State of the game

Hey, guys. To those who don’t know me, I’m the guy whose webspace Blognomic is on (NOT its creator; that’s Kevan). I used to play, and hope to again one day soon.

I just wanted to take a quick poll of everyone and see how happy/unhappy you guys are with the technical side of things here. I know Dreamhost is kinda notorious for downtime lately, although it’s distributed among their scrillions of servers. Has there been excessive or particularly inconvenient downtime on Blognomic?

Also, I intend to devote some time to general upkeep around here, to do some things I always wanted to do but was too ADD for. I’ve started a list of possible-things-to-do on the wiki, so if anyone has any pet peeves or big ideas, type away. :)

Thanks, y’all.

I dunno about the rest, but I’ve noticed little, if any, downtime here on the site.

And you rejoining us would be awesome 75 :P

Site has been going good. EE has been working flawlessly. Wiki had problems with spam - but we fixed that somehow. =)

Just made this sticky. Will leave it for a day or two if that’s okay with everyone. Anyone can unstick it if it’s a problem.

We fixed the wiki spam by locking it against new signups, requiring new players to ask an admin to get an account, which isn’t ideal. We could have used ReCaptcha, but I think we’re using too old a version of MediaWiki.

There’s still a terrifying amount of spam in the wiki (over three thousand articles) - it might be easiest just to install a fresh instance of MediaWiki and transfer the pages over by hand. I think MediaWiki’s pretty happy about being moved around between directories, so you could just rename the current one to “/oldwiki/” and keep it around until we’ve finished transferring things.

Everything else on the server has seemed okay from here. Thanks for continuing to provide some space for BlogNomic to live.

I set it to tell me when a new Dynasty begins. I check back and it has and I wasn’t notified.

Ahaha, you discovered my dirty little secret.

Yes, that profile field was added when I was still making assumptions about EE features. Is has, in fact, never worked, except to deceive people about their receiving notifications.

What I intended was that the “Communicate” tab of the admin page would offer an easy way to send an e-mail to all members with a certain profile field set a certain way. That seems to still not be the case.

However, there may be an EE extension that offers this now; I’ll check on that in the near future and try to add it to our EE install.
