Proposal: Lacustrine Cities

Unpopular, 2-5. Failed by JonathanDark.

Adminned at 02 Apr 2025 22:42:39 UTC

Add the following as a subrule to the rule Announcements of Attainment, called Lacuna Protocols:

If the game is in Lacuna, and the Nomicer who posted the Announcement of Attainment no longer meets the criteria to make such a post, then as a Lacunaic Action any Nomicer may spend a Joker to make the following atomic action, called a Lacunaic De-escalation:

* Increase the numeral between the words “least” and “times” in the first sentence of the rule Announcements of Attainment by one
* Set the Jokers of all Nomicers to 3
* Make a post to the blog announcing that the game has exited Lacuna.

Once that action has been completed, the game is no longer in a state of Lacuna.

The dynasty is only a week old. I don’t have a strong view as to whether a week is enough for this one of if there’s more meet on the bones that people are interested in exploring, so I thought I’d give you the option.

I think the genie is out of the bottle now. I’d have voted in favour if we weren’t in Lacuna yet.  against

In what way is it “out of the bottle”? What’s happened that’s not move-on-able from?

I have a different take. This feels like ais successfully exploited a gap in the dynastic rules, and I don’t know that offering a way to take that away is fair, even if there’s more to explore in this dynasty.

The rationale for a dynasty ending isn’t that the players are “done” with it, although that happens sometimes. The rationale is that someone got the dynasty to its end stage, however that is defined at the time.

You even predicted that the scam sprint would happen in 5 days. I’m not saying that we should honor such a prediction, and maybe you were saying it in jest, but the truth is that this is always possible, especially when the players allow a victory condition to be defined early rather than later.

Philosophically I wonder if it’s better to agree not to define a win condition for the first two weeks just to let a dynasty find its legs. In any case, we are here now, and that’s the real “cat out of the bag”. Going back to “not end stage” and then finding our way here again feels a little cheaper having been here already.

To follow up just to be clear, I’ve been enjoying this dynasty and I had plans to explore more of it. But, having played enough dynasties where my personal plans were interrupted by someone else triggering the end stage sooner than expected, I’ve just learned that this is an achievement to be celebrated and not reverted, if it was legal. I don’t feel right taking it away just to appease my own selfish reasons.

imperial Haven’t given this my full thought yet, but putting down a placeholder DEF to discourage Raven and Darknight from using their “if unopposed emerging consensus then agree” voting heuristic and swinging the outcome.

against The game has been won- or is about to be, in any case.  I do wish we could have explored it longer, but I don’t want to revert the endstate now, as it was both very clever and fully legal.

against partly because it seems unfair to have the Lacuna taken away after I put in the trouble of triggering it, and partly because the “reset Jokers to 3” is going to be a mess – it just encourages trying to get as many Joker spends as possible in immediately before the reset, and those are powerful enough to make somewhat of a mess of the Equity stats.
