Proposal: Community Service

Enact a new rule, “Communities”:

Communities exist, and are tracked as a list in this rule. Each Community has a Name (between one and two words), a Faction (a single word), and Ratings for War, Culture and Economy (all integers defaulting to zero), all of which are tracked in the community list in this rule.

Each Community has an Attitude towards each Wizard, which is either Suspicious, Indifferent or Friendly, defaulting to Indifferent to each Wizard. This is tracked in the community list in this rule, although if a Community is Indifferent to a Wizard, this need not be spelled out.

The Communities are:-

  • The Harbour: Neutral Faction. War = 0, Culture = 0, Economy = 1. Friendly to Derrick.

The size of a Community is the sum total of its Ratings. A Community with a size of 5 or less is a Village. A community with a size between 6 and 10 is a Town. A community with a size of 11 or more is a City.

Reproposing of a bit of Derrick’s opener, with some tweaks.

ok, all of this tracking in the rule-set itself is making me nervous. I’m not opposed, just nervous.

Agreed with Derrick - surely the GNDT can be used to track the stats of the Communities?

[derrick] We’ve done it before, where it’s been for a simple bit of data that didn’t merit a full wiki page. (ExpressionEngine is really mangling my attempts to link to a search URL here, so you can google site:blognomic.com “tracked in * rule”.) So long as it’s for entities which are only ever created by proposal and where we’re careful about what can change their stats, it’s okay. (I’ve bumped “a text string” down to a much more limited number of words, though, in response here.)

[LinkVanyali] Not very elegantly, as the GNDT is hard-coded as a single table of rows and columns. We can add Communities as extra pseudo-player rows, but they’d either have to use the same stat columns as Wizards, or leave us with a lot of unused grid space.

I see. And looking at the dates, its statistically about time for us to pull that stunt again.

I was hoping to make Communities created by card, but we can work around that.
