Proposal: No Relation

In “Visitors”, replace “If a Group contains fewer than four Visitors, that Group may create a new Visitor with a Name of the Group’s choice which is different from all other Visitor Names (including Visitors belonging to idle Groups), under their control.” with:

If a Group contains fewer than four Visitors, that Group may create a new Visitor under their own control with a Name of the Group’s choice which is different from all other Visitor Names (including Visitors belonging to idle Groups), and which is not a Famous Name.

Add to that rule:-

A Name is Famous if a regular Wikipedia search for it, within quote marks, returns any results (excluding results which only exist as a result of an edit to Wikipedia made after October 2022). Visitors with Famous Names may not be added to queues other than the Plaza. The controller of a Visitor with a Famous Name may change that Visitor’s Name to a non-Famous Name, at any time.

Visitor names seem split between famous names and original inventions, right now. Attempting to pick a direction.

imperial The names don’t bother me that much, so I’ll defer to our Proprietor if he feels strongly enough that the names need to be thematically consistent.

I do not think this accomplishes what it intends to. For example, “Grandpa Fuller” is an obvious meme name, but not Famous. On the other hand, “Tom Hand” is apparently not intended as a meme name, but the search finds the sentence “Tom hand carves a traditional dugout canoe” in addition to a long-retired football player.

Trying to make new names from scratch, the more common the forename and surname, the more likely they are to coincidentally appear in Wikipedia, so invented names that look like “Amelia Davies” that look plausible probably don’t work (and indeed this example does not) while weird and implausible names like “Rekage Greyjoth” are encouraged for safety.

against I don’t really see a solid reason to have this in the ruleset, if people want to have fun with their visitor names I don’t see the issue with it.

The intention was just that “the kind of two-word name you wouldn’t find on Wikipedia in any context” might be an interesting constraint, when finding a way to resolve the emergence of celebrity and invented camps. The flipside might be “must have a Wikipedia page”, but I think invented names are probably more interesting.

I’d be fine seeing Rekage Greyjoth queueing behind Grandpa Fuller, while Amelia Davies instead has to be named Angelica Davies to pass the filter.

I would not object on thematic grounds to putting some sort of leash on meme names, for example by requiring Group members to share a surname, but I’d rather have some meme names than only odd ones.

By locking most existing Visitors out of the game until they change to a compliant name, this proposal is also so highly disruptive even in the short window until it’d be amended. So against .

What do you mean when you say “meme name” here?

against Withdrawn to keep the queue moving, since proposals are timing out a lot.
