Proposal: Insane in the Membrane

If the Proposal “It Flies Back Into your Hand” is not enacted, this Proposal has no effect.

Add the following bullet at the end of the bulleted list “Explorers have the following tracked fields:” in the rule “Explorers”:

Sanity, which is a non-negative integer with a maximum value of 10. It defaults to 10.

In the subrule “Mansion Phase”, add the following bullet before the bullet that starts with “Submit a blog post with the category Story Post”:

Apply all Drawbacks from all Items in the gamestate.

Add a subrule to “Items” called “Monkey’s Paw” and give it the following text:

This Item is Cursed.

When the Monkey’s Paw is held by an Explorer at the beginning of the Explorers Phase, that Explorer gains access to a special Ploy named “Change Dread by N”, where N is an integer from -10 to 10 inclusive chosen by that Explorer. When carried out as a Planned Action, “Change Dread by N” adds N to the current Dread value. If this would reduce Dread to a value below 0, Dread is instead set to 0. That Explorer is not informed of the current or new value of Dread.

Drawback: “If an Explorer is holding the Monkey’s Paw, subtract 1 from their Sanity”.

You might want to be careful about the wording of applying all actions and effects of items. It might turn all flashlights on or off each turn, for example.

Should I just change it from “actions and effects” to just “effects”? I wanted to ensure that the Monkey’s Paw effect is carried out during the Mansion Phase without having to add a bullet just for it.

Suggestions welcome while there is time to edit.

The current ruleset is already being a bit too casual in sometimes using “effect” as a keyword and sometimes not (including “an Effect which is carried out as the effect of the Planned Action”). That’s probably a sign that we should be finding some other words to use, or at least naming them explicitly as “Item Effect”, “Malfeasance Effect”.

I’d be tempted to use “Drawback” for items, here. It restricts future ongoing effects to being negative, but that could be an interesting path to go down.

Good suggestion. I made the edits.

Is it your intent that trying to lower the Dread below 0 instead leaves it at the prior value?

Good catch, just edited again. My intent is that trying to lower the Dread below 0 instead sets it to 0. Is the new wording sufficient enough?
