Proposal: A Little Less Leapfrogging

Fewer than a quorum not voting AGAINST. Failed 1 vote to 4 (with one unresolved DEF) by Kevan.

If “Fair Tax” is not enacted, this Proposal has no effect.

In the rule “Moving”, replace “Randomly select a Snail from the set of Snails other than yourself whose Positions are less than the Finish Line” with the following text:

Randomly select a Snail from the set of Snails who are not Slugs, other than yourself, and whose Positions are less than the Finish Line minus (your Margin multiplied by 20)

If you spam Leapfrog until you get the “best” randomly-selected Snail to be in front of, you potentially restrict the set of possible Snails with each repeated use. It’s not as big of a deal in the beginning when most Snails are not near the Finish Line, but as some start to get near it, this restriction makes a bigger difference.

for though Leapfrog does still seem a bit too powerful for me. I’d support something to limit its range.

imperial This is getting a bit equationy.

@Kevan: it’s not off-theme, really. Consider the snail shell as a representation of the Fibonacci sequence:

against so if your five ahead of someone you can’t use this at all?

The restriction is meant to make Leapfrog a carefully strategic choice of when to use it. Without a limitation of some sort, you might as well just spam until you’re ahead of the Snail that currently has the lead, which doesn’t seem very sporting.

If you really don’t like being limited by number of Moves, maybe we could take up Habanero’s idea of limiting it by range instead, where you could spam it all day, but it only includes other non-Slug Snails within X of you.

[Jonathan] “spam until” is still costing you Moves, though, there’s a meaningful decision in when to stop pushing your luck.

CoV against to keep the queue moving. Would still like to see something to prevent a player from leapfrogging 90cm in one move (this doesn’t even stop that, on second thought).
