A clammy hand reaches up from behind the altar, pulling a sickened figure to its feet. In its other hand it has recovered its sword, now dull and blackened. With the last vestiges of its thought as an Adventurer still swirling, the Monster initiates a Battle with itself as Vanguard.

card:
Begone foul shade!
I banish thee back through this blackened gate!
TyGuy6! Hold this beast down while I chant! I can’t do both at the same time.
Kevan: he/him
TyGuy is wearied after 36 hours of indecision. Duke of Waltham becomes the new Vanguard.
Kevan: he/him
(Looks like I can’t update the wiki from my phone right now, but the Weary asterisk is an automatic effect taken by nobody in particular, rather than part of the action.)
Madrid:
“For gamestate which is tracked in a specific place (such as a wiki page), any alteration of that gamestate as a result of an Adventurer’s action is (and can only be) applied by editing that data in that place.”
The Weariness thing (and its necessary asterisk) comes as a result of your action regardless of it the action itself consists of applying the asterisk, so someone is going to have to asterisk it if they’d like it applied, from my point of view.
Kevan: he/him
Hmm, it depends if you interpret the two steps as the same action, or an action (changing Vanguard) that triggers an automatic effect (the Weariness). For the latter case, the Duke would be the Vanguard but TyGuy wouldn’t be weary.
I’ve now added the weariness. In case it needs repeating, the Duke of Waltham is the Vanguard.
Madrid:
All good, thanks.
Just to clarify my point (but it’s all solved now):
The automatic effect is a result of your action though. (Why is it a result of your action? Because if you didn’t do it, it wouldn’t have happened). And the rule quote before is about a “result”, so, yeah.
The Duke of Waltham: he/him
Kevan! I have no intention of harming you. Come, please! I’ve prepared a herbal ointment that will surely alleviate your symptoms!
I can hear you, Kevan; stop running around! I’ll follow you all across the roof and up the tower if I have to! God’s grace and my own potions give me the strength to keep this up for days!
In fact, I think I’ll rest my fellow Adventurers and pursue the beast myself for another watch.
Kevan: he/him
Was that a Battle Action of Healing the Monster (who was already at Max HP) and reassigning Vanguard to yourself, or a null flavour comment?
The Duke of Waltham: he/him
The former. (I couldn’t affect that HP either way.) You’re next.
Kevan: he/him
I think I’m still Recovering. The Battle Actions so far have been Monster/Card/Duke, so my action is in the most recent 3.
You can take another Battle Action yourself now, since you’re still Vanguard (who can still take actions while Recovering, just not while the Monster is not Recovering).
The Duke of Waltham: he/him
Ah. I’ve been counting this wrong all this time.
Kevan: he/him
Per comments on To Each Their Own it looks like Card is still the Vanguard and has been for some time.
The Duke of Waltham: he/him
Roast in hell, Kevan!
TyGuy, leave the pottery alone and come here to help! You’re Vanguard now!
TyGuy6:
I come back, and everything not is on fire!? Well, that’s teamwork for you!
I also use Fire indiscriminately, hitting myself and the Monster for 44, as well as everyone else for half that damage!
I nearly pass out, so I let card take over as Vanguard. None of us are truly Recovered, yet, but it seems he’s still got a leg to stand on.
TyGuy6:
Woop, I must repeat post after editing the Cathedral down, too!
I also use Fire indiscriminately, hitting myself and the Monster for 44, as well as everyone else for half that damage! (And the Cathedral for twice it.)
I nearly pass out, so I let card take over as Vanguard. None of us are truly Recovered, yet, but it seems he’s still got a leg to stand on.
Kevan: he/him
Looks like TyGuy’s action was illegal as “An Adventurer with 0 Boons cannot use Battle Actions.” TyGuy remains Vanguard.
Kevan: he/him
Also, a note to everyone that with “The Wheat and the Chaff” enacting, Battle Action comments have to be preceded by an [Action] tag to be valid, from now on.
Kevan: he/him
[Weary] TyGuy6 has become Weary, after 36 hours declining to perform a Battle Action. Card is the new Vanguard.
The Duke of Waltham: he/him
Can’t wait to see if Kevan’s second round actually happens. The last three days were… eventful.
The Duke of Waltham: he/him
Sorry, six days. (I thought three days felt too short a stretch…) Your American dates confuse me, hehe.
Kevan: he/him
[Action] The Monster watches the Duke of Waltham step forward and charges down the nave towards him, trailing choking, oily smoke. With inhuman strength the Monster lifts the Duke from his feet and Flings him heavily against a bank of candelabras. The candles scatter, roaring with a sickly green flame which scorches the cathedral walls.
The Duke of Waltham: he/him
[Action] The Duke opened his eyes, then closed them again. Where was he? It felt as if he’d strayed deep inside a cavern, where noxious fumes pressed in from all sides, smothering him and mocking his hopes to ever return to the surface. But no, that couldn’t be…
He opened his eyes again, and the blackened piers of the Cathedral swam into vision. Distant roars reminded him where he was, and why. He managed to sit up, but felt too light-headed to stand – and unsure if his mangled leg would support his weight. He was no use to anyone like this… But what could he do? He recalled leaving his surgeon’s box next to a row of pews, and hoped against hope that it hadn’t joined the field of firewood that now spread before him.
Looking for a sign, he glanced up at the stone apostles ringing the nave, and it took him but a second to regret it. Monsters, all of them! Jumbles of fangs, horns and spikes, each searing him with a stare hotter than any blaze. The Demons of Hell themselves inhabited those statues! He felt it in his heart. But terror soon gave way to a renewed sense of purpose: he couldn’t leave this unspeakable evil escape, even if it was the last thing he did. He had to return to the battle.
He started crawling away from the mess of broken candles and twisted metal, towards where he thought his medical supplies might be. And yet… There he saw them, right in front of him, not five metres away! Could it be? The sign he sought? He thanked the Virgin Mary and all the Saints, and got to work. He wasn’t used to having himself as a patient, but it certainly wasn’t the first time he had encountered such a situation.
Soon, his experienced hands had treated his wounds as best they could, and not long after he felt dozing off to sleep. Card would be Vanguard now… Hopefully that would give him some time to recover.
The Duke fell into a deep slumber, peaceful and dreamless.
He didn’t even wake when the Cathedral’s organ played its last piece of music, as its weakened frame gave way and sent the full complement of pipes crashing down on the floor.
card:
[Action]
Saint Elmo, i channel thee to bring this cathedral down in blazes and stamp out the demons inside. Fire!
The Duke of Waltham is now vanguard
Kevan: he/him
Don’t you have to choose TyGuy at this point? The Duke is Recovering, so you have to go to the second “If no such Adventurer exists, choose an Adventurer who is not Unconscious, the Vanguard or the Monster.” step and pick TyGuy.
The Duke of Waltham: he/him
This step discounts both Recovery and Weariness, and does not place any priority between them, so the choice is up to the Vanguard. Between a willing and an unwilling player, I can see why Card chose me (even though I don’t quite understand why TyGuy has elected not to fight).
Kevan: he/him
Oh, I was somehow reading the word “Recovering” as being in that quoted list when it wasn’t there. I guess it makes more sense for it not to be.
Possibly TyGuy is reserving their option to choose Boons later in the dynasty.
card:
I had thought that you couldn’t choose weary adventurers at all but knew that recovering ones were fair game. At any rate TyGuy6 had chosen to weary out at any opportunity so I’d rather not delay this for 36 more hours
TyGuy6:
I completely agree with this assessment and with card’s decision. I learned the delay tactics first by noticing Kevan’s use of it back in Derrick 3: Monster Maker.
TyGuy6:
(Not that unnecessary delays were a part of it, then. He just stockpiled his early resources, and it seemed smart.)
The Duke of Waltham: he/him
[Action] “This is all going to hell anyway; fire is a most appropriate weapon. You shall be purged from existence, Monster!
“Card, you can finish him off with your sword! If you can catch up with it, of course… I think he’s gone to that chapel over there.”
The Duke of Waltham: he/him
(It distresses me that I can’t edit comments, even for as little as five minutes after posting. I always miss something.)
card:
[Action]
Indeed you are right. Prepare yourself for this slash Kevan!
The Duke of Waltham is vanguard now
The Duke of Waltham: he/him
It’s funny how you need to choose a Vanguard even while killing the Monster…
At any rate, the Battle is over.
Kevan: he/him
Is that fourth action valid? “Adventurers may not take Human Battle Actions while there is a Monster who is not Recovering.” - I stopped Recovering when the third action happened, didn’t I?
The Duke of Waltham: he/him
Why is this rule so confusing? Why?
I think you are right, Kevan.
Kevan: he/him
[Action] Blinded by the flames and the pain, I grab at the nearest target - the Duke - and Fling him against the wooden pulpit, which immediately catches light. The dark cloud of poison mingles with the smoke as it swirls around the cathedral, weakening the ancient stones.
TyGuy6:
Time to give your new Revival mechanic a test run, eh, Duke?
Meanwhile, I guess I’d get called back up, next… Just finish him, card!
TyGuy6:
A basic Slash should do it! We’d have won already had Duke not healed for a turn.
card:
oh that’s right, made a counting mistake because i was on my phone for that post I think a simple copy paste makes it right?
Kevan: he/him
I throw my sword aside and Retreat, lurching rapidly across the oily flagstones and disappearing into a growing, dark miasma that spreads across the cathedral.
Jerez Cathedral loses 175HP to Rotting Presence, I gain 175 Havoc.
I nominate Card as the next Vanguard.
