Proposal: Knight Life

Times out and fails 1-5 - Larrytheturtle

Enact a new rule entitled, “Settling” as a subrule to “Land”:

A Noble has a Settler score equal to Floor( (K - O) * U/P ), where K is the number of knights, O is the number Occupied parcels, U is the number of Unoccupied parcels, and P is the total number of parcels that the Noble has.

Whenever Time is Advanced, any Noble with a positive Settler score must turn that many Unoccupied Parcels into Occupied Parcels.

Another formulation. This formula scales well. With knights, but no Occupied Parcels, it is guaranteed to populate up to the number of Knights held. With more, occupied parcels, it takes more knights to service these area, scaling back development in later game. The ‘must’ is to prevent Nobles from amassing Knights, but not occupying the land. (After all, the knights will want the land). I may also post some calculations.

for Out of all the attempts, this is probably the best.

Some Example Values:

(K,O,U) = Settle
(5,5,1) = 0
(5,7,2) = 0—too few knights
(5,3,5) = 1—small gain
(7,3,5) = 2—more knights will increase the rate of rise
(10,2,3) = 4—note in this case they MUST transfer all 3
(10,9,2) = 0—here’s an example where K>O doesn’t guarantee an increase. We need more knights!
(20,0,20) = 20—danger in stocking up!!

So if I have 50 knights, and 2 unoccupied parcels what happens? I need to transfer 50 which I can’t legally do, so I don’t transfer any.

You probably want MIN(Floor( (K - O) * U/P), U). I’d personally rather the rate be slower, but at least its more interesting than just “pay one knight”  imperial

I just missed that piece, but you must transfer as much as possible.

for A little hard to wrap my head around, but sounds good.

what part of the rules says you must transfer as much as possible? The rules are fairly explicit that if you don’t have enough of something to transfer it, you just can’t do it. Seems to me like that applies here.

Is this the part in question: “must turn that many Unoccupied Parcels into Occupied Parcels.”

Purplebeard:

against The ‘must’ part is unenforceable; that part should just be performed by the Noble who advances time. My other complaint is that this solution is still rather inelegant.

against CoV because the “must” is unenforceable, as Purplebeard, Earl of Norfolk said. Also, if you had a positive score you could change anyone’s Parcels, not just your own. Just putting that out.

Skju:

against That is a nasty bit of wording.

I’m ambivalent about this, at this point. Just as long as an immigrant walks into a parcel passes. imperial
