Proposal: Darkness around Every Corner

Withdrawn. Failed by Kevan.

Adminned at 07 Dec 2022 10:42:15 UTC

If the proposal “Spooky Grid Action” or “Starting in the Foyer” failed, this proposal has no effect.

Add a new dynastic rule titled “Rooms”:

There exists an ordered list of Rooms, which are publicly tracked. Every Explorer has a publicly tracked Room they are in, defaulting to the Foyer. Every Room has the following qualities:

* A unique flavour text Name by which it may be referred to
* A list of Items which are in the Room, defaulting to no Items
* A Dark or Lit state, which is Dark unless otherwise specified
* Optionally, Rooms accessible in any cardinal direction or custom Exit Direction from this room
* A Type, defaulting to Central Hall

All of the qualities of a Room are publicly tracked, except for its Type which is privately tracked by the Narrator.

If an Action “requires light/darkness”, it may only be performed if the actor is in a Lit/Dark Room, respectively; if this condition is not fulfilled the Action instead does nothing.

Every Room Type has an Effect. The list of all Room Types can be found below:

{| class="wikitable"
|+ Types
! Name || Effect
|-
| Central Hall || A large space, mostly empty except for the cobwebs everywhere and a dim lamp in the middle. This room is considered to be Lit.
|}

At any time, the Narrator may add to the list of Rooms or add connections between Rooms in any way they see fit. They should update the Mansion Map whenever they do so.

Add a new Room with no other adjacent Rooms, a Type of “Central Hall”, and a name of “Foyer”.

In “Explorer Actions”, replace “Peek, together with a direction” with “Requires light: Peek, together with a direction”.

Secret information might be a nice atmospheric direction to go in what with all the darkness. Also divorcing the Name of a Room from its actual effect (dictated by Type), so you need to figure out what a Room actually does.

I have a small reservation about room information being tracked, sometimes redundantly, in three different locations (once, comprehensively, in the Narrator’s private list; once, with location information, on the Map; once in gamestate tracking).

For a start, it creates a tiny vortex of illegality whenever a room is created as it propagates through to the other locations where it must legally be tracked.

I think I would be tempted to narrow it down a bit by having room names only be publicly tracked and other room characteristics only be privately tracked, for now, and leave the revelation of room characteristics for a later proposal, as I’m struggling to model how that will work with the turn structure.

We should also be mindful of the admin load on JD, especially as they are a first-time Emperor.

I’m willing to shoulder a fair bit of admin load, but probably not this much. I agree with Josh that the properties of a Dark room should be scaled back a bit. I would be in favor of keeping the Dark/Lit room state and the corresponding “requires light/darkness” Action rule, if you would be willing to adjust your Proposal to focus on that part.

Per Josh I’ve removed most of the private information tracking, so now the only thing that’s privately tracked is the room type. If JD wants to they can make more qualities privately tracked, I’ll leave that bit up to them.

Since Peek is the default planned action after “Spooky Grid Action”, if it’s not universally legal that’s a potential problem where the value of the variable is indeterminate.

Besides, Explorers should logically be able to Peek out of a dark room, even if all it does is reveal that the next room over is also dark.

I’d've stuck with this; a fix proposal would have resolved that issue.
