Proposal: Something to do

Add a new Dynastic rule named “The Safe” as follows:

The Attic contains a hidden Safe. The Safe can be Open or Closed. It initially starts as Closed. The Safe contains a paper which has the name of the Guest who has the lowest degree of relation to Lord Cartlesham. The Safe has a Combination lock with 3 numbers between 1 and 1000 known only to the Executor. Any Guest present in the Attic who believes that they know the combination may privately inform the Executor that they wish to Open the Safe and provide the Combination in the right order. This action cannot be performed more than once daily. Executor shall provide the first Guest wishing to open the Safe with the correct Combination the information contained in the Safe and change the state of the Safe to Open.

Add a sub-rule named “Combination Lock” to the rule “Safe” as follows:

The numbers for the Combination to the Safe are hidden somewhere in the Lounge. If the state of the Safe is Closed, as a weekly action, a Guest in the Lounge may inform the Executor that they wish to search the Lounge for clues for the Combination. The Executor shall then inform all Guests in the Lounge either a hint for any of the numbers in the Combination or a hint for the order of the Combination.

Add a sub-rule named “Closing the Safe” to the rule “Safe” as follows:

If the state of the Safe is Open, then the Executor may change the state of the Safe to Closed by choosing a new Combination and making a blogpost to that effect. The Safe shall contain the name of the Guest who has the lowest degree of relation to Lord Cartlesham amongst all the Guests who are not Arrested or Dead at the time when the Safe was Closed.

Upon enactment of this Proposal, the Executor shall choose a Combination for the Safe and store the name of the Guest, who has the lowest degree of relation to Lord Cartlesham amongst all the Guests who are not Arrested or Dead at the time of enactment, in the Safe.

Add something to do for guests who are not murders or detectives. The intention is that the name of the Guest who will be the Heir per Rule 2.11 is stored in the Safe and when the Safe is opened this information may become public (if the Guest who opened the Safe wants it to) and then the rest of the Guests can take some action on that information.

Plus this could provide a good ability for me, like not needing the correct order for the safe or something.

I think that only the Murderers are interested in knowing who the Heir was, since they are the only ones that can use an Action against another Guest. Oh, and Evil Detectives too (since they can Arrest the Heir with false evidence).
Plus, we need to modify Rule 2.5 Bloodline: since the degree of relationship is determined randomly, this number is LESS random (because the lowest one is fixed y the name in the safe) for a Guest arriving AFTER the safe is opened the first time.
Or worse, the name in it changing at every Guest arrival?
For now,  against

for Although I don’t really like the vagueness of “a hint”; players should have a clear idea what to expect when deciding whether to invest some effort into performing an action.

Just occurred to me that commons can try to use this to sic Murderers on those ahead of them in line and that whoever the next of kin is has vested interest in always being the one to open the safe in order to scramble the combination.

As for Naz’s second point, yeah, it makes no sense that the name in the safe changes in real-time as new Guests arrive and old ones get killed, but realism has to be sacrificed for gameplay. I can only go up or down one flight of stairs a week if the lights are on, but I can go from the attic to the basement and back up to the second floor in a single blackout.

Good point, Orni.
I think that you focus on a problem: normal Guest can’t take any action against another Guest, unless they reveal the Bloodline number in Bloodline Board, hoping some black sheep will do the wet work (or, if you are less bloody, denounce them as Murderer hoping some Detective will do his duty).
I think this is a problem (depending on another special ability).
In Mafia (or Werewolf, or Lupus in Tabula…) normals have a power: lynch someone. Here, the only way of doing it is a Crisis.
Regarding the name in the Safe, changing it at every Guest arrival is not only a problem of realism, but also a problem of information management: if I know that every arrival will change the name of the Heir, why should I open the Safe? The information in it is unreliable - I don’t know the Heir, I know only the Heir in the particular moment I open the Safe (ie I know the Guest with the lowest number in that moment).
Is this information useful as having the name of the real Heir?
