Proposal: Un-OP-ing the Goalie

In Rule 2.2.1 “Kicking the Ball” replace all instances of “DICE3” with “DICE12.” In the same rule, change all instances of the number “2” to the number “11” and all instances of the number “3” to the number “12.”

In Rule 2.10 “The Method of Scoring:

Replace all instances of “DICE10” with “DICE15.” Replace all instances of “DICE40” with “DICE32.”

After “Afterwards, the Ball is removed from the Shooting Player” add the phrase

and the Shooting post is considered closed.

The game isn’t interesting if scoring happens once in a blue moon. Using the calculator so nicely provided by Eritivus, I found numbers that hopefully will be more balanced. The final change isn’t really related, but I wanted to put it in to make the rules as clear as possible.

I made a calculator tool which shows the probability of scoring under the current rules, given the number of (rolling) assisters and defenders, and the dice sizes (which can be tweaked away from their current values).

It constantly simulates score attempts in the background since I didn’t think I could figure out the math.

This was mostly a pedagogical exercise for myself.

Tiki-Taka Football

In Rule 2.18.1, add the following to the end of that Rule:-

Whenever this Challenge is Active and a player kicks the ball and rolls a 3 in the same GNDT comment, they must not increase their Score by 1 as they normally would due to the fact that they Kicked the ball

In Rule 2.2.1 Kicking the Ball, replace “If a Player has the Ball, they may Kick the Ball by making a GNDT comment naming a Player (other than themselves, and who has a Position) to be a target Player and rolling DICE3.” with:-

If a Player has the Ball, they may Kick the Ball by making a GNDT comment naming a Player (other than themselves, and who has a Position) to be a target Player and rolling DICE3 in the same GNDT comment.

Makes it so that players don’t get an extra kick for kicking the ball out of play and then getting it back.

I’m not sure that this randomness (1/3 chance of simply resetting the Assists, 1/3 chance of going to a player who might be inactive) is very interesting in practice. Deciding who to kick to is a significant decision even without it.

Create a new Game Document, entitled “Challenges.”  Add one Challenge entitled “Passing”:

While this Challenge is Active, the number of times a player has Kicked the Ball is tracked in the GNDT. The first Player to have Kicked the Ball 5 times wins this Challenge.

Add one Challenge entitled “Scoring”:

While this Challenge is Active, the number of Scores a Player has is written as X(+Y), where X is the number of Scores the Player had before the Challenge was Active (their Previous Score) and Y is the number of Scores the Player achieved after it became Active (their Improved Score). The first player to have Scored 2 times since this Challenge became Active wins this Challenge. After this Challenge is finished, each player adds their Previous Score and their Improved Score to get their Score.

Enact a new rule, Challenges :-

A Challenge is a task that can be completed within the game that is detailed in the “Challenges” section of the BlogNomic wiki. By default, all Challenges are Inactive. Any player may attempt to create a new Challenge by making a Proposal titled “New Challenge—” followed by the name of the Challenge.

As a daily action, the Coach can make a Man of the Match post by making a post titled Man of the Match and Activating a Challenge within the body of the post. If and when a Player wins that Challenge, the Coach must make exactly one Victory post for that Challenge titled Man of the Match: Victory with the name of a player who has completed the Challenge in the body of that post. The player must be the first player to have completed the task. Then, any Admin may update the GNDT “Shirt” field of that player so that said player has an M in their Shirt field.

In Rule 2.2.1 “Kicking the Ball,” add

The number of times a Player has Kicked the Ball is tracked in the GNDT but remains at 0 unless a Challenge that includes the phrase “While this Challenge is Active, the number of times a player has Kicked the Ball is tracked in the GNDT” is active.

Enact a new rule, Man of the Match:-

As a daily action, the Coach can make a Man of the Match post by making a post titled Man of the Match and declaring a challenge by posting the description of a certain task that can be completed within the game in the body of that post. Then, at any time, for each Man of the Match post the Coach can make exactly one Victory post titled Man of the Match: Victory with the name of a player who has completed the task in the body of that post. The player must be the first player to have completed the task, and if any player does complete such a task, the Coach must make a corresponding Victory post. Then, any Admin may update the GNDT “Shirt” field of that player so that said player has an M in his/her Shirt field.

Going for one of those mechanics that is hard to explain in formal language. I think it makes sense though.

In Rule 2.4 “The Player’s Equipment”, change “A Player wearing a number 1 Shirt is known as a Goalkeeper.” to:

For the purposes of Dynastic rules, the Coach is not considered a Player.

If no such rule exists, instead create it with a body consisting of the above quoted text.

Might be best to settle whether the Coach is on the field or not before it matters. Also, I need to Propose more.

A Player wearing a number 1 Shirt is known as a Goalkeeper.

Create an empty dynastic rule called “The Field of Play” as Rule 2.1, move “The Ball” to be Rule 2.2, then add the following empty dynastic rules, renumbering any other existing dynastic rules as 2.18 onwards:-

2.6: The Assistant Referees
2.7: The Duration of the Match
2.8: The Start and Restart of Play
2.9: Ball In and Out of Play
2.10: The Method of Scoring
2.11: Offside
2.12: Fouls and Misconduct
2.13: Free Kicks (direct and indirect)
2.14: The Penalty Kick
2.15: The Throw-in
2.16: The Goal Kick
2.17: Corner Kick

If a rule called “Scrimmages” exists, repeal it and add the text that it contained to the rule “The Start and Restart of Play”.

If rules called “Passing” and “Scoring” exist, repeal them both and add the text that they contained to the rule “The Method of Scoring”.

Just learned for the first time that association football has seventeen Laws of the Game - coincidentally including one called “The Ball” - and this seemed like it might be an amusing framework to be constrained by.

Add a new rule, “Passing”:

Any kick is known as a Pass. The number of successful Passes each Player has made is tracked in the GNDT.

Add a new rule, “Scoring”:

The number of Goals a player has made is tracked in the GNDT.  A player may not score a Goal without having at least ten passes.

Each time a player scores a Goal, that player’s Passes are reset to zero and the ball is removed from any player’s possession for at least 1 hour.

A player with at least seven Goals has achieved victory.

I’m making life easier for people who want to make future proposals. Also, win conditions are always fun.

Enact a new rule, “Scrimmages”:-

As a weekly action, the Coach may Plan a Scrimmage by giving the scrimmage a title, making a post, called a Scrimmage Post, to that effect that contains the scrimmage’s title, updating the GNDT so that no-one has a ball, and stating within the Scrimmage Post the result, X, of a DICE25 rolled using the GNDT. X hours after the last hour of the day after the day the Coach makes such a post, the scrimmage starts. No player may gain the ball in the duration after a Scrimmage Post but before the corresponding scrimmage starts.

Enact a new rule, “The Ball”:-

One Player may have the Ball; the Player who has the Ball is tracked in the GNDT field “Ball”, with a single “O”.

If a Player has the Ball, they may transfer it to any other Player by updating the GNDT; this action is known as a “Kick”.

If no Player has the Ball, any Player may gain the Ball for themselves by updating the GNDT to that effect.

The ambiguous soccer tournament is coming up and you boys are in no condition to win a game, let alone the Championship. Here’s the way it’s going to work around here from now on; toes on the line with shirts tucked in at 2:25, blah blah…

I guess what I’ve got to say is this: I’m a winner, and their aint no room on this team for losers. I hope for your sake that there’s room on this team for YOU.

Change Seller/Sellers to Player/Players. Change Broker to Coach. Repeal all Dynastic rules.

Woo-hoo! Goals and stuff!
