Proposal: It’s not stealing - It’s salvaging

Create a new rule under “Personal Belongings” entitled “Salvaging”

As a Daily Action, any Survivor may attempt to Salvage an Item from the sea by rolling DICE10 in the GNDT. If that Survivor rolls a 1, then they may arbritrarily select an Item which a human is able to carry, and add that to the Items they own, with an Uncertain Flag and a Damp Flag. If a Survivor rolls a 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 or 10, then they fail to gain any items that day. No Survivor may make an attempt to Salvage more than once each day.

Thought this would be an interesting dynamic to slowly increase the number of items aboard the lifeboat. I’m thinking that this would be later amended to further specify which items people receive, and their qualities, but this would make a start.

for It’s a bit of a grind mechanic (there’s no real reason not to do this every day), but given that flooding the lifeboat with food and equipment is likely to end up benefitting the group more than the individual, I think we can live with it.

I don’t like that we can choose what to find. And we need 16 actions to try and find something. Rolling a DICE(number of survivors) every day to determine who gets what would make it way easier.
And the Item must be able to float.

I’m uncertain as to whether this wording permits the newly discovered item to have an edible flag when discovered. Views?

[bateleur] Good point. Actually, it looks like any new Item can have an Edible flag - both this and the existing rule allow the player to “select an Item”, and an Item “has a Name [and] may have one or more Flags”.

for in that case.

No, but the Captain may add it later.
About my first complaint:
What about randomly choosing the found object from a list like
this.
This would add the realism of getting mostly rubbish from the sea, and nothing edible.

[Kitty] No, I think “arbritrarily select an Item which a human is able to carry, and add that to the Items they own” means you can say “the Item I choose is a Potato that has the Edible Flag”.

That is a magnificent list.

[Kev]
That’s the part I don’t like. We already can choose what we saved from the boat. We can choose when we want to find an island (!). At least we should get what the sea offers us, and not what the useful items we decide to “find”.
And my point was that people hardly ever find something edible floating in the middle of the ocean.

[Kitty] Sure, completely agree with you, I’m just saying I think Bateleur is right when he says that Items can have edible flags attached to them by the player who creates them.

Bucky’s point is good. As is HKoD’s. I’ll propose some amendments as per the discussion.

Actually, how do we select an Item on that page? Is there a text version?
