Proposal: Banana-Flavored Misjudgment

Timed out (5-2)
Enacted by Hix

Adminned at 03 Oct 2006 08:33:21 UTC

Rename the rule “Where You Be At” to “A Lesson in Rule Text” and rewrite it as follows:

Each Vegetable has five dimensions, the sum of which represent a location on the farm. The dimensions are Moisture, Temperature, Brightness, Weirdness, and Comfortableness. The values for each are the following:

Moisture
  • Wet
  • Dry
Temperature
  • Hot
  • Cool
Brightness
  • Light
  • Dark
Weirdness
  • Normal
  • Strange
Comfortableness
  • Luxurious
  • Painful

Each of the thirty-two combinations of these values denotes a unique Dimensional Location, or DL, which is tracked in the GNDT under the single column “DL”. Each DL is a coordinate in these five dimensions that represents a location on the farm, which can be specified as an ordered five-tuple, (Moisture, Temperature, Brightness, Weirdness, Comfortableness)

New Vegetables start with eir DL set to The Garden.

Each Vegetable may often change eir DL to any defined DL if that change requires that two or less Dimensions are changed.
===DL’s===

All defined DL’s are described in this subrule, with any effects in parentheses. The Top Banana may edit this list of DL’s as e sees fit. All hail the Top Banana, supreme lord of the ruleset! Banana-ho-ho! Salute!

* (Dry, Hot, Light, Normal, Luxurious): The Garden (New Vegetables take this DL. This DL is also where Farmer Brown selects vegetables to be eaten.)
* (Dry, Cool, Dark, Normal, Luxurious): The Top Banana’s Chamber (If a Vegetable who is not the Top Banana has taken this DL, and the Top Banana notices this within the next 24 hours, the Top Banana may publicly humiliate the other Vegetable on the main page.)

When a new DL is created, it shall be added as a possible GNDT value under the column “DL”.

Replace the five columns Moisture, Temperature, Brightness, Strangeness, and Comfortableness in the GNDT with a single column entitled “DL”, with the values “Garden” and “TopBananaChamber”.

Set each Vegetable’s DL to “Garden”.

Pseudo-proposal: Adopt Me!

If the Proposal titled “Proposal: [Z/2Z]^5” failed, this Proposal does nothing.

Add “Charmed” to the list of possible Strangeness values in the rule entitled “Where You Be At”

Proposal: Little Fixes

Self-killed
Failed by Hix

Adminned at 03 Oct 2006 08:32:00 UTC

Addressing some concerns that have been made.

Section 1. If the Proposal titled “Proposal: [Z/2Z]^5” failed, this section of this Proposal does nothing. Change the sentence “The Top Banana may edit this subrule as e sees fit.” to

Often the Top Banana may edit this subrule by adding or removing locations from the list. The addition or removal of any locations in this way may not result in the immediate victory of any player.

The meaning of “immediate” could be resolved by CfJ if the need ever arises.

Section 2. If the Proposal titled “Proposal: Cultural Influence” failed, this section of this Proposal does nothing. Change the sentence “If the DICE5 outcome is a 5, the Vegetable must change eir own Inclination to match the Targeted Vegetable’s Inclination, and subtract 1 from eir own Tastiness.” to

If the DICE5 outcome is a 5, the Vegetable must change eir own Inclination to match the Targeted Vegetable’s Inclination, and subtract 1 from eir own Tastiness, this taking precedence over any rule stating that the Vegetable may not change eir own Inclination.

I don’t usually like bundling changes in this way, but each change is so small they hardly warrant two seperate proposals.

Proposal: Water the Veggies

Timed out (4-2)
Enacted by Hix

Adminned at 03 Oct 2006 08:29:35 UTC

Add a subrule of “Farmer Brown” called “Watering”

Often, provided it has been at least five hours since the last harvest, a vegetable may choose to either water emself or water a vegetable with a lower net worth than emself by making a comment to the GNDT saying “Water XXXX: HEALTH DICE4 TASTE DICE4” where XXXX is the targeted vegetable’s name.

For the first dice, if the roll is a one, decrease the targeted vegetable’s healthfulness by one. If the roll is a two or three, do noting. If the roll is a four, increase the targeted vegetable’s healthfulness by one, provided in each case that eir healthfulness does not go above or beyond the current limits placed on healthfulness.

For the second dice, if the roll is a one, decrease the targeted vegetable’s tastiness by one. If the roll is a two or three, do noting. If the roll is a four, increase the targeted vegetable’s tastiness by one, provided in each case that eir tastiness does not go above or beyond the current limits placed on tastiness.

Proposal: Oh. This is a problem.

Vetoed. -Elias IX.

Adminned at 30 Sep 2006 20:44:43 UTC

Create a GNDT column entitled “Net Worth”.

Proposal: Cultural Influence

5-1, timed out. Enacted by Elias IX.

Adminned at 30 Sep 2006 20:37:43 UTC

Append the following to “Politics in the Garden”:

Often, a Vegetable may make an attempt to change the Inclination of another Vegetable, provided the targeted Vegetable has a lower Tastiness.  A Vegetable does this by posting the following in the GNDT: “Influencing XXXX: DICE5”, where XXXX is the targeted Vegetable’s name.  If the DICE5 outcome is a 1 or 2, the Vegetable may now change the Targeted Vegetable’s Inclination to whatever legal value e wishes.  In addition, e may add 1 to eir own Tastiness.  If the DICE5 outcome is a 5, the Vegetable must change eir own Inclination to match the Targeted Vegetable’s Inclination, and subtract 1 from eir own Tastiness.

Proposal: [Z/2Z]^5

Times out at 5-3. Enacted by Elias IX.

Adminned at 30 Sep 2006 18:30:43 UTC

Add a rule entitled “Where You Be At”

Each Vegetable has five dimensions, the sum of which represent a location on the farm. The dimensions are Moisture, Temperature, Brightness, Weirdness, and Comfortableness. Each dimension is tracked in the GNDT under a separate column. The values for each are the following:

Moisture
  • Wet
  • Dry
Temperature
  • Hot
  • Cool
Brightness
  • Light
  • Dark
Weirdness
  • Normal
  • Strange
Comfortableness
  • Luxurious
  • Painful

Each of the thirty-two combinations of these values denotes a unique Dimensional Location, or DL. Each DL is a coordinate in these five dimensions that represents a location on the farm, which can be specified as an ordered five-tuple, (Moisture, Temperature, Brightness, Weirdness, Comfortableness)

New Vegetables start with eir Moisture set to Dry, eir Temperature set to Hot, eir Brightness to Light, eir Weirdness set to Normal, and eir Comfortableness set to Luxurious, that is, (Dry, Hot, Light, Normal, Luxurious).

Each Vegetable may often change up to two of eir dimensions.
===Locations===

Special DLs are described in this subrule, with any effects in parentheses. The Top Banana may edit this subrule as e sees fit.

Create GNDT colums of Moisture, Temperature, Brightness, Weirdness, and Comfortableness with their respective values. Set all Vegetables to (Dry, Hot, Light, Normal, Luxurious).

Change the subrule “The Tasty List” from

The Tasty List is an ordered list of all Vegetables with positive Tastiness. Each such Vegetable appears on the Tasty List a number of times equal to eir Tastiness, and the order of the Vegetables appearing on the Tasty List is the same as their GNDT order. For example, if Vegetables Q, L, M, and G appear in that order in the GNDT, with Tastiness values of 2, 0, 5, and 1 (respectively), then the Tasty List is “Q Q M M M M M G” Farmer Brown keeps the Tasty List attatched via magnets to his refrigerator at all times.

to

The Tasty List is an ordered list of all Vegetables with positive Tastiness that have eir DL set to the Garden. Each such Vegetable appears on the Tasty List a number of times equal to eir Tastiness, and the order of the Vegetables appearing on the Tasty List is the same as their GNDT order. For example, let Vegetables A, B, C, D, E, and F be in the GNDT and have Tastiness of 5, 2, 1, 0, 7, and 3 respectively. If Vegetables C and E are the only Vegetables not in the Garden, then the Tasty List is “A A A A A B B F F F”

Farmer Brown keeps the Tasty List attatched via magnets to his refrigerator at all times.

My ideas: That special locations will soon allow special enhancements, or other effects, or fun games that Vegetables can play. While Vegetables are trying to get these Enhancements, it would be easier if Vegetables didn’t have to worry about being consumed, and maybe losing their Enhancements, so that’s why Vegetables can only be consumed in the Garden.

Proposal: Less ambiguity, more Harvest.

8-1, reaches quorum. Encated by Elias IX.

Adminned at 30 Sep 2006 12:51:38 UTC

In the Rule “The Harvest”, replace “If no Vegetable has done so that day or within the previous 6 hours” with “If no Vegetable has done so within the previous 10 hours”.

Question on “The Harvest”

The first line of “THe Harvest” says

“If no Vegetable has done so that day or within the previous 6 hours…”

Hix recently reverted two Harvests claiming Harvest has already happened today. Both times it happened after the six hours.

The way I read the statement was “(If no V has done so that day)F or (within the previous 6 hours)T” and thus the two harvests should have happened.
Hix apparently read the “or” as an “and”, thus saying the harvest shouldn’t have happened.

I do not know for sure how CoJ’s work yet to know how to fix this. Can someone else post a CoJ to try and clear the rule up?

Proposal: Initialization

7-0 is quorum. -Elias IX

Adminned at 30 Sep 2006 12:44:48 UTC

If “Proposal: Green makes the world go round” has been Enacted, set each Vegetable’s Net worth to 50, and add the sentence “New Vegetables start with 50 Net worth.” to the Rule “The Market”.

Some more dynasty specific Blognomic home page stuff

The header art isn’t hosted on Blognomic yet. I don’t have shell access, so if it’s not a problem, well…

Also, if it seems better to have “Blognomic” and “Second Dynasty of Elias IX” in the header as text as well, then admins, feel free to add the text back.

Proposal: In -joke for Australians

Top Banana threatens a VETO; the deferential votes are just enough to fail the proposal at time out (5-5).
Failed by Hix

Adminned at 29 Sep 2006 11:48:13 UTC

If the Rule “The Market” does not exist, this Proposal does nothing.

Add a sub-rule titled “The Weather” to “Farmer Brown” with the text

If no Vegetable has done so within the previous 24 hours, any vegetable may make a comment in the GNDT of “Weather DICEX VEGGIE”, where X is the number of vegetables in the GNDT. Once this has been done, the Nth vegetable in the GNDT is affected by weather conditions, where N is the result of DICEX. The effect on the vegetable depends on the result of the VEGGIE check.
*If the result is Potato, rain washes soil rich in nutrients into the vegetable patch. The chosen vegetable’s healthfulness is increased by one
*If the result is Pumpkin, sunny weather allows the vegetable to photosynthesise more sugars and become sweeter. The vegetable’s Tastiness is increased by one.
*If the result is Triffid, cosmic rays cause the vegetable to mutate. The vegetable’s Exoticity is increased by one, and it’s Tastiness and it’s Healthfulness are halved.
*If the result is Carrot, most Australian farms growing that type of vegetable have been devastated by cyclones. The vegetable’s net worth is increased by two.

Because Carrots are the most similar to Bananas.

GNDT functionality

I have put a new DICE command into the GNDT—really just cribbed some lines from Kevan. You can now call VEGGIE to get a random vegetable from {Potato, Carrot, Pumpkin, Triffid} (one of these things is not like the others). If we want to add more vegetables to the list at a later date this should be easy to do.

In future games it should be really simple to add a new command to randomly select a word from any list.

Little things need updating

The main title(at least in firefox. I don’t see how it would be different in IE or something) still says “BlogNomic: First Dynasty of Thelonious”. And Rotten Vegetables are still reffered to as idle on the list of Vegetables.

Could someone with the powers to change little things like that make those changes?

Proposal: High speed proposals

2-7, cannot be enacted unless someone changes eir vote. -Elias IX

Adminned at 28 Sep 2006 16:16:58 UTC

Change the first paragraph of the rule entitled “Enactment” to:

The oldest pending Proposal may be enacted by any Admin (and the Ruleset and/or Gamestate updated to include the specified effects of that Proposal) if any of the following is true:-

  * It has a number of FOR votes that exceed or equal Quorum, has been open for voting for at least 12 hours, and has not been vetoed or self-killed.
  * It has been open for voting for at least 48 hours, it has more than 1 valid vote, more than half of its votes are FOR, and it has not been vetoed or self-killed.
  * It has a number of FOR votes that exceed or equal Quorum, no AGAINST votes, and has not been vetoed or self-killed.

Proposal: Green makes the world go round

7-3 is quorum, yay! -Elias IX

Adminned at 28 Sep 2006 16:12:51 UTC

Create a Dynastic called “The Market”

Each Vegetable has a value attached to it, which is tracked in the GNDT in a column “Net Worth”

Create a Sub-rule of “The Market” called “Selling”

Often, a Vegetable with non-zero Exoticity may sell emself on the market. This increases eir Net Worth by E*(T+H)/2 where E is eir Exoticity,  H is eir Healthfulness, and T is eir Tastiness; but resets eir Healthfulness and Tastiness to 5 and eir Exoticity to 0.

Technical fouls

I have enacted all of the proposals with a full quorum before they are ripe—the proposals I have enacted are younger than twelve hours, in violation of 1.5. I’m not precisely sure that I should undo these enactments (the votes are unanimous), so I am going to leave them in place and let someone more scrupulous raise a CfJ if this is suitably disturbing.

Proposal: Current Mood: Cheesy

Reaches Quorum (7-2)
Enacted by Hix.
Ruleset and Gamestate updates brought to you by Angry Grasshopper.

Adminned at 28 Sep 2006 13:25:15 UTC

Add a new rule entitled ““Special Enhancements”” (ie with quotes):

Vegetables can be Enhanced (or unenhanced) in a variety of ways. These are tracked in the GNDT under the “Special” column. When a Vegetable is Enhanced, it shall be marked in the GNDT with the addition of a single word under the “Special” column. No Vegetable may have more than one of any given Enhancement. (For example, e may not have two “Cheesy” Enhancements.)

All the Enhancements that vegetables may have are listed in this rule, along with any effects.

*Cheesy: The Vegetable’s Tastiness increases by ten when this Enhancement is first applied. Any other Vegetable may often decrease this Vegetable’s Tastiness by 1 if this Cheesy Vegetable hasn’t had eir Tastiness decreased that day in this way.
*Mischievous: Within 24 hours after this Vegetable is consumed, e may once change a single letter in a single word in a single Dynastic Rule, as long as the changed version makes grammatical sense and does not create nor change the word “victory”, “win”, “top”,  or “banana”.
*Fried: This Vegetable’s Healthfulness is decreased by three when this Enhancement is first applied.

When a Vegetable is consumed, all eir Enhancements are removed.
Vegetables may not be Enhanced unless a rule explicitly states how a specific Enhancement may be applied.

Create a GNDT column, “Special”.

Proposal: All vegetables are equal…

Passes 8-3, reaches quorum. Enacted by Angry Grasshopper.

Adminned at 28 Sep 2006 13:10:13 UTC

Create a new rule titled “Politics in the Garden”:

During their short experience before being uprooted by Farmer Brown, some Vegetables become self aware and realize their own vegetable nature. Such Vegetables are able to adopt notions on the nature of existence, philosophy, and the political nature of vegetable life. Each Vegetable has a Political Inclination (or Inclination), legal values of which are listed below:

  • Anarchist
  • Communist
  • Dictatorship
  • Democratic
  • Monarchist
  • Tangelocracy
  • Theocratic

New Vegetables have their Inclination set to Dictatorship. Vegetables with a Exoticity below one may not change their Inclination.

Set the Inclination of all Vegetables to Dictatorship, and the Exoticity of the Top Banana to three. Create a GNDT column labeled ‘Inclination’ and populate the fields appropriately.

Does anyone know how to reset the GNDT?

As in a deletion of all the comments and names, so we can race to be the first on the GNDT again?

Proposal: Vegetables dont go Idle

Proposal: Farmer Brown

Passes 11-0, reaches quorum. Enacted by Angry Grasshopper.

Adminned at 26 Sep 2006 16:02:21 UTC

If there is not a rule called “Taste Sensations”, this proposal has no further effect.
Create a Dynastic Rule called “Farmer Brown”.
Create a subrule of “Farmer Brown” called “Tasty List” with text:

The Tasty List is an ordered list of all Vegetables with positive Tastiness.  Each such Vegetable appears on the Tasty List a number of times equal to eir Tastiness, and the order of the Vegetables appearing on the Tasty List is the same as their GNDT order.  For example, if Vegetables Q, L, M, and G appear in that order in the GNDT, with Tastiness values of 2, 0, 5, and 1 (respectively), then the Tasty List is “Q Q M M M M M G”
Farmer Brown keeps the Tasty List attatched via magnets to his refrigerator at all times.

Create a subrule of “Farmer Brown” called “The Harvest” with text:

If no Vegetable has done so that day or within the previous 6 hours, any Vegetable may make a comment in the GNDT of “Harvest DICEX DICE31”, where X is the number of entries on the Tasty List.  Once this has been done, Farmer Brown chooses the Nth Vegetable on the Tasty List, where N is the result of the DICEX check.  The chosen Vegetable is consumed and immediately reincarnated with the following effects, depending on H, where H is the result of the DICE31 check:
*If H is less than or equal to the chosen Vegetable’s Healthfulness, the chosen Vegetable’s Exoticity increases by 1, and eir Healthfulness and Tastiness are halved (rounding down to the nearest integer).  The Veggie has helped Farmer Brown become healthier.  The resulting good karma allows em to be reborn as a member of a more exotic species.
*If H=31, the chosen Vegetable’s Healthfulness, Tastiness, and Exoticity are halved (rounding up to the nearest integer).  The Veggie was tainted.  Farmer Brown’s wife becomes ill and almost dies.  Bad karma abounds, and the reincarnated Veggie bears the punishment.
*If neither of the above bullet points applied, the chosen Vegetable’s Healthfulness increases by 1.  Farmer Brown’s family enjoy their meal.  Farmer Brown gives additional care to this type of Veggie from now on.

Proposal: Tasty and Nutritious and Strange

Passes 10-0, reaches quorum. Enacted by Angry Grasshopper.

Adminned at 26 Sep 2006 15:58:20 UTC

Add a rule to the ruleset entitled “Taste Sensations” with the following text:

All Vegetables have three qualities (Tastiness, Healthfulness, and Exoticity) and these are tracked in the GNDT under the appropriate headings.  Each must at all times have an integer value. Tastiness and Healthfulness may range between the values of 0 and 30, inclusive, while Exoticity may range from 0 to 10.

Add numerical columns labeled Tastiness, Healthfulness, and Exoticity to the GNDT,  set each Vegetable’s Tastiness and Healthfulness values to 5, and set each Vegetable’s Exoticity value to 0.

You have chosen… wisely.

I unidle. Quorum remains 7.

Cayvie returns. Quorum is seven.

Ascension Address

So now I have been passed this nomic age,
And my ideas for theming are absurd.
It’s not exactly “rosemary and sage”,
But vegetables are what I have preferred.

It’s widely known that vegetables have souls.
But just a few know what they yearn to be.
To dance, to party, could that be their goal?
Or cooked to make a dish for you and me?

The one thing that we know for sure is this:
Reincarnation happens all the time.
If vegetables do, in their lives, persist,
Exoticness is how they rate their climb.

My role in this will be the head plantain,
“Top Banana”, that shall be my name!

Musician becomes Vegetable.
Conductor becomes Top Banana.
Repeal all Dynastic Rules.
Make the GNDT fresh and blank.
Questions, clarifications? Leave a comment.

Not an Ascension Address

Okay, I’m making some art… and coming up with an actual ascension address.

Please, with this next dynasty, don’t impose any boundaries on yourselves.

Until the Ascension Address, that is all.

Apparently, my weblog entry must have a title.

As I recall, my tastes are similar to those of Quazie, so I “pass the mantle” (Hmmm… I guess that phrase doesn’t appear in the Ruleset anymore.  Anyway, see the parenthetical note in the last paragraph of Rule 1.9 if you don’t know what I’m talking about.) to former Minister of Interior Design Elias IX.

Hiatus continues until the Ascension Address.

Declaration of Victory: I won the lottery!

24 hours have passed, so I resolve this DoV.  A Quorum of Musicians have voted, and more than half of the votes are in favor.  The Dynasty is over, and Hix is (very temporarily) the new Conductor.

Pseudo-Proposal: New Theme

As the members of Blognomic Company file out of the briefing area, epylar says to Thrawn, “That whole briefing went way over my head.”
Thrawn replies, “Me too.  What’s an ‘Absolutivity Disruption Zone?’”
“I don’t know.  I never understood philosophy.”

A disaster has created an anomalously large ADZ in which reality really does depend on one’s point of view.  Afraid that terrorists, communists or Democrats might use it for their own nefarious purposes, the army has sent the elite Blognomic Company to secure the interior while other troops secure the perimiter.

Each member of Blognomic Company has the following:
1 gun (details not necessery)
1 stun ray (expiramental design.  Considered necessery due to nature of mission)
Body armor (kevlar)
1 helmet (with portable radio unit)
MBEs (Meals Barely Edible)
2 boots
Personal Hygene Kit (toothbrush, toothpaste razors soap etc.)

and most importantly,
1 Soul (purpose unknown).

The company also has a single Radio Amplifier capable of penetrating the ADZ boundary and communicating with Commander Bucky who is outside the ADZ.

Their mission is to neutralize any hostile people who would use the ADZ for their own purposes and destroy the ADZ if possible, then call in the Metaphysics Specialist Squad to destroy the ADZ.

As they march at the approximate location of the ADZ boundary, Epylar says to Thrawn, “What’s in there?”
“I don’t know.”
Immediately, a thick fog surrounds the group.
“Aagh.”
“What?”
“I can’t stand this.  I can’t see anyone”
“Tighten the formation!”
“I don’t like this.  Say we lost the amplifier, nobody would ever find us.”
“Don’t worry, the radio’s right…”
“....”
“.........”
And then he realized the Radio really was gone.

Occasionaly, a Musician who holds an Orchestral Position can change the instrument of any other musician to one within eir own group, provided that musician does not also hold an Orchestral Position.

This would currently allow the Leader to move musicians into the strings group, and the Principal Oboe to move musicians into the woodwinds group.

Adminned at 20 Sep 2006 11:25:12 UTC

Remove the following from the rule “Style”:

Dynamic. Values: Piano, Forte. If three consecutive musicians are playing the same Dynamic, the middle musician’s tempo is set to Allegro if eir dynamic is Piano, or to Adagio if eir dynamic is Forte.

Remove the following from the subrule “Manual Changes of Style”:

A musician with Consonant Harmony and the same Instrument as a second musician with Consonant Harmony may occasionally change the Dynamic of a third musician.
A musician with Dissonant Harmony and the same Instrument as a second musician with Consonant Harmony may occasionally change the Dynamic of a third musician.
A musician with Dissonant Harmony may often change the Dynamic of a musician with the same Instrument and Consonant Harmony.
A musician may often change eir own Dynamic, unless there is a musician with the same Instrument and Dissonant Harmony.

Remove the following from the rule “The Score”:

e must have the same Dynamic as the conductor (and that Dynamic must not be “-”).

Remove the Dynamic column from the GNDT.

Hopefully, if we keep the cellular automaton part of it simple, we can add other, non-cellular-automaton rules.

I’ve just noticed that the ruleset now contains the following (in R1.7).

A non-official post may not, through editing of the blog or otherwise, be changed into an official post, with the following exception. Whilst a non-official post has been posted for less than five minutes and has no comments, the author may change the categories as e wishes.

I thought my proposal had been voted down but apparently it passed.  Therefore, to all those (including me) who’ve made posts twice because they forgot to make it a proposal the first time - there’s no need.  You’re allowed to change a non-proposal into a proposal within 5 minutes of the post provided that nobody has commented on it.

Proposal: The Score, Edition III

Enacted (6-2) after 48hr timeout.  I applied rule 1.1 to correct Passed/Enacted typos that you mentioned in the comments. —Thelonious.

Add a new rule titled “The Score” with the following body.

Any musician who simultaneously meets all the criteria below is said to have Mastered the Score.  A musician who has Mastered the Score has achieved victory.

  • e must be playing an instrument (other than “-”).
  • e must have Consonant harmony.
  • e must have the same Tempo as the conductor (and that Tempo must not be “-”).
  • e must have the same Dynamic as the conductor (and that Dynamic must not be “-”).
  • e must have a Passed of at least 8.
  • eir Passed must be greater than eir Failed.

Add a subrule of “The Score” titled “Tracking”.

Add a subrule of “Tracking” titled “Failed” with the following body.

An integer quantity known as Failed is tracked in the GNDT.

When a musician makes a proposal, e should increase eir Failed by 1 with a GNDT comment containing the proposal’s title.  If more than 10 minutes have passed since e made the proposal and there has been no GNDT modification that increases eir Failed with the proposal’s title in the comment than any musician may increase the proposer’s Failed by 2 with a GNDT comment containing the proposal’s title.

New musicians have eir Failed set to 0.

Add a subrule of “Tracking” titled “Enacted” with the following body.

An integer quantity known as Enacted is tracked in the GNDT.

When an admin enacts a proposal, e must decrease the proposer’s Failed by 1 and increase the proposer’s Enacted by 1.

New musicians have eir Enacted set to 0.

Add Passed & Failed columns to the GNDT and initialise them to 0 for all musicians.

I hope that as the dynasty becomes richer, there will be additions to The Score.

Proposal: Uncluttering

Enacted (6-0) after 48hr timeout. —Thelonious

Adminned at 15 Sep 2006 01:45:55 UTC

Delete the sentence “A Musician going idle, and therefore leaving the GNDT, is a manual change of Style.” from Style.

Rewrite the bulleted list at the and of Style so it reads:

* Harmony. Values: Consonant, Dissonant. The Harmony of a Musician immediately between two Consonant Musicians becomes Consonant. The Harmony of a Musician immediately between two Dissonant Musicians becomes Dissonant.

* Tempo. Values: Allegro, Moderato, Adagio. If a change of Tempo occurs resulting in three consecutive Musicians playing at the same Tempo, the middle one’s Harmony becomes Consonant. If a change of Tempo occurs resulting in three consecutive Musicians playing at three different Tempos, the middle one’s Harmony becomes Dissonant.

* Dynamic.  Values:  Piano, Forte.  If a change in Dynamic occurrs resulting in three consecutive musicians playing the same Dynamic, the middle musician’s tempo is set to Allegro if eir dynamic is Piano, or to Adagio if eir dynamic is Forte.

Add a Manual Changes of Style sub-rule to Style:

These are the changes of Style that may be done manually:

* Any Musician may often change eir Harmony.
* A Musician whose Harmony is Consonant may occasionally change the Tempo of any other Musician.
* Any Musician with Dissonant Harmony may often change eir Tempo.
* A musician with Consonant Harmony and the same Instrument as a second musician with Consonant Harmony may occasionally change the Dynamic of a third musician.
* A musician with Dissonant Harmony and the same Instrument as a second musician with Consonant Harmony may occasionally change the Dynamic of a third musician.
* A musician with Dissonant Harmony may often change the Dynamic of a musician with the same Instrument and Consonant Harmony.
* A musician may often change eir own Dynamic, unless there is a musician with the same Instrument and Dissonant Harmony.
* A Musician going idle, and therefore leaving the GNDT, is a manual change of Style. This is not restricted by any periodicity allowed for other changes of Style and shall be construed as if all Style values of Musicians adjacent to the idling one had turned simultaneously to the values they currently have.

No, it’s not LSD.

Okay, my plan:

To propose major and minor keys, which will be set by Thelonious.

In major keys, the background is white.
In minor keys, the background is black.

A different color is associated with each of the twelve pitches, and will only be used for borders and hovers.

What do you think?

Poe’s idle

Quorum remains at 7.

Proposal: The Score

Self-killed. —Thelonious

Adminned at 13 Sep 2006 01:16:58 UTC

Add a new rule titled “The Score” with the following body.

Any musician who simultaneously meets all the criteria below is said to have mastered the score.  A musician who has mastered the score has achieved victory.

  • e must be playing an instrument (other than “-”).
  • e must have Consant harmony.
  • e must have the same Tempo as the conductor (and that Tempo must not be “-”).
  • e must have the same Dynamic as the conductor (and that Dynamic must not be “-”).
  • After the this rule has been enacted…

    • e must make at least 5 manual changes to the style values in the GNDT, each of which triggers at least 5 automatic changes and each of which e applies correctly on the first attempt.  A change is considered to have been correctly applied if it was made at least 24 hours ago and hasn’t been reverted.  A change is also considered to have been correctly applied if it was reverted but a Call for Judgement ruled that it was correctly applied.
    •
    • e must make at least 8 proposals which are enacted.
    •
    • e must make more proposals that are enacted than proposals that are failed.
    •

Add a subrule titled “Tracking” with the following body.

New musicians have eir Changes, Enacted & Failed set to 0.

  • When a proposal is enacted, the enacting admin must increase the proposer’s Enacted by 1.  e must do this even if the proposer is idle.  This overrides rule 1.2.
  • When a proposal is failed (for any reason), the enacting admin must increase the proposer’s Failed by 1.  e must do this even if the proposer is idle.  This overrides rule 1.2.
  • When a musician makes a manual change to a style value which triggers 5 automatic changes, e must increase eir Changes by 1 provided that e makes the changes correctly on the first attempt.
  • It is believed that the GNDT values introduced by this rule correctly track the conditions required for victory according to the parent rule.  The tracking values will probably be taken as evidence that the conditions have been met.  However, note that the conditions must be met rather than any specific values of the Changes, Enacted & Failed values so, in the case of dispute, a musician will have to prove e has met the conditions from first principles.
Add the following columns to the GNDT and initialise them all to 0 for all musicians.  Changes, Passed & Failed.

I’ve just admin’d 4 proposals but I inadvertently did it out of order.  I should have admin’d….

Orchestral Positions (enacted)
Strict Time (enacted)
Patch (enacted)
Cacophony (failed)

...but, as you can see, I actually did it in this order.

Orchestral Positions (enacted)
Patch (enacted)
Cacophony (failed)
Strict Time (enacted)

i.e. I missed Strict Time on the way past and only noticed after I’d admin’d two more propsoals.

These proposals didn’t affect each other.  However, on a strict reading of the rules, Patch & Cacophony haven’t been admin’d (and the ruleset wiki page therefore doesn’t reflect the actual rules).

This CfJ proposes that the admining of the 4 proposals mentioned above should be considered valid.

With my apologies for the inconvenience.

Semiquaver Rest

Not finding myself very gripped by this dynasty, I’m afraid - maybe the “substantive” style of Nomic is more important to me than I realised. I think I get most of my enjoyment of Nomic from the metaphor aspect of game design, crowbarring existing concepts into smaller, symbolic universes, and this dynasty is being too abstract (and about a subject I have no knowledge of, and which doesn’t lend itself particularly well to casual research) to allow that. I unplug my theremin and go Idle.

Add a Crescendo sub-rule to Time Signature:

If more than half the musicians that have a Tempo have an “Alegro” Tempo, and more than half the musicians that have a Harmony have a “Dissonant” Harmony, then any musician may choose a positive integer number of musicians with a “Dissonant” Harmony and simultaneously change then to “Consonant” - That number must be at least as great as half the current number of musicians with a “Dissonant” Harmony. Immediately upon doing that, this same musician is entitled to make a post to change the Time Signature to x+2/y, where x and y are the values in the time signature in the moment of the post. That post may not be done if it would bring the value for x out of the limits set by the Time Signature rule.

I guess I’m entitled to post this 4rd Proposal under the current Time signature.

Failed due to Self-kill for real by Hix

Adminned at 08 Sep 2006 07:12:50 UTC

Create a new rule entitled “Cacophony” with the following text:

The Cacophony Index (CI) is a real number calculated as (the number of Musicians with Dissonant Harmony - the number of Musicians with Consonant Harmony) / the total number of Musicians. If at any time the Cacophony Index is greater than 0.5 the Conductor may declare an end to the music by making a post to that effect. This shall have the effect of setting all Style columns for all Musicians to “-”.

For example, right now the CI is (9-2)/16 = 0.4375. A CI of 0.5 corresponds to 75% of the players having dissonant harmony and the rest having consonant harmony, or half of the players having dissonant harmony and none of the rest having eir harmony set, or some situation in between.

Rewrite the second paragraph of the “Style” rule to:

Styles may change manually or automatically (i.e. as the result of other changes) as described below.  When an effect (either manual or automatic) would set a Style entry to a certain value, it is considered a change only if the new value is different from its previous value.  All the automatic changes that happen as a result of a manual change occur before another manual change may take place. If a change immediately leads to more than one automatic change, all such automatic changes happen simultaneously, but if simultaneous changes would simultaneously set the same Style entry to different values, that value instead remains unchanged. Automatic changes can lead to more automatic changes and so on, until a state (the set off all the Musicians’ Styles) is reached where no more such changes are required. If, in a sequence of changes, the same state is reached twice, the changes cease having an effect, and no more automatic changes occur until after a manual change. For instance, suppose someone makes a manual change from state A to state B. State B leads automatically to state C, which leads automatically to state A, which leads automatically to state D, which leads automatically to state C. Here it stops, because C was reached twice.

Who broke it?

When I got in this morning, enacted proposals didn’t have the tick icon next to them any more.  I think this is because somebody changed the list of valid statuses to include Enacted instead of Passed but failed to update the stylesheet.

I’ve fixed this by modifying the stylesheet as follows.

.Passed {
background: url(/images/vote/for.gif) left no-repeat;
}

...becomes…

.Passed, .Enacted {
background: url(/images/vote/for.gif) left no-repeat;
}

...which should catch both newly “enacted” proposals and old “passed” proposals (if such things still exist).

If I’ve done the wrong thing, at least you know what I’ve done.

Add a new dynastic rule titled “Time Signature” with the following body.

There is a variable known as the “Time Signature” written in the form x/y where 2 < x < 12 and y is a member of {2, 4, 8}.  The conductor may often change the time signature by making a post to that effect.  With the exception of these posts, the time signature is not officially tracked so it is the responsibility of each musician to track the time signature for emselves.

Add a subrule titled “Proposals” with the following body.

Rule 1.3 does not apply.

Any Musician may submit a Proposal to change the Ruleset or Gamestate, by posting an entry in the “Proposal” category that describes those changes unless…

  • e already has 2x/y proposals pending or
  • e has already made 3x/y Proposals that day

...where x and y are substituted in from the current time signature and fractions are rounded down.

When the conductor changes the time signature, e must veto all proposals that are in excess of the new limit (starting with the most recent such proposal).

Proposals can either be Pending, Enacted, or Failed. When a Proposal is first put forward, it is considered Pending.

Proposal: Dictatorial Conductor II

Reached quorum (11-0). —Thelonious

Adminned at 06 Sep 2006 00:59:34 UTC

Add a new Dynastic rule “Dictator”:

The Conductor has Dictatorial Powers, as follows

Add a sub-rule “Pacing” to it:

Often, the Conductor may change the Style and/or Tempo of any number of Musicians.

To make music, that is my passion.

I’m back, and quorum remains nine.

Proposal: No, not Allegro, Moderato!

Enacted by majority (7-0) on 48hr timeout. —Thelonious

Adminned at 06 Sep 2006 00:56:29 UTC

If Proposal: A little more harmony fails, then so does this one. If Proposal: A little more harmony passes, but Proposal: Styles and tribulations fails, add the following after “A Musician whose Style is Dissonant may often change eir Tempo.” :

A Musician whose Style is Consonant may occasionally change the Tempo of any other Musician.

If Proposal: A little more harmony and Proposal: Styles and tribulations both pass, add the following to the end of the Tempo bullet point in the rule Style

A Musician whose Harmony is Consonant may occasionally change the Tempo of any other Musician.

Giving back a little bit of power to the Consonants…

Proposal: Torus World

Reached quorum (10-3). —Thelonious

If Proposal: Styles and tribulations passes, change the sentence “In this rule, any implied ordering of the Musicians is the order they’re listed in the GNDT.” to read:

In this rule, any implied ordering of the Musicians is the order they’re listed in the GNDT, which wraps so that the last Musician listed in the GNDT is adjacent to the first Musician listed.

otherwise, add the following sentence after “If the Musicians listed directly above and directly below another…” in the rule Harmony:

The last Musician listed in the GNDT is considered to be directly above the first Musician in the GNDT, and the first Musician in the GNDT is considered to be directly below the last Musician.

Well, it’s really more of a circle world than a donut world… but you get the idea. Unbounded spaces are good spaces.

Proposal: Styles and tribulations

Timed out and reaches Quorum (10-0)
Enacted by Hix

Adminned at 04 Sep 2006 18:03:02 UTC

If Proposal: A little harmony fails, so does this one.

Rename the GNDT column Style to “Harmony”.
Replace the rule Harmony with one named “Style” with text:

Each Musician with an Instrument may be playing in a certain Style. Style is tracked in a number of GNDT columns listed below, with the values given below, each column also having the value “-”. All GNDT Style columns of any new Musician are set to “-”, although this is not a Style value. A Musician with no Instrument must have all GNDT Style columns set to “-”, from which they cannot be changed as long as that Musician has no Instrument; this take precedent over the rest of this rule.

Styles may change manually or automatically (i.e. as the result of other changes) as described below. All the automatic changes that happen as a result of a manual change occur before another manual change may take place. If a change immediately leads to more than one automatic change, all such automatic changes happen simultaneously.

In this rule, any implied ordering of the Musicians is the order they’re listed in the GNDT.

The Style columns and their corresponding values are as follows:

* Harmony. Values: Consonant, Dissonant. The Harmony of a Musician immediately between two Consonant Musicians becomes Consonant. The Harmony of a Musician immediately between two Dissonant Musicians becomes Dissonant. Any Musician may often change eir Harmony.

Any Musician with Dissonant Harmony may often change eir Tempo.

If Proposal: No Air Guitars fails, remove the text “with an Instrument” and the sentence beginning “A Musician with no Instrument” from this rule. If Proposal: A little more harmony fails, remove the Tempo bullet point from the list in this rule.

This doesn’t change the mechanics, aside from renaming Style to Harmony. It just settles certain ambiguities and allows for easier additions. Sorry it’s so long, but it should help keep future additions shorter!

Proposal: A little more harmony

Timed out 8-0. —Thelonious.
(This is the first time I’ve admin’d a proposal so please feel free to check I’ve done it right.)

Adminned at 04 Sep 2006 08:40:37 UTC

If Proposal: A little harmony fails, then so does this.

Make the entire body of the rule Harmony a subrule thereof named “Style”. Then add the following as a new subrule of the rule Harmony titled “Tempo”:

Each Musician may play at a Tempo: Allegro, Moderato, or Adagio. If a change of Tempo occurs resulting in three consecutive Musicians in the GNDT playing at the same Tempo, the middle one’s Style becomes Consonant. If a change of Tempo occurs resulting in three consecutive Musicians in the GNDT playing at three different Tempos, the middle one’s Style becomes Dissonant.

A Musician whose Style is Dissonant may often change eir Tempo.

New Musicians have their Tempo set to ‘-’, although ‘-’ is not a Tempo.

Add to the GNDT a column called Tempo, with values “Allegro”, “Moderato”, “Adagio”, and “-”. Set all Musicians’ Tempo values to “-”.

I like the cellular automaton thing, and it would allow for deeper strategizing if a move had ripple effects that were harder to visualize.

Eye is back massive!

Proposal: Proposal: A second attempt at voting harmony

Timed out 2-6.—Kevan

Adminned at 03 Sep 2006 19:27:05 UTC

If the Rule “Harmony” exists, add to the end of “Harmony” the words:

If the oldest pending proposal which has been open for voting for more than 48 hours has had at least two valid votes cast on it, and all musicians performing the same style have voted the same way on it, immediately before the proposal is enacted or failed X/3 votes(rounded down) the same as those cast by those musicians are cast on the proposal, where X is the number of musicians performing that style.

The enacting or failing admin should make a comment on that proposal describing the votes cast by this rule, for example “Dissonance: FOR” if 2 additional For votes have been cast because all Dissonance performing musicians voted FOR.

Proposal: Do the Shuffle!

Adminned at 03 Sep 2006 19:26:26 UTC

Create a Dynastic Rule called “Lost in the Shuffle” with text:

This paragraph is deleted from the Ruleset 48 hours after the Enactment of the Proposal which added it to the Ruleset.  Other paragraphs in this rule have no effect (as if they were italicized).  This paragraph takes precedence over other paragraphs in this rule.

If a comment authored by a Musician who is currently active on a Proposal contains exactly one occurrence of a string of the form “Shuffle=X”, where X is a member of the set {-2,-1,0,1,2}, and the comment’s author has not used such a string in a later comment on that Proposal, then the comment is a “Shuffling Comment”, and the value of X is the Shuffling Comment’s “Shuffle Modifier”.

Zero plus the sum of the Shuffle Modifiers of all Shuffling Comments on a given Proposal is that Proposal’s “Shuffle Value”.  Musicians who make Shuffling Comments should indicate the updated Shuffle Value in parentheses.

If there are any Pending Proposals, then the least value among Shuffle Values of all Pending Proposals is the “Queue Value” (Shuffle Modifiers, Shuffle Values, and the Queue Value may be negative).

In the “Enactment” rule, replace all occurrences of “The oldest pending Proposal” with “The oldest pending Proposal with Shuffle Value equal to the Queue Value”, and simultaneously delete this sentence from the Ruleset.

When this rule is repealed (in its entirety), remove all occurrences of ” with Shuffle Value equal to the Queue Value” from the “Enactment” rule.

A little to say

I’m not ready to unidle until Monday or so, but I really want this to remain a musical dynasty, so here are some ideas I’ve had:

- The Conductor can tune every now and then, so he can call for a tuning session, and everyone will roll dice to tune in an attempt to get eir “pitch”/“tune” to 0, and not anything negative or positive.
- The Conductor can also set the key in which Musicians play, which is any of the 12 pitches, either Major or Minor… maybe each key could mean something different? Or each Musician can also set the key e plays in…
- The Conductor can set a tempo, or conduct Ritardandos and Accelerandos. Use your imagination.
- Two or more Musicians could play together, and Make Music. Effects? I don’t know.
- The Conductor can choose a time signature, which may change essential parts of Blognomic, like the number of proposals/votes allowed, or some other GNDT stats as they pop up, depending on how erratic the time signature is. (13/4, anyone?)

When I get back, I’ll actually propose something, but right now I’m just throwing my ideas into the pool.

If the Rule “Harmony” exists, add to the end of “Harmony” the words:

If all musicians performing the same style vote the same way on a proposal, X/3 (rounded down) votes the same as those cast by those musicians are cast on that proposal, where X is the number of musicians playing that style.
Any votes cast by this rule are not counted to determine whether a Quorum number of FOR votes is reached.
