Proposal: Less Predictable Booms

Timed out and enacted, 4-3. Josh

Adminned at 31 Jul 2022 13:36:34 UTC

In the rule Ending a Bout, change the entry for Sudden Death to read as follows:

Sudden Death: In Sudden Death, the Announcer continues to process turns as normal until the Bout ends due to TKO, with the following changes: all Condition losses are doubled, and each turn, every square has a chance to Detonate, with its chance to Detonate being defined as follows: (x+y)*y%, where x is the square’s proximity to the middle of the arena (with square 10 having an x of 1 and squares 1 and 19 having proximities of 10) and where y is how much time has elapsed in Sudden Death (i.e. the current turn number minus 60). Any Bot who is on a square when it Detonates takes 50% Chassis damage.

Is the chance to detonate intended to be a % chance? Because it’s currently able to be interpreted as having a probability of greater than 1, i.e. more than a 100% chance to detonate each turn.

I am against this because it removes the point of previous sudden death: whoever had a better position prior to sudden death wins. Here, it’s just barely better than a coin flip.

It’s quite a bit better than a coinflip; position 1 under this has a 2% chance of blowing, compared to 11% for position 10. The advantage disimproves but that’s sudden death for you; your strategy should never be “evade until sudden death and the dodge better than the other guy”

Round # | square 1 odds | square 10 odds
1 | 2% | 11%
2 | 6% | 24%
3 | 12% | 39%
4 | 20% | 52%
5 | 30% | 75%

I don’t think it’s ever a coinflip; yes, there’s random chance involved, but that’s how you make it not predictable, but position still really *matters*

I’ve got mixed feelings about this one. While on one hand a tactic of dodging constantly would be boring, my opinion is that any viable tactics should mainly be dealt with through parts or reaction options, not through changing the rules on bouts themselves unless there’s some massive issue that needs addressing.

I think I’m going to vote against
