Proposal: Our Denizens

Move the subrule “Crypt Denizens” from being a subrule of “Vampire Lords” to instead being a subrule of “The Crypt of Dracula”.

In “Crypt Denizens”, change

The following Denizen Traits can be held by Crypt Denizens:

to

The following Denizen Traits can be held by Crypt Denizens (and are Selectable, with the Trait Cost specified in parentheses at the end of their descriptions, unless otherwise specified):

and in the list immediately after the sentence, append “(+1)” to the item “Evasive”, “(+2)” to the item “Mischievous”, “(-1)” to the item “Nutritious”, and “(not Selectable)” to the item “Quick”.

Then add a new item to that list:

Industrious: When the Crypt Settles, each Vampire Lord whose name is contained in this Denizen’s Sycophancy gains 1 Puissance. (+2)

Delete all the rule text from “Vampire Lords may summon Denizens to do their bidding” to “This effect may be stacked with the Glyph effect” inclusive from “The Crypt of Dracula”.

To the end of “Crypt Denizens”, add the following paragraph:

When a Denizen injures Richardo von Nestor, each Vampire Lord whose name is contained in its Sycophancy gains an amount of Influence equal to the amount of Energy Richardo von Nestor lost. This effect may be stacked with the Glyph effect.

Then add the following subrule to “Crypt Denizens”, with the title “Denizen Actions”:

Summon Denizen is a Power Action. To perform Summon Denizen, a Vampire Lord selects a Name for the Denizen (which cannot be nor contain “Dracula”), a string of flavour text; its Brutality and Cunning, each of which is a non-negative integer; zero or more Selectable Traits; and a Summoning Location, which must be a Lit Room that is neither the room located at E4 nor orthogonally adjacent to it.

The cost of this Power Action is equal to the chosen Brutality, plus the chosen Cunning, plus the total Trait Cost of the chosen traits (but is instead 2 if it would be less than 2). When this action is performed, a Denizen is created at the chosen Summoning Location, with the chosen Name, Brutality, Cunning, and Traits. Its initial Sycophancy contains only the Vampire Lord who performed the action.

Move Denizens is a Power Action and also a Daily Action, with a cost of 2. When performing it, a Vampire Lord chooses any number of Denizens whose Sycophancy contains the name of that Vampire Lord, and changes the locations of those Denizens, subject to the restrictions that each Denizen’s location after the change must be a Lit room orthogonally adjacent to (or the same as) its location before the change, and that no new location can be the room located at E4, nor a room orthogonally adjacent to it.

Puts all the Denizen rules into one place (they’re currently a bit spread out and hard to follow), removing duplication between them, and fixing some ambiguous language (also giving Move Denizens a cost because it doesn’t currently have one, and fixing two scams). Also adds a way for us to get Puissance from our Denizens (inspired by Josh’s “Hunter the Hungry” but much simpler).

I originally wrote out all the changes to “Denizen Actions” individually, but there are so many minor grammar changes that it made more sense to just specify the new text. Nothing’s actually being repealed here (unless i’ve made a mistake); all the content of the deleted block of text is being added back in to “Crypt Denizens” or “Denizen Actions” (often with fixes / clarity improvements).

This mess (at least a part) was my fault, so thank you for the cleanup.

for Although unless someone starts using Denizens I’m leaning towards repealing them altogether.

@Josh: Strategically, people should start using them once they have a stable Sepulchre (and with these changes, maybe even before). The problem is that with the cost to create one, nobody who’s created a Sepulchre has had enough time to regenerate enough Puissance to move onto Denizen creation.

So it isn’t surprising that they haven’t been used much yet. They’re likely to become more prominent over time, though.
