Proposal: Rules of Succession

Reached quorum 8 votes to 0. Enacted by Kevan.

Adminned at 28 Nov 2023 08:56:04 UTC

Replace all instances of “The Old King” with “Old King” in all sections of the Ruleset, including Core, Special Case and Appendix.

Create a new dynastic rule titled “Claims” with the following text:

A Claim is a subrule of this rule and has a nonnegative integer value for Strength and one or more Conditions to meet. An Heir who meets the conditions for a Claim is considered to have that claim.

Create a new rule titled “Transition of Power” with the following text:

When The Old King Perishes, the Heir whose single strongest Claim is stronger than all other Heirs’ strongest Claims achieves victory. If multiple Heirs are tied for strongest, their next-strongest Claims are successively compared.

Setting the core victory condition for the dynasty: whoever has the best claim to the throne when the king dies gets to be king. When will he die? Who knows…

“Replace all instances of “The Old King” with “Old King”” needs to explicitly say that it’s intending to amend Core, Special Case and Appendix - either in as many words, or with tags.

Otherwise the Tags rule will assume that you didn’t really mean it, and invalidate the first step of the proposal. (The Tags rule is there so that we can’t accidentally - or maliciously - wipe out something in core with a casual “change X to Y” enactment.)

Minor niggle in that this proposal abolished the The Old King fomulation and then immediately reinstates it in the second rule, but that’s more aesthetic than actual.

There’s a long-shot scam in here, as well, in that “to perish” has multiple meanings, including to lose its normal qualities, to rot, or to decay; should the Old King ever lose a capability or a tracked resource then an enterprising spirit (and remember that Brendan is always waiting in the wings) could argue that they have Perished, and I would personally feel compelled to vote for it.

imperial for now, would like to see Perish defined more rigourously quickly (even just amending it to “performs the Perish action”).

I unidle; quorum is unchanged.

I’d probably vote against that kind of argument, unless there was a very strong basis for it. It doesn’t seem like it’ll be an urgent issue in any case.

I feel like by that reasoning, effects like “when a player casts a vote on a proposal” would trigger every time the player votes on a ballot initiative in their local jurisdiction and “idle player” affects everyone who is currently unemployed.

@vovix Worse arguments have stood.

(please note that I am de facto voting for; I agree that it’s not an urgent consideration but it’s also a very minor fix.)

I suppose if I die in real life, it would be quite flavor-appropriate to end the dynasty accordingly.
