Can I fold a piece of paper in two, write ‘S&P 500’ on the cover in crayon, and open it up to reveal “The player called Josh has achieved Victory”?

It’s more to say that this is one place to look it up, but if someone were to MadisonSilver the URL, it doesn’t make it the actual opening. The actual opening values can be found in many places in a way that is very close to a worldwide consensus of one number that I hope can be referred to as “the opening”.

@Chiiika: because that website isn’t the S&P 500. We have to assume words mean things or the game won’t operate.

@Chiiika: I agree that words that are otherwise undefined in the Ruleset should default to their usual “real world” meaning, otherwise by the same argument we could say “well the word ‘altered’ in ‘The Ruleset and Gamestate can only be altered in manners specified by the Ruleset.’ isn’t specifically defined so I’ll interpret it as ‘turned into a suffusion of yellow’, and then I can change the Ruleset however I want since there’s nothing preventing me from doing so”.

Ambiguities can and will occur, of course, and we can resolve them via CFJ as they are brought up. I don’t really see a CFJ about either your example or mine being resolved in any other way than “it means what it usually means for most people, not what you’re suggesting here” - barring a vote brigade, of course. :P

having it not change each time its run seems possibly boring and maybe opens up room for abuse if we’re not careful with future rules.
