Proposal: A Hush Descends

Withdrawn. Failed by Kevan.

Adminned at 15 Jul 2022 10:19:57 UTC

After the first bullet list in “Bouts”, add:-

If any Operators have a Readiness of Set, proposals may not be enacted.

Locking the ruleset once somebody commits to a Bout, so that they know the rules won’t change during that match: that they won’t have to try to take multiple possible rulesets into account when programming their bot.

I’m not really sure how the pacing will shake out on this in practice, but the Announcer having complete control over the Ready→Staging bottleneck (plus the proposed 48 hour timeout below) should keep things in check if the queue slows down too much.

I’m not sure I’m entirely comfortable with this. We could easily end up with a proposal lockout for a week at a time if we get several bouts at once and people stagger their Sets.

I don’t know about “easily”: the potential for a lockout gives people a good reason not to stagger their Sets, and either you’re fine with the current ruleset and pitch in with your Set as soon as someone else has, or you’re not and you hold back until the queue moves.

against I think attempting to head off the multiple-rulesets conundrum is quixotic and doomed.

The Giolitti dynasty’s “play under the ruleset as it was at the start of the match” worked alright. Pausing the whole queue has one up on that for being easier for everyone to keep track of, but I’m not sure how the staggered-Set downside would play out in practice.

against Locking out the *entire* Ruleset is a bit much.

It’s only locking amendment by proposal, CfJs and ascensions are unaffected.

against Agree with Kevan, I think a “This match is played as though the rules hadn’t changed, even if they do change” is a better solution
