Proposal: Scaled Up Spinning

Timed Out. Fails 1-5 with 1 unresolved DEF—Clucky

Adminned at 18 Aug 2021 02:09:38 UTC

In the list of available types of Machine in Rule 2.2, perform the following changes:

Change the Cost of both Spin and Press machines to “one to four Energy”.
Change Effect of a Spin machine to “for each Energy spent to pay the cost for this Activation, roll DICE10 and gain a Box containing the result of that roll.”
Change Effect of a Press machine to “Choose a number from 1 to 5. Gain one box containing the chosen number for each Energy spent to pay the cost for this Activation.”

Probably a good improvement, but I don’t like this coming right after I splurged on a Cooling Widget for my Spin to get this exact effect. Can we work in some kind of compensation for the people who already spent resources on setting up larger-scale boxmaking infrastructure?

What sort of compensation would be fair?

Probably the best compensation is to, for anyone who has a Cooling Widget on a Spin or Press, remove it and give them 10 Cogs (the cost of buying a Cooling Widget) in its place as part of this proposal. (If they still want the Cooling Widget they can just buy it again.)

On a side note, this breaks Cogbot, in that it now has a choice in how to take its action but nothing specifies how it takes the choice. (I don’t consider this a reason to vote down the proposal, though.)

I don’t think any compensation is feasible. Most of the extra investment in cube-generation is in the form of players with both a spin and a press machine, and there’s no clean way to compensate those players.

why? you’re almost never going to have more than two energy. and if you wanna spin twice, just buy a cooling widget for your spin.

Could refund the cost of those as well, I suppose. A player who wants to keep them can re-buy them, but that gives them the option to reorganize their economy.

Refunding Boxes applies the refund unfairly, because the proposal would pass at an unknown time in the middle of a Cycle.
