Maps

Hmm… a spy game.  But we can’t meaningfully use delightful phrases like “Our man in Berlin” without there being a geographic component to the game.  Here’s http://www.xcelco.on.ca/~ravgames/dipmaps/modern_ra.gif a map of Europe, divided into territories.  (Just Europe; doing the whole world would probably be much more complicated).  (It’s borrowed from a variant of Avalon Hill’s board game _Diplomacy_).  Perhaps an appropriate proposal can adopt this map or some other map as a gamestate document, to permit Agents to have locations and to permit locations to be changed under appropriate circumstances.

Hix is working on a mpa like thing.

Actually, I’m not sure we need an actual map.  It seems to be a staple of the genre that Agents can move about the world without restriction, so I think a list of cities may be enough.

I was hoping for some sort of map, even if it was a free movement map.  For combat and whatnot, although for sneaky agents (assuming we get statistics) you wouldn’t know if we were in the same city or not.

I prefer an actual map, not free movement—this can make Gadgets more important.

Assuming that the map identified in the top post is the one that gets used, I’d make the following further suggestions:
- Each Agent is located in exactly one territory at a time.
- Generally, locations are kept secret except when rules require or permit location about an Agent’s location to be disclosed.
- Only territories that are named on the map are considered to exist.  (This means that Moscow exists, but Sudan doesn’t, and neither does the island between White Sea or Barents Sea).
- Each territory has a unique three-letter name (if the territory on the map has a 3 letter name like “Lit”, then this is its name; if the territory has a longer name with certain letters underlined, like “Western Sahara”, then “WSA” (the underlined letters) are the territory’s name.  This follows from the use of these maps in Diplomacy games where game orders are usually given using the three-letter names of provinces; it might also make it easier to include information about particular provinces in the GNDT)
- Starting locations of Agents are kept secret (except for the Mastermind, if that’s necessary).
- Generally, an Agent can move only to an adjacent territory.
Movement to water (medium blue) is permitted only if the Agent has a Gadget that permits it.
- Certain provinces (LON, FRA, MOS, CAI) are linked by airport- an Agent can move from one to another, but there is a public notice posted to the blog indicating that the agent has been spotted on an airplane.
- If an Agent enters a colored country on the map (UK, France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Poland, Ukraine, Russia, Turkey or Egypt), there is a chance that a notice is posted indicating that the Agent is spotted entering the country (but not indicating which province).
- Special rules will govern the interaction between agents in the same territory.
- Certain territories might have special features (like Evil Mastermind’s Hideout).
- Certain Gadgets can be available for pickup in certain territories.
