Proposal: Anchors Aweigh

Timed out and enacted, 3-1. Josh

In the subrule “Reality Enforcers”, replace this text:

Changing one’s Anchor grants 1 Suspicion.

with this text

Changing one’s Anchor grants 1 Suspicion per Level of the Mindjacker performing the action.

In the rule “Tier 2: Post Singularity Consciousness”, add a subrule named “Astral Connection” and give it the following text:

Whenever a Mindjacker has a non-empty Anchor, that Mindjacker and the Mindjacker whose name matches that Anchor are said to be in an Astral Connection. It is possible to be in more than one Astral Connection at a time. Whenever one of the Mindjackers in an Astral Connection Ascends and afterwards has a Level exactly one greater than the other Mindjacker in that same Astral Connection, the Mindjacker with the lower Level in that Astral Connection is considered the Astral Terminus of that Astral Connection. If the Astral Terminus’s Level is ever not exactly one less than the other Mindjacker’s Level in that Astral Connection, the Astral Terminus is no longer considered the Astral Terminus of that Astral Connection. As an Existential Action, a Mindjacker who is an Astral Terminus may Ascend, subject to the rules regarding Ascension Criteria, and immediately set their Suspicion to 5 after Ascending.

In the rule “Tier 3: Psychic Dreamscape”, add a subrule named “Astral Disjunction” and give it the following text:

A Mindjacker whose name is the Anchor for another Mindjacker may choose to Sever Connection as an Existential Action if their Level is equal to the Level of the other Mindjacker. The Mindjacker who performs this action gains 3 Suspicion and sets the other Mindjacker’s Anchor to empty. This action does not increase the Suspicion of the other Mindjacker.

An idea to do something with Anchors. This proposes a way to use them to hitch a ride to Ascending, although it goes both ways in the Astral Connection, and it’s a steep Suspicion cost to Ascend this way. Since the cost to Sever Connection is flat, it becomes harder to maintain the Anchor relative to the other Mindjacker removing it as the Tiers increase.

i had a similar idea! altho i think this rulestext is a bit cumbersome. one problem with this mechanic might be the fact that you can only set your anchor to the names of players on the same level as you, so once someone ascends and then severs the connection u can’t exactly reopen it easily.

It was intentional on my part to make it harder to reopen the connection. I didn’t want to make it too easy to just coast through the entire dynasty Ascending on someone else’s hard work, but I did want to make it possible to do on occasion.

Do you think that the level restriction should be removed? Or that the suspicion penalty for setting an Anchor should remain at 1? I don’t want to make it so hard that no one ever uses it.

against Too much of a premium for overt cooperation.

Bucky, I think you misunderstand the point. It’s not meant for overt cooperation, it’s meant for competition. If you’re trying to cooperate like lemon is, it’s best to use or introduce other mechanisms.
