Proposal: Stairs go both ways

times out at 3-5 and Fails. - lilomar

Add a new subrule to rule 2.6 “Dungeon”, “Retreating”:

As a daily action, an @ whose Dungeon Level is at least 2 may Retreat. This causes their Dungeon Level to reduce by 1 if their Dungeon Level is less than that of the Amulet of Yendor, or increase by 1 if their Dungeon Level is the same as or greater than that of the Amulet of Yendor.

You have to Find the Stairs to go in the direction you “want” to go in, plotwise. It would add interesting tactics, though, as well as speeding up the game, if you could go in the “other” direction more or less for free; for instance, being currently on dungeon level 2, I can’t now move back to dungeon level 1 via any game mechanic other than grabbing the Amulet or waiting for it to turn up. The action’s disallowed on dlvl 1 because we already have a rule about Escaping.

imperial It should probably reset kills when you do this.

Hmm… it’s not as if not resetting kills is exploitable, because you could only use it to go back to the level you just came from.

Thus the DEF rather than the AGAINST.

against  due to retreating downwards being exploitable.

for How is retreating downwards exploitable? You can only go down if the amulet is above you, so what purpose could it possibly serve?

@Bucky: Numbers are more likely to do damage than individual stats. Dlvl 1 is a much more dangerous place to be than Dlvl 2!

@ais523: And someone on dungeon level 6 and heading down at a rate of one level per day is effectively immortal.

Perhaps we should implement the Medusa level; go beyond dlvl 10 and you turn to stone.

That said, someone running away beyond reach rather than trying to win would probably be killed anyway.
