Proposal: Sparks of Hope

Timed out, 5-0. Enacted by JonathanDark.

Adminned at 27 May 2024 19:23:30 UTC

Add a subrule to The Story called “Common Words” with the following text

A Common Word is a word found on https://wiki.blognomic.com/index.php?title=Oxford_3000

Add a rule called “Sparks” with the following

Each Storyteller may have a Spark which is a Common Word, or may have no spark and by default has no Spark. A Storyteller’s Spark is publicly tracked. A storyteller may change their Spark as a daily aciton

Add the following steps to the start of the Drawing atomic action

* If at least one Storyteller has a Spark, randomly select a Storyteller who has a Spark. Choose that Spark as a Word Element, then set that Storyteller’s spark to be no spark
* Randomly select a Common Word to be a Word Element
* If at least one Category is not empty, randomly select a Category that is not empty as a Category Element

Two things:

1) Are you purposely not adding a way to put entries in a Category? That’s fine, just asking if it’s something we need to do soon, since the first Drawing may not have any to pick from.

2) It’s probably unlikely, but what if there are no Storytellers with a Spark and all Categories are empty? There’s a few ways to address this: add a step that if no Elements were selected in the prior steps chose a random Word from the Oxford 3000, or add text to the rule that says the Publisher shouldn’t perform a Drawing until there is at least one Storyteller with a Spark.

Actually I just realized that issue 2 is very likely on the first Drawing. The rules currently say “If there is more than one step in the Drawing atomic action, the Publisher should perform the first instance of Drawing at their earliest convenience”, so as soon as this Proposal is enacted, I would need to perform the first Drawing, which wouldn’t give the Storytellers any time to set their Spark.

That would making the first Drawing and Judging very awkward, possibly stuck until a CfJ or rule change. If you can address this state in your Proposal now, that would be a lot more convenient.

Although I suppose if there are no Elements, then the first Creative Writings are essentially free-form, so I guess it wouldn’t be stuck after all. Still, it’s worth considering if this is the desired outcome.

Mario + Rabbids???

However, I’ll imperial because this seems a little too complicated.

The “Randomly select a Common Word to be a Word Element” step will always be there, even if we don’t get a random category or any sparks.

I totally missed that step somehow. Sorry about that.

@Juniper the good news is that I as the Publisher will handle all of the complicated stuff. All you have to do as a Storyteller is choose a single word from the wiki page mentioned.

and you don’t even *have* to do that. It just gives you a way to slightly influence what will go into the story, if you get chosen

Thanks for clarifying, I thought it was a little complicated but also that storytellers weren’t involved too much.
