Proposal: Stinking Badges

Self-killed. Failed by Kevan.

Adminned at 23 May 2020 11:34:21 UTC

Add a subrule to “Role Actions” called “Tool Actions”:-

The following Tool Actions are types of Role Action.

* Using a Badge, set any number of Sheriff and Deputy Postures to blank, where the Amnesiac holding each such Posture is not openly carrying a Badge.

After “An Amnesiac may change their own Posture at any time.”, add:-

If an Amnesiac is openly carrying a Badge, an Amnesiac may not set their Posture to Sheriff or Deputy unless they themselves are openly carrying a Badge.

There are a lot of Sheriffs in town right now.

against Seems a bit weird that an Amnesiac can have remembered their role as a Sheriff or Deputy but still be denied access to it because they don’t want to donate public information through the Searching Pockets mechanic.

That sounds natural enough to me: in the eyes of the town, if two people are both claiming to be plainclothes police officers, the one who produces a badge can pull rank over the one who refuses to.

against This doesn’t give a mechanism to unset other players’ postures if you have a badge and they don’t. So the likely gameplay effect is that players will choose to posture as a Sheriff and never change it, which I suspect will lead to unfun gameplay.

I will happily support the law.

[ais523] “Using a Badge, set any number of Sheriff and Deputy Postures to blank, where the Amnesiac holding each such Posture is not openly carrying a Badge.” does this, or is intended to.

Wouldn’t this mean that we couldn’t give Sheriffs or Deputies “using a pistol” actions (unless we find some way of letting people hold multiple items)?

Maybe we need some kind of “Challenge another person’s posture” rule

@Clucky: We badly need a way to increase the supply of Mementoes as it is (especially out-of-Role mementoes), so I don’t think that’s a reason to vote against this proposal; once an additional-Memento-supply proposal has passed, that’ll solve your problem at the same time.

If you don’t like my suggestion, feel free to propose your own alternative way of doing that. (I don’t think letting players with Remembered roles grab multiple Mementoes is the correct way to do it, though.)

None of the Sheriffs have badges right now, and there’s no way for any of us to get them? What does this Proposal achieve?

for I guess ais’ Proposal gives us a way eventually at least

Oh well, the cop squad was fun while it lasted ;)

against Wait no this doesn’t get the right sheriff or sound fun

As far as I can tell, the only way the Sheriffs are going to get badges is by collecting evidence, which all of us can do even though we’re posers. Eventually, one of us is going to get to three evidence, and lock out the others based on zero legitimacy except for having timed the actions a little better.

That’s a good point about the gameplay implications.

against Self-kill on those grounds, given the increasing sense that Naught has left the game and the Pocket Search action is no longer available.
