Maintenance requests

I’m going to try to carve out some time this weekend to work on the problems noted in the previous thread. Are there any other requests while I’m at it?

I’ll update the following list with all the stuff I plan to do, comments on it, etc.:

  • Sidebar timestamp discrepancies: Some people have incorrect timestamps on proposals, sometimes. Clearly it’s a timezone issue (shudder) of some kind. Does it make a difference to anyone whether you’re logged in or logged out at the time?
  • Old wiki issues: Kevan suggested putting an HTTP auth password on it, but his example is just as well served by a robots.txt file, which I’ve now added. Are there any other reasons to protect it from viewing? (Also, note to self: did I make it as read-only as it can easily be made?)
  • Responsive theme: It will probably be pretty freaking easy to make the site mobile-friendly, at least as far as viewing regular pages goes. (The admin side is almost certainly not, though, so don’t anyone get your hopes up too high about that.)

Timestamp problem still occurs when logged out, and does now seem less consistent than it did before. A fresh theme would be nice, and might fix the problems - the current templates are something of a mess of nested HTML and missing tags (open proposals have working title tags, closed proposals don’t even have a head tag).

Is everyone seeing the timestamps offset by +6 hours, or just players in my timezone?

The .htaccess suggestion was just to stop the spam pages being spidered by anything, ever - that’s partly just moral outrage against the spammers, but it’d guarantee that blognomic.com didn’t end up on any “untrusted site” lists for hosting that sort of content, if anything scanned it without respecting the robots.txt. We’d just give the .htaccess password in brackets next to the link to the old wiki from the new one.

I can still edit the old wiki, for what it’s worth. I suppose you may as well throw in $wgGroupPermissions[‘user’][‘edit’] = false; and $wgGroupPermissions[‘sysop’][‘edit’] = false; so that nobody can ever edit it again.

(And for context to Darknight’s comment, someone else responded to Darknight mentioning this earlier, saying that follow-up comments were working fine for them. Darknight also failed to get a wiki account notification email, but it’s worked for everyone else who’s needed one. Maybe @aol.com spam filters don’t like blognomic.com, or there’s some other problem with Darknight’s email?)

Mobile-friendly would be for

Responsive theme is looking good. I’m also not seeing the timestamp bug any more, from a few rerolls of various pages - good work if that was fixed.

Yep, timestamp should be fixed. Mobile theme doesn’t work right on some archive pages, I hope to get that ironed out tonight.

The whole <head> thing is a huge mess. I want to fix it too, but I need to carve out enough time that I don’t risk leaving it in a half-fixed state.

Oh, and the old wiki is so very old that none of the modern ways of making it read-only are implemented yet. So yeah I’ll put a password on it soon.

post:nth-of-type(n+11) (hiding all but the first ten blog entries on a page) is a neat trick to keep things brief, but seems to be triggering on the archive month pages as well, despite the not(.archive).

The mobile version looks nice, but would be nice to have some version of the sidebar. Particularly the pending part.

It’s there if you scroll down far enough, isn’t it?
