Proposal: Nudging the Wheel

Self Killed—Clucky

Adminned at 29 May 2020 00:52:55 UTC

Create a new dynastic rule, “Nudges”:

Each Amnesiac has a number of Nudges, a non-negative integer tracked on “[[The Wheel]]” wiki page. The starting value for new and unidling Amnesiacs is the most common Nudge count among all other Amnesiacs, or 1 if there is a tie for the most common such count.

As an Atomic Action, if there is no unresolved Nudge Post, an Amnesiac may spend 1 Nudge and make a Story Post with “Nudging” in its title, specifying a Segment; this is known as a Nudge Post. A Nudge Post is “unresolved” until (and during) the next time an Amnesiac Spins the Wheel, and “resolved” after that.

While there is an unresolved Nudge Post, Amnesiacs cannot change their Wager.

When an Amnesiac Spins the Wheel, if there is an unresolved Nudge Post, instead of rolling dice to select a Segment, the action is resolved as though the dice had rolled the number corresponding to the Segment specified in that Nudge Post.

Set each Amnesiac’s Nudges count to 1.

A fixed version of pokes’ proposal that gets rid of the time-travel aspects. Now you rig the wheel in advance, rather than retroactively. (This also locks down Wagers until the next spin, for obvious reasons.)

I’m currently envisaging Nudges as something that are very hard (perhaps impossible) to gain, but of course other people might have other views.

Looks interesting, but it’d be nice to have a system for multiple nudges too.

This makes a lot more sense, I’m self-killing the retroactive one in favor of this.

against “very hard (perhaps impossible) to gain” seems at odds with immediately giving one out to everyone.

@Kevan: if they were impossible to gain and you didn’t give one to everyone, there wouldn’t be any way to use them at all.

The idea is is more that it would in effect be a once-per-dynasty power move (or maybe a little more frequent than that, but not much more frequent). If you make nudging very frequent then random rolls won’t happen at all.

this can lock people out of playing the game. It also has similar timing problems with concerns you made on the original proposal—this will disproportionately effect people in certain time zones as the wheel will likely be spun earlier in the UTC day.

[ais523] Having 13 nudges in players’ pockets is likely to be enough to nudge half the spins of the dynasty, which feels too much.

Right. I guess it comes down to how often nudges are used; if you could indefinitely chain nudges it would be a problem because then people couldn’t play, if they’re rarely used it would be unlikely to be much of a problem though.

This does seem to encourage a scuffle at midnight to Spin the Wheel, optimise your Wager and then immediately lock things down with a Nudge, once there’s a victory condition to fight for.

Even a small group could do quite well out of it for a few days. A few days is a long time in BlogNomic, though.

against s/k; this is unlikely to pass and it’s best to keep the queue moving early in a dynasty.
