Call for Judgment: Invading Shuriken Island

Failed with timeout 6 to 3 - Jack

Adminned at 17 Mar 2008 14:27:42 UTC

Darknight and I recently participated in an insult swordfight.  Jack declared Darknight the winner, and Darknight rolled a 13 per the rule “Insult Swordfighting” (2.13).

However, the rule “Home Land” (2.13) states, “While at port, a Captain can never be pillaged or pillage someone.”  I am currently located at Port; therefore, I cannot be pillaged.

I went ahead and reverted Darknight’s pillaging and stated why I was doing so.  Jack then undid my revertion, so I reverted it back, again stating why I believed it should be reverted.  Jack once again undid my revertion, stating that if I disagreed, I should raise a CfJ.  If you are thoroughly confused now, just read the GNDT log.

If this CfJ passes, subtract 13 from Darknight’s Gold statistic and add 13 to my Gold statistic.

The exact text of the Sword-Fighting rule doesn’t explicitly mention pillaging in the winner-to-loser transfer. Can it be said that pillaging is occurring when this happens?

for I for one agree with yoda, since I made that part of the rule to start with. pillage and plunder are, to me, one and the same. Ye may be a ninja, but I be respecting ya after our duel of words

against Pillaging isn’t even defined in the ruleset, so I don’t see how it’s applicable here.

against As Purplebeard states, ‘pillaging’ is not ever defined in the ruleset. Nor is it mentioned in the ‘Insult Swordfighting’ rule.

A sneaky attempt to avoid losing gold, suitable for a ninja, but I have to agree with Purplebeard, who voiced the same things I though before ever reading the comments.

I have to respectfully agree with the treacherous Purplebeard, we don’t even define “pillaging” yet, but the rules do specifically state that after swordfighting the winner takes gold…  I mean, if this passes could it then be argued that every time a pirate uses the “plunder” action they must be at sea?

Yoda:

What is wrong with that?  I would even be fine with “Lethal Skillz” having that restriction.

for I already thought the plunder action must be taken at sea. Additionally, I figured that Ninjas would also be discouraged from participating in swordfights, because of the effect if they won.

However, I do believe that ‘plunder’ should be made more explicit, to clear any misconceptions. “No shouting across the ocean” will help in any case.

Purplebeard:

‘Pillage’ and ‘plunder’ aren’t synonymous with each other. Neither are ‘pillage’ and ‘take’. Therefore, the last sentence of rule 2.12 currently has no effect whatsoever since pillaging isn’t mentioned anywhere else in the ruleset. I can’t make it much clearer than that.

Interesting tidbit: Yoda technically wasn’t even at port when the swordfight was resolved (his location was undefined).

against Pillaging/plundering is never mentioned.  And if someone reverts a change you make because the believe you did not apply a rule properly, you have to raise a CfJ.  As I found out.
