Proposal: Reapplied Science

Adminned at 01 Sep 2020 17:28:53 UTC

In the atomic action in the rule Application, between the points that start “Prepare a list” and “Randomly select”, add:

Optionally, spend 1 additional Stamina to Apply Selectively, changing each instance of the second most common Effect (selecting from the most common Effects if there is a tie in first place, or selecting from the eligible options if there is a tie in second place) in the prepared list of Likely Effects to “Restorative” or “Productive” as wished

In the same rule change ‘If the Equipment’s effect on that Discovery is not Unknown, skip the next four steps’ to ‘If the Equipment’s effect on that Discovery is not Unknown, skip the next five steps, and also the last step, of this Atomic Action’,

imperial Will defer to the majority over ease-of-production, although it does feel less logical for one person carefully spraying a Tremadon with a fire extinguisher to lock that in as the default outcome.

Specifically the Tremadon’s toenails. That’s the reactive part

That makes sense if the selected outcome is always preferable and nobody would ever want the “unselective” alternative. But it feels weird that if someone wants to make sure that a Sudorite Hazard can’t be Restored by a Gamma Pistol, they can Apply the gun Selectively and skew the universe towards gamma radiation being Productive on Sudorite rather than Restorative.

against I like the concept of skewing items in specific directions, but the implementation is really odd, especially eliminating possibilities that would otherwise be likely.

I would be delighted to hear alternatives. At the moment we have some very nice crafting rules which we can’t use because we have not a single productive tool/discovery combo.

Assigning certain items to be more destructive, restorative, or productive manually sounds good.

Hmm, maybe I was reading this as failed because I thought I’d voted against. I think this undermines the basic “we are trying out unknown chemical reactions” concept of the game too much.
