Proposal: Fixing the Broken Stage

Enacted popular, 10-1. Josh

Adminned at 29 Dec 2022 23:05:25 UTC

Change the rule “Atmosphere” to read as follows:

There is a private nonnegative integer variable tracked by the Narrator named Dread, defaulting to 0. There is a publicly tracked variable named Mood, defaulting to “Calm”.

Set Dread to 0.

yea; orphaned variable and a potential scam

there was a broken stage somewhere before in Blognomica; in the reigns of a certain person named Josh that nearly killed an explorer…..

The current text, for ref:

There is a privately tracked variable named Dread, defaulting to 0. There is a publicly tracked variable named Mood, defaulting to “Calm”.

‘Publicly tracked’ is defined in the rule Dynastic Tracking, so specifying the location further is unnecessary. ‘Privately tracked’ is not sufficiently defined, so that change is probably worthwhile and necessary.

It might be worth specifying that the Narrator should start the Dread count from wherever it would be had they been tracking it all along; presumably they would have been, but a corollary of Dread becoming tracked by them at this stage would be that it would reset to zero.

It’s also worth noting that describing these as ‘variables’ is about the vaguest way possible to describe them; in the case of Mood that’s probably not a problem as it has defined values, but Dread appears not to have any restrictions on what it can be; it can be 12, or 7 billion, or negative π, or a pumpkin, or The Player Named Josh Has Achieved Victory. Could we set it to be explicitly a numeric variable, at least?

@Josh Modified.
At least imo as the default of Dread is a integer and all modification methods of Dread is integer based; I thought that there is no rationale that you can inject a text string in it. But modified for prevention; just in case.

@quirck Dread is definite nonzero and a positive integer; but backtracking the value is both timeconsuming and not that important
