

He paused to stash the Silver-Tipped Stake in the Cathedral on his way out.

Delete from the list of Average treasures in the rule “Treasures” each item that includes the word “Compass” in its text. Delete the paragraph “If two or more Compasses attempt to force Richardo in two or more different possible directions in a single selection of a room to move to, then none of those Compass effects are applied when making that selection” from the rule “Treasures” as well.

Remove each existing Northbound Compass, Southbound Compass, Eastbound Compass, and Westbound Compass that is currently in the contents of a treasure chest. Increase by 1 the Puissance of the Vampire Lords ais523 and Chiiika.

Compasses cause Josh headaches and don’t work right now anyway. I hope I’m refunding the right people here, but let me know if I’m wrong.

Add the following to the rule Treasures, immediately before “The list of available Treasures are as follows”:

Whenever an item effect says that Richardo “immediately uses” that Item, he is considered to use it the next time a Room is Pacified.

Add the following to the list of average treasures in the rule Treasures:

Amnesiac Watch: Richardo immediately uses this to become Amnesiac; while Amnesiac, Richardo disregards the requirement to remove Familiar rooms from the list of rooms selected from in the Move step of the Enter the Crypt action.
Silver Needle: While holding this item, Richardo is Lightly Wounded every time a room is Pacified. While holding this item, if Richardo would take Light Wounds as as result of a Denizen Encounter, he does not.

Add the following to the list of fine treasures in the rule Treasures:

Dutch Courage: Richardo immediately uses this to become Drunk; while Drunk, Richardo disregards the requirement to remove Daunting rooms from the list of rooms selected from in the Move step of the Enter the Crypt action, and any Grievous Would inflicted upon Richardo are instead Light Injuries.
Gold Needle: While holding this item, if Richardo would take Light Wounds as as result of a Denizen Encounter, he does not.

Add the following to the list in the rule Denizen Characteristics:

Concussive: If Richardo takes a Light Wound as a result of an encounter with this Denizen, he loses any statuses (such as Agile, Perceptive, Drunk, Amnesiac, but not Enriched) that he might have, (+2)

Okay, trying this without the kingmaker element. But it really doesn’t make sense that if both Player X and Dracula are dust, Player X wins.

Proposal: Cleaning up the remaining cases of untracked Purity

Enacted 6-0. Josh

Adminned at 19 Jul 2021 08:33:21 UTC

To the end of the first paragraph of “Purification”, append

Richardo’s starting location can never be Purified; if a room ever becomes Richardo’s starting location, it ceases to be Purified.

and in the same rule, change

Ritual Chambers may never become Purified.

to

Ritual Chambers can never be Purified.

and

If a Purified room is ever the location of a Vampire Lord’s Sepulchre, any Vampire Lord or Richardo von Nestor may set that Vampire Lord’s Sepulchre to be empty.

to

Purified rooms can never be the location of a Vampire Lord’s Sepulchre; if a room becomes Purified while a Vampire Lord’s Sepulchre, that Vampire Lord is set to have no Sepulchre.

If “Absence of Impurity” was enacted, also change

The Vampire Lord carrying out this action chooses any Lit Room with no effects that is not a Ritual Chamber or a Sepulchre.

to

The Vampire Lord carrying out this action chooses any Lit Room with no effects that is not a Ritual Chamber, a Sepulchre, or Richardo’s starting location.

in the text it added to the Ruleset.

“United Colors” causes purification status to unambiguously become untracked for Sepulchresand Richardo’s starting location (there isn’t a way you can calculate it from tracked variables because those rooms have a background colour override, and therefore their Purification status wouldn’t show up in the background colour) – it also causes it to ambiguously become untracked for Ritual Chambers (which can never “become” Purified, but that doesn’t completely discount the possibility that they actually *are* Purified – a common scam in Nomics is to create things in a state that they could never legally get themselves into after creation). Additionally, there are circumstances in which at least Richardo’s starting location genuinely *could* be a Purified room, so we can’t rely on “there’s no way this room could have become Purified, therefore it’s unPurified”.

This proposal makes it so that rooms with a background colour override can never be Purified (the starting location is automatically unPurified, as are Ritual Chambers, and the removal of Sepulchres in Purified rooms is set to happen immediately rather than waiting for someone to do it manually, so that there can never be a period of time in which a room is Purified and a Sepulchre simultaneously). It also prevents them being Cleansed, to avoid the weirdness that would happen if you could Cleanse a room without Purifying it as a consequence.

This is necessary to avoid the introduction/reintroduction of an untracked variable if “United Colors” passes, and arguably also in the current gamestate if “Purity, untracked” fails. It still makes sense as a standalone proposal even if “United Colors” fails, but in that case, it’s just a pure (if very minor) gameplay change rather than something that’s necessary to avoid breakage.

Remove the text “Dark rooms have a background colour of #444444 and have no text inside them, while Lit rooms have a background colour of #888888 (or #CCCC00, if they are a Sepulchre, or #CC6666 if they are Daunting but not a Sepulchre, or #8888CC if they are Familiar but not Daunting or containing a Sepulchre) and contain a room name.” from the rule Crypt of Dracula.

In the rule Ritual Chambers, replace the text “Ritual Chambers have a text colour of #FFFFFF and are always Lit. The Ritual Chamber located at A1 is called the Yellow Bile Chamber and has a background colour of #585B1F. The Ritual Chamber located at A8 is called the Black Bile Chamber and has a background colour of #1B2E4F. The Ritual Chamber located at A1 is called the Yellow Bile Chamber; the Ritual Chamber located at A8 is called the Black Bile Chamber; the Ritual Chamber located at H1 is called the Blood Chamber; and the Ritual Chamber located at H8 is called the Phlegm Chamber.”

Remove the any of the following chunks of text that appear in the rule Purification: “have a background color of”; “#2FF3E0”; “#99F”; “The purification status of each room is tracked by setting the background colour of Purified rooms (and only Purified rooms) on the Zahndorf Crypt map to”;

Add a new subrule to the rule Crypt of Dracula, called Map Key:

Rooms may have a status. The status of a room may be derived from an effect in that room, its colour on the map, or both. A Room may be considered to have any status implied by an effect (e.g. a room can be said to “have a Glyph”, “be blocked from the north”, “be Daunting”), although the text of the Effect is sovereign for determining such properties; as well as any status that is directly conferred by a rule (eg “be Lit”, “be a Ritual Chamber”).

A room’s colour (and text colour, where listed) on the map is determined by the highest entry on this list for which the room has the prescribed status:

* Is a Ritual Chamber: Text colour #FFFFFF, and one of the following:
** The Yellow Bile Chamber has a background colour of #585B1F
** The Black Bile Chamber has a background colour of #1B2E4F
** The Blood Chamber has a background colour of #591F2E.
** The Phlegm Chamber has a background colour of #2C541D
* Is Richardo’s current Starting Location: Background colour of #859F83
* Contains a Sepulchre: Background colour of #CCCC00
* Is Purified: Background colour of #2FF3E0
* Is Daunting: Background colour of #CC6666
* Is Familiar: Background colour of #8888CC
* Is Lit: Background colour of #888
* Is Dark: Background colour of #444

The background colour of a room on the map can be specified by other rules. If it is not, it should be the colour associated with the first description in the following list that applies to the room: #444444 if Dark; #CCCC00 if a Sepulchre; #CC6666 if Daunting; #8888CC if Familiar; #888888 if Lit. Lit Rooms also have their name specified on the map.

Uphold the Offering of a Prayer to Penelopa that was performed at 21:35, 16 July 2021. Set the room named Broken Stage to be Purified. Set all other rooms to not be Purified (setting their background colour as appropriate for the type of room).

So it turns out that we have an untracked variable that makes Entering the Crypt impossible (because whether a room is Purified or not is an orphan variable, and that orphan variable affects Richardo’s Energy level changes).

This change gives it a tracking mechanism (via the background colour on the map; this makes Ritual Chambers unPurifiable so that there isn’t a contradiction of background colours), causing it to no longer be orphaned. The CFJ is worded to work regardless of whether “Wow, look, nothing!” is pending, enacted or failed.

It’s also not 100% obvious that you can perform an action that *changes* an orphan variable (in situations where the variable’s status otherwise doesn’t matter). This upholds the one Purification attempt we’ve had so far. (No further Purification is legal until this CFJ passes because no rooms have appropriate effects, so there’s no need to try to react to further Purifications.)

Story Post: Koda’s Second Expedition

After a pleasant night at the von Nestor mansion, followed by a hearty breakfast, the Witch Koda decided to have another look at the Crypt, this time focusing on the new entrance from her vision.

Cantrips around the entry sewer fed the Vampire Lords with Influence and power.

Koda enters through the Grand Sluice. A narrow pathway through the sewers leaves her in a gallery overlooking the underground River Zahn, where a torrent of water falls from a grate high above, before climbing to a balcony of the crypt lit by tall candles and paved in granite slabs. Koda examines the architecture and decides that this pathway was built to allow the masters of the Crypt access to the underground river for reasons of smuggling in supplies and materiel, and speculates that she’ll find a storeroom of some description nearby. Rather than moving back into the Crypt, she instead decides to see where the river leads; casting a charm of an air bubble around her head, she makes an elegant dive into the river below.

Moving with confident strides against the flow of the water, she finds herself in an underground cavern. Her magical sense tells her that she is still in the confines of the Crypt. She spots an average chest that has sunk to the bottom of the river at some point in the past, and swims down to nudge it open; she finds a Roc’s Feather, which immolates underwater to infuse her with an unnatural agility. At this point she heads some frantic thrashing and notices that two chickens seem to have made their way into the water. Puzzled, she creates an air bubble around them, and then, after a few seconds of thought, fills the air bubble with fire. She then swims over to the roast chicken bubble and takes a few bites, refreshing her energy. Finally, she continues to head south.

Clambering out of the water she finds a puzzling addition to the crypt: a chicken coop, full of chickens happily clucking and pecking at corn. One of the chickens has been infected by the evil of the place and moves towards her menacingly, so she again applies fire, and then treats herself to a drumstick. The bitter anger of the Vampire Lord who oversees this coop then afflicts her psychically, and without really knowing why she turns around and plunges back into the stream.

The Underground Cavern is unchanged, except that the chicken carcasses have washed away and the average chest has replenished. She grabs hold of an outcrop of rock, trying to arrest her movement in the current to reach the chest and succeeds in doing so - finding a Westbound Compass as she does - but fails to notice that what she had grabbed ahold of is the lid of an ancient tomb that was sunk into this chamber to hide it from prying eyes. Scraping away at the moss that has grown over its surface, she sees a worn surface with very little legible writing: “ANCIENT…. BLOOD… ALL… NIGHT… AIS523”. She kicks back into the flow of the water, and then, as the current starts to take her back towards the sluice, aims a massive bolt of lightning at the tomb, causing it to abruptly explode.

She makes it back to the Grand Sluice just as the Cavern collapses behind her. The current pulls her underneath the water and the pressure from the waterfall batters her around; she looses her grip on her westbound compass and would have been grievously injured if not for the agility inparted by her roc’s feather. Pulling herself out of the water, she sees a chest and a hostile-looking bat with a message tube tied around its neck; she ignores the former and electrocutes the latter. She then exits through a door to the east.

In the next room the corridor has been erased by a collapse in the wall, leading to a scree slope leading south. She slips and slides down and takes the door that she finds on the landing on the other side.

Through the door is a room so dazzlingly bright that she can’t see any details. She fumbles around the wall and finds another door, which she opens and ducks through as quickly as she can.

The Nullith is just a completely smooth, featureless sphereoid room, containing nothing of interest. She spots a door to the west and takes it.

She finds herself back in the Chicken Coop. The magic of the Vampire Lord is still wrathful, and sends her back to the Nullith.

This time she takes the door south.

On the Tenuous Bridge, she slips and bangs her knee on a loose slat, taking one Light Injury. She spots an average chest but, getting fed up of wandering around, she ignores it and continues south.

She exits the crypt onto a narrow ledge overlooking a steep cliff, below which the river Zahn trails lazily towards the sea. She is so distracted by the momentary beauty that she trips over a stalagmite, taking a Light Injury. A glyph belonging to ais523 greedily feeds on her pain and irritation. She notices that the door to the south and the door that she entered through have become magically locked, so despite a sense of familiarity she exits to the east.

The Entrance Vestibule is unchanged since her last visit, including the replenished average chest which she ignores. Remembering where both the south and east exits lead, she heads north.

She finds herself back in the Crypt Entrance. Feeling strongly that the Grand Sluice adventure wasn’t all it cracked up to be, she notes the ingress here and resolves to tell Richardo that the Sluice entrance is a bust. She heads east.

As soon as she enters the Library of Souls she feels immediately calm and at home. Books! Many of them bound in human leather, but still. She spends hours looking at them, aware that they are reading her as much as she is reading them but not caring, understanding that true knowledge is reciprocal. The books feed off of her, sending power to their masters, but she is too absorbed to care. Eventually, she tears herself away from a book long enough to open an average chest - it contains a secret passage map - before realising that she is exhausted and returning to the Mansion.

If Richardo is holding any Treasure, a random piece of it is stashed in the Cathedral.

Something for us to prepare for, each run. Initially wanted to give each character their own separate stash, so that they’ll develop a bit of individual flavour without us having to agree what that is, but the “this selection is purely to add colour” clause feels too load-bearing to casually remove.

Add the following as a new subrule to the rule Crypt Denizens, called Embodiment:

Embodiments are a special kind of Denizen that each represent a Vampire Lord manifesting physically in the Crypt. Each Vampire Lord may have up to one Embodiment at any time, and the location of their Embodiment is publicly tracked.

Embodying is a Power Action with a cost of 1 plus x, where x is an integer of their choosing, which can only be carried out by a Vampire Lord with a Sepulchre who does not already control an Embodiment. When a Vampire Lord Embodies, they create a Denizen with a name of their own name, a Brutality equal to half (rounded up) their Puissance at the time that it was created (after the cost of performing the Embodying Power Action is deducted), a Cunning equal to half (rounded up) their Influence at the time it was created, traits with a total trait cost of up to x, a Sycophancy of themselves, and a Location of a Lit Ordinary Room of their choice.

Swarm of Bats is a Power Action with a cost of 0, and can only be carried out by Vampire Lord with Embodiment Denizens under their control; each Vampire Lord may only perform this action once between each Enter the Crypt action. When carrying out a Swarm of Bats action, a Vampire Lord may change the location of their Embodiment to any Lit Ordinary room.

Disembodying is a mysterious action with a cost of 0. When a Vampire Lord Disembodies they remove their Embodiment from the game, without slaying it.

Embodiments do not roam and cannot be Coerced.

If an Embodiment deals more than one Light Wound to Richardo as a result of a single encounter during the Enter the Crypt action, its owner gains one Blood Mana Crystal in addition to the regular Influence gain. If an Embodiment is slain by Richardo as a result of an encounter during the Enter the Crypt action then its owner is made Dust.

In the rule Crypt Denizens, after the text “A Vampire Lord may not name a Denizen “Dracula””, add “or the name of any Vampire Lord (unless the Denizen is an Embodiment)”.

Add a new dynastic rule called “Readiness” and give it the following text

Each Vampire Lord has a Readiness. Readiness can be one of four values “Ready”, “Watching”, “Waiting”, or “Asleep”

A Vampire Lord may change their Readiness at any time.

Whenever a Power Action is taken, all Vampire Lord’s whose Readiness is set to Watching have their Readiness set to Waiting

If Richardo has Entered the Crypt at least two times since a given Vampire Lord last performed a Power Action or changed their Readiness, any Vampire Lord or Richardo Von Nestor may set that Vampire Lord’s Readiness to Asleep. (Another Vampire Lord performing a Blood Frenzy on the first Vampire Lord’s behalf does not count as the first Vampire Lord performing a Power Action for the purposes of this paragraph)

In “Richardo’s Journey” replace

If it has been at least 24 hours since the Crypt was last entered, and at least 12 hours since the last Power Action was taken, and there are no pending calls for judgement which have the tag “[Pressing]”, then the Organ is Playing.

Add the following step to the Enter the Crypt action immediately before the step beginning “Make a post to the blog summarising this Enter the Crypt action”

Set the Readiness of every Vampire Lord whose Readiness is not Asleep to Waiting

Maybe this will help? Allows people to either go “I’m good, start the run” or “I’m good as long as no one else moves, start the run” or “Nope I’m not good” or “I haven’t been actively playing ignore me”

complete randomness as far as replacing collapsed entrances goes makes things rlly swingy and chaotic; this way makes things more predictable & manipulatable!

Call for Judgment: [Pressing] Because we’ve been Lighting Rooms all wrong

Passes 5-0. Enacted by Brendan. Note that it is no longer possible to change the text of “My Songs Know What Richardo Did In The Dark.”

Adminned at 15 Jul 2021 19:36:05 UTC

Uphold all attempts to Light a Room (or Explore a Room) that failed purely because the room’s Features/Effects were added to, or used to replace, its Effect on the dynastic tracking page, rather than being marked as part of the room’s Effect. Remove any markings on Features/Effects within the ruleset that specify that they are part of the Effect of a particular room (without actually removing the Feature/Effect from the Room’s Effect).

Change the paragraph in “The Crypt of Dracula” that starts “Lighting a Room” to read:

Lighting a Room is a Power Action with a cost of 3 plus the total Shadow scores of the chosen Features. The Vampire Lord carrying it chooses a Dark room, a name, a description, and a set of Features (no two of which may be the same as each other); that room becomes Lit, gains the chosen name and description, loses all its Features and gains the specified Features, and becomes Newly Furnished. When this adds a Feature with the string ‘[x]’ in its description to a Room’s Effect, the Vampire Lord adding it must replace [x] with their own name.

with “Feature”/“Features” changed to “Effect”/“Effects” if “Creature Feature” was enacted.

If “My Songs Know What Richardo Did In The Dark” has not enacted, change “chooses a Dark room” to “chooses a room” in the new text, then amend the text of the proposal “My Songs Know What Richardo Did In The Dark” to “In ‘The Crypt of Dracula’, replace ‘Lighting a Room is a Power Action with a cost of 3 plus the total Shadow scores of the chosen Features. The Vampire Lord carrying it chooses a room’ with ‘Lighting a Room is a Power Action with a cost of 3 plus the total Shadow scores of the chosen Features. The Vampire Lord carrying it chooses a Dark room’.”.

Lighting a Room, as written, requires marking the Features in that room as being part of the room’s Effect (rather than altering the room’s Effect to contain those features) – see my comments on Clucky’s CFJ. So the dynastic tracking page’s list of Effects is all wrong, and Josh’s cleanup proposal accidentally removed every Feature from every room (which in turn means that the gamestate is nothing like we think it is because all the Puissance, Influence, etc. values are wrong). We definitely need a fix for that.

This upholds all the non-scam attempts to Light a Room, and refund’s Clucky’s (under this interpretation, it wouldn’t do what Clucky wanted it to, and Clucky probably doesn’t want to waste the Puissance).

This also fixes the Lighting a Room action, making “My Songs Know What Richardo Did In The Dark” redundant, so it refunds the proposal slot Clucky spent on that.

Edited to remove the interaction with Clucky’s CFJ, now that that’s passed. Also makes the scam work, given that we’ve decided that it does.

I lit an already lit room under this phrasing

“The Vampire Lord carrying it out may select a room and set it to Lit, giving it a name and a description, marking it as Newly Furnished, and any number of Features as its Effect (or “none” if it has no Features),”

I gave it a name, set it to list, gave it description, and picked no Features as its Effect so set its Effect to none.

Ais is trying to argue that the features should be appended. But to me the rules are clear: you pick any number of features as its effect. None of the features selected currently shown for the blinding cave were selected by me when performing this action, so the effect should’ve been set to none.

Whenever Richardo’s starting location would not be a Lit Room, Richardo von Nestor or any Vampire Lord can change Richardo’s starting location to a random Lit Room”, add:

When a Room becomes Richardo’s starting location for the first time, remove any effects in that Room and any Lit room orthogonally adjacent to it. If any Vampire Lord has a sepulchre in any of those rooms than that Vampire Lord may once change the location of their sepulchre to another legal location before Richardo’s next Enter the Crypt action; if they have not done so by the next time the Organ is Playing then while the Organ is Playing any Vampire Lord or Richardo von Nestor may set them to having no sepulchre.

Remove all effect in the Grand Sluice and any Lit Room orthogonally adjacent to the Grand Sluice. If the Vampire Lords named ais523 and/or Kevan named a Lit Ordinary Room that is not already another Vampire Lord’s Sepulchre in their EVC to this proposal then set their respective Sepulchre to that room; otherwise, set their Sepulchres to blank.

Story Post: Koda’s First Expedition

Okay, this is a long one.

The Witch Koda, having spent her formative years learning ancestral magic at the hands of her wandering caravan of mystics and shamans, has finally found herself in Zahndorf. Sensing the massive evil beneath the Crypt, she resolves to explore and flush it out, using her magic and determination as needs be. The crypt feeds on her naivete, giving each Vampire Lord both influence and power.

She enters through the Crypt Entrance, marvelling at the religious tilework and noting the boot scuffs left by Richardo on his previous adventures. She notes that the majority of the footprints are heading north so she decides to do likewise.

In Room BA, she is enchanted by the tiny hockey-puck creatures. She spends a moment watching them before noticing that their magic is empowering the masters of the Crypt, so decides to move on. As she prepares to chose an exit, she notices an average chest, which she opens, finding a secret passage map. What luck! She uses it to exit through a hidden portal.

The underground pathway takes her to the Gravity Room. Impressed with the cantrips being used to distort the space, she nevertheless steers herself adroitly to the fine chest on an upper walkway. Opening it, she finds a secret passage map and a rod of smoothing, but while she is examining her horde she is surprised from behind by a Dimensional Jellyfish warping in from non-euclidian space. With quick reactions, Koda blasts the jellyfish with magical fire, but the Jellyfish - which is Evasive and Mischievous - stings the Rod out of her hand before escaping through a gravity well. Koda swears to herself and then uses the map to swim into a gravity warp.

The gravity warp pulls her through the dark undercroft of the crypt, spitting her out in the Prison Cells. The gravity effect accelerates her out of the secret passage, slamming her face-first into the metal bars of a cell, causing a Grievous Injury that Kevan’s Glyph responds to. Koda curses and wipes the blood from her face, and sees that the east and south exits are blocked; so she exits to the west.

Koda now finds herself in the Blood Pit, a once-beautiful stairwell that has been torn apart and hosed down with viscera by some unholy rage. She becomes Enriched to no great effect, and then, finding the north exit blocked, exits to the south.

This causes an “a-ha!” moment for her as she re-enters the Gravity Room. She is surprised to find that the fine chest has replenished itself, so she casts a Cantrip of Levitation on herself and springs up to the ledge to claim it. Inside she finds a roc’s feather and a silver-tipped stake; she puts the former in her hair, immediately feeling agile, and keeps the other just in case.

She exits to the south, moving through to a cobwebbed cellar. She tests the trapdoor in the ceiling but finds it sealed tight. She sees an average chest but decides to ignore it, and presses on to the East.

In the Silent Chamber, she finds an eerie silence, swaddling a vast stone cartouche upon which the words “Beneath here lie the immortal sins of the Vampire Lord Jumble” are drawn in heiroglyphs. She gathers her magic and blasts the top off of the ancient stone sarcophagus, revealing the timeless, beautiful face of Jumble beneath it. She regards the vampire with curiosity for a second, then plunges the stake deep into its heart, and continues to observe as the body thrashes and bucks, its essence ripping away into dust and hatred. As she makes notes, she fails to notice the Sceneray-Chewing Rat that she almost offhandedly killed after magically propelling the lid of a sarcophacus into its still-twitching corpse. She exits east.

In the Rehearsal Hall she finds ancient music stands and an architecture that seems designed to magnify acoustics; she also finds another sepulchre, this one made of etched steel carved into elegant patterns by a master-craftsperson. On its lid is the inscription “I am, and will always be, chiiika.” Lamenting her lack of more silver-tipped stakes, she instead passes through to the east.

This next room is, to Koda, both horrifying and compelling. In the centre of the room a dead tree juts from the ground; impaled into the trunk is an ancient spear that Koda, try as she might with both strength and magic, cannot budge. The tree is bleeding a sap that looks and smells like a rancid mucus, and someone has carved demonic sigils into the bark that even Koda, with her deep esoteric learning, can’t decypher. A pitiful, weak creature calling itself the “Assistant Stage Manager” is also here, grovelling in the shadow of th tree stump; she imolates it with a blast of contemptuous lightning. She has an immediate, strong impetus to cut her own hand open and bleed onto the stump, but she pushes the feeling away and moved back to the west.

Re-entering the Rehearsal Hall, she decides that chiiika’s sepulchre can’t be allowed to persist, so she casts a cantrip that starts a bass note vibrating around the ceiling chambers of the room. She leaves to the west, knowing that eventually the vibrations of the sound will cause the room to collapse in on itself, crushing the metal sepulchre in the process.

She dashes through the Silent Chamber, in which the still-violently-deteriorating body of Jumble is releasing powerful forces that are tearing apart the room around him.

Pausing for breath in the Cobwebbed Cellar, she decides now to open the chest. Finding a Holy Tincture, she drinks it, restoring a little energy. He exits to the north.

Curiously, she finds that the fine chest in the Gravity Room has once again replenished. Opening it, she finds a Secret Passage Map and a Holy Distillate. She consumes the distillate and uses the map to locate another secret gravity well.

This well spits her out in a Shattered Stairway, a once-grand curving stairwell that has now been damaged and smoothed over. A Laughing Gargoyle moves to menace her, but she impales it with a shard of ice magic and continues along her way to the North.

In the Entrance Vestibule she finds an average chest, which she ignores. She exits to the east.

She finds herself back in the blood pit, its gore-stained walls slowly dripping blood into the pool coagulating at the bottom. She continues to the east.

Back in the Prison Cells, she senses the glyph of Kevan respond to her presence, willing her to have an accident, but her roc’s feather grants her agility and she navigates the treacherous terrains safely. She notes again the blocked exits and continues to the North.

In the Forgotten Corridor, Koda immediately notices something that had escaped Richardo’s notice: a trapdoor high in the ceiling, allowing alternative entrance into the crypt. Koda makes a note of this discovery, but while she is so distracted, the magic of the room takes hold of her and before she can respond, she is pushed back through the exit to the south. The magic interacts with her own rituals strangely, however, and gives her a premonition of the future: by setting foot in this room she has enacted the enchantment upon the sepulchre of Raven1207, which was present in the room but hidden, causing the coffin to slam into the doors and walls with a magical ferocity that the Vampire Lord within would not be able to tame. Eventually the forces so unleashed would destroy the room, meaning that its ingress could not be used. However, the magic suggested a new ingress location elsewhere in the crypt: the Grand Sluice has a maintenance port that is accessible from the Zahndorf sewers. Koda makes a note of this as she is propelled from the room.

She returns back through the Prison Cells and the Blood Pit to the Entrance Vestibule, where, finally exhausted, she decides to retreat. By instinct she heads towards von Nestor Manor, where she meets Richardo and spends the night swapping stories and comparing scars.

Proposal: Penolpa’s Purification Project

Enacted popular, 5-1. Josh

Adminned at 15 Jul 2021 08:21:07 UTC

Add a subrule to the Crypt of Dracula called “Purification”

Some rooms are Purified. Purified rooms always Lit have a background color of #99F.

If a Purified room contains a feature or effect, any Vampire Lord or Richardo von Nestor may remove it.
If a Purified room is ever the location of a Vampire Lord’s Sepulchre, any Vampire Lord or Richardo von Nestor may set that Vampire Lord’s Sepulchre to be empty.
If a Purified room is ever the location of a Crypt Denizen, any Vampire Lord or Richardo von Nestor may cause that Crypt Denizen to Roam until either it has Roamed five times since its location was not Purified (in which case it is slain) or its location is not Purified

If a Purified room contains a feature, is the location of a Vampire Lord’s Sepulchre, or is the location of a Crypt Denizen, the Enter the Crypt action may not be performed.

Ritual Chambers may never become Purified.

If every room is either Purified, a Ritual Chamber, or the location of a Vampire Lord’s Sepulchre, a Vampire Lord who does not have a Sepulchre may randomly select a Purified Room and cause it to no longer be Purified.

In “Richardo’s Journey” replace “Reduce his Energy by 1” with “If Richardo’s current room is not Purified, reduce his Energy by 1”

In “The Crypt of Dracula” replace

The Crypt Entrance may never have the effect “This room is Daunting”; if ever it has that effect then any Vampire Lord or Richardo von Nestor may remove it.

Whenever a room gains the effect “This room is Daunting”, it also gains the effect “Sinister”, which cannot otherwise be added to a room.

Whenever a room has the effect “Cursed”, any Vampire Lord may make that room Swallowed by Darkness; when a room is Swallowed by a Darkness, make it Dark, removing that room’s name, description and effect, and then award each Vampire Lord: 1 Puissance, plus 1 Puissance per Sigil, 3 Puissance per Glyph, and 3 Puissance per Sepulchre, owned by that Vampire Lord in that room. When a room that contains a Vampire Lord’s Sepulchre is Swallowed by Darkness, that Vampire Lord’s Sepulchre is blanked.

with

Ritual Chambers may never have the effect “This room is Daunting”; if any it has that effect then any Vampire Lord or Richardo von Nestor may remove that effect from the respective chamber.

Whenever a room gains the effect “This room is Daunting”, it also gains the effect “Sinister”, which cannot otherwise be added to a room.

Whenever a room has the effect “Cursed”, any Vampire Lord or Richardo Von Nestor may Offer a Prayer to Penolpa to Sanctify the room. When a room is Sanctified award each Vampire Lord: 1 Puissance, plus 1 Puissance per Sigil, 3 Puissance per Glyph, and 3 Puissance per Sepulchre, owned by that Vampire Lord in that room; remove any of its effects; Blank any Vampire Lord’s Sepulchre whose Sepulchre is that room; and then make it Purified.

In the rule Crypt of Dracula, change the paragraph that starts “Lighting a Room is a Power Action with a cost of 3” to read as follows:

Lighting a Room is a Power Action with a cost of 3 plus the total Shadow scores of the Effects being placed in that Room (the total cost of this action cannot be less than 1). The Vampire Lord carrying it out may select a room and set it to Lit, giving it a name and a description, marking it as Newly Furnished, and any number of Effects (or “none” if it has no Effects), in an order of the Vampire Lord’s choosing. A Room may not have more than one copy of an Effect. When adding an Effect with the string ‘[x]’ in its description, a Vampire Lord must replace [x] with their own name. A Room may be considered to have any property implied by an effect (e.g. a room can be said to “have a Glyph”, “be blocked from the north”, “be Daunting”), although the text of the Effect is sovereign for determining such properties.

In the same rule, change “There is a list of Lit rooms which is publicly tracked, showing - for each room - the name of the room, a brief flavour-text description of its contents, and its effect on Richardo von Nestor when he enters it” to read “There is a list of Lit rooms which is publicly tracked, showing - for each room - the name of the room, a brief flavour-text description of its contents, and any Effects it has.”

In the rule Richardo’s Journey, change

Apply any effects of the features of his current location, in the order that they are listed in the rule Features, to Richardo

to read

Apply any Effects at his current location, in the order that they are listed in the rule Effects, to Richardo

Throughout the rest of the ruleset, wherever it appears, change the word “Feature” to “Effect” and “Features” to “Effects”, including renaming the rule Features to Effects.

The distinction between Features and Effects isn’t really useful.

Proposal: You can’t fool me twice

Timed out and failed, 1-3. Josh

Adminned at 15 Jul 2021 08:16:54 UTC

In “Richardo’s Journey”, change

When Richardo von Nestor is Grievously Injured by an Effect, his Energy is reduced by 6.

to

When Richardo von Nestor is Grievously Injured by an Effect, a Treasure, or by Encountering a Denizen, his Energy is reduced by 6 and he becomes Agile.

In “Features”, change

Richardo von Nestor is Grievously Injured; if he is Agile he instead is Lightly Wounded. (+5)

to

Richardo von Nestor is Grievously Injured. (+6)

and update all room effects accordingly.

The generally agreed-upon strategy at the moment seems to be to place Grievous Injury deathtraps in central locations and hope that Richardo hits them as often as possible (in particular, he’s quite capable of hitting them multiple times in a run, and probably will due to the random-walk nature of the Crypt). This is normally done with “unless he is Agile” features, because the stronger version hardly does anything (and is almost always inferior to separate Grievous Injury and Light Wound features).

This buffs the stronger version, and nerfs the weaker version, in order to a) make the standard strategy weaker and b) make one of the alternatives a bit stronger; Richardo now can’t be affected by more than one “standard” deathtrap per run, but you can have a harder-to-stop version if you’re prepared to pay for it.

This also fixes the rules for Grievous Injuries in a similar way to my CFJ for Light Wounds (although unlike with Light Wounds, the previous version wasn’t technically broken, just a time bomb that might catch out future proposals that introduce new methods of Grievous Injury, so it doesn’t need a CFJ to fix).

Uphold any reductions of Richardo’s Energy that were made upon Richardo being Lightly Wounded by Encountering a Denizen or that were made due to the Bandages Treasure replacing a Grievous Injury.

Hey, so did you know that Light Wounds from Denizens don’t actually do anything? We’ve been playing as though they did, but nothing in the rules said that they did anything, so they didn’t (the term is only defined for Effects specifically).

The “Bandages” treasure had a similar issue (I don’t think this was ever used but I’ve put in a fix just in case): it would stop a Grievous Injury, but the Light Wound that it replaced it with wouldn’t do anything.

Proposal: The Order of von Nestor

Adminned at 14 Jul 2021 14:20:39 UTC

Remove the text “This selection is purely to add colour to the description of the Enter the Crypt action, and when describing such an action he may use the name of the selected character to refer to Richardo von Nestor freely; however, regardless of which character is chosen, for the purposes of any rule, Richardo von Nestor continues to be Richardo von Nestor.” from the rule Run Initialisation.

Add a new subrule to the rule Richardo’s Journey, called Characters:

The different characters interact with the Crypt slightly differently.

The Witch Koda has an academic interest in ritual chambers and is slightly more likely to move towards them. She can also ignore some kinds of magical effects when moving through the Crypt. She is, however, unarmed and thus extremely vulnerable to Denizens.

The Mysterious Traveller Drol Eripmav hates Vampire Lords and is slightly more likely to seek out their Sepulchres. They are also unafraid, and is not deterred by Daunting rooms. They are, however, uninterested in material goods and thus always ignore chests.

A Chosen Character is a status possessed by Richardo von Nestor, and the selection of a Character does not imply for the purposes of any rule that Richardo von Nestor is not Richardo von Nestor.

If Proposal: The Crypt Never Sleeps was enacted, in the above rule change “Daunting” to “Sinister”.

In Richardo’s Journey, change the the bullet point that starts “Create a list of Lit rooms orthogonally adjacent” and the sublist below it to read as follows:

** Create a list of Lit rooms orthogonally adjacent to Richardo’s current location (or a list of all Lit Rooms, if Richardo has just used a Secret Passage Map). Amend the list as follows, in this order, except that a step is skipped if it would cause the list to become empty, and/or if a Feature forces Richardo to move to a room that would be removed:
*** Remove orthogonally adjacent rooms in the direction of an exit from Richardo’s current room that is blocked;
*** Remove rooms with a “This room is Daunting” effect, unless the chosen Character is Mysterious Traveller Drol Eripmav and the room also has a “Sinister” effect;
*** Remove Richardo’s previous location.
*** If the selected Character the Witch Koda, identify which orthogonally adjacent rooms to her current location are closest (by taxicab distance) to a Ritual Chamber and add that room (or those rooms, if there is a tie) to the list, unless they are in a direction that is blocked.
*** If the selected Character the Mysterious Traveller Drol Eripmav, identify which orthogonally adjacent rooms to their current location are closest (by taxicab distance) to a Sepulchre and add that room (or those rooms, if there is a tie) to the list, unless they are in a direction that is blocked.

If Proposal: Smells Like Vamp Spirit was enacted, add “Remove all Familiar Rooms” after “Remove Richardo’s previous location” at the same list level.

In the rule Features, to the Features “Richardo von Nestor’s next Move in this Enter the Crypt action must have his immediate previous location as its destination” and “Richardo von Nestor loses all of his equipped Items”, add “unless the selected Character is the Witch Koda”. In the same rule, to the Features “Richardo approaches a fine treasure chest” and “Richardo approaches a average treasure chest”, add “unless the selected Character is Mysterious Traveller Drol Eripmav”. Update all Effects derived from those Features to reflect the new wording.

In the rule “Denizen Encounters”, after the text “he then randomly generates a number between 1 and his current energy”, add “(unless the selected Character is the Witch Koda, in which case this number is always set to be 1)”.

Proposal: The Crypt Never Sleeps

Enacted popular, 6-0. Josh

Adminned at 12 Jul 2021 16:16:11 UTC

In the rule Richardo’s Journey, change “Daunting rooms;” to “Rooms with a “This room is Daunting” effect;”

Remove the effect “This room is Daunting” from the Crypt Entrance.

Add the following to the end of the rule Features:

If a room loses the effect “This room is Daunting” it also looses any “Sinister”, “Wretched” or “Cursed” effects it has.

In the rule Richardo’s Journey, to the bullet point that reads “Remove the “This room is Daunting.” Feature from all rooms that Richardo entered during a Move within this Enter the Crypt action”, add

For each room which includes an “Sinister” effect, remove the “Sinister” effect and give it a “Wretched” effect. For each room with a “Wretched” effect, remove the “Wretched” effect and give it a “Cursed” effect.

Add “Sinister” to the effects of every room with a “This room is Daunting” effect.

Story Post: Richardo’s Fourteenth Expedition

Richardo feels a tremendous surge of power from the full moon, and resolves to enter the Crypt. His energy is set at 20 and the Vampire Lords gain power and influence as he approaches.

Richardo starts by moving south from the Crypt Entrance.

In the Vestibule he finds an average chest; kicking it open, he finds a rusty crossbow. However, he doesn’t manage to equip it in time before being assaulted by a Laughing Gargoyle; despite all his energy, he fumbles his whip and takes a slash, which inflicts a Light Injury upon him. Humiliated, he escapes through the exit to the east.

Scattered from his encounter with the gargoyle, he slips on the Infinite Stairway, slamming down the stairs painfully and taking a Grievous Injury. Chiiika’s Glyph responds, giving her a dollop of influence. Richardo stumbles to his feet and exits to the north.

In the Library of Souls Richardo finds an average chest, which he ignores. The books continue to write tales of the immortality of the Vampire Lords upon themselves. Richardo surveys his options; the exits to the north and west are daunting, and south is where he came from, so he had to exit to the east.

The magic of the forgotten corridor, as usual, returns Richardo promptly to where he came from.

In the Library of Souls, Richardo once again finds the the doors to the north and west are daunting, and east is where he came from, obliging him to return to the infinite stairway. First he opens the chest, finding a Northbound Compass, which he pockets for his next Move.

However, he falls down the stairs of the Infinite Stairway again, taking another Grievous Injury and landing painfully on the previously-unnoticed Sepulchre of lemonfanta, shattering the crypt and unleashing its energy on the room around him and forcing him to retreat. Chiiika’s glyph once again flared with unholy power before collapsing under the pressure of lemonfanta’s dissolution.

In the rule “Run Initialisation”, replace the following:

10-15 lit rooms: Starting energy 12
16-20 lit rooms: Starting energy 16
21-30 lit rooms: Starting energy 20

16-20 lit rooms: Starting energy 12
21-30 lit rooms: Starting energy 15
31-40 lit rooms: Starting energy 21
41-64 lit rooms: Starting energy 27

In the rule “Treasure”, change “to gain two Energy” to “to gain 3 Energy” and “to gain 5 Energy” to “to gain 7 Energy”.

In “Denizen Encounters”, after “a number between 1 and his current energy”, add “(or between 1 and 12, if his energy is above 12)”.

halving the boosts from waxing gibbous, bc i don’t think it’ll actually speed up the game and having starting energy counts too high negates the value of ingresses and powerful crypt denizens! & i think ingresses are the best bet at combatting the deathtrap situation
plus boosting the energy-increasing treasures & capping richardo’s combat die to a d12 to fit this newly-increased energy level

Proposal: An Escalation of Crystals

Timed out and enacted, 4-1. Josh

Adminned at 11 Jul 2021 21:55:12 UTC

If the Organ is Playing, undo the enactment of this proposal (leaving it Pending) and ignore the rest of the proposal. (In other words, this proposal can’t be enacted while the Organ is Playing, you have to wait for it to stop.)

In the rule “Power Actions”, change the text of the bullet point that contains “Distilling” to:

Distilling is a Mysterious Action with a cost of 2. The Vampire Lord carrying it out must spend Influence equal to 3 plus the number of Blood Mana Crystals they have; if they do, they gain one Blood Mana Crystal.

and move it to the second-last position on the list.

Change the text of the bullet point that contains “Shattering” to:

Shattering is a Mysterious Action, that each Vampire Lord can perform only once in the dynasty, with a cost of 0. The Vampire Lord carrying it out must spend one Blood Mana Crystal; if they do, they gain 10 Puissance (even if they are Dust, as an exception to the rule “Status”) and may choose to set their Allegiance to none.

For each Vampire Lord who had one or more Blood Mana Crystals at the time that this proposal enacted (or, if “Transylvaninflation” or “Count Von Count” enacted, the first time at which one of those proposals enacted), remove those Blood Mana Crystals, then that Vampire Lord gains 8 Influence and 1 Puissance for each Blood Mana Crystal removed (except that if this would increase the Puissance of a Vampire Lord above 13, it becomes 13 instead, or stays at its current value if already above 13).

Set the time at which Richardo most recently Entered the Crypt to the time at which this proposal was enacted.

A scaling blood mana crystal mechanic, along the same lines as Brendan’s.

The changes are that this action is no longer a daily (instead, it costs Puissance), and that people who bought blood mana crystals at the “old” rate are refunded (and then get to buy them at the new rate instead). Additionally, Shattering is made once-per-dynasty to avoid Influence to Puissance conversion loops (I doubt it makes sense to use the action any more often than that).

This also delays the next expedition 24 hours to give players who had Blood Mana Crystals time to start spending their refunded Influence. Note that they’re unlikely to have enough Puissance to spend it all at once – this may lead to a mad scramble to attack their Sepulchres, but that would have been present earlier if this rule had “been there all along”, and so it makes sense to replicate it now.

Note to admins: according to “Representations of the Gamestate”, to implement the “Set the time at which Richardo most recently Entered the Crypt” step, you need to make a note explaining the change in the edit summary of your edit to the Zahndorf Crypt wiki page (because the time of Entering the Crypt is technically tracked in the history of the wiki page it modifies).

Add a new dynastic rule called “Predictions” with the following text

Each Vampire Lord has a Prediction, which is a publicly tracked string that is either the name of a room or empty and defaults to being empty. If a Vampire Lord’s prediction is ever something which isn’t empty of the name of a room, it becomes empty.

When the crypt next settles, remove this paragraph from the ruleset. The rest of this rule is flavourtext.

If they have not done so since the last time any Vampire Lord took a Power Action or Richardo entered the crypt, a Vampire Lord may change their prediction to any valid value.

Add the following step after the “If Richardo’s current room contains a Threat or Denizen, add the “This room is Daunting.” Threat to it.” step in Richardo’s Journey

For each Vampire Lord whose Prediction matches Richardo’s current room, give that Vampire Lord 2 Puissance. Then set the Prediction of every Vampire Lord to be empty.

Story Post: Richardo’s Thirteenth Expedition

Reinvigorated by his long rest, Richardo sets out again for the Crypt of Dracula. The Vampire Lords gain energy from his approach and their Sepulchres as always.

Starting from the Crypt Entrance, Richardo proceeds north.

In Room BA, Richardo takes a half-hearted swing at some of the cleaning creatures, to no avail. He sees that the chest that used to be here has returned, albeit somewhat shabbier, but ignores it for now. He proceeds east as the Crypt responds to his presence.

In the Broken Stage, Richardo finds that the hole in the floor that he fell through has mysteriously been repaired. He proceeds cautiously into the room, feeling like all of the statues are watching him. He is so hyper-aware of the statue monster that he fails to notice when a cornice from the balcony seating area slips away from its concrete fixing, and falls, inflicting a Grievous Injury to his shoulder. Once again, this is followed by a massive attack from the statue creature, which inflicts four light injuries on Richardo. He retreats to recover from his wounds.

In “The Crypt of Dracula”, change

I think the map would be easier to use (and also a bit prettier) if the Daunting rooms were marked on it.

A Daunting Sepulchre can be created via Blood Frenzy, so the rule has to take the possibility into account rather than causing the actiom to fail. (Or maybe we want Blood Frenzies that create a Daunting Sepulchre to fail?)

As suggested in comments in A Pun on Alacrity. The current round could have been ended between 7pm and 2am yesterday, but only if Josh had the time and inclination to process a full Crypt Entry at that moment, which he evidently and quite reasonably didn’t. Unless explicitly stated otherwise, all random selections that the rules require Richardo von Nestor to make are considered to be secretly random.

Most steps of Entering the Crypt say to do things at “secretly random”, but a few are merely “random”, which means Richardo should be rolling public dice for them, and he hasn’t been. (A tacked-on clause to address this a few weeks ago failed, and I at least misremembered it as having enacted.)

Proposal: A Moment Frozen In Time

Self-killed. Josh

Adminned at 09 Jul 2021 19:21:22 UTC

Create a new dynastic rule, “Dynastic Delay”:

When a proposal modifies the dynastic part of the ruleset, the “Ruleset” wiki page is updated immediately to apply the effects, but the dynastic part of the ruleset is not modified immediately; rather, the specified updates to the dynastic ruleset are applied at the next time the Crypt Settles or a Declaration of Victory is enacted. This overrides the normal method of enacting a proposal.

The dynastic part of the ruleset is therefore not tracked on the current version of the wiki page “Ruleset”, but rather via the history of the wiki’s “Ruleset” page, checking to see what it said at the most recent point in time at which the Crypt Settled, a Declaration of Victory was enacted, or this rule was created. The current version of the page “Ruleset” tracks the updates to dynastic rules that will be applied in the future, in addition to tracking the core, special case and appendix rules.

Admins may, at any time, update the blognomic.org blog sidebar to contain a link to the current (rather than future) dynastic ruleset (e.g. via use of the wiki’s “permalink” feature), and should do so whenever the link is missing or out of date.

There hasn’t been an Expedition since Monday, and the reason is that people have been waiting for proposals to enact before spending their Puissance (a delay that has become much longer recently because many proposals have timed out despite having become Popular hours earlier). This is leading to the game moving very slowly (as different people were waiting for different proposals and they haven’t been enacted in batches like they usually are). In order to fix this, make it so that there’s never any benefit to waiting. Sadly, this looks a little more complex than it actually is, in order to avoid orphan variables (or in this case, orphaned pending ruleset updates).

Note that only changes by proposal are delayed; if something breaks, we can use a CFJ to fix things (although I’m hoping that won’t be necessary). In case you’re wondering, it is possible to change the history of a wiki page via CFJ (although I’m definitely hoping *that* won’t be necessary!).

Probably this should become a Special Case rule in the future – lots of dynasties would benefit from it – but it’s hard to track the equivalent of Entering the Crypt / the Crypt Settling between dynasties.

Reformat the rule “Features” so that every definition of a Feature starts with a bullet point (without changing the meaning).

In the rule “Richardo’s Journey”, change the bullet point that starts “Secretly randomly select a Lit room” into the following bullet points:

  • Create a list of Lit rooms orthogonally adjacent to Richardo’s current location (or a list of all Lit Rooms, if Richardo has just used a Secret Passage Map). Remove the following rooms from the list, in this order, except that a removal is skipped if it would cause the list to become empty, and/or if a Feature forces Richardo to move to a room that would be removed:
    • Orthogonally adjacent rooms in the direction of an exit from Richardo’s current room that is blocked (due to a Feature);
    • Daunting rooms;
    • Richardo’s previous location;
    • Orthogonally adjacent rooms in a direction that Richardo remembers going in from his current room (due to a Feature).
  • Remove all Memory features from Richardo’s current room.
  • Secretly randomly select a room from the created list (unless a Treasure or Feature specifies some other way to select from the list, in which case follow its directions instead). Richardo enters that room: it becomes Richardo’s new current location. If this moved Richardo to an orthogonally adjacent room, add a Memory feature to the room Richardo left, specifying which direction he left it in.

Update all references to “that room” in the subsequent five bullet points to say “the selected room” instead.

If Josh is interested in making the dynasty less random, this is my own suggestion – it causes Richardo to tend to go in directions he hasn’t gone recently, thus reducing the randomness in Richardo’s movement over time. Memories are tracked using Features, mostly to save horizontal on the sidebar (which is already struggling in that regard); I don’t think it’ll ever make sense to buy these, given how temporary they are (and how blocking the exit is just a more powerful way to do the same thing), but they need a positive cost to stop people giving Richardo a sense of deja vu for free.

I also fixed the interactions between the various “you can’t/must go this way” features, explicitly explaining how to resolve cases where Richardo is being pulled in multiple directions.

This is intended as a competitor to “Get Smart, Richardo”; the two aren’t really compatible.

Please idle me

I expected to have a lot more time. Maybe another time.

Add a new subrule to the rule The Crypt of Dracula, called Threat:

Each Room has a score for Threat, which must be an integer that cannot be lower than 1, and which is not publicly tracked, although it may be noted in the public tracking page for convenience.

A Room’s Threat is calculated as follows, with effects applied in the order that they are listed (any effect that would reduce a room’s Threat below 1, even if only temporarily, instead sets it to 1):
* Each Room has a base threat of 1.
* For each Threat Feature whose Effect is in a Room, add 2 to its Threat.
* For each Denizen in a Room, add 1 to its Threat. For each Denizen in that room whose combined Cunning and Brutality is greater than 5, add an additional 1.
* For each Opportunity Feature in a Room, subtract 1 from its Threat.
* If a Room is a Sepulchre, add 1 to its Threat.
* If a room is Daunting, or is the room from which Richardo most recently moved, add 3 to its Threat.

When Richardo Picks a Destination, he must:
* Evaluate the rooms to which he could legally move (the ‘pool’), which by default are the Lit rooms that are orthogonally adjacent to his current room;
* For each room in that pool, calculate its Threat;
* Secretly-randomly select a room from that pool, which each room’s chance of being selected being inversely proportionate to its relative Threat (specifically: for each room, divide 1 by their Threat, and then allocate outcomes proportionately; eg if Richard were Picking a Destination and his choices were a room with 3 Threat, 5 Threat and 1 Threat, then the first room would have a roughly 22% chance of being selected, the second would have approx 13% chance, and the third would have 65% chance.)
* The room so selected is the Destination for that Move.

In the rule Richardo’s Journey, replace the text “Secretly randomly select a Lit room that is orthogonally adjacent to his current room and change his location to be that room. When randomly selecting a room for this step, Richardo may only select a Room which is Daunting and/or was his immediate previous location if it is the only option in the set of rooms he is randomly choosing from” with the following:

Pick a Destination, and change Richardo’s location to be that Destination.

In the rule Features change “Richardo von Nestor’s next Move in this Enter the Crypt action must have his immediate previous location as its destination” to “When Richardo von Nestor Picks a Destination from this Room, every room other than his immediate previous location is considered to have a Threat of 10.” In the same rule, in the Threats table, change each instance of “is blocked” to “gains 2 Threat”. Update the effects of any Rooms that have any of these Features accordingly.

In the rule Treasures, change the text “Richardo immediately uses this item and must randomly select from any Lit room to be his next destination” to read “Richardo immediately uses this item. The next time Richardo Picks a Destination, the pool includes all Lit Rooms; this supersedes the impact of any effects in his current room, and the effect of any other Items Richardo might be holding.” In the same room, for the four Compass items, change the text “Richardo selects that option and ceases to hold this item” to “Richardo uses this item and the next time he Picks a Destination the pool only includes the room to that direction; this supersedes the impact of any effects in his current room.”

Please check my maths on inverse relative threat, I am very stupid and had to think about it for a long time. (I think I’m basically doing: any room has an inverse threat score of 1/x, which then get scaled up to whole numbers - does that sound about right?)

Also this might be a disruptive change to the way the game works relatively late in the day. I have never really liked how random Richardo’s movement was so this is attempting to smooth out some of the lumps.

Call for Judgment: Basic Bounce

Enacted popular, 7-0. Josh

If Call for Judgment: Bouncing doesn’t work like that was enacted then this CfJ does nothing; if Call for Judgment: Bouncing doesn’t work like that is still pending then fail it.

If they were not correctly applied, uphold all resolutions of the “Richardo von Nestor is moved back to his previous location” effect that have occurred in Enter the Crypt actions prior to the enactment of this CfJ.

Change the text of the feature (and the effect, in every room in which it appears) “Richardo von Nestor is moved back to his previous location” to read “Richardo von Nestor’s next Move in this Enter the Crypt action must have his immediate previous location as its destination”.

A minimally-invasive resolution to the issue of bounces.

Proposal: Live, Laugh, Veto [Appendix]

Timed out 4 votes to 5 with one DEF going against. Failed by Kevan.

Adminned at 08 Jul 2021 13:42:43 UTC

Add a new rule to the Appendix section, called “Imperial Styles”:-

The Richardo von Nestor may announce their Imperial Style for a dynasty, to inform Vampire Lords of how they intend to behave during it. An Imperial Style is a list of any number of keywords from the following lists, such as “Protective, Designer, Casual, Scam-Neutral”. It puts no constraint on the Richardo von Nestor’s behaviour, and simply serves as a guide.

Proposal style:

* Designer (will attempt to build and maintain a playable game, balancing it accordingly)
* Gardener (will keep the dynasty tidy but try not to influence its direction too much)
* Onlooker (will let the dynasty become what it becomes)

Player protection:

* Protective (when taking any actions - including voting - will try to be fair to all players, including potential future players)
* Laissez-faire (will not consider fairness when making such decisions)
* Dungeonmaster (will target leading players, or support aggressive moves against them, if they feel this makes the game more interesting)

Desired workload:

* Powerhouse (happy to process frequent, complex game actions and track secret information)
* Casual (happy to process a moderate level of game actions, and simple tracking)
* Hands-off (would prefer all game actions to be left to the players)

Attitude to scams:

* Scam-Friendly (won’t remark on or move to close loopholes in proposals or the ruleset; will gladly assist a player’s scam if privately asked to)
* Scam-Neutral (won’t remark on or move to close loopholes in proposals or the ruleset; may assist a scam if the rules allow them to)
* Scam-Averse (will alert players to any loopholes they notice; will veto major scams; will only assist a scam if the rules require them to)

Miscellaneous:

* Wildcard (may choose to deviate from their style at any time during a dynasty)

Running this idea up again, in a much broader form. Josh’s “voluntary but nonbinding outline” of their intended Imperial style was welcome for setting a clear tone at the start of the dynasty, but a short essay is hard to remember the specifics of, weeks later - and I think Josh’s unstated attitude towards scams, as Emperor, is something that regular players might be able to guess, but that new players would have to wait and see.

There’s undoubtedly other stuff that it’d be useful to put in a style, and I’m not sure this really captures the question of how an Emperor will actually vote on stuff, but consider it a first draft to be iterated if it passes. If an Emperor feels that they can’t announce their personal style because something doesn’t quite fit, they can describe what they mean and propose to update the rule.

Call for Judgment: Richardo, are you too chicken to enter the crypt?

In “Richardo’s Journey”, change the bullet point that says

Remove the “This room is Daunting.” Feature from all rooms that Richardo entered during this Enter the Crypt action

to instead say

Remove the “This room is Daunting.” Feature from all rooms that Richardo entered during a Move within this Enter the Crypt action

So after a frenzy of Blood Frenzies, Richardo’s starting location became Daunting, and I just realised it’s ambiguous how to interpret the wording of the Daunting-removal effect. We should probably have an agreement on what the correct interpretation is *before* the next Journey, because it’s inevitably going to come up then.

My own interpretation is that Richardo doesn’t enter the place he started at (unless he goes back there later), he just starts there. (This is consistent with the way that Features of Richardo’s starting location don’t trigger unless he moves away from it and comes back again; it doesn’t make much sense for him to think the room is safe to enter if he hasn’t done anything that would trigger traps there. It’s also consistent with the way that the effect doesn’t actually make him too afraid to enter the Crypt, not even in a “this is the only possibility” sort of way.) So this is a CFJ to say “yes, that’s the correct interpretation”.

As usual, if you disagree that this is the correct intepretation, the best move is to counter-CFJ to enforce your own interpretation; either way we want this rule to unambiguously say what the majority of people think it (ambiguously) says.

By the way, thanks to the BlogNomic Dice Roller for expressing Richardo’s likely feelings on the Crypt in such an apt and succinct way.

Call for Judgment: Bouncing doesn’t work like that

Failed by Call for Judgment: Basic Bounce. Josh

Adminned at 07 Jul 2021 08:10:00 UTC

Undo any actions which Enthralled the Vampire Lord Clucky. Undo the Vampire Lord Clucky’s creation of a Denizen in the Shattered Staircase. (“Undoing an action” here includes undoing both the effects of the action, and the spending of the cost paid to perform that action. If the action was never performed in the first place, undoing it does nothing.)

Undo any Power Actions taken since the posting of this CFJ by each Vampire Lord for whom this CFJ would otherwise attempt to set their Puissance to a negative number.

Uphold Richardo von Nestor’s resolution of the most recent “Enter the Crypt” action at the time of posting of this CFJ (“Richardo’s Twelfth Expedition”), then subtract 1 Puissance from every Vampire Lord (including idle Vampire Lords) who was not idle when this CFJ was posted, and 1 additional Puissance from each Vampire Lord who had a Sigil in the Library of Souls at the time of that action (i.e. the Vampire Lords named pokes, Phil, ais523, Kevan, Jason, Jumble, lemonfanta, Bucky, Chiiika, and Clucky).

Uphold Richardo von Nestor’s most recent (at the time of posting of this CFJ) Puissance calculation from the first of his “Enter the Crypt” actions which lead to the posting of a story post “Richardo’s Ninth Expedition”.

The “Richardo von Nestor is moved back to his previous location.” feature doesn’t actually trigger the effects of the room that Richardo is moved to (because the effects happen based on “that room”, referring to the room that Richardo most recently randomly chose to move to, but movement is based on “his current room”, which is the room he would have been moved into by the feature). But Josh doesn’t seem to have realised that.

This affects two expeditions: the ninth and the twelfth, which were both calculated incorrectly because Josh applied the effect of the Library of Souls one extra time. The ninth is too far back to unravel at this point, so uphold it. The twelfth, though, is recent enough that we can wind it back; the only action that was affected as a result was Clucky’s, and we can undo that one. (Note that we have to be careful identifying the ninth expedition, as the tenth expedition was accidentally originally posted with a title saying it was the ninth.)

Note: an alternative possible resolution would be to change the “go back to where you came from” effect to do what it would be expected to do based on its name. That would also need a CFJ, though, to uphold the resolutions of the ninth and twelfth expeditions (in addition to a ruleset amendment to make it do what we want it to), and I prefer to fix things in a way that gets us as close to the actual gamestate as possible. (If people would prefer that fix, I’ll let them make their own counter-CFJ for it.)

the shorter half of this proposal is the more important half: w/ temporary effects & directional blocking in play, i feel like the “moved back to his previous location” feature is too cheap while doing too much. & the second half is just some bonus nitpicking :u

Story Post: Richardo’s Twelfth Expedition

After his previous expedition, Richardo needed to heal both his wounds and his pride. Eventually, however, the darkness from the crypt once more impelled him into action.

In contrast, this expedition was much less humiliating, for being much more boring: Richardo moved from the Crypt Entrance to the Library of Souls. From the Library he tried to move into the Forgotten Corridor, but the enchantment on that room prevented him from progressing, so he moved back into the Library. From the Library he returned to the Crypt Entrance.

From the Crypt Entrance he moved north to Room BA, and, remembering the traumas of the Broken Stage, decided to move west instead.

However, because some time had passed, he had forgotten that the room to the west was the literal hell of the Burning Stream. He tried to withdraw, but a spit of flame caught his clothing, setting him alight and causing him Grievous Injury. Jumble’s glyph responded, feeding the Vampire Lord with a surge of power.

Richardo also has a integer value called Sneak. If Richardo’s Sneak is higher than 0, he is considered to be Sneaky. When Richardo enters the Crypt his Sneak starts at 1.

In Denizen Encounters, after “When Richardo Encounters a Denizen, he first determines if the Denizen is immediately slain by an item Richardo possess, “

In “Richrado’s Journey” add a step right before “If his Energy is greater than 0, carry out another Move.” which says

A Vampire Lord cannot perform this action on more than one occasion between each Enter the Crypt action, except that performing multiple instances of this action in a single wiki update counts as a single performance of the action for the purpose of this sentence.

In the rule “Sepulchres”, change

This action can only be performed on a room that is diagonally adjacent to a room reachable from Richardo’s starting location by a path of orthogonally connected Lit rooms.

to

This action can only be performed on a room that is diagonally adjacent to a room reachable from Richardo’s starting location by a path of orthogonally connected Lit rooms, and that does not have the Feature “Richardo encounters Dracula’s Sepulchre”.

if the proposal “Be Very Afraid” failed, or

This action can only be performed on a room that is diagonally adjacent to a room reachable from Richardo’s starting location by a path of orthogonally connected Lit rooms, and that does not have the Feature “Richardo encounters Dracula’s Sepulchre” nor “This room is Daunting”.

if the proposal “Be Very Afraid” was enacted.

If any Vampire Lord’s Sepulchre has the “Richardo encounters Dracula’s Sepulchre” or “This room is Daunting” effect, set that Vampire Lord to have no Sepulchre (without collapsing their Sepulchre).

Rewrite the dynastic rule “Victory” as follows:

No Vampire Lord may have the name Dracula. Upon Dracula being Dusted (as described in the rule “Ritual Chambers”), then the Vampire Lord with the most Blood Mana Crystals (tiebroken by most Influence, and tiebroken by most Puissance if there’s still a tie) at that time achieves victory.

Fixing a few loopholes / possible scams / possible holdups to gameplay in the recent (and one not-so-recent) proposals:

  • Press-Fanging’s effect is one that players are likely to fight over, in very slow motion; require people to do all their Coercion at once, so as to avoid slow-motion fighting over wiki updates meaning we never get anything done;
  • If a room becomes Daunting, it naturally becomes a very-well-defended place for a Sepulchre; prevent players taking advantage of that (and punish anyone who tried to exploit the loophole before this proposal got enacted);
  • A player can get rid of Dracula semi-permanently by sharing his Sepulchre and then idling, which probably wasn’t intended gameplay; ban players from creating a Sepulchre in the same room as Dracula’s Sepulchre.
  • The victory condition technically didn’t work at all (because Dracula isn’t around at the point in time at which he gets dusted), and was also missing a tiebreak; this fixes it to actually work, and adds a tiebreak for a victory condition that’s fairly likely to be tied.

Coercing a Denizen is a Power Action with a cost of 2 plus the Cunning of the chosen Crypt Denizen. The Vampire Lord carrying it out may select a Crypt Denizen and set its Sycophancy to their own name if it is currently “None” or set it to “None” if it is another Vampire Lord’s name.

Add the following bullet to the list in the sub-rule “Denizen Characteristics”, maintaining alphabetical order:

* Loyal: When a loyal Denizen is Coerced, instead of having its Sycophancy changed, it loses the trait Loyal. (+1)

And before “He retreats; reset all of his gamestate variables to null values.”, add two bullets at the same level as it:-

* Remove the “This room is Daunting.” Feature from all rooms that Richardo entered during this Enter the Crypt action
* If Richardo’s current room contains a Threat or Denizen, add the “This room is Daunting.” Threat to it.

If “A Nudge is All it Takes” was enacted, revert its effects.

Replace the second paragraph of “Treasure” with:

An average treasure chest will contain one item from the average treasures list. A fine treasure chest will contain one item from the fine treasures list and one item from the average treasures list. The contents of a chest are determined when it is opened, in one of two ways:

  • As a Power Action with a cost of 2, a Vampire Lord may add a set of predetermined items to a single treasure chest, which is any list of items possible for that type of chest, by appending the names of the items to be contained in that chest to its entry in the room’s effects in square brackets. If a chest has one or more sets of predetermined items, then the contents of the chest are one such set, selected secretly randomly. The selected set of predetermined items (including the square brackets) is then deleted from the chest’s entry in the room effects.
  • If a chest has no sets of predetermined items, then the contents of the chest are chosen secretly at random from all values legal for that type of chest. A type of Treasure may have a weight (which is 1 if not otherwise specified); these weights are used to weight the secret random selection (e.g. an item with a weight of 2 would be twice as likely to be selected as an item with a weight of 1).

Add the following to the list of Average Treasures:

  • Northbound Compass (weight ¼): when selecting a room to move to, if moving north is a valid option, Richardo selects that option and ceases to hold this item
  • Eastbound Compass (weight ¼): when selecting a room to move to, if moving east is a valid option, Richardo selects that option and ceases to hold this item
  • Southbound Compass (weight ¼): when selecting a room to move to, if moving south is a valid option, Richardo selects that option and ceases to hold this item
  • Westbound Compass (weight ¼): when selecting a room to move to, if moving west is a valid option, Richardo selects that option and ceases to hold this item

If two or more Compasses attempt to force Richardo in two or more different possible directions in a single selection of a room to move to, then none of those Compass effects are applied when making that selection.

In the definition of the Treasure “Bandages”, change “is Grievously Injured” to “would be Grievously Injured”.

Move Roc’s Feather to the list of Fine treasures, and Watchful Saint Figurine to the list of Average treasures.

If a chest has a set of predetermined items that would be illegal for that type of chest, delete it from its entry in the room effects.

A fixed version of “A Nudge is All it Takes”. Also does some Treasure cleanup while we’re here.

Also, I only just noticed that Josh swapped the Roc Feather and Watchful Saint Figurine between the Average and Fine treasures list when doing the big cleanup proposal, which seems somewhat against the spirit of a cleanup proposal (OK, so it’s moving dynastic rule text around, but those sections had consequences!), so I’m swapping them back. Normally I can trust Emperors not to attempt scams like that, but maybe not in this case? A side effect of this is that the chest in the Ancient Vault now contains two Fine items, which it’s unclear how to resolve; swapping them back makes this chest legal, and the proposal removes any now-illegal combinations that might have been created while it was pending (so don’t create them, folks).

Reword the Appendix description of flavour text to read as follows:

If a part of the ruleset or gamestate is defined as being “flavour text”, it retains its context, but is not considered to have any meaning beyond being a string of characters. Vampire Lords are not required to obey flavour text and may not perform any action defined by it, and any statements that flavour text makes about gamestate are ignored.

At the moment, only ruletext can be flavour text. We have historically frequently used “flavour text” in an attempt to render the free-text naming or description of gamestate variables inert, which in retrospect doesn’t work as intended. This just intends to minimally extend flavour text provisions to gamestate text.

Add the following after the second paragraph of “Treasures”

Some Treasures have a group. When the contents of a chest are randomly determined, Richardo first randomly selects a group which is available for that type of treasure or an available treasure without a group (with all groups and groupless treasures being equally likely to be selected). Then, if he selected a group, he randomly selects an item from that group.

Add the following to the list of Average Treasures

Northbound Compass (Group: Compass): If the room to the North is Lit and the North Exit of Richardo’s current room is not Blocked, change Ricardo’s room to be the one to the North and he then ceases to hold this item
Eastbound Compass (Group: Compass): If the room to the East is Lit and the North Exit of Richardo’s current room is not Blocked, change Ricardo’s room to be the one to the East and he then ceases to hold this item
Southbound Compass (Group: Compass): If the room to the South is Lit and the North Exit of Richardo’s current room is not Blocked, change Ricardo’s room to be the one to the South and he then ceases to hold this item
Westbound Compass (Group: Compass): If the room to the West is Lit and the North Exit of Richardo’s current room is not Blocked, change Ricardo’s room to be the one to the West and he then ceases to hold this item

Story Post: Richardo’s Eleventh Expedition

Richardo stalks his way through the broken pews of the Cathedral, determined to once again engage with the evil forces that lurk beneath. The blood magic that has perverted the holy ground of the temple trickles a small amount of power to most Vampire Lords.

Once over the threshold of the crypt, Richardo immediately resolved to move North.

In Room BA, Richardo runs through the typically spotless room, but is arrested by the realisation that a new door has appeared in the east wall. After a quick anxious look, he decides to check it out.

He makes his way cautiously into the Broken Stage. A shattered music hall, this room is dominated by vast stone statues of long-forgotten musicians. Richardo edges through the room, stepping over broken ceiling beams and hunks of masonry. As he approaches the stage, a section of floor abruptly gives out, plunging Richardo into an undercroft - and viciously impaling him on a broken, jagged splint of torn metal. The injury is Grievous but Richardo manages to pull himself off the the shard of metal and resolves to continue, his energy not yet depleted. Laboriously, he pulls himself out of the broken hole, overlooked by the stern statues of the ancient musicians - one of which suddenly, abruptly moves, swinging a huge rock fist down on him as he is vulnerable. Unable to defend himself, Richardo catches the blow fully on his chest, smashing him back down into the cellar and dealing another four Slight Injuries in the process. He lays on his back for a full minute and then, with a visible “eff this”, decides to call it a day and retreats to recover from his wounds.

Proposal: AB+ Testing

Passes 8-0. Enacted by Brendan.

Adminned at 04 Jul 2021 14:55:54 UTC

Delete the sentence “Spending the cost and performing of the action is considered to be an atomic action” from the first paragraph of the rule “Vampire Lords” and then append to that paragraph the following:

Mysterious Actions may be performed at any time but require that their Cost be spent from the Puissance of the Vampire Lord carrying it out.

Reword the sentence that reads “While a Vampire Lord is Bloodthirsty, they may not perform any Power Actions except Blood Frenzy.” to:

While a Vampire Lord is Bloodthirsty, they may not perform any Power Actions or Mysterious Actions except Blood Frenzy.

So does everyone hate the idea of dynastic actions that don’t bump the clock, or was it in concert with pre-equipping Richardo?

Proposal: Tinkering

Self-killed. Josh

Adminned at 04 Jul 2021 10:56:16 UTC

In the rule The Crypt of Dracula, after the sentence “and any number of Features as its Effect (or “none” if it has no Features), in an order of the Vampire Lord’s choosing”, add “but with no more than one Feature from the Opportunities list”.

Set the cost of Richardo Finds an Ingress to +1.

Move “If Richardo is not Enriched, he gains 1 Energy for each Active Sigil engraved here and becomes Enriched (+1)” from the Glyphs and Sigils list to the Opportunities list.

Add the following to the Opportunities list:

Richardo finds a Statue to the Goddess (+1)

Add a new rule called Gifts of the Goddess:

Richardo’s Whip and Shield are gifts from the Goddess, and can be empowered at Statues to the Goddess.

When a room is Pacified, if it contained the ‘Richardo finds a Statue to the Goddess’ effect, Richardo secretly randomly selects whether to pray for Power or Alacrity (if he already has prayed for one of these in this Enter the Crypt action, he automatically selects the other; if he has already prayed for both then this rule has no further effect during this Enter the Crypt action”. If he prayed for Power then his Whip is blessed and he becomes Powerful; if he prayed for Alacrity then his Shield is empowered and be becomes Quick.

Whenever Richardo Encounters a Denizen, if he is Powerful, then he disregards the Denizen’s Brutality when comparing his dice results to the Denizen’s statistics. Whenever Richardo Encounters a Denizen, if he is Quick, then he disregards the Denizen’s Cunning when comparing his dice results to the Denizen’s statistics.

Proposal: [Appendix] Fixing a bug from several dynasties ago

Reached quorum, 8-0. Josh

Adminned at 03 Jul 2021 18:39:04 UTC

In the Appendix rule “Official Posts”, to the end of the first paragraph, append:

Dynastic rules cannot define posts in the “Call for Judgement” category to be a type of official post other than a Call for Judgement, and this restriction cannot be overridden by dynastic rules.

This proposal was originally something entirely different, but lemonfanta pointed out that it wouldn’t do anything, so in order to do something with the slot, I edited it into a core rules fix – several dynasties ago, the game was almost permanently broken due to a dynastic rule that made all posts into a dynastic type of Official Post, which had the side effect that all proposals and CFJs were illegal (due to being two sorts of official post at the same time). We found a loophole to recover then, but it relied on the wording of the dynastic rule in question; this fix should help prevent the issue reocurring in the future.

An offer

Anyone interested in the new trading mechanics?

I’m looking to buy a Favour from Jumble or Chiiika or both, and would be willing to offer the inclusion of their names on my Glyph on the Cliff Edge in return.

Proposal: Clean Sweep

Timed out and enacted, 8-0. Josh

Adminned at 03 Jul 2021 18:38:15 UTC

Replace the first paragraph of “Cleanup Proposals” with:-

A proposal from Richardo von Nestor is a Cleanup Proposal if it has the “[Cleanup]” tag. A Cleanup Proposal should focus on improving the structure and formatting of the ruleset without altering its meaning.

Per comments on Senior Deckchair Organisation Officer, removing the legal restriction on the content of a Cleanup Proposal and just making anything with the Tag valid.

Call for Judgment: Post hoc

Enacted popular, 7-0. Josh

Uphold Proposal: [Cleanup] Senior Deckchair Organisation Officer’s status as a Cleanup proposal, if it is not one.

In the rule Cleanup Proposals, after the text “if it consists entirely of moving text between dynastic rules”, add “(adding or removing rules as needed, and updating ruletext that refers to specific rules by name accordingly)”.

Proposal: [Cleanup] Senior Deckchair Organisation Officer

Timed out 5-0, and I suppose it’s only fair that I get to enact this mess. Josh

Rewrite the dynastic ruleset to match this document.

For each Proposal which was pending when this proposal was posted that has since been enacted, re-enact the changes that it made to the ruleset, with the following caveats:
* If one of those proposals is Proposal: Shadowy Benefactors, add the rule “Remote Actions” that it creates after the sub-rule Power Actions instead of Lair Actions;
* If one of those proposals is Proposal: Temporary Tattoos, make the necessary changes to the rule Power Actions instead of Lair Actions.

The oldest currently pending proposal is Proposal: Tepesh Mode.

I’ve taken a small liberty, here: I’ve interpreted “if it consists entirely of moving text between dynastic rules” to entitle me to make new dynastic rules and rename existing ones as needed. It hasn’t required any references to be updated in any ruletext but my liberty should really either be made fully legal (and thus some precautions put in around ruletext references) or voted down (i.e. this proposal should fail).

Proposal: Temporary Tattoos

Add the following to the end of the rule Lair Actions:

Enchantment is a Power Action with a cost of 1 that each Vampire Lord may perform no more than once between each Enter the Crypt action. When a Vampire Lord carries out an Enchantment they may spend the Shadow cost of a Feature and add that Feature to a single room as a temporary effect.

In the same rule, add the following to the end of the first paragraph:

An effect contained within curly braces (for example, {Richardo von Nestor is Lightly Injured}) is a temporary effect; it applies as if it were any other effect but must be removed whenever the Crypt Settles.

Story Post: Richardo’s Tenth Expedition

The eerie sounds of demented organ playing shadow Richardo through the streets as he makes his way through the moonlit city from his family manse to the Cathedral once more. As the Crypt has gotten stronger, so has he; his energy is increased as he moves through the cathedral.

He enters through the Crypt Entrance and the magic seal activates, trickling power into the shells of all Vampire Lords and influence into the Sepulchres of ais523, Brendan, Chiiika, Jumble and lemonfanta. Richardo looks to the South.

In the Entrance Vestibule, Richardo as usual finds nothing but cobwebs moving silently as candles gutter as the stale air moves through the corridors of the crypt. He continues south.

In the Shattered Stairway, Richardo finds himself menaced by a Laughing Gargoyle. The Gargoyle swoops at him but Richardo deflects its attack with his shield and then cracks back with his whip. The Gargoyle is evasive so dances out of the way of the whip-strike before fleeing back towards the Entrance Vestibule. Richardo heads down the stairway and then exits to the east. The sigils of various Vampire Lords here respond to the combat.

The Gravity Room continues to work its distortive magic on Richardo’s body. As he enters, he finds a fine chest suspended in a well of weird forces. Struggling to find his bearings as he is pulled helplessly towards the south exit, he grabs hold of the chest, springing it open. Inside he finds a Secret Passage Map and a Watchful Saint Figurine. He immediately uses both, becoming Perceptive and learning of a hidden gravity well. He swims towards it and is sucked into a sluice of eldritch forces that pulls him into an alternate dimension. As he leaves, the magic of the Gravity Room disperses power into the sigils of various Vampire Lords that are engraved into adjacent rooms.

The dimensional passage spits him out in the Epistolary Oubliette. This room has been undisturbed by human feet for centuries, but the dark forces of mail and parcel delivery have continued to use it for their own wicked ends; piles of greying, crinkled, but otherwise neatly sorted letters and packages. It is guarded by three denizens, who regard him with red eyes and serrated teeth. Richardo sighs wearily and hefts his whip. The Mail Devil, Courier Rat and Messenger Bat are designed for light administration, not combat, and Richardo makes short work of them; he senses that their blood is nutritious but sadly they are too shrivelled and puny to have much restorative value. Finally, under a pile of packages, he spots a familiar emblem: the Sepulchre of the Vampire Lord Brendan, previously encountered in the Pillar Room. Lacking the means to end the wretched creature’s unlife, he contents himself to set the room ablaze; all the paper held in this room means that the fire catches quick. He makes a hasty retreat to the west.

In the next room he encounters something even he could not have expected; a vast expanse of bloody matted fur. Two gigantic rabbit feet are here, clearly dismembered from an impossibly vast rabbit. It appears not to be hostile so Richardo exits to the north. The blood enchantment placed upon the rabbit disperses power to all of the Vampire Lords.

In the room to the north, the giant rabbit charnel house continues - chunks of the mangled torso of the giant rabbit dot the bloodsoaked room. Richardo continues to the north while the rabbit curse continues to feed the Vampire Lords.

In the next room, with a horrific predictability, Richardo finds the head of the giant rabbit mounted on a stake, its vacant eyes staring at him glassily. In a corner he also spots a large basked full of broken chocolate eggs. The rabbit’s vast floppy hat has been animated by the magic of a Vampire Lord, but Richardo makes short work of it. Richardo shakes his head at the excess of Vampire Lords before continuing to the north, as the Vampire Lords receive another dollop of grotesque power.

In the Subterranean Hothouse, Richardo finds himself in a bizarre room, dark and damp with thick, heavy air. In this room, a large, coiling vine has adapted to fill the space and thrive, its extremities thrashing through the muggy air as if driven by a conscious intelligence. Richardo takes a few steps into the room before the thorny liana detects his presence, but then it swoops its tendrils around, seeking to excircle him and tear him apart with its razor-sharp spikes. Fortunately the Watchful Saint of the figurine has blessed Richardo with perception, so he rolls out of the way of the vines; however, the plant has moved some of its thicker trunks in front of the door, blocking off the only visible means of escape. Richardo curses; despite not being tired he knows that there is no escape, so he is forced to retreat. He holds aloft his shield, utters the magical passphrase, and is violently yanked from the crypt back to the chapel at the von Nestor family manor, around a mile south of the city.
