For the benefit of those who don’t speak French, the post says “Ik hoop dat ik meer dan een week verblijf in deze tijd. Quorum is negen.”

...what do you mean, you don’t speak Dutch either?

I didn’t know Dutch for “week” was “week”.

It’s pronounced “wehk”, though, with a long (in the sense of “pronounced longer”, not in the English sense of “screwed-up orthographically”) “e”.

Is there no French (or Dutch) word for ‘quorum’?

It’s more like ‘wake’ actually. ‘Quorum’, like many other words that are borrowed from Latin, remains unchanged between most western languages.

In IPA: /we:k/

No, wait, /βe:k/.

Purplebeard: Idle

/Ê‹e:k/ is the more common pronounciation, but whatever. It still doesn’t sound anything like ‘wehk’.

It’s closer to “wehk” then to “week” at any rate.

Granted, but a ‘slightly less wrong’ pronounciation isn’t of much practical use (unless the gradient descent optimization algorithm is somehow applicable to the field of phonetics).

Well, at least this tells anyone who wants to learn Dutch, doesn’t already know to learn the orthography when learning a language, and happens to read this post that English’s vowels do not apply to anything except English.

Being a native French-speaker, I agree. =)
