Proposal: Marco!

Failed, lots to two. Josh

Adminned at 08 Jan 2010 07:27:59 UTC

Add a new rule, entitled “Hide and Seek”:

Some Adventurers are hidden. These Adventurers may be referred to as Hiders. There may never be more than 5 Hiders. All non-hidden Adventurers may be referred to as Seekers. A Hider may never also be a Seeker and a Seeker may never also be a Hider. A Hider must have an account on Twitter. (The account is not required to be active for any purpose other than that stated in this rule.)

Provided that they have fulfilled other criteria that permit them to do so, and have not changed their location in the preceding 24 hours, an Adventurer may Hide by making a post to that effect to the front page of BlogNomic. They must then append an asterisk to their location in the GNDT. This asterisk designates the Adventurer as a Hider and must remain next to their location in the GNDT for as long as they are Hiders. They must also immediately PM the Djinn with a secret hashtag - preferrably not one that is in common use. (The Djinn has the right to refuse any hashtag that they deem unsuitable for any reason, and demand or impose a replacement.)

Thereafter the Hider may move as normal, except now they are not obligated to update the GNDT to reflect any change in their location until 24 hours after the move has taken place. Instead, they must record their movements as they happen on Twitter, including the hashtag that they specified to the Djinn when they became a Hider.

If a Seeker suspects that they are in the same location as a Hider, they may make a post to BlogNomic to that effect, naming the Hider in question. The Hider or the Djinn must then confirm or deny the accusation as soon as possible. If the Seeker was correct then that Hider ceases to be a Hider, and the Seeker may steal one of the Hider’s Relics. A Hider may not move while there is an unresolved accusation against them.

If a Hider manages to stay Hidden for more than 30 consecutive days then they have achieved victory.

For the purposes of this rule, to be “in the same location” is defined as:
a) having the exact same location value;
b) being in a location that is no more than 10% larger than the target location, or 10 square miles, whichever is larger, and which contains the location being sought;
c) being in a location that is contained completely by the location being sought; or
d) being within 20 miles of the location being sought.

A Hider faces some limitations to their actions, as follows:
• A Hider may not use any Place of Interest as specified under rule 2.6.2.
• A Hider may not Consult an Oracle or find a Relic.
• A Hider may make a wish, as long as they are otherwise legally able to do so.

Wishes may not be used to change, reveal or otherwise tamper with the location of a Hider, unless the wish is made by that Hider themselves, nor may they be used to jump to the location of a Hider if that Hider’s location cannot be accurately specified by the wisher (i.e. wishes along the lines of “I wish I was where Hider 1 is” will be rejected).

Add the following to the list of Relics in rule 2.9.1:

Code Wheel
Allows the possessing Adventurer to Hide. 5 numbered Code Wheels exist, and are consider to be separate relics for the purposes of consulting oracles.
Code Wheel 1 status: unfound
Code Wheel 2 status: unfound
Code Wheel 3 status: unfound
Code Wheel 4 status: unfound
Code Wheel 5 status: unfound

If a majority of EVCs to this proposal contain the text “get started”, then the enacting admin must decide which Locations the five Code Wheels will occupy and publish them in a separate post to BlogNomic.

against  I don’t like Twitter. It’s overused as it is, and I don’t want it seeping into BN.

I don’t like twitter, or hash tags, or grindy collection of tokens.

Spike - I get the dislike of Twitter - well, actually, I don’t, it’s just a tool and I don’t see the point of ruling it out, but I understand that it’s the kind of thing people get worked up about - but I don’t get the claim of grindiness, when there’s really not anything grindy in this proposal.

That looks way too long to read. But I saw Twitter. =/ I don’t like having to make external accounts to play Blognomic.  against

I don’t see a problem with Twitter - it seems a good choice for an off-site and datestamped record of some simple game events. (Although I suppose an alternative would be to make GNDT or blog comments encoded via a mailed-to-the-djinni key, with some of them being fake “ha ha, didn’t move”.)

against I’m not sure about the ease of evasion when you can jet between any two buildings in a small country as a daily action, though, and the victory condition seems a little odd (“Wrest infinite power from the Djinni, or sneak between various buildings for 30 days!”). This would be great as the core mechanic of a new dynasty, though.

against Yeah, seems a little kludgy to me.  Especially with that VC.  Especially without any real way of determining where someone is (as I understand it).

Just to be clear, upon review, I dislike the mechanic even without the Twitter component.
